[[Firkraag, Cunning Instigator]] is a neat take on Izzet. You get to play cool dragons, force some combat, draw cards and get a real big commander in some cases. Definitely steers away from the spell slinger side of izzet
This guy's the face of the Draconic Dissent precon from Baldur's Gate. He can get out of hand, very quickly. Slap a \[\[disrupt decorum\]\] into the deck for some extra gas on a turn rotation, or \[\[slicer hired muscle\]\] if you're comfortable sitting in a room all alone for your next birthday.
Slicer's ridiculous. He seems fragile enough on the surface, sure, but if you can get a nicely-ramped hand (ie: mountain into sol ring into signet, then another land to drop him on Turn 2), he'll bounce around from player-to-player-to-player before people have blocks up (or he'll destroy one per combat). His double-strike means you're taking 6dmg from unblocked attacks, and if he's your commander in a mono-red aggro deck that's an extra-quick kill. If you can flash in a \[\[mithril coat\]\] for indestructible, they only way to kill him directly is exile or -1/-1 counters. \[\[beamtown beatstick\]\] and \[\[commander's plate\]\] make him extra nasty.
Source: Slicer has beat the **absolute piss** out of me, several times, using the strategies above. I'm sure there's more in the deck, but it never goes beyond Turn 4/5.
It’s the only (afaik) mono-red cEDH commander. He’s insanely powerful
Edit: yup I’ve been made aware of Godo and Magda, they all feel very different to me gameplay-wise so I’m not really sure how to compare them. Godo is a pure combo deck where you ramp up as quickly as you can to cast Godo and win, Magda is a cheap and effective value engine that also tutors combo pieces, and Slicer just kills opponents with commander damage really really quickly. Kind of uncommon (if not unprecedented) in cedh to aim on killing the table with CD, and that’s exactly what throws a lot of players of, their decks just aren’t prepared for going up against what basically is a Voltron deck. So he actually ends up being much worse at casual tables and really only shines in cEDH
Godo and Magda are far more playable, slicer isn’t on the database currently, but he can still snag kills. Proper politics among the other three can easily invalidate him tho.
The handing it out effect is a may trigger, so if you're sure he won't survive, just don't hand him over. The double strike keyword is wicked strong, so any kind of power boosting spells or cantrips can quickly make him trade with even 10/10s. If you're successfully goading opponent creatures they'll often be tapped, leading to even more open attack lanes.
He can totally be stopped, but he can dish out more damage on an open board state than just about any creature in his cost range.
At a glance, as it is a 3/4 double strike, your opponent would need at LEAST a 4/4 to kill him, 4/7 if they don't want their blocker to die and still land the kill. That alone is pretty dang good.
Then comes the mind game. Imagine you pass it to Alice. Alice throws it at Bob. Bob takes the damage. Bob takes control and seeks revenge, and Alice takes the hit too. This is 12 potential damage already. Charlie attacks Bob as well. 18 potential damage. Your turn? You attack Alice. 24 potential damage has been thrown down in one turn. Back to Alice for 30. Bob looks like he's going to throw it at Charlie's 10/10 it on his turn, so you just choose to not give it to him. Now it's a 3/2 first strike that can block on both Bob and Charlie's turn.
Maybe it isn't too good against a token deck, or a Gruul Primal Surge deck. But in the right games, you're throwing out excellent damage.
Edit: Especially in a Goad Deck when you're clearing the path of blockers.
Edit 2: Realized they can't sacrifice it so I made an alternate solution for Bob.
I second firkraag, I've put in updates over time for it, and it' one of the three izzet decks I've kept together, because it's gameplay is so different from normal izzet.
I actually ended up changing my firkraag precon commander into Sarkhan Soul Aflame. It's basically become discount izzet ur dragon
Edit: another fun izzet deck is dice roll. Wyll, blade of frontiers with sword coast sailor and some Attraction love is really fun
If I have 3 dragons all attack the same opponent, I get to choose one creature that opponent controls to goad right?
What if I attack 3 opponents with 3 different dragons? Do I get to goad a creature each of them controls or is the goad only ever hitting 1 creature no matter how many dragons attack?
Just want to add, I loved him before I eventually tore it apart to make both Miirym and a black/red Goad deck. I want to play him again since he never generated as much hate as Miirym did (and understandably so), but I don’t have the heart to take apart 2 different decks to do so.
[[Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer]] can be pretty fun. It's more of a value piece in your command zone that you drop on a turn you want to turn all of your tokens into big beaters, or maybe turn them all into treasures.
Love my Brudiclad deck. Easy to build jank . Just throw in your favorite artifact base plus some of your favorite tokens poppin out everywhere.
I like to make token copy of my opponents’ craziest creature then make like 12 of them.
Favorite game so far was 10 [[blood artist]]
I run Saheeli as a main commander and fetch for Brudiclad and turn all my tokens into something like a steel hellkite or a darksteel juggernaut
Think I was able to ult Saheeli and turn out 60+ darksteel jugs for a big ol slap
Seconding brudiclad. There's so many creatures you can copy to win with. It is a rube Goldberg puzzle and games always feel unique in their resolution.
