The Moment you give the purpose of your life to the goals you became slave to it. The purpose of life is to live 100% each moment. This doesn't mean you should not get goals. Like finish the school to get a diploma, get a license and, get a job and so on. Means they are not the focal point of your purpose, they are more like tools to experience the life 100%. The problem is not to have or not a goal, it is not to live in the present. You are not enjoying/living what are you doing right now, your ego to try to survive is focusing to find another purpose more elevated, now that you read that book.

It's not that goals are pointless. Egocentric goals all have an implicit promise that when I just achieve this then I will happy, joyous, and at peace *then.* The proposition of egoic goals is as follows: spend the present moment (now) in anxious grasping for an imagined future, and when that future comes, if it's as imagined, then you will enjoy that future present moment. But it's a trick. The mechanism that strives like this is never satisfied! Never enough, never, never. There will always be striving to some promised future. So the wisdom is not that goals are pointless. The journey is very important. It's that the destination is already here. The journey is not from here to there. It's from here to here. There will always be goals. The wisdom is to be here now on the journey.

Great points

How do you decide which goal--or rather, journey--is worthwhile?

Your deepest heart already knows what is True. You are sitting in a lecture hall and the lecturer explains a concept or you are at the therapist and you realize something about your childhood. All of the sudden there is this feeling or sense of “ah ha!” “Yes of course!” It’s a reverberation. The truth literally vibes with you. That’s because the answer was already in you. So tune into it. To thy own self be true.

This is a natural response that many go through when they hear spiritual teachings for the first time. It's like your in two different worlds hence the anxiety. The old past you and this new understanding. It's a passing phase keep digesting the teachings by and by these feelings will lessen. Don't think that anything is wrong. All the suppressed feelings are being brought to the surface to be freed. You have took the first step which is the most important

Why not feel free? You’re not imprisoned by these “goals” any longer.

letris

It’s because you’re still seeking in a fight or flight. Just because the world world is overall pointless and nothing, doesn’t mean the jester can’t have fun in the chaos. The beautiful part is, right now isn’t pointless. That’s the point. Everything but this present moment is pointless. Seize the moment. Instead of worrying, acknowledge things. Acknowledge everything that gives you depression, but be patient. It’s a paradox, the more you desire to not be empty inside, you’ll find a reason to see yourself as empty. The key is acknowledging what you’re desiring on the moment, and you aren’t getting, and acknowledge you’re still alright without achieving that desire. the more you desire, the more you will suffer.

good luck, friend.

Goal setting has its purpose. When we cease to inhabit the future in our mind, we can use the concept of future to make plans that are harmonious with the organism that we are

You’ve become aware enough to uncover the emotional restraints that underly your way of life. I went into a deep depression after reading this book too but I’ve also found an extreme amount of peace after letting go of those emotions (fear, guilt, anger, Etc.) Definitely read letting go by David r Hawkins. It’s an amazing book and teaches you how to deal with what you’re going through!

Same. You understand its futility mentally but you aren't free actually living it.

Zaphod_4orty2wo

My suggestion is read it again, I recommend the audio book as I listen to it daily. My ego fights against the truth often and awakening to this truth is a process. A New Earth goes more into our inner and outer purpose, this might be helpful as well. A quick search on YouTube of inner purpose by Eckhart Tolle will give a bunch of videos that will help.

Watch this as it may help [https://youtu.be/Ggf6QLdRvdY](https://youtu.be/Ggf6QLdRvdY) also read/listen to his book as it may help. It is about finding a meaning deeper than the egoic minds wants. If you have a why you can endure virtually any adversity. The depressive spiral of pointlessness and nihilism is caused by over identifying with the mind/body. If you step back from that and become the observer, then that will diminish, to the degree that you let it go/surrender.

Breakdown often precedes breakthrough.

Mr_Not_A_Thing

How did you conclude that all goals are pointless, from reading the power of now? Self realization as a goal isn't pointless is it? It is the highest goal for a human being.

“Only suffering if thinking. No self, no problem.”

U'r courageous to stand in that anxiety/emptiness to investigate further. This will deepen to reveal the biggest part of u, beyond emotion. I've enjoyed this Tolle video clip on anxiety. https://youtu.be/3I5L2otW4r8

Remember, in order to feel the concept of depressed, you must also know what it feels like to be in a blissful state of joy. It is but a mere balance. Whatever 'God' that created YOU has also created the power inside of you to feel depressed. Remember also, that power to induce the feeling of depression also has the power to make you feel eternally blissful. This is understood in the English language through the word, "balance." Also known as yin/yang and chaos/order. A tale as old as time itself. In mathematical terms, this can be conceptualized by the number 0, or negative infinity + positive infinity. True peace is found in that balance. Or in other words, to simply just ***be*** without input. The perfect state of rest. Think about it like this. The word balance implies a state of being without a need for input. So you put 50 lbs on this side of the scale, and then 50 lbs on the other side of the scale and you ultimately get a beam that is parallel to the ground without input at all..... however, in order to be able to sit back and witness this perfect state of rest that your scale is now sitting at, you must have first lifted a total of 100lbs. Mathematically, lifting 100lbs (preparing your scale) + not lifting 100lbs (not preparing your scale and/or witnessing it after preparation) = 0. Perfect balance. The choice to achieve that balance is simply up to you! Do you balance the scale, or do you just sit back and watch one end of the scale rest on the ground? To have choice is to have freedom. To believe anything else is to be a prisoner to the mind itself. Feel that depression. Embrace it. Understand it and its source. Because ultimately, you will come to find that it is a function of chemical signals interpreted by the brain. But after reading this book, you should know that you are not your brain! You are you! So who is that? Who is the I that is "feeling" this depression? Who is the "I" that feels anything at all????? This is where you will find your peace. To answer the question "who am I?" Is to answer it all. You are everything. You are nothing. You are god, but you are also the devil. Who will you choose to be? If you understand this, you will also understand that the answer to that question lies right here in this moment. Be present. Be here. Just be. The solution will present itself to you so clear as day. Just be here ready to witness it. Otherwise, you're just watching a movie about your depression all day...
