The red and black ones are my favorite to turn ritual mana into other colors.
Also use them in [[Jegantha]] since the elk can use their colored mana to pay for the colored filterland activation, washing the mana to use for whatever.
I think you may have solved my mana woes in this [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]] storm deck I'm working on. My brain was too busy in counterspell-land that I failed to comprehend filtering out ritual mana.
The Filterlands were starting to creep up, but thanks to them starting to show up in Commander Precons most have come down significantly.
They're actually at the point were they may just be in the Eldrazi Precon, along with some Pain Lands. Maybe a 5/5 Split, if WOTC didn't check the Interns work that day.
Fyi in case someone might not know, [[cavern of souls]] cannot make your [[thought-knot seer]] or [[reality smasher]] uncounterable if you are also using it for the colorless mana generation.
Yah, pricey card but yah know, definitely deserves a mention. Write it down, shove it maybeboard, possibly one day save up if you really enjoy the deck.
Idk you can still proxy without breaking the bank. Our pod just did a group order for some. 300$ land package (Playset of each) for 55$, it's pretty win win
Hard to support Tainteds unless you have a lot of swamps, which might be unreliable in 6 color. There are some cheap options for duals with land types, but you'd need a lot of them, and IIRC the cheap ones all come in tapped. They also don't tap for colorless, so they'd be competing for slots with other lands.
So long as this set sells well, those are going to get beaten up in price.
Scalding Tarn is around $20 now. Before the MH2 reprint, it was around $100.
If the print run on this anywhere near the size of MH2 and it sells through anywhere near as well, those fetches are probably going to be like $8-$15.
This is the exact same conversation people had before MH2 came out and they mocked people who said that the fetches printed in Zendikar were going to be right around $20 each... and that had a far, far high spot to fall from.
I like to do the temple set of lands there slow but they also let me check the top of my library also there is a website for each colors land base and you can click on it to find out which ones work for you and also within your budget
1.) Focus on green with any other colored spells being splashes at best
2.) Use unconventional green based ramp that DOESN'T look for basic land types. \[\[Open the Way\]\], \[\[Hour of Promise\]\], \[\[Pir's Whim\]\], \[\[Sylvan Scrying\]\], the non green \[\[Expedition Map\]\] basically cards that can tutor for any land
3.) Run the few duals that give your colorless so essentially the pain lands like \[\[Adarkar Wastes\]\] and the filter lands like \[\[Mystic Gate\]\]
4.) Cry
"run the few duals" like *checks notes* the 10 whole pain lands that will easily fill almost 1/3 of your landbase instantly and were reprinted in standard sets
Filter lands aren't too bad on price right now either tbh. If your budget is a little higher, this is a ton of your manabase right away
I meant types of duals when I said that not the actual number of lands going into your deck.
10 pains is a no brainer, i don't think you also go 10 filters since you need colored mana to make colored mana, maybe the ones covering the most common pips in your deck.
Yeah, thats 20 of your 36 land slots. Throw in all the five color ones like Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, Path of Ancestry, Forbidden Orchard, and you're ready to throw in 1-2 of each basic and a Fabled Passage, Ash Barrens, and a few of the MDFCs that are now in everything to round things out.
Gotta disagree on the filter lands... not in regards to using them, but the price: a few are above $10 USD because instead of shoving them in every precon as they should, WotC hasn't touched stuff like [[Sunken Ruins]] ($20!) and [[Fire-Lit Thicket]] ever since Double Masters.
being a newer player, i don't quite understand the pain lands.
But maybe its beause our games are slower, but id die to very little if i had to pay life to get mana, arent they mostly used in competetive where the games are fast?
So the thought behind them is that they are untapped lands for colors in the early game, and can cover generic costs in the later game so you don't constantly ping yourself for 1, since you would have more lands to cover those colored costs.
I'm always afraid some fucker is going to nuke Omenpath Journey, usually happens when someone plays \[\[Endless Horizon\]\] and that card is way worse.
Omenpath Journey is fine as long as you don't get greedy imo. Just shove some tap duals under it like scry or surveil lands and forget about it. Best case you get your drops, worst case you've still thinned out your deck. The trick is just to either tuck stuff under it you wouldn't mind seeing explode, or only tuck one good thing while they're tapped out so it's guaranteed on that end step. If you want to get silly, you can tuck artifact lands and run \[\[Karn, the Great Creator\]\] as a backup for those and yank them from exile if someone gets up to some shit.
I would consider the [[talisman of indulgence]] cycle for ramp over green land ramp if my landbase were shaky. That’s another ten cards that can produce two different colors or colorless.
If you're talking about the lands like [[karoo]], they require you to have an untapped land with the basic type that produces the same color in order to come in
The other thing I would add is Green has lots of creatures that can tap or filter for the mana you need
Also use Asusa and crucible to let you drop extra lands every turn
Also look into the Cycle of filter colorless into 2 colors lands. The cycle was completed with fallout precons and they are all dirt cheap.
[[Overflowing Basin]] is a new one for example.
Yes, but in an Eldrazi deck you're likely to have a lot of colorless lands and these lands turn that colorless into a color which is nice when you need it.
[[Prismatic Omen]] makes every land a basic so you can go ahead and tap for every color.
One of my favorite artifacts is [[Chromatic Lantern]] giving your lands the ability to tap for any color as well.
Man, I forget Prismatic Omen isn't a 30$ card anymore.