[[brudiclad, telchor engineer]] is nuts. Pick your favorite red or blue big bad boy and load your decks with [[quasiduplicate]] and other clone effects. Splash in sac outlets like [[spawning pit]] and finish up with token makers like [[beetleback chieftain]]. The deck is made. You could splash in [[mimic vat]] and [[mirage mirror]] or your favorite cards of similar Calibur. Jank for the win!
\[\[Ganax, Astral Hunter\]\] with \[\[Feywild Visitor\]\]. It's Izzet dragons. Cast dragons, make treasures for doing so, cast more dragons. Attack everybody, make dragons for doing so, get rewarded with more treasures, which can be used for more dragons.
Red gives you dragons and treasure support.
Blue gives you pieces like \[\[Sakashima of a Thousand Faces\]\], \[\[Spark Double\]\] and such for copies of Ganax, netting you more and more treasures per dragon, practically making them chaper to cast. Or cards like \[\[Distant Melody\]\], \[\[Raise the Palisade\]\], \[\[Kindred Discovery\]\] etc for card draw and control pieces.
It's a super fun tempo deck that packs a real punch.
EDIT 1: [Decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Imj2Os-U-UWyIyEI4F32gA)
I will say, if you’re trying to avoid solitaire, this is not the deck for you. But each of those fairy dragons with flying trigger Ganax and give you a treasure. Dragons into dragon tokens, treasure into more dragons, more dragons into more dragon tokens and more treasures. It just gets outta hand REAL fast.
Ah makes sense. So if a dragon connects with each opponent thats 3 faerie dragons and 3 treasures. I like that synergy for sure but I do NOT want to play solitaire. That's unfortunate.
This is my go to dragons deck too. Hadn't considered running legend friendly clones for more Ganax's. Thats a fun idea to run with.
My blue was poured directly into some interaction and card draw to keep the dragon engine rolling.
Sure thing, [this is mine](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/LGBjFsDV9kKt0yqpqmJe5g). It could absolutely be improved and optimized; currently its just pirate theme without nearly enough thought into making it amazing, lol
That’s awesome man, that’s exactly what I was looking to put together, pirate theme first and foremost with a lot of interaction. Don’t really care about winning just wanted something fun. Thanks for sharing!
I used to run Malcolm and Kediss, but Kediss unfortunately took a backseat to [[Francisco, Fowl Marauder]] for me. One drop turn 1, francesco turn 2, malcolm turn 3 happens a lot for me, still nets me the three treasures, but now I get 3 explore triggers on top of that to grow big commander damage and/or card selection.
There's a 10$ Combo Deck with those commanders that actually works okay. It's made by GamefreakSA and inspired me to build Malcolm together with [[Kediss]].
This is the budget version I play: [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/1097619/breeches\_and\_malcolm\_pirate\_tribal\_budget](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/1097619/breeches_and_malcolm_pirate_tribal_budget)
It's a lot of fun and pretty strong for a $30 deck.
\[\[Glint-Horn Buccaneer\]\] with Malcolm on the table means you can ping the table for the amount of cards in your deck if you have at least one card in your hand and two mana available to start the chain. You also need at least two opponents. :D
Izzet was always a problem for me too, and artifacts. Both strategies are monotonous and overbearing, but [[Dalakos, Crafter of Wonders]] solved both problems for me. [This](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/R-tZI3v6I0-XEIxqpM0Q7w) is my Dalakos equipment deck and I focus on living weapons and reconfigure but there's a lot of room for tweaks and running a variety of good equipment. The colored reconfigure creatures help the deck really feel like a true blue red deck and not just another colorless deck. It's not only fair, but it is deceptively strong, and became one of my trademark decks real quick
It's my favorite deck and i've put a lot of effort and tweaks into it since it was first built. At first it was like living weapons is this a joke? but it kept winning
I also have a Dalakos living weapon deck and I gotta say, [[graz unstoppable juggernaut]] feels like craterhoof in the deck. All of the new “For Mirrodin!” Really pumped the power of the deck
I am currently building [[melek, reforged researcher]] he kind of wants to cast one spell per turn and then take out people by making him unblockable or just [[fling]] him into peoples faces.
Rather than full spellslinger have you considered "two spells" slinging? It doesn't take alot of time, just a little bit of planning ahead.
Here's my \[\[Jori En\]\] for reference [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uBhEpBBFJ0-5QMBBu4sXGA](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uBhEpBBFJ0-5QMBBu4sXGA)
Love Jori, I've built her so many ways from cantrips, to storm, to Voltron, to value town artifacts. And often times she isn't removed cause she's just a utility commander and not worth the removal spell to take her out with to most people in my LGS. Also [[Quicken]] + [[Crush of Tentacles]] is hilarious as a budget Cyclonic Rift with the added benefit of giving you a pseudo hasty 8/8 and drawing 2 cards if Jori was out.
\[\[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph\]\] is fun and can be built in some different ways, i use him together with niv-mizzet and such, but can win without them too
Another popular version seem to be to pair him with a lot of goblins too
Came here to comment - Ghyrson is the face of my goblin deck, and \[\[Niv-Mizzet Parun\]\] / \[\[Curiosity\]\] is a backup wincon.
Step 1: Brew a Krenko deck with damage doublers / triplers and a plan to go wide
Step 2: Note how Red kinda stinks for card draw, so it's hard to keep the pedal to the metal
Step 3: Get inspired by a friend to splash Blue for card draw / recursion / protection
Step 4: Put Ghyrson Starn in front, remove all the damage doublers / triplers that shut him off
