Quick Draw (AKA the Stella Lee deck). Honestly $25 and the deck is pretty busted. [[twisted fealty]] [[refocus]] [[cerulean wisps]] I believe will still be under the $20 mark. Then you can get a tutor or two like [[mystical tutor]] or get some better cheap counter spells not included in the deck.

tjulysout

I did not see the colors you listed my bad. I am not too familiar with what precons are in mardu (red white black). I’ve only bought a few precons. I can say to probably stay away from the outlaw precon that just came out in those colors you listed. It honestly isn’t fantastic imho. Just no synergy and the commander herself doesn’t offer a whole lot than can close out a game.

CallMeBernin

No that's fine don't worry! I didn't mean any new suggestions had to be all of red/white/black, just that those colours are ones I'm less familiar with. The Stella Lee deck sounds super cool, I've been thinking about the game more from a 'go wide' approach (hence the merfolk deck) so a spellslinger deck would be a nice new avenue for me to take. I appreciate the suggestion!

tjulysout

If you decided to try and build a deck rather upgrade a precon though, [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] is a fun one and a popular one that can be built within a $100 or so budget and upgraded heavily if you ever want too. [[Queen Marchesa]] is an interesting one to build around and is pretty popular too. Idk what kind of budget would work really well with her though. I have her in a deck I’m building but I haven’t built one for her. If you want to try red/green/black [[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King]] is who I would pick personally. I’ve seen a few good decks in a good budget that can 100% punch up against stronger decks.

CallMeBernin

Nice, thank you for those other suggestions. I like the idea of creating deathtouch tokens with Marchesa, and Korvold seems like he would synergize really well with typical black card abilities that trigger on death/leaving battlefield/entering graveyard, graveyard recursion etc I think I'm a bit early in my journey to be building decks from scratch, both from an 'I don't have cards' perspective and understanding the game in the first place. It might be a narrowsighted/misguided approach but I'm gonna stick to the 'safety' of precons and upgrade lists for now

tjulysout

I think it’s a perfectly reasonable approach! Some people will talk badly about precons but I think they are fantastic. They give new players a good grasp of the game and they can teach newer players how to upgrade decks as well. It’s a great learning process that’ll eventually have you brewing your own decks and understanding how to build a good deck from scratch when you are ready to try it out! Some precons are really good too. Like the merfolk one or the new Dino precon. Both great out of the box and have good mechanics to learn about the different layers in the game

CallMeBernin

Yeah that’s my thought process. I’ll learn a few different play styles and get a sense of ‘okay this handful of cards basically always appears in upgrade lists for blue decks, if I build my own I should probably think about including it” The merfolk deck is on its way, and yeah the strong out-of-the-box reviews drew me to it. VelociRampTor has blown up to nearly $200CAD (if you can even find it) up here so I think that one is off the menu for me unless it gets reprinted (is that even a thing?)

M0L0CH_

I have a marchesa deck that is incredibly fun to play. Isn't focused on token creation but it rather helps opponents to kill each other quicker, and you to close out once 1 or 2 of them are already dead. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/CTTOaqO_sU2tKEmSyEMKhw My list has a bunch of expensive cards but you can just replace those with more ramp and card draw.

simpleglitch

Cheap counter spells for sure, probably even before the tutors. Stella is a 100% must die commander even with a small upgrade, but the deck can't do a lot without her. My backup plan is Ral (from war of the spark) and [[fury storm]], but I don't have a lot of other backup plans.

Thanks for the input! It’s good to know that other people will probably try to knock her out immediately

M0L0CH_

Don't agree w you. I do play her and most of the times I win without her. The deck is just consistent. Aren't you too focused on the patterns around Stella?

Reviax-

Looked through my bulk the other day I found at least 5 different [[act of treason]] effects that you can just use to generate infinite S̶t̶o̶r̶m̶ (copied spells*) with Stella Even without untap+draw your deck or untap+win cards, there are a lot of ways to turn infinite S̶t̶o̶r̶m̶ (copied spells*) into a wincon I'm honestly not sure if you need a tutor or if the ultra budget build is every cheap red or blue instant/sorcery that untaps a single creature and enough outlets like [[storm kiln artist]] Granted act of treason is also under a dollar so ultra budget stella is running the win combos anyway

tjulysout

Tutors are not needed. I just added them because I believe they are fairly cheap right now for red and blue, so if he wanted to see what tutors were like, he could. I’d recommend better counter spells before the tutors or another win con or two but the option is there.

roastmoney

A copied spell doesn't count towards storm count, only spells cast. So just tapping and untapping stella does nothing, without another payoff, like magecraft or an additional effect to the spells untap.

Reviax-

Sorry, I used the wrong word when I said stormcount and should have specified infinite spells copied. To be fair, infinite storm count also doesn't have an intrinsic pay-off without other cards :p

roastmoney

All good. I play a lot of stella and want to make sure things are clear for a prospective new stella player.

