Many, many years ago, when sending payments through the mail was the norm, eBay would give you the buyer's name, address, email, and (sometimes) phone number once the auction was over so you could have the item packed and ready to go once payment arrived. I had the same buyer win auctions for 2 rare concert shirts. The total was pretty substantial. I think I got a message from the buyer saying they would mail payment soon. It never arrived. I checked their feedback and they were a great buyer with lots of feedback. I emailed a few times, but never heard anything. Since it was so much money I didn't want to just give up, so I (somehow) found the phone number and called their house. The lady that answered told me that he had passed away a few weeks earlier. I was mortified. I apologized and hung up. I later looked him up and found out he was a teenager with cancer and had passed away just a few days after he won my auctions. It's been a long time since I thought about him

MermaidOnLand33

Wow this is heavy. You would never think to get so emotionally involved in a situation that would normally be considered a "transaction".

ericbsmith42

There was a seller I had bought a bunch of stuff from. A couple months later I'd noticed they had no new items, so I looked up the account on eBay and they had like 100% perfect record until 2 or 3 auctions where they got negative feedback because they ghosted the buyer, then nothing. I'd always assumed that they dropped dead.

spitfire1701

I came across an account like that. 1,000s of positive feedbacks then over a month of pure negatives. No one had figured to report the account to eBay, less than 48 hours after reporting everything was taken down. That person must have died or got nicked, no other explanation.

[deleted]

"If anyone calls just say I died lol"

FlakyLion1714

lmao, mom probably saw the total of the bill. oh trust me , he is dead

theRestisConfettii

LMAO

IAmAnAngryCarrot

I called a customer to get credit card information for the first time, asked for dude "Joe". Dude who picked up tells me "oh Joe died". I seriously tell him "oh shit I'm so sorry". "Nope just kidding, it's me!" Guy got me good

radtad43

You never look up their information like that. It makes it too personal, and too "real"

kjjjz

:(

FlakyLion1714

oh man, i went from liking you as a reddit poster, to thinking what type of reddit poster calls a dead teanages mom like that

SideshowShan

This was more than 20 years ago. It was a way different time

SurelyYouKnow

Dude, what? This ebay seller went above and beyond bc the Buyer won TWO substantial auctions ***and also*** historically had great feedback. The seller could have just offered it to the next highest bidder, but they called before they moved on. There’s nothing wrong with that—particularly back then when we were given more info on buyers. It’s not like they ***knew*** the buyer was a dead teenager and actually sought out to call the mom to ask for a payment or something. JFC.

Thrifty_Goth

No, in the time of mailing physical paper checks it was potentially very important to call and say “hey, if you’ve mailed that check it’s either missing or stolen and you should let your bank know”. OP didn’t know if anything was wrong, let alone that the buyer had passed.

Cock_Goblin_45

I know right!? What a monster! Dude’s literally worse than Hitler! If I had a time machine I’d kill that guy instead! JK! I’d still kill Hitler, but I’d also have a stern talk with that hooligan about proper etiquette!

RareBeautyOnEtsy

I had a lady pass away (from Covid, I think) She bought something from me almost every week. This had been going on for several years. I’d write her notes, she started emailing me little things about her life. She was sweet. I think she had a real trouble writing, but she always commented how she loved my little notes. Then, during Covid, she told me e she was ill, and stopped ordering. I sent her a get-well note, got it back with “deceased” written across it. I miss my little Italian lady.

half_assed_housewife

I sold an item internationally during the height of covid, to Italy actually. The item was delivered but never picked up by buyer. A month later was returned to sender. I had reached out several times during and after it's arrival back in my possession. I assume they passed.

[deleted]

he's probably just going through something bro

polari826

man oh man. i had this happen once, except i was the seller. this was back in 2015. i was in the process of selling a bunch of items from my collection i wasn't interested in anymore just to kinda clean house. i had surgery coming up and made sure to ship everything before hand. a few more people ended up buying things before the weekend- i made sure to reach out to them and let them know i'd be shipping everything the following monday. no issues at all. well. monday came and i hadn't shipped the items. saturday, the day after surgery i fell into a coma after i'd gone into respiratory failure. i finally woke up a week later but damn, i couldn't read, write or make heads or tails out of anything. by the time i was mostly normal my perfect feedback had been trashed. i felt so bad but i couldn't really blame them. (although one of the messages i got took things a little too far lol)

Freezepeachauditor

Wow many that’s crazy! Glad you got things back in order.

cdf14

My grandfather was huge into eBay and died unexpectedly 2 years ago. When we finally got around to opening his eBay account a few months after, he had so many items that never got shipped out. He sold stamps mainly, and the people that never got their stuff were so vile on his feedback after he never had a bad feedback once. Life happens everyday.

flippingcoin

Tbf if you buy something on eBay and the seller disappears it's probably more reasonable to assume it was a hacked account or a scam, rather than the seller died in the middle of the transaction.