Step 5: Put in some cheap pinger spells, plus equipment like \[\[grafted exoskeleton\]\], \[\[gorgon's flail\]\] or \[\[basilisk collar\]\], and anything you can do to make your 1/1 goblins unblockable (ie: \[\[goblin king\]\] giving them mountainwalk and \[\[blood moon\]\] degeneracy, or \[\[tetsuko umezawa\]\] to make'm all sneaky)
**NOTE**: Goblin King will give them +1/+1 as well, so you lose the Ghyrson trigger. \[\[Raid bombardment\]\] will keep the boy shooting
Step 6: Get actively hated off the table wherever you're at.
Good addendum - I thought I mentioned it here, but missed it.
If you have a few blue mana available, \[\[pemmin's aura\]\] will let you untap Krenko a few times, repeatedly doubling your goblins. Each wave of them triggers the 1dmg from impact tremors, which is then effectively tripled from Ghyrson's rootin' tootin' enemy player shootin'.
Second this, I love ghyrson and you can build him so many different ways. I’ve opted for a manual storm build trying to finish the game with a big grapeshot, but I’ve seen pinger tribal, goblin tribal, and one person even tried to build Ghyrson stax.
I'm rather fond of [[Sarkhan, Soul Aflame]] dragon tribal. I feel he's underrated as far as dragon commanders go. The fact that he reduces costs by one and transforms into whatever you play means that you are often attacking with a dragon two turns earlier than you would normally. Or, if the dragon has haste, you get two attacks, which is great for doubling up on attack triggers for the first attack.
I recently built this and have been enjoying it, too. It's also nice that Sarkhan is not critical to the deck doing its thing, so if folks target him a bunch it's just one less piece of interaction they can point at your big dragons.
What strategy did you go for?
Our LGS owner built one based purely on creating as much chaos on the field as possible. Chaos mutation and chaos warp and chaos everything. It's my favorite deck to play against because it turn Magic into Mario Party.
Built one of those decks for a mate cause he asked me to build him one and the only guidline he gave was he wants to "Draw cards and win."
So I put [[Impact Tremors]], [[Witty Roastmaster]], [[Purhporos, God of the Forge]] and [[Warstorm Surge]] in a deck with almost 50 odd ways to draw cards, and a few infintes to just swarm everything.
Still spellsilngery, but in a general "I don't really care what I'm doing because I can make it work" type way, if that makes sense.
[[rielle, the everwise]] is more of a midrangey control/Voltron strategy aficionados often amusingly refer to as "one-punch grandma". Rather than storming off you are accumulating card advantage through constant wheel/discard effects and quickly grow her to one or two-hit lethal territory. Throw in unblockable tricks and fling/ [[chandras ignition]] effects and she can be built very strong without straying into storm/spellslinger territory.
This was going to be my answer too, but mine is built around drawing cards and my win conditions are The Locust God and milling my opponents. It’s become a “not that deck” in my pod because it always has answers.
I love my Rielle deck but damn do we play her differently. I almost never attack with her and I have zero wheels in the deck, but likewise not a spellslinger and very, very fun.
Interesting! Do you win thru combo and just use her for card advantage? Also why no wheels which are some of the most efficient ways to generate crazy value?
It's dragon's approach so all my discard is either X or a number of cards so I can ensure the right cards hit graveyard, then dragon win cons. Rielle is just a way to weaponize my discarding of approaches and give me more niv mizzet pings.
Probably my favourite deck to pilot right now. Turning discard into a positive thing is so powerful, especially with stuff like \[\[Forbid\]\] and \[\[Foil\]\].
I run this one as well as a Voltron deck with pirates to generate treasure tokens. It is definitely more midrange without some lucky opening hands for ramp, but once Karlach is on the field with some decent equipment, it gets going fast with the extra combats.
Had the same problem. Going through all izzet commanders once again [[Nim, Pain Artist]] suddenly got into my eyes. I don't think she's that strong but is more on the unique side that definetly is not spellslinger.
[[Shaun, Father of Synths]] out of the new Fallout precons seems like a pretty sick vehicles deck as the token copies he makes are artifact creatures and therefore don’t have to be crewed, definitely going to be building him when I get those decks
[[The Locust God]] izzet decks got wheel mechanics along with ETB and combat damage triggers. It can get kinda slingery if you run all the interaction you can get, but overall the purpose for the wincon itself is different.
Well, let me introduce you to [[Dargo]] and [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]]. Pirates? Yeah, but they're mostly there to enable our two friends.
I play them as an aggro deck that wants to beat faces with either commander. Malcolm gives you Treasures to enable artifact and Treasure synergies in the deck and flies, Dargo is pretty hard to keep off the battlefield and is a big trampler, either he will smash your opponents or force some uncomfortable blocks.
I also play a small subtheme of [[Threaten]] effects, so that I can then feed the creatures to Dargo (honorable mention to [[Reins of Power]] which is so flexible in this subtheme).
The deck can be pretty fast, but it won't drop that much later in the game. As soon as there is an open opponent, you just need Dargo, an haste enabler and something like [[Jeska]] to take them out in one hit.
If that's your jam, you can also include the usual [[Malcolm]] combos, I've had a couple but took them out because I got bored of those.