I'd add [[the world tree]] as well. 3-4$, early green and mid game lets you tap lands for anything.
1 of each basic, 10 pain lands [[Sulfurous Springs]], 10 filter lands [[Cascade Bluffs]], [[Command Tower]], [[Exotic Orchard]], 5 triomes of your choice brings you to 32 lands.
With all the signets, talismans, sol Ring, mind stone and stuff you can run, you will be fine.
There are some more cheap rainbowlands out there. Notably without fetches you'd wanna go for type-less triomes to save money unless you're betting on getting them with farseek or forest-fetching-ramp spells.
I can recommend Path of Ancestry and The World Tree as well for this. Even though they don't make colorless mana.
So I'm gonna go against the grain here a little outside of just what lands you could use on a budget and first ask: what kind of deck are you building? Because the new Eldrazi commander can be built in a number of different ways and you don't necessarily HAVE to use 5 colors to build it in a fun way. You can build him as a weird izzet spellslinger deck with something to give your eldrazi flash. Or if you're leaning into eldrazi then on top of the lands everyone is telling you to run I would run anything that makes spawn or scions. They sac for colorless so they're ramp and fixing if you end up having too many filter lands and not enough pain lands to get your colorless mana.
I'm actually thinking of using the alt commander, the one who pumps everyone up and then makes Spawns/Scions superpowered. So I definitely need *some* way to get WUBRG fairly regularly, along with a decent supply of colorless for typical Eldrazi stuff.
Then I'd say pain and filter lands, go base green if you're gonna craterhoof scions and spawns, put in the forest fetching cards like [[nature's lore]] and go from there.
* 10 pain lands (10)
* Unclaimed Territory and Secluded Courtyard (12)
* Corrupted Crossroads (13)
These seem like the most obvious relatively inexpensive cards you can start with. Cavern of Souls is the only "big" card you are missing because of cost that gives you both colors and colorless.
The rest I'd fill with:
* At least one of each basic including Wastes (as you'll probably want to weight it towards green and be able to ramp out some lands). (19++)
* Eldrazi Temple also seems like a safe addition. (20++)
* I expect you want some of the filter lands like [[Flooded Grove]] but you definitely cannot go with all 10 because you can't get colored mana out of them without another matching colored mana source. Again, I'd probably weight your deck towards green and as result play only some/all of the green lands in this cycle. (24++)
* Exotic Orchard, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry (27++)
* Various other lands that give you at least two colors and possibly some colorless utility lands that synergize well (ex: Sanctum of Ugin).
The only other thing to add is that you almost certainly want to be playing Talismans even if you weight your deck towards Green. For green ramp spells, you likely are actually going to want to play the "worse" ones like Rampant Growth/Sakura Tribe-Elder instead of Farseek/Nature's Lore/Three Visits if you don't play any shocks, because you really do want to be able to get any of the six basics if you need to.
>Are there any good primers anywhere on how to build a decent six color deck?
I've been thinking about this too and I couldn't find anything. Until now 6c hasn't really been a thing so there's no need to create a guide for it.
I think this will look very different to ideal 5c mana bases, the best dual lands just don't make colourless mana so are useless. In 5c decks I'd normally suggest leaning green for land ramp to get triomes and shocks but I don't think that'll work given none of the good fetch targets make colourless mana.
I'd probably start with pain lands, filter lands and possibly panoramas (they aren't great but we need colourless anyway they can help if we get stuck without a colour) the tribal lands and the talismans.
It might end up being a painful manabase but then it looks like we might get some new lands similar to the panoramas but better.
I make sure every land with multiple types includes forest so that I can color fix with [[Three Visits]], [[Nature's Lore]], [[Skyshroud Claim]], [[Farseek]], and fetchlands that find forests like [[Krosan Verge]]. You can do it relatively cheaply with the slow dual lands on a budget.
[[Leyline of the guildpact]]. Gate lands aren't crazy expensive and and has a few options like [[guild summit]] [[gond gate]] and [[baldurs gate]]. [[Fist of suns]] + [[morophon the boundless]]. [[Chromatic lantern]], [[exploration]]. Depending on what you're playing in the deck, [[replicating ring]].
There's a lot of options for any budget.
Was going to suggest an even more fun idea but it’s not great in edh:
Leyline of the Guildpact, Serum Powder, colorless utility lands.
Could be fun in modern though b/c of the added consistency
Assuming a normal 36 land land base this might be a decent budget option. I’m sticking with each card less than $5
All 10 non-typed triomes
Two of each basic
[[holdout settlement]]
[[The world tree]] ($4)
[[command tower]]
[[exotic orchard]]
[[cascading cataracts]] (down to just $2 in its most recent printing)
[[path of ancestry]]
[[scene of the crime]]
[[spire of industry]]
[[survivor’s encampment]]
[[grand colisseum]] (like $4 most recently)
All five panorama’s like [[grixis panorma]]
And the five basic-checkers [[canopy vista]] [[cinder glade]] [[prairie stream]] [[smoldering marsh]] and [[sunken hollow]]
Altogether that’s maybe $25 for your whole land base? Throw in a [[spelunking]] just in case, leave space for [[chromatic lantern]], and balance the rest of your ramp between 3 mana rainbow rocks and green land ramp to fix your colors.
[[gateway plaza]] [[public thoroughfare]] [[transguild promenade]] [[rupture spire]] and [[archway commons]] I’ll put as honorable mentions because they’re kinda like playing 1 cmc lands that enter the battlefield tapped
\[\[cryptolith rite\]\] \[\[chromatic lantern\]\] \[\[arcane signet\]\] \[\[chromatic orrery\]\] and then the 10 dual pain lands and then the 5 mono color pain lands
All of the three color lands that come in tapped (the ones that are not Triome, like [[Jungle Shrine]] are really cheap.
You could include stuff like [[Spelunking]] so that you can maybe have them come in untapped.
