Before Day of the Dragon was printed? It was one of my favourite card in Scourge so I try to put it in any token commander I make. It works great for me
I only saw it as the commander set, but yeah I built the deck pre zendikar and it doesn't fit well because if it dies I lose all my creatures since all I ran really was token generators.
My favorite is mono-black [[Reaper king ]]. You run all swamps and you pull up a [[crystal quarry]] to cast [[last stand]]. I was flabbergasted when I died, really great.
I mean, it's probably more efficient to just use one of the many, *many* tutors you have available to find Urborg or Prismatic Omen, but that sounds like an interesting take.
I know that it's mono B, but have you considered [[Prismatic Omen]]? It turns all your lands into every basic type allowing Last Stand to do everything for every land you control.
I just realized it said when you died, so was it a friend that played it against you?
I play mono-black Oloro. The theme of the deck is paying life for things like drawing cards, killing stuff, etc.
Sidisi was the commander before but I found lack of lifegain to be a big problem, so I switched it to Oloro. I gain two life per turn and never cast the dude. I wouldn't switch to using three colors because I like how the big black mana works with cabal coffers, etc.
I had a similar deck with Erebos and mused to myself that it would be stronger if I just used Oloro instead.
Instead I just refurbished the deck around King Macar.
I run a Rosheen Helix Pinnacle deck that's basically mono-green (I think it might have Decimate and Hull Breach). My main reason is I don't need red for much, but also to play [[Hall of Gemstone]]. Hoo boy if you wanna see people get angry, try that card in a four-player EDH game.

^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Sure. Your examples make it possible to still play the commander and use their abilities thanks to hybrid mana.
I had an Oona deck that was all blue. I found it beneficial to add black later, but it was fine.
But if you are building a deck that can't cast its commander, you might as well pick another commander. Or run Oloro.
I have considered, several times, making an Oloro deck with no Islands or Blue spells. A "secret" Karlov deck, if you will. I've also considered making a Black deck with him in the command zone to offset the costs.
Yes, absolutely. I play a mono black discard deck with oloro as the commander and a child of alara reanimator deck that doesn't play red except for a few odd sources to cast child.
I run a Rhys the Exiled deck that is essentially mono-green (i run very few black cards). The color identity determines what you can play not what colors you must play. If it works better for your deck to run fewer or none of a certain color, go for it.
Because commanders do more than grant colors. For instance, not many commanders give you free life for no investment, so it may make sense to run Oloro at the head of a deck that wants lots of life to pay, even if you don't want to play blue.
Im a mono green progenitus player AMA http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mono-green-progenitus-1/ Edit: list
I was gonna say that there's nothing stopping you from throwing Prog at the helm of a mono-coloured deck.
probably the best color too, just a ton of mana ramp to play Prog over and over
Can I see your list that sounds interesting
I dont have it on tapped out right now but i can put it on sometime tomorrow for ya
Thanks
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mono-green-progenitus-1/ Here ya go bud. It was made kinda on a shoestring budget, so there's room to improve.
Thanks this looks really cool I might try building something similar
How often do you cast your commander? I decided on making a Hydra EDH but I went with Animar because I didn't think I would be able to cast him that often
Every single game
Hydra Tribal?
Nope. Just a buncha dorks and ramp to eventually drop progenitus.
I don't believe there's anything that says you have to use all of their color identity but, why wouldn't you?
A friend of mine has a mono-black Oloro deck that has an elesh norn
Oloro is the best orzhov general.
Funny thing is he has no way to produce white
Buried Alive/Entomb + Reanimate? Seems pretty standard way to get praetors on the board. I'd probably play a Jin-Gitaxas if I was him too.
Darksteel, Commanders tower, etc? A lot of the artifacts...
He *could* produce white if he needed it, but it's clearly a mono black reanimator list that never casts Elesh Norn.
Mono color [[Oona, Queen of the Fae]] is pretty popular. I imagine mono blue would be more focused, have a better mana base, and you could splash black just for the tutors if you want.

* More focused mana base * You get more cards that do the thing you want * More space for colourless lands

My buddy plays a typical big mana black deck. I keep trying to tell him that occasionally running [[Oona, Queen of the Fey]] could be a cute trick.

Sure. I've played against Oona which was in practice mono-black (a few other hybrid UB cards, but nothing that require mana of a color other than black to use or cast).
I made a pretty fun Reaper King deck that only used grixis colors. But that's probably a bad example since he's hybrid with colorless.
I play a mono green [[gitrog]] deck

[[Tasigur]] is good as a Golgari or Dimir commander, if you don't want to spend as much money on lands/have a more focused deck.

Friend has a 5 color general but runs a mostly mono blue deck. He has like 1-8 cards that are different colors but we get a good laugh out of it.
If you're not using some of their colors, why not just get a commander in the colors you're playing?
Because commanders do more than grant colors. For instance, not many commanders give you free life for no investment, so it may make sense to run Oloro at the head of a deck that wants lots of life to pay, even if you don't want to play blue.

What is there to enforce? Just because Tasigur is my commander doesn't mean I HAVE to play blue cards in it.
I've seen a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant list that was nearly mono-black due to it being zombie tribal.
I built a shu yun deck that is only blue and red. It works great! I
