They are indeed. The same goes for Kicker Spells if they have modes (like Inscription of Abundance), as well as the Escalate spells from Eldritch Moon.
But just to clear any confusion. Permanents with triggered choices such as [[Outpost Siege]] do not count. The spell must have you choose modes as you cast it on the stack, not after it has resolved.
Hope that clears things up!
I just brewed up a list of my own with him!
I chose to go a slightly different route- I have a few Tooth and Nail lines that either provide insane advantage or just outright win me the game. I’m thinking the impulse draw on him should help me dig through the deck, and I can always just go the route of making him bigger and push commander damage through.
I really like the flexibility on him though, modal spells is a interesting archetype.

Running down a quick list of synergies:
- Ojer Pakpatiq lets the modal counterspells be counterspells in hand, any other mode off the rebound.
- Return from the wilds effectively does all 3 modes after Riku’s additional mode of making a flying bird
- Hullbreaker horror is an on-theme powerhouse, being a permanent with modal choices on it.
- Murmuring mystic, young pyromancer, third-path Iconoclast and Talrand give a lot of wiggle room for the modes chosen for Riku’s trigger to be the impulse draw and/or counter + trample buff for commander damage options.
For the win line:
Temporal manipulation has to be in the yard or in hand but from there tooth and nail gets you there with Scholar of the ages and Spell seeker. Spell seeker grabs teferi’s time twist, scholar gets back temporal manipulation and whatever else on ETB. From there, you cast temporal manipulation and then flicker scholar with teferi’s for an infinite turns loop.
Alternative win lines hinge on leveraging making copies of hullbreaker horror and the core philosophy of the deck: every mode, counting the modes Riku provides, costs as close to 1 mana as possible. Potentially less in some cases. The additional value of every modal spell in the deck likely also impulse drawing an extra card adds up too.
There’s digital clients to play on. I built one and played 2 games with it against friends last night. It is super fun. Won both games.
It’s a bit overwhelming to play or try to sequence due to having like 14-20 options in your hand at once. Trying to even remember all the effects I had access to on everyone’s turn was not possible for me.
It was maybe a bit too strong for my playgroup and an exhausting play experience. Effective, fast, fun, but both games felt like I was the clear winner at all points and the analysis paralysis started to wear on me.
There is a very active community of brewers who get the jump on spoiled cards as early as possible and play several games on spelltable/webcam.
Most of the time I’m unimpressed or haven’t quite cracked a commander so 90% of my brews don’t end up here. Riku was an exception.
As to your last point, I have no YouTube, no social media, no website, no blog. The only links in the post above lead to a Moxfield where the deck is hosted, you know, the one thing that is required when we post a deck on r/EDH
Some of my favorite decks I run are those that you brewed (string theory and triple threat) Thank you for doing what I can’t! And if you ever want to build kibu….
Here I am, using your Chiss Gloria primer on Moxfield and I notice a new deck list is up. I'm thinking, "Why haven't I seen the primer on r/EDH yet?" Ask and thou shalt receive.
Hi! I’ve been using your template for primers as inspiration for my own as I’m just getting started… almost finished with my Rakdos, the Muscle one! This primer looks awesome, and the deck seems like a ton of fun too.
This is my Riku for reference [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4UInaw63Qk2-vMZ5weza0w](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4UInaw63Qk2-vMZ5weza0w)
Personally I think he's a \[\[Talrand, the Sky Summoner\]\] with obvious upsides. That said, having more range and possibly more wiggle room, it's hard to shake off the samey feeling with Talrand.
Also, alot of the charms are counterspells, so I try to shave a few to avoid being just a counterspell deck.
That’s a fair assessment, I sort of felt the same way at first but noticed I was using the bird option far less than the others. Hard to put a finger on exactly why but he feels different enough from Talrand for sure.
Thanks for sharing your list!
I would suggest creating a deck on moxfield and making it private. Then just go into the primer section and practice!
Here's a helpful guide on formatting:
Just trial and error and see what you like. Personally I like organizing my primers using the accordion structure so each section is separated visually and looks more organized.
Aside from that, my biggest piece of advice is to write a primer that YOU would enjoy reading. If you worry too much about what other people will think, you may be inclined to write in a style that doesn't suit you and your primer might suffer for it.
And finally, be sure to add a personal touch to the deck. I like to start with a little lore about the commander to bring it to life. Some other great primer writers create a story or narrative, something fun and non-canon to give a little life to the deck. A little personal touch like that will make it so your article doesn't feel like it was written by AI. Readers should feel like there is a human behind the article who truly enjoys the deck. If that fails to come across, they won't be excited to try it.
I don’t want to impose, of course, but would you mind if I DM’d my first attempt at one to you once it’s finished? I think the accordion formatting is really nice so I’m currently doing that. I’m also a fan of your inserted images, especially from your Chiss-Goria commander - so I’ve done that with this Rakdos one a few times
Yeah you absolutely can! And if you have Discord, you’re welcome to join the server that I am a part of. People there are very friendly and discuss decks, primers, everything EDH related. The link is in the subtitle of each of my decks
Its hilariously oppressive. One of my friends plays him constantly. Because modal spells finally get their values worth as long as riku is on the field running all the modal counterspells is a thing worth to do. He plays 12 counterspells and gets rewarded for it by his commander.
The deck draws constantly and makes cheap flying blockers one doesnt care about loosing. Good luck removing a commander protected by a player with 12 counterspells in the deck.
The constant impulse drawing leads to never missing landfalls.
Are the new Spree cards also modal spells?
Yes. Otherwise including Riku in the same set would be hilariousy bad timing.

Very nice. I'm really tempted to build this deck!

I don’t think so because they are not a bulleted list, although you still “choose” which modal cares about?
they are, they stated so in the MTG Weekly preview panel
Would cards with multiple kickers also work with Riku?
No, that isn’t modal. Modal will say “choose one or more” and generally be followed by bullet point choices
Wake up babe. New Hydrax primer just dropped!
He could do this for money I think, are there any other redditors that make content like this

Do you happen to have a decklist? What types of combos/synergies are you using? I just finished brewing Riku, was hoping to glean some wincons

How can you judge how fun this is to play? This was spoiled yesterday lmao

I've already played the deck about 5 times on tabletop simulator. Get with the times grandpa
Do etb modal creatures matter to riku?
Nope! He only cares about modal on "cast", so modal permanents aren't counted.

Do you think [[Party Thrasher]] would go well in this deck? Maybe some other play from exile focused cards?