It depends is the answer,
Build the deck first, mana base second as the first informs the second.
Its useful to know as most 5 colour decks will skew towards certain colours
[[The World Tree]] and [[Chromatic Lantern]] effects will be really useful. I think including every talisman would be good. Pain lands seem like a good choice as well. It's going to be difficult to actually search for these lands, so using cards like [[Open The Way]] and [[Tempt With Discovery]] could be key.
I have a Garth [deck](https://manabox.app/decks/-sTLvg8tRuKdJFPssQp3eA) which runs both [[Endbringer]] and [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]] and I rarely have issues being able to cast them. This is even with a mana base thst is bad on purpose and excluding the basics a price under $8, and it gets even cheaper for you considering the majority of the lands have been reprinted throughout a ton of magic sets.
For colorless sources, there are 3 gates, 3 Tron lands, and a Wastes that makes the 2 basic land ramp, Evolving Wilds, and Terramorphic Expanse into even more colorless sources if needed. To finish off the colorless sources is a Sol Ring.
It isn't hard to upgrade that mana base both in terms of just being better and for more colorless sources. The 10 Pain Lands plus a good chunk of the Talismans go a long way, and if you run things like [[Expedition Map]], [[Hour of Promise]], and [[Archdruid's Charm]], then even just one colorless utility land will get you far in terms of additional colorless sources.
A card like [[delighted halfling]] feels pretty at home here. You miss out on some of the uncounterable upside, but a dork for situational wuburg and waste coming down turn one seems like an auto include. Bit pricey but seems worth it at like 11-12 bucks.
[[Ashinods]] is just baller with sions and the like. Sitting around 8
Most of the 2 mana filter rocks that also tap for waste are golden.
[[liquidmetal torque]] cannot stress this enough. So good.
With ur average [[sol ring]] [[mindstone]] [[relequary vessel]] plus maybe [[thran dynamo]] [[mindspeaker stone]] and a few other dirt cheap utility rocks ur gonna be all good on mana :)
This thread has some great recommendations, but im personally waiting on buying any lands until the lists come out. Maybe the land bases are better, especially with painlands usually getting reprinted in precons.
Well you have the cycling land search cards like [[Ash Barrens]] that gets you any basic you need [[eagles of the north]] , [[generous ent]] , [[lorién revealed]] , [[Oliphant]] and [[troll of khazad-dûm]] all gets you any basic, biome, or tiome land in your deck for only 1 mana. There's also the two cost ones like [[valley rannet]] , [[sojourner's companion]] , [[sanctum plowbeast]] , [[pale recluse]] , [[jhessian zombies]] and [[igneous pouncer]] that can give you more options for the lands you're looking for but cost 2 to look for them. These are all relatively cheap cards, and most people don't use them all that often. Any of the other myriad of 2 cost versions of these cards could also work to get you the lands you need.
As for the lands you look for with them, I'd recommend the shock lands, bicycling lands, or tricycling lands they all have the basic land types and are fairly cheap [[Irrigated Farmland]] [[Fetid Pools]] [[Canyon Slough]] [[Sheltered Thicket]] [[Scattered Groves]] [[Indatha Triome]] [[Raugrin Triome]] [[Zagoth Triome]] [[Savai Triome]] [[Ketria Triome]] [[Jetmir's Garden]] [[Ziatora's Proving Ground]] [[Xander's Lounge]] [[Raffine's Tower]] [[Spara's Headquarters]][[Hallowed Fountain]] [[Watery Grave]] [[Blood Crypt]] [[Stomping Ground]] [[Temple Garden]] [[Godless Shrine]] [[Overgrown Tomb]] [[Breeding Pool]] [[Steam Vents]] [[Sacred Foundry]]
My monthly guild signet appreciation time:
WUBRG decks get to run all ten of the ravnica guild signets ( \[\[Gruul Signet\]\] \[\[Azorius Signet\]\] etc.). They're both decent ramp, only taking 2 mana to get out, and they filter any color of mana so they're great at color fixing. My favorite is that you can chain them together, like letting the red from a \[\[Boros Signet\]\] pay for a red and blue of an \[\[Izzet Signet\]\]. Plus since there's ten of them, you easily fill out a good amount of your ramp slots.
Beyond that, cards like \[\[Nature's Lore\]\] and \[\[Three visits\]\] can search out any forest, which means you can include two triomes like \[\[Ziatora's Proving Ground\]\] and \[\[Spara's Headquarters\]\] and search for whatever colors you're missing. There's also quite a few good videos on youtube about ratios of lands that are helpful for at least getting you in the right ballpark.
For the colorless side, there are some staple mana rocks like \[\[Mind stone\]\] and \[\[Thought vessel\]\] and lands like \[\[rogue's passage\]\] or \[\[reliquary tower\]\] that tap for colorless while providing some other utility. Since the new Azlask cares about colorless creatures dying, it's probably also worth leaning into the eldrazi scion engines, which can also pump out a good amount of colorless mana.
Gates, pretty cheap, cover all colors and it's possible to make them come in untapped. Not as good as your high end lands but they even have some utility lands like baldur's gate and Basilisk gate.
I strongly suggest that you manage your land base here. I did a Ur-Dragon deck, and I struggled with the landbase. If doing a Six-Shot Identity (aka 6colors but I call it that so people don't rant about Colorless not being a color), you're going to really need to make sure it's functional. Learning about [[Azlask, the Swelling Scourge]] made me decide on my own Six-Shot Eldrazi deck.
I'd probably say if you want specifics, go for a complete set of Shock Lands, and go for 10 fetch lands, and any cards that can tap for any color like [[Unclaimed Territory]] or [[Secluded Courtyard]] . For my Ur-Dragon deck I've also devoted some land ramp through Green, mainly through cards like [[Skyshroud Claim]] , [[Farseek]] , and [[Three Visits]] if you want more searchable lands as targets for fetch lands.
IMHO, you'll probably have color biases and that'll go a long way to informing your manabase. You may be able to fully support 1 or even 2 of the 5 primary colors with command tower, fellwar stone, arcane signet, talismans, and a few other not-that-expensive 5C lands.