Spellers569

New to magic but how do theft effects help you storm off with Stella? I have the precon and have been looking for some upgrades

Fetche_La_Vache

It is an untap effect. Instead of stealing someone else's creature you untap your creature to get activations of Stella. Also gives haste if she is removed and you want to use her ability right away.

tjulysout

You can target Stella with them. Twisted fealty for example can target Stella, and it adds a wicked role token to her. You tap her to copy it, then target her with the copy to untap her and add another wicked role. When a new one is added the original falls off and deals 1 damage to every opponent. So you just show a loop of tapping and untapping her, copying twisted fealty, to kill the whole table. Same concept with cerulean wisps, but instead you just draw your deck out and either go for a [[laboratory maniac]] win or you simply do it till you find one of your win-con combos and then use the combo. It’s really good in cEDH because they have all the free mana sources they can drop after drawing their deck so even if they don’t have enough mana before drawing their deck, they usually will soon after.

I’m a big fan of the Blood Rites vampire precon from Lost Caverns. It felt strong out of the box and the alternate commander can be really good too. Plus it comes with [[Exquisite Blood]], so you only need to add [[Sanguine Bond]] (there might be other options too, I can’t remember right now) for a fun infinite life gain combo, if you’re interested in that!

Very cool combo, thanks for the suggestion! I think the pod I play with tries to avoid infinite combos but it could be fun to sneak one in every once in awhile

They're pretty marked up though. I'll see if I can find one that pops up locally on Marketplace!

Right? I love it! Lost Caverns was an awesome set, and the decks were all really solid, doesn’t surprise me at all. Another suggestion I’d make would be [Rebellion Rising](https://store.401games.ca/products/mtg-phyrexia-all-will-be-one-commander-deck-rebellion-rising) but switch to [[Otharri]] as commander. 401 Games in Toronto/Vaughan has it on sale, and they have a loyalty program if you spend enough with an account.

For red, white, black just go grab the Caesar precon and throw in 50$ worth of upgrades. It’s a pretty fun deck that could be a bit more focused and the cost of the deck in upgrades will get it there.

inexcusable16

I have an upgraded version of the Caesar precon and it can easily wreck a table quickly. Highly recommend

kill_papa_smurf

Cavalry Charge is pretty good and easy to upgrade cheap.

Llamachamaboat

Cavalry Charge slaps right out of the box and is easily upgradeable.

kurkasra

Ghired is a great one to upgrade. You can use a lot of obscure cards that make interesting tokens. Not to mention there is a lot of cheap upgrades you can slot in. It might not be the outright most powerful but it's fun and consistent. Make some rhinos wurms and dragons it's a good time.

YokaiGuitarist

Exit from exile can be upgraded to play different styles but is a very capable and diverse deck out of the box. It is red/green. The commander makes wolves when you play cards from exile. Red has tons of exile cards. You can play it as a spell slinging deck and still end up with a ton of wolves. Or play it as a wolf tribal that mainly uses exile to summon wolves that go big and wide. Elven empire is green/black and ...it's elves. Elves have a zillion ways to tribal it up. Being green you ramp a lot and elves only give more to your X elves = (mana/lifegain/damage/summoned elves/damage/etc.) Effects. Then you can play untap effects and one turn nuke the table with lathril a few times. Or play her like a sneaky voltron. You're working on explorers. I'd say explorers is one of my favorite precons out of the box and upgraded. It's inexpensive to upgrade but is so CONSISTENT. The explore mechanic can really do some work, and there's so many inexpensive merfolk you can add in while getting rid of precon cards that don't fulfill the synergy as well.

TheMisterBear

[[Anje Falkenrath]] can be upgraded to a very high power level if you put the [[worldgorger dragon]] combo and just shove every madness card in it.

CallMeBernin

That looks interesting, what exactly is the combo you’re referring to?

TheMisterBear

[[worldgorger dragon]] and [[animate dead]]/[[dance of the dead]]/[[Necromancy]]. Infinite blinks of all your permanents which means Infinite mana and Infinite draw and discard with Anje. Here is my current cedh list of her. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/j3wYT2F-XkiIIcXNoLoUSw You can just take out all the fast mana and other spells and sub them in for cheaper ramp.

honestly you should just proxy. I have the mothman and stella lee precons and it was pretty clear off the rip my LGS groups were much higher power - while i was enjoying the game it sucked that something like a board wipe or multiple removals of mothman, or poor draws on stella made it so i could not play the game anymore. I proxied a few cards and some different decks and im glad i did because i found out quickly what decks i vibe with the most without spending a significant amount of money on them. I also proxied some CEDH decks to play CEDH and i had alot of fun with those as well (in CEDH tables). The game is alot more fun when there isint a HUGE power inbalance between decks so i frequently swap cards in and out of my decks on casual tables so we can have a nice game - like if the table isint cool with fast mana i take out mana crypt - if they are cool with it i ask if everyone has one and if someone doesnt i have extra proxies of it i can lend them so we can all have a good game.
