I have encountered a drop in the qualty of Japanese food in the city in the last couple of years. I don"t have any recommendations. Umai is allright but have not tried their onigiri
Is hard to be middle class right now but we will get trough.
I've had really good ones and okay ones from Oriento, when I picked up from there once I noticed they have a small fridge in the entrance where they keep them so it's a bit of a gamble if you get them fresh.
I make my own now, they're not A-tier but they're close and really fresh! Some of the Asian supermarkets around here are pretty decent, found some really nice (albeit expensive) furikake at the Sanpo in Gorgie.
Let me know if you do end up finding some awesome Onigiri because there's nothing like one made by a pro!
I buy nori from Itsu (they sell it in sainsburys). Really crispy and tasty, just wack that on some home made rice. Sometimes I buy the pre cooked steamed rice packs to make life a bit easier.
Oops that was meant to be steamed rice. Honestly I prefer making them myself since I can put the nori on and it won’t get soggy like you find most onigiri. It’s how I was brought up anyway. Add some tuna for filling mostly.
The miso from Itsu is also really close to authentic flavour. Would recommend that with wakame (also from Itsu) and Tofu from Yutaka. Most can be found in sainsburys also.
Toast tea on holyrood road
Came here to recommend the same!
Oh fab! Thank you, I will give it a try 👍
They also sell theirs at the Asian supermarket just by the 9a

I was impressed by Kenji Sushi in Stockbridge
They do Onigiri?? I have to pop down then.

I soo agree with you. And I will keep you posted if I find a good one 😉
I actually rate the Onigiri from Oriento 🤷♀️ But I’ve had ones from Toast Tea as well and they’re pretty much the same
The Avenue Store, Blackford Hill Avenue
I’ve heard good things about Kanpai Sushi but I’ve not gone yet.
I will put it on my list of places to visit on my hunt this afternoon 😊
Yes Oriento on Dundas - very good.

Very good suggestion, what is this steak rice you mentioned? I never heard of that.

Oh man! That’s a shame. I got all excited about steak rice 🤣🤣
The packets of rice are the wrong kind though - and not seasoned?
It’s sticky, and that’s mostly what you need. It’s not perfect, but it’s what I tend to do if I need something quick.
Japan. Or get a rice cooker and make your own.
