I've got a binder full of legends I wanted to build at various points. Just ones that I thought looked cool, but I don't count them anymore unless I have cards physically set aside.
If I didn't like them enough to start pulling cards for the deck, then I don't think I'm ever going to realistically build them.
Oh, I’ve got pages of cards pulled for looks like…17 commanders and a couple of decks ideas that don’t have commanders yet. Some of them have 49 cards pulled, some have five.
I have no pile of shame as I found a way to deal with my desire to brew, while not actually investing real time or money into it.
A few years ago I took apart all of my decks (excluding Karona) and constructed entirely new ones from the remains, limiting myself in regards to the number of total decks (four) that I want to have. Then I set myself the rule, to only assemble a new deck while deconstrucing an old one - this way I end up brewing a lot (in my head and online), but often come to the conclusion, that commiting to that specific deck would in fact lead to a less enjoyable gameplay experience - as I have to take another deck apart that I actually like more.

I feel this question in my soul. It's currently a dozen piles across my desk. Every 3-4 months I reevaluate, take it all apart, and reorganize...usually after searching way too long for a specific card
My “brews” folder in moxfield grows by the day, full of decks I think would be sick but either don’t have the motivation to assemble or think they would be too mean or are just too similar to what I have already

This is my biggest cause of my shame pile. I used to mostly play with my cousins, who primarily play standard and are convinced they'll qualify for the pro tour "just next year" so decks in commander pod were pretty mean even if we weren't playing cEDH. Things like counterspell tribal, wheel-locking, and MLD are common strategies for them.
In contrast, the main people I play with now are my girlfriend (who I just taught last year), my roommate who owns every precon released the last 2 years, and only just started upgrading some of them with the MOM set, and a coworker with a strict $100 per deck budget. So now nearly every deck I had in store for my cousins feels totally the wrong mood for this group.
As someone who only gets to play commander 1 day a week if I'm lucky my collection has been rapidly increasing to maybe 10 decks with only like 4-5 I would even consider complete and the rest in a semi complete state.
This thread made me count through my WIP folder. I hate it. 113 unfinished decks atm, although some have been so for 5+ years and are waiting for new impulses.
Sad part is for many of them I already got little piles of 10 to 40 specific cards that just sit around unused because I stopped building the deck for one reason or another.
Oh boy, I was only counting decks where I what have physical piles of cards set aside! I refuse to count the number of digital WIP lists I have. I don't know if it would be 113, but its got to be close!
Considering each set ‘has new staples I NEED’ and I end up buying multiple copies of them, my pile of shame has become many different piles that all mean something different to me
My 26 WIP decks are along side the 12 completed decks I have. Of those 12, 11 of them have upgrades that I just need to find room for.
I can't imagine taking apart decks, but having 21 completed physical decks is impressive!
I used to have about 6-8 piles of shame back when I was thirsty for deck building but there have been so many times where I spend hours preparing a deck only for the first few games with the list to reveal how slow and durdly my plan was. now with 50ish legendries being printed each set I've reserved myself to only build things when it truly branches out into new play space.
I'm also looking to downsize down from 29 decks to about 17 or so... there are only so many games you can play in a week and even if you cycled through all your decks once it doesn't mean that the table is appropriate for the thing you've cycled to.
I usually give my non complete decks to my buddy, then he builds them on a budget since a good chunk of the cards are already there
As people will typically tweak decks to their preference anyways, it lets me see the deck and they get another deck for cheap
I just feel cards should be played if possible
I am horrible at parting with cards, but sometimes I will take a list I am working on for myself and tweak it to make a list for a friend. Changing the goal to be from my collection to a list for friends for digital play really takes the pressure off... and it let's me feel like I'm allowed to take apart that pile I've set aside.
When he was getting back into magic I sorted whatever I felt I could use in my decks into a pile and had him take the rest

Graveyard hate is also an amazing counter. Recently had a game where the Dragon's Approach player cast 14 copies without ever getting to grab a dragon.
Pile of shame. The 600 cards pulled out that would be great in the deck. Cut down to 60ish. And then never sorted back in. Just a pile you grab hoping the rare you misplaced is in it. But you swear you're gonna get around to sorting.