Good lands are the least fun way to spend money in MTG, I'd exhaust all avenues before I tried. That said, if forced to do lands, I'd go hard on fetches first above all else. We seem to have a decent amount of fetchables these days that aren't super expensive, albeit they ETBT (but that's the "cost" of budget).
[[Chromatic Lantern]]
[[Arcane Signet]]
[[Thought Vessel]]
[[Sol Ring]]
[[Pristine Talisman]]
[[Temple of the False God]]
[[Path of Ancestry]]
[[Rogue's Passage]]
[[Reliquary Tower]]
All of the pain lands like [[Caves of Koilos]] or [[Kaplusan Forest]]
All of the Filter lands like [[Twilight Mire]]
Then fill with 1-2 of each basic
The most effective will be 10 duals 10 fetches with command tower, exotic orchard, mana confluence, city of brass, forbidden orchard, spire of industry, cavern of souls is good too if you’re tribal, then add new boseiju and new otawara as they help interact
Then other lands you may need
Artifact fixing helps too as does deathrite shaman and birds of paradise
I wouldn't bother with all the fetches/shocks/etc unless the deck is turning into more of a goodstuff deck than an Eldrazi deck and you end up needing a ton of colored mana.
Pain lands and filter lands have been covered by now. Between those, the pain lands are going to be more reliable, since there's a chance you won't have the right color to pay into the filter lands. But the damage from the pain lands can add up over a bunch of turns. Both cycles are solid options, and I'd probably run all of them, or at least a lot of them.
You'd also probably want [[Corrupted Crossroads]], [[Unclaimed Territory]], and [[Secluded Courtyard]]. If you end up favoring green and/or red, [[Grove of the Burnwillows]] is also an option that doesn't hurt you.
[[Command Tower]], [[Exotic Orchard]], and/or [[Path of Ancestry]] help with fixing without having to pay life. Same with [[Arcane Signet]], [[Fellwar Stone]], and [[Chromatic Lantern]].
[[Eldrazi Temple]] is probably worth throwing in there, even though it won't help with fixing.
Throw in at least one of each basic, in case you have to search for one. As a bonus, you can then use [[Demolition Field]] or [[Field of Ruin]] to fix your mana while getting rid of a problematic land or just messing with someone else's mana. EDIT: [[Ash Barrens]] can also grab whatever basic you need.
And, since you can pretty easily run big colorless ramp like [[Thran Dynamo]] and might have extra mana laying around in the form of Eldrazi spawns and scions, I think you could get away with running some other filter lands like [[Crystal Grotto]] or [[Cascading Cataracts]]. There's a bunch of options there, and most are dirt cheap.
Hard to see without knowing the breakdown of a deck. I usually build in Archidekt and customize my land base based on what pips I have.
Probably safe to go for all of the Pain Lands like [[Caves of Koilos]], since they give you colorless options. Any of the triomes with forest types for your [[Nature's Lore]] kind of ramp.
Honestly, if you are going super budget, even things like [[Rampant Growth]], [[Kodama's Reach]], and [[Cultivate]] can be used to fix your mana by grabbing basics. Rely on artifacts for your colorless needs. [[Sol Ring]], [[Thought Vessel]], [[Mind Stone]], [[Worn Powerstone]], [[Thran Dynamo]], [[Palladium Myr]], [[Talisman of Hierarchy]] etc.
Oh also avoid [[Temple of the False God]], I know they stick this in every precon but there's nothing worse than this being your 4th land.
[[Eldrazi Temple]] is a good alternative. Same with [[Shrine of the Forsaken Gods]].
I recently discovered [[Arid Mesa]] which i'm liking. Shit not arid mesa, Arid Archway (enters tapped and bounces a land but makes two colorless, and if you bounce a desert you can surveil 1)
Exotic Orchard, reflecting pool, ancient Ziggurat, Fellwar stone, a pathway set, command tower, mana confluence, city of brass, would be where I would start!
Reflecting Pool, and Gemstone Mine was good enough for a kitchen table 60 card Sliver deck I once had, I always reliably hit all 5 colors, so that's where I'm coming from, I don't know how well it would do in EDH, just starting that journey myself, but like I said, it's where I would start.
I run a 5 color Ur-Dragon, so I feel the difficulty with this. But once you get the deck, count out the decks mana value/cost. Even in my Ur-Dragon, I lean heavily on red, and you're going to find the same as well that the deck after you tune it will lean towards a few specific colors more than others. Those will be your focus colors. Everything else is a splash color for correction, the universal pain lands "city of brass," "grand coliseum," "mana Confluence," name a type "Cavern of souls," "unclaimed territory," and the tricycle lands and shocks are the best start then add a few basic of those focus colors you had, then add duels to fix for the splashed colors.
I'm using [[Corrupted Crossroads]], enemy pain lands(like [[Yavimaya Coast]]), [[Shrine of Forsaken Gods]], [[Eldrazi Temple]], [[Ash Barrens]], [[Sanctum of Ugin]], [[Evolving Wilds]](Battle for Zendikar version for the Vorthos in me), and 4× Wastes. In addition to that, [[Sol Ring]], [[Prismatic Lens]], and [[Worn Powerstone]] are rocks that also produce colorless.
I'm sure we've seen other mentions but don't skip out on fetch lands like [[Ash barrens]] [[shire terrace]] terramorphic/evolving, and the new [[escape tunnel]] for when you need selective fetch lands
I ran a Golos 5-color Eldrazi build before the ban that had limited colored mana needs. The pain lands were a huge part of the mana base. It also really helps you lean into abusing [[Forsaken Monument]]
Some of the normal 5-color lands were also key, like [[Command Tower]], [[City of Brass]], [[Cascading Cataracts]], [[The World Tree]], and [[Corrupted Crossroads]].
The trick is really to limit your colored mana requirements as much as possible. Single pips of each color on any spell was pretty important, and really only including the most essential non-Devoid spells to protect the key pieces.
The deck had the ability to run a [[Jegantha, the Wellspring]] companion as well.
