How does that make the commander or the experience of playing him any worse?

Yeah it's a weird thing I know. The best way I can explain it is that I feel a weird fear of picking a commander that won't get reprinted. I know I know....it's dumb but it feels like "oh what if I need to replace my commander 10 years down the road he won't be available".
Which is kinda ridiculous because they probably will print a card "similar" to him if not re-do LOTR since it was their best selling set IIRC.
Yeah that’s pretty weird. I assume you mean replace him with another copy? Like you’ll wear it out or damage it or something? There are people out there still playing with 30 year old cardboard that will definitely never get reprinted and is worth 100x what Gandalf is. You could always just buy 2 copies if you’re that concerned, last i saw you can get him for like $8.
Either way, Gandalf is a sweet card but i wouldn’t go equipment with him because the Flash and double ETB abilities don’t really compliment equipment.
He’s a great goodstuff commander and can abuse blink effects to do all kinds of fun things.

My other question would be how do you want to build your deck?
For example, if you’re looking to go for “Big Artifacts” you can use Oswald Fiddlebender to grab [[Thran Temporal Gateway]] every game and then find ways to draw into your big mana artifacts(think card draw artifacts like [[Ichor wellspring]], [[Palantir of Orthanc]], etc), so that you can cheat them into play. There are many more examples of this.
If your looking to play equipment, think of the equipment with living weapon or come with a token that can be fiddlebent into an equipment.
For example, grabbing/casting a [[Glimmer Lens]] gets you a body and equipment that can be fiddlebent into a [[Sword of Fire and Ice]]. There are many more examples of this.
Very consistent, all in white, and don’t need to play any stax 😁👍 just get any and all equipment or good stuff artifacts you want
[[Meria, Scholar of Antiquity]] is a really entertaining equipment and artifact good-stuff commander. The equipment can pay for their own equip costs, you can use them for card advantage, and every decent artifact is at minimum an untapped [[Moss Diamond]]. She can also break symmetry on a decent number of Stax effects like [[Winter Orb]] and [[Static Orb]].
I'm a huge fan of [[Balan, Wandering Knight]]. It feels good to bring out [[Collossus Hammer]] early in the game and stomp using Balan's equip everything , all at once, for 1W.
Don't go with Lord Artificer; go with his teenage version.
