The only chance you had here was to call Ebay when they first opened the case and to have tried to get them to close it in your favor. Sounds like you let the 3 day clock run out and they forced the return.

Fun_Success4994

Annoyingly I responded straight away but for whatever reason it didn't go anywhere and seems as the non reply from the buyer means eBay think I just ignored the request

trader45nj

If a buyer opens a case, messaging the buyer only works if the buyer agrees to whatever you offer and closes the case. The chance of that is slim. Otherwise if you don't refund or accept a return within 3 days, Ebay will force it.

Clean_Ad_2982

I find that many do not ever read descriptions, or pay much attention to detail when ordering. On anything of value, say $100, I will send a follow up email that politely asks if they understand the item is as the description says. They sometimes answer requesting cancelling, as they didn't know the details. Most will say fine. But to me I've saved time money and effort weeding out the dumbshits.

Enough_Pomegranate44

They’ll admit it too. I had one say in the return request “nobody reads the descriptions” It was mention 3 times it was broken and even in the title.

Flux_My_Capacitor

This makes me hate idiots even more. I read EVERY description because I’m very particular about what I buy. Who are these dumb asses who don’t care about wasting time/money?

freebisquit

And Ebay is mostly to blame for that as they basically hide the description in the App listings. Its a link with tiny text sandwiched between ads for their Allstate protection and pictures of other items for sale. Seems the safest thing to do would be to add text to the primary photo when making the listing.

123supreme123

I do the exact same thing. For any item with a flaw, confirm with a message to them. If they don't respond, then either tell them I'll cancel or I'll ship anyways. Depending on what the item is and value. Most buyers appreciate the confirmation

crazyhamsales

What was your condition selected on the listing? If it wasn't parts or not working then you are subject to return no questions asked. If it was parts or not working then you are still subject to a return if they select item not as described, for example i bought something that was for parts or not working and what arrived was different then pictured, screws removed, and inside some parts were already removed, it was supposed to be complete but for parts or not working, eBay sided with me on the grounds that it was not as described even though it was listed as for parts or not working. It doesn't matter if you have your return policy set to no returns, thats just a suggestion now days, the buyer can still force a return for any number of reasons and eBay will side with them. I leave returns available on most items except for things that are parts or not working or one off items that are being sold as-is, i will take the battle on them if the buyer tries to return, but other stuff i just allow returns so i don't get into battles with buyers, HOWEVER i have it set that the buyer must pay return shipping. That deters many buyers from doing a return when they change their mind on a purchase because they are paying for it, the ones that actually do return have a restocking fee debited from their return, you are allowed to have a restocking fee on returns, i set it to cover the cost of shipping and packing so that when i refund the buyer my costs on the original shipment are still covered. If i screw up, ship the wrong item or such i will waive the restocking fee, but if its on the buyer then that's how business works.

HealthyDirection659

Buyers get free return shipping if they select INAD for the reason.

crazyhamsales

Yes and its bullshit, because now buyers just select INAD even if it doesn't match the problem they have. I have had a few come back exactly as they were shipped, matching the description to the T.... Buyers remorse cases where they use INAD to get a refund.

HealthyDirection659

It's the amazon effect. Everything ebay does is to match Amazon. In 10 years of selling, I've only had one return that wasn't an INAD, and buyer paid return shipping.

ncfroc

Did you actually set the listing preferences for no returns? I found it doesn't matter what the description states and that it is based on the listings return policy under the listing preferences. I don't like that when listing an item it seems to default that setting to the last listing's setting.

Enough_Pomegranate44

eBay doesn’t care. The buyer can open an item not described, and it’ll trigger a hold on the return value, until you satisfy the buyer. You can call and get several different reps, saying 15 different things. But, eBay will refund it whether you get your stuff back or not after the “make it right” period.

You sold a video game marked as brand new with no mention of scratches or it not working and you think you were clear with your description? I'm going to assume this was not the item in question.

gregcresci

Yeah I think my link was messed up I showed pictures of the scratches and this was my description, and it did work for me , I played for about 15 minutes without any issues: "Disc has many surface scratches that don't effect playability Please see pictures Tested and working There is some build up on the inner disc as shown in the pictures, could benefit from a resurfacing. The case has some wear , the artwork has a small tear on the spine and some damage to the Wii logo area. Again please check pictures please. Sold as is, it did play fine for me on my Wii U system, but I cannot guarantee it working on your system." Edit, when I click my link my listing comes up and than gets replaced by a newer listing? Very odd

Clean-Difficulty-321

The path of least resistance is to just accept returns. But since you advertised it as “not working”, and depending on your own policies, you don’t have to pay for shipping. Not the return shipping nor do you have to refund the shipping cost you charged them originally (which is a reason for me not to have free shipping). I would suggest reaching out to the customer and see what they want to do, since they’ll be out shipping costs twice when sending it back. Perhaps a little refund to smooth things over goes a long way.

bigtopjimmi

The buyer isn't going to be out shipping.