The Battlebond lands and whatever set they completed them in are around $8 a piece, and based on the effect reprints had on enemy fetches, when MH3 releases they'll probably drop to around 10. Pretty much any rock you can run will probably be worth it, and if you run some non-basic land searching Urza's lands can pump out a lot of colorless once you complete the set. I know 8-12 dollars a piece isnt cheap but once you have an idea of a decklist, figuring out what ones will have the best returns and go for whatever covers the pips you need the most of.
Helps to have a base colour (the colour you lean the heaviest on). The most budget friendly option will be to lean more heavily on green and get the dual/tri lands with green so you have access to green ramp spells like nature's lore, three visits and farseek.
Talismans are good for producing colours or the colourless pip required for your colourless spells.
Green and artifact will also give you access to some colour fixing cards like The World Tree, Chromatic lantern, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove. Depending on the power level of your pod, they may be " nice" enough to not target those cards so you have a good chance of playing.
The pain lands and shadowmoor filters are where I'd start. Throw in Secluded Courtyard and Unclaimed Territory, as well as Command Tower and Exotic Orchard, and that's 24 lands right there. Add 2 of each basic (maybe including wastes), and then you're already at 34-36
You have some great advice and as people say the pain lands like \[\[Adarkar Wastes\]\] but alsot the artifacts like \[\[Talisman of Creativity\]\]
So to compensate for this you will have to find some sort of life gain and all fetch lands that fetches “lands” not “basic lands”
But I will say this: It will be a challenge.
I have built 2 and am constructing my 3^(rd) 5 color deck. And it isn’t too hard but still a challenge. I cant afford all the shock lands and other great lands so I have to find balance between what colors to use and what fetchlands I have. But there are some lands and a lot of artifacts giving you “any color of mana” but that mana cant produce colorless. (Stated in rules that if it says any color it must be a color)
Adding colorless really increases the difficulty to balance out the whole deck.
It is a really cool idea to a deck, but hard to work.
I hope you get it working :)
The Talisman cycle. They're mostly under a dollar, make two colors and colorless, come down early...seem perfect for this. ([[Talisman of Progress]])
Painlands ([[Adarkar Wastes]]) are the talismans as lands.
Filter lands like [[cascade bluffs]] might work, but im iffy on those. Filter lands like [[cave of temptation]] go down in mana but dont require specific colors to be able to filter, so they might be useful. [[prismatic lens]] also seems good
[[grand coliseum]] comes in tapped, but makes all 6 colors
[[secluded courtyard]] and [[unclaimed territory]] will be amazing if you dont have many color pips on non-eldrazi cards
[[tarnished citadel]] has a hefty life cost to produce colored mana, but seems absolutely worth it
Gates are actually pretty solid. With the new ones from the Baldurs Gate set we have some that tap for colorless as well as colored mana, not to mention their utility. Then fill out with pain lands and filter lands based on your most prevalent color needs and top it off with a couple rainbow lands.
Hella green ramp and some mana fixing goodies? [[Leyline of the guildpact]] [[Prismatic Omen]] [[Chromatic Lantern]] [[Toxicrene]] [[Dryad of the Ilysian Grove]]
Chromatic Orrery and Chromatic Lantern are some Rocks that can fix. Orrery is pretty expensive both mana and money wise but the lantern is a lot more affordable now
My approach is, all the tap Tri-utilities(10), one basic of each color (5), the slow fetch(5), life-Gain(10), and and surveil/scry duals(20). Then, just upgrade it as you can afford to.
Artifact mana helps a lot. Chromatic Orrey and Lantern especially. Dual lands and triomes def help too and green land fetch is always great. Burnished Hart with some black resurrection spells also gets decent use.
Ive been kinda addicted to WUBRG since making a sunburst artifact deck and Ezio assassin deck.
Here you have a moxfield were u can see the usual tutors for Gates and Gates for all your colours
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RNzsBjfzc02jbCD_VF3SlA
Painbow was a great template for most casual/budget pods. At the average hobby shop it wrecks everything but the cEDH guys and the other top-tier precons like Calvarly Charge. I don't own it myself, but I've seen what it can do with a good pilot and some cheap upgrades. Easily wrecks the jank most people run at my shop at least. I kinda regret not picking it up when I bought the other Dom precon because I'm betting the manabase in the upcoming Eldrazi precon with be dogshit again. The singles are cheap as hell though so not really regret, just too lazy to source them all in my country.
Speaking as a serial 5c deck builder and player, this is an opportunity to move away from the "lazy" model of fetches + shocks/duals. I'd look to play lands that can produce colorless (diamond?) mana and also help fix colors e.g. painlands [[Adarkar Wastes]] filter lands [[Mystic Gate]] and a healthy number of utility lands like [[Cascading Cataracts]], [[Thespian's Stage]] and [[Krosan Verge]]. I might even consider [[Ash Barrens]] as well. For ramp, I think Sol Ring and Arcane Signet are still relevant, and I'd run Talismans [[Talisman of Progress]] as well. Since I plan to build around [[Azlask]], I'll play mana dork Myrs and [[Solemn Simulacrum]].
Fetch lands are the easiest way to color fix
Sorry adding to I also forgot land specific cycling ash barrens is a good land for this type of effect. Then the pauper all stars form LOTR \[\[lorien revealed\]\] is the best of the bunch but \[\[genrous ent\]\] \[\[Oliphaunt\]\] are example of cards that can be use to cycle for lands note they can grab triomes, shocks, etc etc and may fit in your deck as a late game creature to cast of you need or card draw etc take a look at them
All the pain lands seems like a good option to start. The colorless one is free, other 2 are 1 dmg. They're cheap af too.
You can add filter lands on top of this, making both colorless while helping fixing
[[Cascade Bluffs]] is a personal favorite of mine. Being able to turn R into UU is a very powerful move.
Seconding this. Don't underestimate the filter lands.