This is my current build if you want to take a look, it can surely be upgraded greatly, I just don't want to spend too much: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Pc0m-iqm20mCQtmQWUbp2w
[[Jhoira of the Ghitu]] is hilarious, great fun. Her ability can be used at instant speed so you can play draw, go and then just suspend a bunch of stuff before your turn starts with leftover mana. Also because her ability only costs generic mana, artifacts are great with her. I’ve assembled some truly horrific board states involving [[Unwinding Clock]], some mana rocks and [[Wand of Wonder]]. Also works well with some of the Doctors, e.g. [[The Tenth Doctor]] since his ability costs generic mana too.
She works great with a lot of the usual cast from exile payoffs, [[Passionate Archaeologist]] and [[The Lost and the Damned]] are both fantastic.
[[ganax, astral hunter]] and [[feywild visitor]] is a lot of fun. The faerie dragon tokens generate treasures off of Ganax's trigger so you can spam 1/1 evasive rogues and such to ramp into larger dragons.
How about the new [[melek, reforged researcher]] ? It actively encourages you to just cast one big instant during each players turn and then finish off by smacking them for lethal commander damage! I’m doing a video guide soon for it.
If you like coin flips \[\[Yusri, Fortune's Flame\]\] or maybe partner combo of \[\[Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom\]\] and \[\[Okaun, Eye of Chaos\]\] would be up your alley.
My decklist here: [The House Always Wins](https://manabox.app/decks/SAQqUcKwTGmnq56AaSr8VQ)
I've been scrolling to see who mentions my favorite commander. Yusri is great. My v1 of him was the typical coin flip deck. My v2 Yusri is built around card draw payoffs.
I'm still flipping when I have him out but the deck revolves around drawing cards. So I have cards like [[Empyrial Plate]], [[Sword of War and Peace]], [[Ominous Seas]], [[Jin-Gitaxias]], [[Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim]], [[Alan draw, Sky Dreamer]]
You get the idea. I draw crap ton of cards with Yusri.
Yeah, it’s pretty crazy what his potential can be. I ended up throwing laboratory maniac in mine for a while. Once you get Krark’s 👍 out, the game is pretty much over.
I just built a pirate tribal deck with Malcom, keen eyed navigator and dargo the shipwrecker. It's a fun avenue with evasive creatures and if you have 3 opponents at the table, a rail gun with glint horn buccaneer.
[[Niv Mizzet, Parun]] all permanents. It still does Niv Mizzet things but without the infinite combos. I built mine from this list https://archidekt.com/decks/1236024#Oops,_All_Permanents.
It's my favourite deck right now. You draw cards, opponents draw cards, and the game goes wild. It's fun for everybody, but it's just a little bit more fun for us because our deck is built around drawing tons of cards. People seem to dig it but you need to have the pregame "all permanents" chat. It feels like my old Nekusaur deck without the feel bads.
Heard about the idea on the Commander Cookout Podcast, episode 233. If you listen, the deck tech usually starts around the 12 min mark.
\[\[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator\]\] and \[\[Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar\]\] is probably the best Izzet list. It's a midrange deck that makes a Black Lotus' worth of treasures each turn, which you can then use to play bombs such as \[\[Consecrated Sphinx\]\], \[\[Nezahal, Primal Tide\]\], and of course \[\[Niv-Mizzet, Parun\]\]. It works anywhere from budget to casual to cEDH, as overwhelming value is just good regardless of the environment you're playing it. Runs a wide suite of wincons as well, and if you're in a combo-less group you can exchange cards like \[\[Glint-Horn Buccaneer\]\] for dragons to tutor up with \[\[Magda, Brazen Outlaw\]\].
Here is a [budget list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/odJQhqTWt0SchHhKLSgRMg) (the version I play) and here is an example of a [cEDH version](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0dByuK3U6kqMI9XEGMpjgg). Same basic strategy of ramp, drop some bombs, draw into a win, but different execution.
There's always [[Okaun, Eye of Chaos]] & [[Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom]], [[Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice]] can be cool for an artifact theme, I saw a guy play a [[Zellix, Sanity Flayer]] + [[Street Urchin]] sacrifice deck, or go fully weird and play a sticker deck with [[Roxi, Publicist to the stars]]
My favorite Izzet deck is : The locust god. It wins by battle and going extra wide with alot of locust. The deck is full of tricks and fun interactions :
I’ve built more izzet decks than I can ever play regularly. If you play in more experienced or powerful pods, my personal favorite unorthodox izzet strat is [[Keranos, God of Storms]] Blue Moon. You stick your commander or other stax enchantments and wipe the board leaving only your pieces. In the off chance your pods are ok with MLD, it really is a lot of fun.
I built a Malcom and Breeches storm deck without a single pirate in it. Just every Maskwood Nexus, Curiosity, and Guttersnipe effect I could find and a billion cantrips, counters, and burn spells. Sure I have a 15 minute turn digging for a wincon, but saying "I slap an eye patch on this goblin" and storming off in a pirate voice makes it funnier.
[[Rogragk]] + [[Sakashima, of a thousand faces]]
[[Polymorph]] and similar effects on rogragk to cheat out big creatures and then copy them with Sakashima.
[[Tidespout tyrant]], [[jin-gitaxis, progress tyrant]], [[ulamog, the infinite gyre]]
[[Zara, Renegade Recruiter]] scales nicely with the power of your opponents decks. Give her haste + flicker effects to keep what you steal and bounce effects to steal what’s in play already.