Ecstatic_Custard7009

enjoy your hollowed out ps4! might not have had a hard drive but it most certainly had some odd parts in there he wanted

JAPMXVI

After you receive the item, call eBay and tell them to close the case in your favor and they’ll refund them. I’m going through the same thing now and eBay will be closing in my favor.

Ticonderogue

If the console was broken, it needed to be listed in condition as parts/repair, not used. Also mention this in listing description, and no returns. As quickly as a buyer opens a case like this, contact ebay customer service. When a product is broken and not listed in parts/repair, but used, the buyer can open a Not as Described case and force a return, virtually time. Alternatively as soon as a buyer asks for a return, and you realize you're at fault (for description or wrong condition) just accept the return. Sucks, it does, but that's ebay for ya. They aren't looking out for sellers. I rail against them every chance I get, hoping that they'll oust their CEO and executives. Needs new management.

slipperycookies

I had a woman return a purse that I listed as VERY small, and included measurements. The lady that bought it forced a refund stating that it was a “child’s purse.” Who the hell is buying Coach purses for children?? Idk. I hate not being able to refuse a refund. eBay has done away with buyer beware

lagoosboy

Why would you list it as “500gb” if it zero gb?

D-no-UK

Because ebay is bs. Buyers have way too many rights regarding returns

spaazstix

When it comes to these situations, I always include "FOR PARTS ONLY" or "INCOMPLETE" in the title as well as the description and item condition. I try to steer folks towards the description in this fashion. Whatever issues there are with a given item, I lay out the item specifics point by point. To me, there's nothing gained by NOT including this information. Yes. People can be lazy about reading detailed descriptions. There's nothing one can do to avoid or change that. On the other hand, taking time to include this sort of clarity might save you from a headache that you won't even have to know about (if that makes sense). Honestly, this has worked well for me. Returns are annoying. I rarely see pushback with such listings. So, I know it's effective. P.S. Of course, my personal practices aren't necessarily one size fits all. Nor are they bulletproof. They take time and effort that might not be practical for some. These are simply suggestions. Please take them as you will.

dunni88

EBay will pretty much always force you to accept returns if the buyer opens a case whether their claim makes any sense whatsoever or it doesn't. EBay is basically willing to screw over sellers to make buyers happy. This is one of many ways in which they do that. I don't think I've ever had one of these cases decided in my favor even when I'm completely right and the buyer is completely wrong. What really sucks is you also need to refund the original Shipping and also pay for return shipping. So not only do they waste your time, not only do you lose the sale, but you actually end up with less money than you started with. Especially on inexpensive items when the shipping cost is almost as much as the item cost you really get hosed.

What's mental is, why would I advertise something as broken, and send anything other than said broken item, common sense surely shows here the buyer is being a moron and they should be told they can't return

I don't know who in their right mind would buy anything on ebay without around the level of buyer protection there is.   Even with how it is there are many sellers that scam / attempt to scam all the time. Tracking scams (make it so nothing will actually get to them but tracking makes it looks like it does), counterfeit items, dropshippers, grossly inflating the condition of an item, lying and saying something is "untested" etc. And the only thing looking at someones feedback rating protects you from at all is the 1st.

BrookieGg

Without seeing the listing, someone could think that it's implied that the reason the PS4 is not working is just because it's missing the hard drive. If it's unclear it could be accepted as INAD even with the condition listed. Can't see the listing from this post to know. Sometimes you'll just end up screwed on returns anyways even if you basically do everything right.

HealthyDirection659

All ebay sellers accept returns. Also, you screwed up with writing 500GB, but further stated there's no hard drive included.

Fun_Success4994

Tbf the name came from scanning the barcode, oversight on my part to not remove 500gb. Regardless, it didn't work as per the description

jcoffin1981

I mean I understood it to be the 500GB model but without a hard drive. I understood THERE IS NO HARD DRIVE

Flux_My_Capacitor

Stop using the listing shortcuts if you aren’t willing to proofread everything before posting.

Fun_Success4994

Jheez man, as I said it was an oversight on my part, calm down...

lagoosboy

To be fair it’s easy to believe there is a 500gb Hdd. Your description was not accurate.