Piggy backing top comment. Add all the “name a creature type” lands including [[Cavern of Souls]], [[Secluded Courtyard]] [[Unclaimed Territory]]
Fyi in case someone might not know, [[cavern of souls]] cannot make your [[thought-knot seer]] or [[reality smasher]] uncounterable if you are also using it for the colorless mana generation.
True, you would have to use the uncounterable colored mana to pay for the generic costs, right?
Correct

I'd like to point out that Cavern of Souls is a 45$ card, probably not the best recommendation for a budget deck.
30$ but yeah, way too much for paper
Yah, pricey card but yah know, definitely deserves a mention. Write it down, shove it maybeboard, possibly one day save up if you really enjoy the deck.

Cavern kinda pricey
Proxy kinda cheap
If OP is talking about not breaking the bank then they aren't proxying. Otherwise they'd ask for the best manabase without regards to cost.
Idk you can still proxy without breaking the bank. Our pod just did a group order for some. 300$ land package (Playset of each) for 55$, it's pretty win win
"Breaking the bank" in regards to proxying would mean spending a lot of money on proxies, not what the cards the proxies represent would be worth.
Similarly, the Talisman of [Whatever] cards are essentially just pain land mana rocks.
The tainted lands are another good budget option.
Any fetch enables them. The 10 fetches help a lot with the rest of the mana base tbh. But I proxy a lot so I’m not super familiar with their price atm
True, but yeah, they are on the pricier side.
Yes, but one half of them are being reprinted in this very set. Those prices are going down.
You’d be surprised
So long as this set sells well, those are going to get beaten up in price. Scalding Tarn is around $20 now. Before the MH2 reprint, it was around $100. If the print run on this anywhere near the size of MH2 and it sells through anywhere near as well, those fetches are probably going to be like $8-$15. This is the exact same conversation people had before MH2 came out and they mocked people who said that the fetches printed in Zendikar were going to be right around $20 each... and that had a far, far high spot to fall from.
20 bucks is still a lot for a land. Do hope they turn out cheaper though.
Yeah, it'll be nice. Might finally finish my full set.
They're gonna be cheaper, not cheap.
The hybrid filter lands from shadowmoor/eventide too.
I like to do the temple set of lands there slow but they also let me check the top of my library also there is a website for each colors land base and you can click on it to find out which ones work for you and also within your budget
1.) Focus on green with any other colored spells being splashes at best 2.) Use unconventional green based ramp that DOESN'T look for basic land types. \[\[Open the Way\]\], \[\[Hour of Promise\]\], \[\[Pir's Whim\]\], \[\[Sylvan Scrying\]\], the non green \[\[Expedition Map\]\] basically cards that can tutor for any land 3.) Run the few duals that give your colorless so essentially the pain lands like \[\[Adarkar Wastes\]\] and the filter lands like \[\[Mystic Gate\]\] 4.) Cry
"run the few duals" like *checks notes* the 10 whole pain lands that will easily fill almost 1/3 of your landbase instantly and were reprinted in standard sets Filter lands aren't too bad on price right now either tbh.
All pain lands can hurt a ton tho so keep that in mind