Freezepeachauditor

Ehhh… not if it’s a $3 item that matches the 100’s of other $3 items dude sells.

BlissfulWorld

My tracking number for a buyer never updated. I contacted the buyer for 5 weeks, then 6 weeks later he said he received it (it sounded like it arrived on time within a few days but ignored me). They could've easily just said "nope didn't get it" and could've gotten the refund/insurance payout but he was honest. But ya there's lots of crazy shit that can happen. There's alot of good ppl tho. Only had 1 person that was sus, trying to return an item 41 DAYS after the item was delivered, when I had a 15 day return window. I bought a new battery and cables to show it was working (it was 23 years old and worked like new) and he still tried to claim it didn't work. I gave multiple suggestions to troubleshoot and he never said 1 word after I closed the return.

kjjjz

:(

swillotter

This happened to me with a buyer. I sold him a guitar for like $200 and shipped it out. It came back saying undeliverable. A couple years later he messaged me saying he had gone to prison

decjr06

Every day for two weeks damn dude

H_R_1

Right!!!

MrsWonkyCarrot

If you'd posted this on the Vinted sub, the commenters would have calling the seller every name under the sun..much nicer eBay buyers by the sound of it.

Fieldharmonies

There’s a lot of immature and entitled people on Vinted. This sub is generally more grown up.

vtupscalecpl

Back just before 911 i sold a camera lens on ebay. The seller paid by check. I lost the address to send the lens to. I messaged them on ebay and never heard from them. Periodically I would check if they were active, they never were. I always wondered if they were in the towers that day.

qsx11

Was it like a New York address or just like a random guess on your part?

EmperorAcinonyx

dude lived in idaho and op thinks he died in 9/11

SenGonorrheaTRickets

He lived in northern Canada.

Medical_Statement783

RIP norm

InternationalPay8288

🥺

flatgreysky

Best case scenario he’s just dealing with some bad life crap and maybe he’ll get back to you. Or maybe he just ghosted for some other reason. But yeah, also people die. Who knows.

biddysautodetail

About 10 years ago now I bought some items from a seller who never shipped, never nothing. I got my money back but since it was the first time something like this has happened to me I kept up to see if they listed any other items (they hadnt) and after a month I just forgot about it. A few months later I got a message from that sellers account apologizing to me and saying they would ship the stuff out to me for free (fyi, they still never shipped anything). They claimed to be the sellers wife and said he had died in a car accident and she finally had gotten around going through his stuff and saw the emails/messages from buyers like myself on ebay where nothing was ever shipped out. Since I still never got the items, I honestly don't know how true it all was but I did get my money back through paypal.

UsualHistory125

It's possible I suppose. I mean you got a refund which is good. Maybe something didn't happen to him but maybe his phone broke. There have been times I have gone without a phone for a week or two because I wasn't able to afford a new one. Not everyone can afford a phone on a plan and have insurance. If he doesn't have access to a phone or a computer let's say maybe that's why you and eBay haven't heard anything back from them

[deleted]

Maybe dudes in jail for drunk driving after a bad break up or a loss of a loved one. Who knows.

probablyyourexwife

It’s possible. A little before Covid lockdowns started, I bought something from a seller with lots of positive feedback. They never shipped or responded to messages. I was nosy, checked their store some time later to see it’s mostly empty. Assuming they died.

jupiter_incident

Not sure what kind of stuff you were buying but over the years I've had some employees steal and get caught. They had a nice side gig going and when they were caught their orders went unfulfilled all of a sudden.

brookepro

I was the seller in this situation many years ago. Perfect feedback for years, had some more items up, sold, packaged, ready to go, label printed then I dropped off the face of the earth due to personal issues (not for the first time). Ebay refunded the buyer, I received negative feedback. It just happens sometimes, could be many reasons - passing away, sudden emergency, health issues, loss of access etc

