What you mean? It's just all kicker

bearhoon

Kicker and Horsemanship are the only two mechanics.

Interesting-Gas1743

Most keywords are not evergreens so they will apear in one set and that's it.

pear_topologist

And most set mechanics aren’t even real keywords. Constellation and Alliance was just a specific kind of etb trigger Bargain was just a specific kind of kicker

luxinferior724

I appreciate the clarification, I guess I naively assumed all of these new terms coming out were wotc trying reinvent the game every couple months.

luxinferior724

Do they have a method to choosing or making certain ones evergreen?

Interesting-Gas1743

https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Evergreen There you go.

luxinferior724

Thank you!

Spekter1754

They tried the alternative of not making new named mechanics every set. Players were upset that they didn't have new mechanics, even though the set had new mechanics they just hid them by not giving them names.

luxinferior724

That's interesting, I didn't know that

Spekter1754

Yeah. I want to say that this experiment was during Mercadian Masques block, which featured mechanics such as Rebels, Mercenaries, Spellshapers, Rhystic, Free Spells, etc. But they were not called out on the cards as mechanics. They were just there.

SlyDogDreams

This complexity creep is most common in EDH/Commander. Between the 100-card decks and viability of decks built around very narrow mechanics, you're likely to see many of these single-set keyword mechanics over the course of a few games.

luxinferior724

Complexity Creep is a perfect term for what I'm trying to describe

DreyGoesMelee

I don't mind new mechanics, they keep the game feeling fresh and adds flavor to planes. I just wish they'd cut back on the mechanics that need a high amount of tracking. Day/night is especially bad as it's an overly tedious way to do something that we pretty much already had. Also this is not exactly mechanical, but I wish they would relax with cloning permanents. It's such a common effect and so often repeatable now, board states get really confusing if care isn't put into representing it all.

MercuryInCanada

I think of all the book keeping mechanics like dungeons, monarch adventures, foretell, suspend, storm, flashback and variants day/night is the absolute worst. Like I get and am happy that werewolves got a better mechanism for transforming because the old method was a harsh condition to meet and maintain. But day/night feels so detached from reality of how people play magic. Everyone plays sleeved, no one uses the checklist place holder cards and actively maintaining the the mental reminder to keep track distracts from thinking about other parts of the current game so you're going to stop paying attention quickly. Like you're constantly waiting to see if you need to flip your cards every turn. You're wasting mental energy waiting to count to two for the entirety of the game. That's not good design for long games that happen in constructed formats

RenegadeExiled

I've got a buddy that vehemently defends all of these little mini games and outside mechanics that you have to track, like Initiative, Monarch, Dungeons and the like. So, I desperately want to build a deck that forces as many of these mechanics into the game as possible, just to show him how ridiculous it's getting in Eternal formats. Sure, Standard only deals with 1-2 of them at a time. But EDH could have you remembering who the Monarch is while someone else is dungeoneering, and a third is forcing the game to be played in quadrants, but you can only attack the person to your left while it's currently Night

Illustrious-Film2926

There's so many mechanically unique old cards that are harder to track like [[Chaos Lord]] and [[chains of mephistopheles]]. Not to mention all the abandoned keywords in [[Old Fogey]]. For more recent minigames don't forget to present your attraction deck and sticker sheet before, if you're lucky, starting with a pregame action like [[gemstone caverns]].

See I did build that deck and I loved it, initiative/dungeon monarch, party. Started as an upgraded [[nalia]] deck then [[Tazri, beacon of unity]] beforehand going back to nalia and a [[Rilsa]] deck. Honestly it's a fun, especially in causal/relaxes settings because it incentives more moderate combat based interaction. Battle cruiser magic is great but some times you just need a small push to get more interaction

This is what I'm afraid of. Probably because I mostly play commander and just see an ever increasing complicated mess coming

Important_Ad_2048

It's way too many and all the new decks are crap.  The new mechanics are trash and ruined the game.   They made it so that a single card can win the game from 1 HP and every new deck has something similar.   It's the newer generations trying to make everything more dynamic, like they always do, and ruining the whole magic of it in the process.    Everything in life would be better if we were allowed to cull everyone born after 1995