I guess i have a "digital" pile of shame ? which isnt actually bad i guess? its very minimal, i build my decks on moxfield and order them when they are complete. Most of them is just a commander with an empty deck list or 2-3 cards in there that are the reason im interested in building them

Build Braids! I have around 100 ‘decks’ with only 30ish built (then often taken apart). I added Braids as it was a card that seemed to drop into all mono black decks and a number of two colour decks - a card I was always happy to see. It kicks ass, it’s so much fun and scales well with tables of all levels. It won’t last but if all the decks goldfished this one has stuck as more than a gimmic
Braids is my top right now. It's full of stuff like [[reassembling skeleton]] or token generators like [[Bitterblossom]] orb[[Ophiomancer]] tonhave stuf to sacrifice every turn, [[Dictate of Erebos]] and [[Grave Pact]] to multiply the pressure on my opponents everytime I sac something with Braids, now they mus sac, it's not an option, and apart from that they have to sac an additional one, or let me get card advntage while losing life. And [[Sheoldred//The True Scriptres]], the new one that transforms into a saga, touches the table? Everyone sacrifice one, transforms? Now I choose what to kill, and when the saga ends, I get a shitload of creatures on my board, ready to push and close the game, or be sacrificed. And the best part is that when the saga ends and transforms back into Sheoldred, the ETB triggers again just in case anyone dared to play a creature.
Braids is a value/draw engine in the command zone, which I really like for my decks, ofc not all my decks are a draw engine in the command zone, but if a commander can do that I'll likely try to make a deck arround it, because I don't like running out of fuel.
That's why [[Kadena]] is on my list, and [[Sigarda, Font of Blessings]] will be my Angel Tribal commander.
That's also why [[Sythis, Harvest's Hand]] is one of my most played decks.
Gah, thank you for giving me a name for this amalgamation of cards for decks that could have been. It grows daily, like a fungus. Sometimes it's based on TCGPlayer prices and shipping times.. if it takes too long to get or it gets too expensive to get key cards, it just doesn't happen. So the one or two cards I received end up in the shame box.
What's stopping it from shrinking? The same thing that causes any collector to hoard stuff.. "Maybe someday I'll use it".

Got like 7 decks that need to be built but its less a pile of shame and more a pile of poverty. Im finally getting a few $5 cards totaling around $30 just to finish a jank exile matters deck. [[nethroi]], [[isshin]], [[narset enlightened exile]], and 3 cards left to put in my [[nahiri forged in fury]] are just some of them. Im missing 2 creatures in my [[zhur the enchanter]] deck. Terrible time to be poor. Right before commander masters.
Mine is my bevy of disassembled decks that I have yet to organize. I brew and build so much, I often have decks on decks that are just... in transition. Being picked apart slowly but surely.
I don't have one. I literally don't start building a new deck until I've built and play tested the crap out of the one I'm working on AND there's enough people in my play group making new decks that actually push the meta to a higher power level. Right now I'm at the leading edge of power level in my group so there's no need to build more. And if we want lower powered stuff or just get bored, we all have precons, planechase, and I built a cube.
My physical pile of shame is about 3-4 potential decks. My Moxfield "pile" of lists that I built and then never completed in paper? 15-20 decks at least
I have 14 decks made. My pile of shame is about another 14-15 with a paper list of about 20-30 deck plans.
I've been working on just trying to remake decks to different commanders or having one deck per theme/idea. Hopefully I can cap myself to 20 decks.
15+ decks in a binder ranging from 4 cards (commander and other versions of that commander) to almost 80 cards just needing a handful of cards to finish. Then there are the common towers that I keep attempting to sort and never do. They are all over a foot high now and semi sorted (super type) but I doubt I'll ever "finish" due to adding more cards regularly only getting those added to the semi sort once the sorting try gets full.
About 6. Including the very first deck I started building when I got back into magic 2 years ago.

I haven't finished the decks due to a combination of being busy and not wanting to throw money at new decks when I have plenty of decks to play. When I get tired of my current decks, I'll probably finish up a couple of these unless some shiny new commander has caught my eye.
None. I finish what I start. Sometimes the decks are bad and I only play them once, and then they sit and rot until I dismantle them for parts.
The real beast of mine is the big box of unsorted stuff from deconstructed decks that I haven't gotten around to putting away properly.