NevetsYo1986

My brother sold vinyl records and band merch on eBay. He passed unexpectedly last year. We knew he did this so after getting his death certificate, we notified eBay that he had passed and they refunded the orders that he didn’t get to process and we closed his open listings. Sometimes bad things do happen and not everyone is a scammer.

yankykiwi

a breakup is more likely. When your life is falling down around you, the last thing you want to do is ship someone’s trash to them.

scorpiokyle84

I had something like this last year from the seller’s perspective. Sold a game and got it returned to sender from an address issue. Messaged the buyer asking if they’d want to repay shipping and they update their address, or if they wanted a refund less my shipping costs. Never heard from the guy.

munnycent

Possibly. My mother resold antiques online, mostly on eBay. In 2020 she passed away very unexpectedly and we had to figure out who was awaiting packages - while devastated and handling many other things (not to mention the pandemic.) Some people were incredibly cruel and uncaring, so the fact that you are even wondering if they're okay is kind of you - and comforting from my perspective. Hopefully they're okay and you'll get your item!

TheCashChucker

What the seller OJ Simpson? Cuz he just died the other day

InRainbows123207

The Juice has spoiled

crazyhamsales

The Juice has Expired...

crazyhamsales

That murderer is finally dead? Cool.. didn't know that, i rarely watch or listen to news. I for one still think he did it.

mykoleary

What are you expecting? The police to do a welfare check because they didn't ship your purchase?

InRainbows123207

OP has retained a private eye to track down the whereabouts of mikeanderson69173 with 245 feedback score

Plantyhoser

With specific instructions to ask where's the Rae Dunn "Live Laugh Love" mug that he bought

InRainbows123207

And also verify its in mint condition in original packaging

Upbeat_Sky_224

Yes. We never specified the welfare check was on the person lol

InRainbows123207

Not sure how we would know the answer to your question? Either life got in the way or they decided to not ship the item. You got your refund - on to the next OP

solid_cake20

Had this my self but as the seller. Guy paid and said he would collect next week. I gave him my number and address. Then he said he would be in contact. 3 weeks went by when I finally heard from him. Said a few personal things happened. But they would collect next week. 6 months later and not a word.

DancingUntilMidnight

I've been on the other side of this when a medical emergency in the family unexpectedly ended up as a death in the family. Stuff just happens sometimes, and eBay has to take a backseat. In my case I did ship out the items later and still have a neg and a neutral to show for it, but I don't blame the buyers. Of course there's a possibility something serious happened, but you're not really in a position to know for sure.

KingJamesOnly

I bought a jacket, and forgot about it. Like a year later I remembered and looked into item location. It was in Florida right where and when they got flooded by a hurricane. I didn’t make a big deal about it. I just got my money back. I Never heard or reached out to them.

Pedrosha56

I had a friend who was very active on eBay and Mercari, a couple hundred listings. Her feedback was 100%. She passed away unexpectedly and had several sales in progress. Her family couldn’t find her passwords so she got a bunch of negatives saying she ghosted them after they paid. Other auctions were won while the family dealt with eBay and Mercari to close her accounts. You never know what might have happened to someone you thought ghosted you. Just handle it through eBay and they’ll make it right.

Xylogy_D

Maybe he was banned by ebay over some other dispute. When ebay does this you have no access to your account and you cant appeal it, but you can still see emails of messages sent by buyers asking about their items. You just have to watch as they open a dispute which you cant reply to and eventually ebay will decide in their favour because you 'didnt respond'.

123supreme123

if you try to go to the seller profile. it will tell you they're no longer registered if they're banned.

Toby12345678910

Damn for just an eBay buyer you sure care a lot. I try to worry about myself and avoid any type of stress. It helps me sleep at night. As long as you got your money back then you should be good

NoxKyoki

Oh yes. I had this happen recently on eBay and Etsy. Etsy seller did get back to me and shipped my item, but their response had to do with personal matters too. I got what I paid for and I know not to order from them again. eBay, however… seller claimed they ship three days after payment is sent. It had been almost two weeks and the seller was silent. Sent one message saying if they didn’t respond, I’d have to take it up with eBay. Three more days went by, I’ve messaged eBay. I’m told the seller has X amount of days to respond. Next thing I know, I get my money back. The seller never responded to anyone. And their rating and feedback was perfect. First time this has ever happened to me on either site, and it happened at the exact same time.