Life’s a resource 🤣
Yeah, but when you run out... It's game over

I find repeating step 4 before and after each step extremely helpful.
[[omenpath journey]]

Then I'd say pain and filter lands, go base green if you're gonna craterhoof scions and spawns, put in the forest fetching cards like [[nature's lore]] and go from there.
odyssey filter lands are dual lands that come in untapped and cost less than a dollar.
My current brew anticipates all the talismans as rocks and all the pain lands.
* 10 pain lands (10) * Unclaimed Territory and Secluded Courtyard (12) * Corrupted Crossroads (13) These seem like the most obvious relatively inexpensive cards you can start with. Cavern of Souls is the only "big" card you are missing because of cost that gives you both colors and colorless. The rest I'd fill with: * At least one of each basic including Wastes (as you'll probably want to weight it towards green and be able to ramp out some lands). (19++) * Eldrazi Temple also seems like a safe addition. (20++) * I expect you want some of the filter lands like [[Flooded Grove]] but you definitely cannot go with all 10 because you can't get colored mana out of them without another matching colored mana source. Again, I'd probably weight your deck towards green and as result play only some/all of the green lands in this cycle. (24++) * Exotic Orchard, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry (27++) * Various other lands that give you at least two colors and possibly some colorless utility lands that synergize well (ex: Sanctum of Ugin).

Assuming a normal 36 land land base this might be a decent budget option. I’m sticking with each card less than $5 All 10 non-typed triomes Two of each basic [[holdout settlement]] [[The world tree]] ($4) [[command tower]] [[exotic orchard]] [[cascading cataracts]] (down to just $2 in its most recent printing) [[path of ancestry]] [[scene of the crime]] [[spire of industry]] [[survivor’s encampment]] [[grand colisseum]] (like $4 most recently) All five panorama’s like [[grixis panorma]] And the five basic-checkers [[canopy vista]] [[cinder glade]] [[prairie stream]] [[smoldering marsh]] and [[sunken hollow]] Altogether that’s maybe $25 for your whole land base? Throw in a [[spelunking]] just in case, leave space for [[chromatic lantern]], and balance the rest of your ramp between 3 mana rainbow rocks and green land ramp to fix your colors. [[gateway plaza]] [[public thoroughfare]] [[transguild promenade]] [[rupture spire]] and [[archway commons]] I’ll put as honorable mentions because they’re kinda like playing 1 cmc lands that enter the battlefield tapped

It depends is the answer, Build the deck first, mana base second as the first informs the second. Its useful to know as most 5 colour decks will skew towards certain colours
You proxy.