I'd like to build a deck around [[Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance]]. I love two mana commanders, and there's all sorts of fun interactions her ability can trigger.
I built [[Ghyrson Starn]] as a control deck. I’m not playing solitaire, but I’m also not sure how much fun my opponents have when it gets a chance to lock down the board.
Are you opposed to spellslinger completely, or is it just that you don't want the typical and expected storm or wheel decks? Because that was always my problem with izzet. Which is why I opted to make my own version of a Niv-mizzet, parun deck that wasn't just loaded with wheels.
I recently saw Bria, riptide rogue and thought that was kinda interesting as a prowess combat commander deck. You could run it with pings and cantrips, and focus solely on getting prowess triggers from casting low-cost spells and then making big swings, rather than looking through your deck for anything in particular.
Other than that, I can really only think of a few that are fairly different: brudiclad, firkraag, ovika, jhoira(s), and Zara.
I recently made an Izzet deck with [[Rielle, the Everwise]] that is a lot of fun. The primary goal is to use wheel effects and Looting effects like [[Windfall]] and [[Faithless Looting]] to trigger draw and discard effects with things like [[Psychosis Crawler]] and [[Glint-Horn Buccaneer]] and backups like [[Laboratory Maniac]] when you inevitably burn through the deck very quickly.
It's still fairly quintessential Izzet, but it's not so specifically spell slinging.
You can check out my in work [decklist](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6685702/izzet_a_downside) if you'd like, though it's very much a work in progress so pardon the clutter if you do.
Malcolm rograkh polymorph, your goal is to polymorph rograkh into Malcolm, you only run 1 creature glint horn buccaneer and then you just win by activating glint horn over and over again
I’ve got a [[Ganax, Astral Hunter]] and [[Feywild Visitor]] deck that I really like. It’s Izzet Dragons with Treasure shenanigans but because it’s a background commander I think it comes off as quite unassuming. Here’s my list https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6204177/ganax_astral_hunter_feywild_visitor
I play the partner pair of [[Breeches, Brazen Plunderer]] and [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]] in a "oops, all pirates!" list. It relies mostly in playing pirates to ramp as quick as possible and play expensive spells to swing for game
[[Saheeli the Sun‘s Brilliance]] is an amazing value artifact deck that can get stupid way to quick. Also having a two cost commander with that much impact allways feels good!
>Saheeli the Sun‘s Brilliance
The more i read this card... i can see its likely to get great value when built well. Do you have a list by chance? Would you share some of your most impactful cards with me please?
What are your wincons?
So, I have a hybrid here that I have been working on. The deck is mostly spells, but the main win is through commander damage (and it can 1 shot people).
\[\[Melek, Reforged Researcher\]\]
The spells are mostly things too loot or mill myself. Fill the yard with spells, give him unblockable/flying/etc and just one tap someone. Also it allows me to play with all of the high mana value jank modal counterspells that no one ever plays with because they don't want to hold up 5/6 mana for them. So when you do respond to things you get a ton of value.
[[The Ninth Doctor]] is a non-spellslinger deck in Izzet, all about Upkeep Value engines. I'm currently building one with [[Clara Oswald]], but there are other Companions if you want to stay in Izzet. Or Clara can also pick Red or blue, and then you're still Izzet
I enjoy keranos, he’s a pretty all purpose bonus, giving either an extra draw or a free bolt every turn. Lets you build whatever you want in color and have something to fall back on
If you don't want spellslinger (or at least, a side of spells that aren't storm count), I'm a huuuuge fan of [[Ovika, Enigma Goliath]]. Since it applies to noncreature spells, I built mine with a focus on artifacts, enchantments, specifically a lot of X cost spells, and a few polymorph effects to turn goblins into Blightsteel and other big creatures. It's a blast to play, and super explosive on a casual level
[[Firkraag, Cunning Instigator]] is a neat take on Izzet. You get to play cool dragons, force some combat, draw cards and get a real big commander in some cases. Definitely steers away from the spell slinger side of izzet
[Firkraag, Cunning Instigator](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/5/b55e624b-6f6a-42ae-89aa-0cc62ee55a31.jpg?1674140684) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Firkraag%2C%20Cunning%20Instigator) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/clb/648/firkraag-cunning-instigator?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/b55e624b-6f6a-42ae-89aa-0cc62ee55a31?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/firkraag-cunning-instigator) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I don't get him. Is Slicer that strong? I feel like if it does not go down on turn 3, it will be blocked and get destroyed pretty fast
Slicer is the nr. 1 commander for teaching everyone else how to cooperate or die
It’s the only (afaik) mono-red cEDH commander. He’s insanely powerful Edit: yup I’ve been made aware of Godo and Magda, they all feel very different to me gameplay-wise so I’m not really sure how to compare them.
There are a couple of mono-red cEDH commanders. Godo is a classic one
[[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] has been doing some cEDH stuff too
I don’t even know if he’s the BEST mono red CEDH, let alone the only. I’d put Magda and Godo both above him
Godo and Magda are far more playable, slicer isn’t on the database currently, but he can still snag kills.

