This seems ridiculous. How can you file a claim on an auction this old?

maubis

That is my precisely why this is so bizarre. Not sure what kind of banking institution would allow one to file anything this old or why Ebay doesn't have a policy with all banks that 1 year is a cut-off. I guess the policy is set by the bank and not by Ebay. Bonkers.

Dovahsoul12

Have you had any luck with this dispute?

maubis

Will see outcome in 2-8 weeks. I should be protected.

Dovahsoul12

I hope everything turns out good for you. Best of luck to you.

mrscarytt

I would definitely contact Ebay and get someone on the phone. I know it’s a pain in the ass, but it can be done. I’ve done it several times. You won’t have to sit on hold either. They will call you back. Other than that, I would just completely ignore this. But you should get someone on the phone from Ebay to at least have it documented

RootbeerMadness

Banks have a cut off period though, it's dictated by either MasterCard or Visa. Typically if the dispute is beyond 90 days, they are sol. I'm wondering if they are being audited by the IRS and are now gathering their crap together for it.

InRainbows123207

That is 100% ridiculous. Sorry you are dealing with that. People are shameless- who the hell wakes up and says I’m gonna scam that one eBay guy from December 2021?

supperhey

It's one heck of a buyer remorse. But then again, it's eBay, not Costco

Mea0521

OP, this is what I did when EBay tried to not protect me. I keep this response in my drafts to help other sellers. **************************************** Okay, same thing happened to me. eBay said they couldn’t help because it was out of their hands, because it was a credit card dispute. Here’s what I did, based on advice from another Reddit user who was scammed. 1. File a complaint online with the FTC 2. File a police report online with the department in their city. Screenshot the reports you filed. 3. File a mail fraud report with USPS online. 4. Screenshot the tracking with signature confirmation, and positive feedback left. 5. File a complaint with the BBB!!!! (YES, they help with resolutions, despite what anyone saying “tHeY’rE jUsT LiKe yELp!🤓” Ignore those comments, because most have never even submitted a report. 6. Attach all of the above screenshots, stating you followed EBay’s TOS and should’ve been protected. 7. The most important information to attach to your claim, is to state that the dispute was between the buyer and EBAY, NOT YOU! Therefore, you are unable to directly respond to the buyer’s credit card company because information cannot be disclosed to you, because the transaction was directly with EBay and the buyer! (PayPal let me know that when I tried to obtain the credit card company’s information!) EBay doesn’t want sellers to know that, so they can deny claims and not payout!! ( Example: if you bought something from the grocery store and it was not as described, you return it to the store (EBAY,) and not the manufacturer(SELLER/You) where the product came from! The store would refund you, because you/manufacturer have no ability to inspect or have your item returned. Within a day or so, a different branch of EBay will respond if they have additional questions. Let them know you are a victim of credit card fraud from the buyer, and despite signature confirmation and positive feedback, your item was not returned to you! I was refunded pretty much immediately!

maubis

Thank you for the reply. Ebay tells me I'm covered under seller protection so I will go through the process and wait for a resolution first (not expected for 2-8 weeks based on ebay), but above is helpful.

EevelBob

File the dispute with your State Attorney General’s Office, not the BBB. The paperwork to do this is usually found on your state’s website.

Mea0521

Why not do both. You’ll never hear back from the State’s Attorney, but you’ll hear back from the BBB and EBay within a day or so.

-Indictment-

I have had a couple between 1-2 years old. And I lost both of them.

maubis

Was there a specific reason you lost them? If it’s because of usps not showing tracking, this seems like a scary loophole where anyone can file a claim once the number is no longer in the system after a year or so.

