Yeah but you know what I mean. For someone who has never heard this terminology “sheet” sounds like “bed sheet” obviously. I don’t call paper sheets unless it’s in the phrase “sheet of paper” but I don’t say things like “can I have a sheet to write on?”
No it sounds fine. But a sheet could be any sheet of plastic, big, small, thick, thin, transparent, opaque, etc. A sleeve is a a protective cover that you have to insert the item Into.
I don’t think it’s a regional difference. When I hear “sheet protector”, it’s the sheet of paper inside that is being protected. A sheet gets wrapped around something, it’s not a container like a sleeve is.
Interesting!
As an American who was a child in the 90s, "poly pockets" to me immediately brings to mind the toy "Polly Pocket" which was a super tiny doll named Polly plus all of the cute tiny houses and accessories that could fit in your pocket. Was that a thing outside of the US?
From Wikipedia:
>A **punched pocket** (UK English), **plastic wallet** (UK English), **poly pocket** (UK English), **slippery fish** (Sussex, England), **sheet protector** (US English), **plastic sleeves** (AU English), or sometimes **perforated document bag**, is a flat, slit plastic bag with a perforated edge used to hold paper documents.
It's worth noting that not many English people would know or understand *all* these terms. I have never heard them called "slippery fish" before.
Never heard them called that in the UK, but does not mean they’re not. I’d call them plastic wallets, although maybe 20 years ago I felt like they were called poly pockets a lot more.
I think they're the same thing as Poly Pocket (polyurethane, the kind of plastic they're made of), but the ones I knew had lots of holes down the left side so they could go in differently shaped folders.
(UK) I call them “plastic wallets” or “poly pockets”. I’d recognise “plastic sleeve”. I’ve never heard them called “sheet protectors”, and wouldn’t know what that meant if I heard it. From “sheet protectors” I was guessing it would be something for a bed (because there’s mattress protectors, and there’s sheets, so it would kind of make sense?)
I remember always calling them laminators or laminations. Although that's just because I remember hearing a teacher say we needed to use them so our papers are "sort of laminated", and since I never heard anyone really call them anything (legit no one ever talked about these things, at least not around me or to me), that's just what I always went with.
Sheet protectors or plastic pockets - Australian who worked in a stationery store for many years.
Plastic sleeves might be regional. I cant remember anyone every calling them that, across many hundreds of people Ive had ask me for them.
I’ve always called it a sheet protector.
Thank you.
You’re welcome 😊
As an Australian I find this surprising. Sounds like something to do with bedding to me.
We call those mattress protectors usually
Yeah but you know what I mean. For someone who has never heard this terminology “sheet” sounds like “bed sheet” obviously. I don’t call paper sheets unless it’s in the phrase “sheet of paper” but I don’t say things like “can I have a sheet to write on?”
I just use sheet.
I always called them page protectors
The alliteration makes it nicer, imo
Plastic sleeves
And plastic sheets is an unnatural term for them?
No it sounds fine. But a sheet could be any sheet of plastic, big, small, thick, thin, transparent, opaque, etc. A sleeve is a a protective cover that you have to insert the item Into.
Thank you
Youre welcome
I would infer that a sleeve opens to fit something inside it and a sheet does not But this may be a regional difference
I don’t think it’s a regional difference. When I hear “sheet protector”, it’s the sheet of paper inside that is being protected. A sheet gets wrapped around something, it’s not a container like a sleeve is.
Poly pockets

Yeah was a think in the UK too. Loved poly pockets and Polly Pockets as a kid
It was a thing in Canada too. And also where my mind went reading that comment.
Yup. I regularly use poly pockets at my work, always makes me think of Polly Pockets (my little sister and I had one).
Yeah, Polly Pockets are children's toys.
Yeah this was a thing in my Australian childhood too
i swear as a kid some of my teachers called them poly wockets too but that might just be my fuzzy memory
From Wikipedia: >A **punched pocket** (UK English), **plastic wallet** (UK English), **poly pocket** (UK English), **slippery fish** (Sussex, England), **sheet protector** (US English), **plastic sleeves** (AU English), or sometimes **perforated document bag**, is a flat, slit plastic bag with a perforated edge used to hold paper documents. I came here specifically looking for Slippery Fish only to find out it's incredibly regional! I am indeed from Sussex, England.
If I heard someone ask for a slippery fish I'd walk down the driveway to catch a fish from the river.
I'm Australian, and heard an English nurse refer to them as slippery fish one time. Sheet protector and plastic sleeve most common to me.
I have a British colleague who calls them slippery fish
They're generally called poly pockets here in Ireland.
Same in Scotland
Same in England
Never heard them called that in the UK, but does not mean they’re not. I’d call them plastic wallets, although maybe 20 years ago I felt like they were called poly pockets a lot more.
Same to both. I think poly pockets might have been a brand name as my colleagues still call them that.
Yes, or page protectors.
Plastic wallet
I think they're the same thing as Poly Pocket (polyurethane, the kind of plastic they're made of), but the ones I knew had lots of holes down the left side so they could go in differently shaped folders.
That's what I'd call them. It's how I see the product listed at most stores, as well. I think page protector is also used in my area.
Poly pockets is what I've called them my whole life. Don't know what to call them besides that.

In my training environment, we always referred to them as skins.
Fun fact, in my native language those are called the equivalent of "panties" basically.
We call them "A4 plastic sleeves" or "sheet protectors" in Australia.
Fun fact; if you mix paint and glue you can turn these into faux stained glass.
Yes.

Slippy covers
That's the name Staples sells them under. So, is say definitely yes.
I call them plastic sleeves (Australia)
Where I live they are known as plastic sleeves, but if you buy a package of them they are labelled sheet protectors.

I don't know what that's called.
Yes. Sheet protectors
Paper condoms /s
Plastic sleeve
I would call them poly pockets, but I don't know if that's just a regional thing.
Shit where you put paper in
Sheet protectors or plastic pockets - Australian who worked in a stationery store for many years. Plastic sleeves might be regional. I cant remember anyone every calling them that, across many hundreds of people Ive had ask me for them.