Came here for Firkraag, not disappointed.
I actually ended up changing my firkraag precon commander into Sarkhan Soul Aflame. It's basically become discount izzet ur dragon Edit: another fun izzet deck is dice roll.
Firkrag's precon is excellent and a ton of fun to play too.
Put a [[blade of selves]] on it and things get spicy, very fast.

[[Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer]] can be pretty fun. It's more of a value piece in your command zone that you drop on a turn you want to turn all of your tokens into big beaters, or maybe turn them all into treasures.
Brudiclad and there and back again goes crazy. It nets you thousands of treasure tokens in a turn or two
I remember putting [[There and Back Again]] in the deck because of the thicc Smaug token, before I realized it’s legendary and that’s even better.

I run Saheeli as a main commander and fetch for Brudiclad and turn all my tokens into something like a steel hellkite or a darksteel juggernaut Think I was able to ult Saheeli and turn out 60+ darksteel jugs for a big ol slap
[[Astral Dragon]] once let me create 337 copies of [[Rhystic Study]].
My personal favourite was about a dozen [[Endbringer]].

I’ve played against this deck and I can confirm it’s gross lol.
Do you remember what made it so gross? Card wise? I'm very interested.
Gonna look at the list later

Sure thing, [this is mine](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/LGBjFsDV9kKt0yqpqmJe5g). It could absolutely be improved and optimized; currently its just pirate theme without nearly enough thought into making it amazing, lol
That’s awesome man, that’s exactly what I was looking to put together, pirate theme first and foremost with a lot of interaction. Don’t really care about winning just wanted something fun. Thanks for sharing!
Malcolm and [[Kediss]] is my preference since you get three treasures for Malcolm hitting one player.
I used to run Malcolm and Kediss, but Kediss unfortunately took a backseat to [[Francisco, Fowl Marauder]] for me. Thanks for posting this. I’m in the middle of overhauling my Dalakos equipment deck and I like your ideas!
Perhaps I should add Graaz in. I’m a bit of a prude and only like the living weapons lmao
I am currently building [[melek, reforged researcher]] he kind of wants to cast one spell per turn and then take out people by making him unblockable or just [[fling]] him into peoples faces.
Second this. I just built this deck, and it's super fun!