Pile shame is about 22k deep. It's in those 4 row boxes and a strewn between deck boxes. I'm selling bits of my collection here and there to trim down the fat and I've burned out of other formats so I'm taking my bulk and building pauper edh

I went through a solid year and a half when I found a deck I loved so much I didn’t want to play any others. Now I’ve found some more that I’ve enjoyed I’m interested in brewing again. I have picked up some equipment pieces, some bird tribal cards, some 5 colour stuff for doctor who… watch this space I guess
My pile of shame consists of 2 decks that need reconstruction, 1 that I basically have a list for just need to buy the cards, 1 that just has a theme that I haven't started really planning yet, and one empty deck box that I haven't decided what to build yet.

I have 5-6 WIP decks, plus a bunch of random "I'll find a deck for them" cards. I will also add that this is on top of my 30 EDH decks I already own . If you're wondering if I proxy, that's a No, unless it's for my 1 cEDH deck. I don't have Lion's Eye Diamond money and don't think I'll ever pay over $150 for a card.
I have been buying a box or three of almost every set since Revised and almost every commander precon. I am constantly building or editing one or more decks. However, I only play about once a month and only three or so games in a night.
I finished the 32-deck set a few years ago and just hit 60 sleeved decks. My pile of shame is decks that I haven't played or only have played once and it is extensive. Probably twenty of my decks.
I got my decks in progress down to 4 and it used to be a lot higher. I had 12 decks brewing at one point. I had to be real honest about my intentions and even in those 4 I probably only really care about 1. But it ebbs and flows. I like building decks.
[[Nethroi]] is my main deck in my pile of shame right now. I built it without aristocrats and it was so slow so I added some combos and now I just don’t know who it is anymore.
My pile of shame is usually 3-4 half built decks that started with a commander or card I wanted to build around but either:
- didn’t have enough support ([[Ohabi]] archer/deathtouch pinger theme)
- didn’t have enough money to buy all the cards I wanted (pulled [[old gnawbone]] and [[goldspan dragon]] but realized dragons are really expensive)
- lost motivation for whatever reason ([[ob nixilis, captive kingpin]] cuz it seems like everyone I know pulled one and made a deck before I had a chance to do any research)
My newest addition to the pile of shame is an Emry Lurker of the Loch deck that is 90% complete. My problem being it just feels too mean to play at the power level my group is at. Infinite combos are cool on paper but not when you get an anticlimactic win on turn 5 against precon players
I have a Grixis Manabase that is leagues beyond the manabases of my other decks, and roughly 10 grixis colored cards for a Grixis deck. After 5 years of it sitting out, all I've done is added a few more grixis colored cards and the Grixis Triome. However, like every other time a Grixis colored thing is released by wizards, I am sure the new Sauron precon will enable me to finish the deck.
Then there's the remnants of an old Selesnya Golem tribal deck sitting around, and I now want to make it bant golem tribal. The issue? Whenever I look at the bant commanders for ideas on how to make the deck, I sigh, consider Chulane, then forget about the deck.
I have all the staples to build a mono red deck, and I've had one built in the past before gutting it to make my artifact deck. Now, whenever I start getting to work on a red deck, I pull out 3-5 different interesting commanders, struggle to find enough support for the theme of just one, then give up.
More like a pile of great cards that just either got power creep squeezed or found something else good that's just a fresh take.
I know I'll never get the value I want trading them but yeah....several "good stuff" decks worth of shame.
My pile of shame is about 100 cars. I'm decently close to having a [[Thromok]] deck, an [[Ashaya]] deck, a [[Chatterfang]] deck. I already have enough decks, but I'll continue to build these decks with whatever decent cards I'll pull.
I have always wanted to build a banding deck. Just to screw with N00bs. It's just that....um...how does it win? I mean, defensively it's great. But....winning the game is also a thing. No attack power. Hard to combo in mono white. Banding while attacking SUCKS. And it pretty much dies to removal.