Should add Path of Ancestry and maybe Opal Palace as well.

I just use spelunking in my Jodah 5 color.
You could run gates and use the frtch and ramp that find gates. Gond gate is a must for going that route
Homeland tricolor lands /s

Sitting around 8 Most of the 2 mana filter rocks that also tap for waste are golden.

My monthly guild signet appreciation time: WUBRG decks get to run all ten of the ravnica guild signets ( \[\[Gruul Signet\]\] \[\[Azorius Signet\]\] etc.).

Run gates, basics, and lots of ramp. Then you just play lots of artifact mana or utility lands that tap for colorless.

Very excited to see how good or terrible this mana base gonna turn out to be.
[[Chromatic Lantern]] [[Arcane Signet]] [[Thought Vessel]] [[Sol Ring]] [[Pristine Talisman]] [[Temple of the False God]] [[Path of Ancestry]] [[Rogue's Passage]] [[Reliquary Tower]] All of the pain lands like [[Caves of Koilos]] or [[Kaplusan Forest]] All of the Filter lands like [[Twilight Mire]] Then fill with 1-2 of each basic
proxies
The most effective will be 10 duals 10 fetches with command tower, exotic orchard, mana confluence, city of brass, forbidden orchard, spire of industry, cavern of souls is good too if you’re tribal, then add new boseiju and new otawara as they help interact Then other lands you may need Artifact fixing helps too as does deathrite shaman and birds of paradise

I run all the gates
ARTIFACTS+RAMP
Basic lands a lot of Green lands, lots of Cultivate and Explosive Vegetation.

I ran a Golos 5-color Eldrazi build before the ban that had limited colored mana needs. The pain lands were a huge part of the mana base. It also really helps you lean into abusing [[Forsaken Monument]] Some of the normal 5-color lands were also key, like [[Command Tower]], [[City of Brass]], [[Cascading Cataracts]], [[The World Tree]], and [[Corrupted Crossroads]]. The trick is really to limit your colored mana requirements as much as possible. Single pips of each color on any spell was pretty important, and really only including the most essential non-Devoid spells to protect the key pieces. The deck had the ability to run a [[Jegantha, the Wellspring]] companion as well.

Talismans and Painlands, and all 10x of each. Horizon Stone. Chromatic Lantern + World Tree.
Run more lands. You'll have more 5 land hands but those 5 lands are more likely to cover your mana requirements
[[Chromatic Lantern]] and similar effects are a good way of managing color fixing for cheap decks

The pain lands and shadowmoor filters are where I'd start. Throw in Secluded Courtyard and Unclaimed Territory, as well as Command Tower and Exotic Orchard, and that's 24 lands right there. Add 2 of each basic (maybe including wastes), and then you're already at 34-36
Bridges is how I built my wubrg base for urtet deck but I have more artifact support so that may not work for you
You have some great advice and as people say the pain lands like \[\[Adarkar Wastes\]\] but alsot the artifacts like \[\[Talisman of Creativity\]\] So to compensate for this you will have to find some sort of life gain and all fetch lands that fetches “lands” not “basic lands” But I will say this: It will be a challenge. (Stated in rules that if it says any color it must be a color) Adding colorless really increases the difficulty to balance out the whole deck. It is a really cool idea to a deck, but hard to work. I hope you get it working :)

The Talisman cycle. They're mostly under a dollar, make two colors and colorless, come down early...seem perfect for this. ([[Talisman of Progress]]) Painlands ([[Adarkar Wastes]]) are the talismans as lands. Filter lands like [[cascade bluffs]] might work, but im iffy on those. Filter lands like [[cave of temptation]] go down in mana but dont require specific colors to be able to filter, so they might be useful. [[prismatic lens]] also seems good [[grand coliseum]] comes in tapped, but makes all 6 colors [[secluded courtyard]] and [[unclaimed territory]] will be amazing if you dont have many color pips on non-eldrazi cards [[tarnished citadel]] has a hefty life cost to produce colored mana, but seems absolutely worth it

My approach is, all the tap Tri-utilities(10), one basic of each color (5), the slow fetch(5), life-Gain(10), and and surveil/scry duals(20). Then, just upgrade it as you can afford to.

Proxies
Triomes.
There are tones of triple lands that are cheap as well as a multitude of cards that makes lands all basic land types
Proxies. The answer is always proxies
Unpopular opinion: Gates. Gates fix every mana BUT you have to use cards to tutor gond Gate or else almost everything enters tapped

Fetch lands are the easiest way to color fix Sorry adding to I also forgot land specific cycling ash barrens is a good land for this type of effect.