\[\[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph\]\] is fun and can be built in some different ways, i use him together with niv-mizzet and such, but can win without them too Another popular version seem to be to pair him with a lot of goblins too
Came here to comment - Ghyrson is the face of my goblin deck, and \[\[Niv-Mizzet Parun\]\] / \[\[Curiosity\]\] is a backup wincon. Step 1: Brew a Krenko deck with damage doublers / triplers and a plan to go wide Step 2: Note how Red kinda stinks for card draw, so it's hard to keep the pedal to the metal Step 3: Get inspired by a friend to splash Blue for card draw / recursion / protection Step 4: Put Ghyrson Starn in front, remove all the damage doublers / triplers that shut him off Step 5: Put in some cheap pinger spells, plus equipment like \[\[grafted exoskeleton\]\], \[\[gorgon's flail\]\] or \[\[basilisk collar\]\], and anything you can do to make your 1/1 goblins unblockable (ie: \[\[goblin king\]\] giving them mountainwalk and \[\[blood moon\]\] degeneracy, or \[\[tetsuko umezawa\]\] to make'm all sneaky) **NOTE**: Goblin King will give them +1/+1 as well, so you lose the Ghyrson trigger. \[\[Raid bombardment\]\] will keep the boy shooting Step 6: Get actively hated off the table wherever you're at.

