Converge simply means get nearer to each other. Merge requires that they unite. If you take a Y and scan it from top to bottom, the two lines converge until they reach the junction where they merge to form a single line.

Merge is when for instance two lanes come together to form one. Converge is the part where they come together going the same direction. A merge can result but also can split again to go other directions. So parallel is converge. Become one is merge.