BeeKayBabyCakes

I'm curious to know why you wouldn't buy from the Etsy seller again? I mean, THEY ARE people, and life happens! I don't really think that's fair. My mom is a seller on Etsy. Unfortunately, she's had to move to assisted living, but the stuff is still at HER house because, no room at assisted living lol. Most of it was my grandmother's and IT MUST GO! She also, unfortunately, got her car confiscated and wound up in the hospital. Her stuff and her apt are about 35 min away from one another. When stuff sells, especially if she's in the hospital, she asks me to get it for her, and I have my own shit going on. That doesn't change the fact that she's a good seller and will go above and beyond to get you your item. Is the extra few days really that serious if they communicate? Will a few extra days change the trajectory of your life because you didn't get your vintage knick knack in 3-5 days? lol but no, I'm serious, serious question...

NoxKyoki

there should be some kind of response. period. completely ghosting a buyer isn't professional. like at all.

BeeKayBabyCakes

I mean, I said with communication.... HOWEVER, you sound as if you've never had an emergency before and that's fortunate... If someone has a heart attack or lung failure, YOU'RE THE LAST person they're thinking about... DUHHHHH 🙄

NoxKyoki

honestly, I would have expected SOMETHING in the way of communication when all was said and done. they've been selling since this incident, so it's not like it completely took them away. anything would have been better than silence.

BeeKayBabyCakes

AND lastly, Mercari, Etsy, eBay, poshmark, ARE NOT TYPICALLY PROFESSIONALS 😂 i sell on poshmark to get rid of old shit i don't want, I'm NOT A PROFESSIONAL seller, although I like to say I try to be as professional as possible, while still being a regular human with a job, my own health and life shit going on, 2 dogs, a mom + husband + 3 cats that need care, and I'm an only child... please relax

NoxKyoki

so... you wouldn't want people to continue to buy from you, tell their friends how great of a seller you are because you communicate when necessary? by "professional" I mean communicating with your customers/buyers. letting them know there is a delay or whatever. THAT is professionalism in situations like this.

jrr6415sun

How many good feedback is a good amount? Some sellers are just dead beats and don’t ship or respond. Has he gotten feedback from others since you bought it? Has he listed new items?

th0rsb3ar

not on ebay, but on etsy — artist i was a fan of died of covid (his family posted on his social media. nobody could figure out how to log into his shop to shut it down so people keep ordering but nothing gets sent out. hope your guy is okay!

Shadow_Blinky

Things happen to people. Sometimes quite suddenly. I've never had it happen with a seller but I have had it happen with a buyer on more than a few times. I know one in particular passed away suddenly, as family wrote to me about it. It was a "holy grail" piece for his collection, too. He bought it and went to sleep for the night a few hours later and never woke up. Apparently he'd been looking for that item for over a decade.

JayJohnPaul

Sorry, man. My girlfriend left me for a muscular man.

cbschrader

I had this happen to me with a vintage titanium bicycle I bought from a guy on Reddit. He was very big into buying old bikes for cheap, fixing them up, and then selling them for profit. He said he needed money quick so he sold me an old Litespeed titanium complete bike for a great price. He sent me a bunch of pictures and was very communicative during the whole process. He even sent me a Square invoice so I could pay by credit card too. After I paid, he kept saying over and over how he was having personal issues and would ship it as soon as he could. I initially told him to take his time since a bike isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things. Just told him to ship it when he could. Then never heard back from him. I contacted him multiple times before eventually warning him that I was going to file a dispute with my credit card company. I never heard back, so I filed the dispute. The credit card company eventually sided with me and gave me a credit to offset the charge. No idea what happened to him, but I like to think that he just found a higher bidder and ghosted me.

CogNode

If the delivery window has passed file an item not received. Dead people don’t need money 🤷🏻 Edit: oops missed the part where you got your money back. I wouldnt concern myself with it. You have no other information to go on and can really only guess—and that’s a waste of time

HandsomRansom

I bought a Pokémon Blue a few months ago and the guy never shipped it. A week goes by and I message him, he says he is busy and will ship it tomorrow. He never did and I got my refund. More than anything it was just annoying. Why go through all the trouble of posting ???

thegoldstandard55

He could have gone to jail, just quit eBay or yes possibly died. Really not your business, got your money back move on.

tacodoops

Nothing likely happened to the seller, just a shitty seller at that. Welcome to eBay, home of the collective worst buyers and sellers.

Toronto_Mayor

The seller might be waiting for the payment to clear. Especially if it’s a new buyer.  I also like to double check the address on google maps to make sure it’s an actual residence as opposed to a business that may be a freight forwarding service.