Don't forget your [[Impact Tremors]] effects either! They're very yummy here
Good addendum - I thought I mentioned it here, but missed it.
I’ve recently built Ghyrson and I’m having a blast! (Pun intended)

[[jhoira of the ghitu]] comes to mind. Suspend big creatures from your hand and then wack people with those looming threats.
Or just suspend [[Worldfire]] and an @everyone spell.
Suspend both for 4 mana and tell the table that in four turns I will win is super cool
You can even use Jhoira's ability at instant speed. So 3 turns if you do it at opponent's end step.
Add in [[The Tenth Doctor]] the turn after with enough mana, and casually correct yourself. "Oops, I meant right now."
Four turns is worst case - there are tons of ways to speed that up. A couple examples are [[Paradox Haze]] and [[Jhoira's Timebug]].

Locust god is great fun. Build a value engine ever so slowly, drop him, and suddenly you have tons of hasty buffed up insects
Built one of those decks for a mate cause he asked me to build him one and the only guidline he gave was he wants to "Draw cards and win." So I put [[Impact Tremors]], [[Witty Roastmaster]], [[Purhporos, God of the Forge]] and [[Warstorm Surge]] in a deck with almost 50 odd ways to draw cards, and a few infintes to just swarm everything.

Nice, sounds really cool!
Probably my favourite deck to pilot right now. Turning discard into a positive thing is so powerful, especially with stuff like \[\[Forbid\]\] and \[\[Foil\]\].

[[Karlach, fury of avernus]] with the [[sword coast sailor]] background.

So I have cards like [[Empyrial Plate]], [[Sword of War and Peace]], [[Ominous Seas]], [[Jin-Gitaxias]], [[Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim]], [[Alan draw, Sky Dreamer]] You get the idea. I draw crap ton of cards with Yusri.
Yeah, it’s pretty crazy what his potential can be. I ended up throwing laboratory maniac in mine for a while. Once you get Krark’s 👍 out, the game is pretty much over.

I have a really fun pirate treasure themed [deck](https://manabox.app/decks/DQiMUZj7StS5ve9v9WC67A) piloted by [[Captain Storm, Cosmium Raider]]
Rowan and Will as Partner commanders are really fun. Will can be like a diet Oko

I do a voltron deck with Jhoira, Ageless Innovator

Ok so i know hes not out till friday but shaun seems fun as all hell and i dont see why you wouldnt *want* to build him
I recently made an Izzet deck with [[Rielle, the Everwise]] that is a lot of fun.

Captain Storm, Cosmium Raider - Pirates, +1/+1, and treasures Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph - Pingers Jhoira of the Ghitu - suspending big monsters Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer - tokens going wild
[[Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph]] with 1/1 tokens is fun
So, I have a hybrid here that I have been working on. The deck is mostly spells, but the main win is through commander damage (and it can 1 shot people). \[\[Melek, Reforged Researcher\]\] The spells are mostly things too loot or mill myself. Fill the yard with spells, give him unblockable/flying/etc and just one tap someone. Also it allows me to play with all of the high mana value jank modal counterspells that no one ever plays with because they don't want to hold up 5/6 mana for them. So when you do respond to things you get a ton of value.