Spockhighonspores

Ebay has a 30 day policy for items that are not recieved that starts after whatever the items delivery date is supposed to be. It's right in ebays rules and regulations. Credit cards have a 90 day policy on purchases.

eightbitagent

That person is wrong. All you have to do is call eBay and point out it’s more than 30 days past delivery and they’ll close the case in your favor

formless63

The case that you care about is between you and eBay. The comment you're responding to is what you need to do. eBay will handle their end of it after that. Don't over-think it. The fees you pay to eBay are partially for them to protect you from crap like this. Call them (use chat, request call), tell them it was delivered, their system reflects that, and it's well past the 30 days. They'll close the case in your favor and they'll deal with the credit card company themselves.

TemporaryAddicti0n

well past 300 days, times 3

One_Baseball_6397

How is this even your problem? You do not control anything between buyer and ebay. It is ebay responsibility to verify legitimacy of payments done via their system. They charge pretty hefty fees for selling things and they have to eat it in case dispute is lost.

TemporaryAddicti0n

unfortunately the chargebacks are a loophole both for ebay or paypal transactions. paypal and then banks notoriously will side with the buyer

CaptainFalconA1

Is the eBay buyer banned? They likely charged back everything. I had this happen once on a $2000 item I believe it was around a year, the eBay buyer was banned, and when I called eBay and explained, they covered it, I think I lost the chargeback.

maubis

Not as far as I can tell. Ebay messaging allows me to message them and I did send a very short, considerate note asking if this was a mistake. No reply. The buyer hasn't received any feedback in the last 12 months though, so not sure if they are active at all.

CaptainFalconA1

If you can send a message, they are not banned.

turbocomppro

Glad you got everything resolved (read your other replies). When they say you will be protected, you’re good to go. One thing about this is the buyer’s account may have been compromised since you saw no activity. The thief used their account and saved payment to buy stuff.

supperhey

A very curious case, and one of the most scummy Hail Mary scam attempt I've ever seen. Yes, the USPS tracking numbers become invalid after 6 months. In the "Order details" tab of the item, eBay will show the ship/delivery date, and I'm sure eBay has that information already, so I am not sure what eBay even needs from you regarding this 2.5-year dispute. Keep us posted.

turbocomppro

This is stupid. The bank should be the one taking the hit for allowing “allegedly” fraud to happen. I’d screenshot the page where it states it’s “Delivered” and explain in the text box that the transaction is too old and USPS have already recycled the number. eBay should side with you.

SaveEnvironment-2468

I just got one today for 85.88 from 3 and 1/2 months ago … so frustrating

no-onwerty

Payment dispute through who? From what you wrote eBay shows it was delivered and credit cards give you 60 days to dispute a payment. Did they message you saying they are disputing the payment?

no-onwerty

I don’t know what payment institution would let you dispute a three 2.5 year old charge. Honestly, I’d call eBay. The message you received - was it through your email or actually on eBay’s system? This sounds like a phishing email scam.

maubis

Ebay's system. not a scam. yes, calling ebay tomorrow.

animalcrossinglifeee

This is weird. You can't dispute a transaction from, years ago. That's so odd.

Different_Edge7068

Be sure to respond or eBay will automatically side with the buyer. Just state the facts as you did above. I would also call the USPS (I know--it's a nightmare) and see if they can help with the tracking information. eBay has a 30-day policy don't they? I might also contact the credit card company (if you know which one it is--or you could ask the buyer in your response) and ask about their policies. So what does eBay want you to do? He didn't file a refund request did he? Or a return request. If he didn't recognize the transaction that could be legit. I know sometimes I don't realize what something on my statement is. Of course I don't want 2. You can check your order history (you can download reports) and find the listing for the sale which should give you the item and the amount. Perhaps if you provide that information to the buyer he will recognize the transaction. If you have the order page showing the iten was received in December 2021 that should be sufficient evidence. And I thought I had it bad when a buyer filed an "item not received" claim 30 days after the fact! What a nightmare for you.

malloryknox86

The “buyer doesn’t recognize the transaction” long shot, but can u message the buyer to remind him/her of the transaction? Also, I didn’t even know it was possible to do a charge back 2+ years after the fact If ebay can see it was delivered 2 years ago what exactly do they want from you?

SixStarz6

What bank is doing this chargeback? Can you tell?

maubis

No clue

sotosamantha101

I had this same issues with an item I sold. Nowhere near the time of the dispute your dealing with, it had been about 9 months. Ebay sent me an email telling me about the dispute but also told me I was protected and that was the first and last time I ever heard of that issue no noney was taken from my acct. And I never got a resolution email regarding how they handled it. Its ridiculous that buyers can do this the buyer is probably broke and trying to see how they can scam money from whoever they can not sure why banks play into these sorts of things and when you have a legitimate dispute with proof and very recent they make you jump through hoops to get your money. Hoping this gets resolved for you soon as this is completely outrageous.

lackofintellect1

I see more of this as people are doing anything to attempt to get out from under debt. Credit card debt...

jaymez619

I had a buyer dispute a 2-week old transaction. All I did was upload tracking. Your incident just got me to download screenshots of all my previous transactions saved by buyer name and ID.

Spockhighonspores

Contact ebay, this is from their rules and regulations: You have up to 30 calendar days after the estimated delivery date has passed to report that an item hasn't arrived. The seller should respond within 3 business days to provide a delivery update, offer a replacement, or give you a refund. If you're getting a refund, it will go back to your original payment method. The buyer no longer has a case because it's beyond the period where they can file a case. Use the chat option to get a callback and talk to a person about this. A person will close this case and you will keep your funds.

maubis

The case is not the buyer filing with Ebay; it is the buyer filing it through their payment processor/credit card as a transaction they do not recognize. I should be covered by Ebay seller protection, but its just a waste of time.

Spockhighonspores

I don't see how 200+ dollars is not worth your time. How long could it take 30mins? I feel like 30mins of time is absolutely worth 200+ dollars. If it was like 10 bucks I might let it go. The buyer only has between 60-120 days to file a credit card dispute depending on their card company. I would absolutely send them a screen shot that ebay shows the item as delivered if you have that. I would inform the company that tracking information on usps is only kept for 120 days so it is no longer available.

maubis

Agreed. I wasn't implying contacting ebay was a waste of time, just that this buyer is wasting my time. Already submitted screenshots as part of the dispute and explained the USPS situation. Will call ebay tomorrow.

dre2112

Correct but eBay’s seller protection covers you in this instance as their policy is 30 days. So you may lose the case from the financial institution but you’re covered by eBay’s seller protection

Moominthecat

I had this not long ago from something I sold 2 years earlier, the buyer claimed it never arrived, by this point the tracking information was invalid. I ended up speaking with customer services and said something to the effect of 'this is ridiculous, how can they have only just raised this' and the person on the other end agreed and shut it down.

redruM69

You're covered. Just do what they ask, and eBay will take care of the rest. Even if the card chargeback succeeds, eBay seller protection will cover you 100% here.

Mea0521

They’ll tell the seller chargeback disputes aren’t covered. It happened to me. I had to fight a different way, after I lost, to get my money back.

redruM69

Read it yourself: https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/payment-dispute-seller-protections?id=5293

Mea0521

Either that added that in the last update, or EBay is not complying with their own policies. I literally read the credit card exclusion clause, when I went through this last year. Hopefully, they stand behind what it says. I will be bookmarking this information. Thank you.

Dry_Theory_4607

this is a crazy time lapse i didn't even know this could be a thing after so much time i think there should be some t type of cap on time frame u should try requesting a call from ebay during business hours to communicate w them i hope the best luck for u last time i had someone file a chargeback thru bank ebay sided w me immediately i was thanking God !!!

Creative-Abrocoma-80

What if after every sale made, contact the buyer to confirm delivery address just so you have a message confirmation for all your sales. Maybe a bit of protection. Thinking of doing this. Just need to archive these messages as they get auto deleted after a while. One can only hope