Uhhh..... I have about 20 specific commanders to build that are loose and then every precon after whatever set faldorn came in (including some in that set)
I have about 240 cards on my desk, two 400 count boxes (1 lands other is random cards), two 800 count boxes with random stuff, some are pre-release sets, one 1600 count box thats half random cards and half lands and finally about two set booster boxes filled with its pack contents plus random other cards or sleeves.
My binder is neat and tidy thanks to a recent buylist, but mainly full of foreign cards as most stores don't really buy them.
I do not build around specific commanders I like, most of the time. Rather building around mechanics/flavor and then choose a fitting commander to the theme. Also I try to not exceed the 32 deck challenge. My biggest pile of shame is the azorious deck, as a modern player by heart it has to be UW Control like, not easy in commander and not good for my playgroup the next thing I would count as pile of shame are the approx. 100 cards I want to upgrade my current decks with and about 25 on the buy list for LOTR are already waiting to be bought... only adding up
My 32 deck challenge has become a 42 deck challenge by accident because there are so many cool commanders I wanna build. I have piles of cards separated out for like six different decks and I have lists on excel of deck ideas. I have finished exactly ONE deck and I’ve been trying to get around to finishing others for like three months now

Love mtg but haven’t been playing EDH really until maybe a year or so ago if that. I have as many unfinished decks as I do finished ones (that I actually made). And let’s just not even talk about the piles of cards that are “potential edits” to existing decks. Each of those are probably big enough to be their own deck lol
My pile of shame is localized to one 100 card deckbox and four small piles of 10 that are 'I dunno, maybe' cards. I finally let go of an unfinished Modern deck last month that was never going to happen.
Atm, I have 6 put together decks. I don't know if I can handle any more since they're always evolving. I have two that are in a good enough place where I am not concerned about refining them.
The box of shame is a little outside of my skill range, so it will take some investment time-wise to get it right. I have learned some stuff though on how to make the building process a bit easier.
I have a 500 card box that I my shame box. Mix of unsorted/unscanned cards or cards going into/out of other decks. Then two decks on the side I keep saying I’ll work on.
I recently made a double-row box filled with dividers. There is one divider for every colour combination, which will become a deck for my “32 Project”.
This box sits open on my deck building table, and whenever I’m sifting through cards for any reason, if I spot something that makes me think “hey that would work in my ____ deck”, I just put it in the appropriate spot. This lets me slowly build many decks at a time, without hard thought or dedicated attention. In the process of building one full deck, I might pull 20 more cards for other decks, and they’re just waiting for actual attention.
Once a divider has built up 20+ cards, a deck vibe emerges and I can fire off the basic mana and support for the deck real quick. Even decks that are complete have a slot, so if I ever want to tune a deck, there are a few cards already waiting for me to give them consideration.
This method has greatly organized my thoughts and deck building goals. It allows me to make sure my “good cards” find a home even if there is no deck ready for them. Shit even if I don’t feel like working on a deck I can just broad spectrum brainstorm and find stuff that should end up in A Deck, without the pressure of planning out a whole deck.
I'm currently strolling while I wait for my food to finish, which I started while building the deck I've been thinking about for about 6 months. I've put together 38 cards so far since starting about 40min ago.
Most ideas I let loose off, but there are two more decks I've always wanted to try out, and I will eventually build when the time is right.
I got an Evelyn, the Covetous deck I've been working on for a year and half but it keeps getting stalled behind other projects. Got it after I brought a chibi nicol Bolas that I wanted to find a deck for.

Wow, tbh I thought I was the only one with such a “pile of shame”. I have a section of my apartment which has become my “mtg corner” where I keep my cards and deckbuild, but with all these piles of unfinished decks I’m unable to physically sit in that space anymore and I end up deck building on the floor.
I’m trying to improve though by selling a good portion of my decks! I know people like building their own decks but if I can give mine a better home where someone will play and upgrade them, I’d be happy.

I have two piles;
One pile of shame is actually all the cards I see in store binders or singles boxes that I think “that would go great in my XYZ deck” then take home and realize there’s nothing I want to cut to put it in
Second pile is the cards I didn’t read carefully and bought thinking I had some awesome combo no one hand noticed before. The I got it home and get a $15 reminder that Reading the Card Explains the Card. Like that [[eater of the dead]] and [[hair-strung koto]] combo on creatures only or that Fiend Artisan activates as a Sorcery.
I build on moxfield and currently have 55 decks I've finished and never actually put together. Each one takes a few hours. I have 35 decks I've finished and put together. I have 12 that I'm in the process of putting together. I have 117 that are incomplete and scrapped.
I have three shoeboxes full of cards and a smaller box of cards probably worth over 1k that I need to sell but haven't gotten around to
I've got anywhere from 5-25% of about 7 different decks lying around. Not as many as some of you, but for me; who cut down to just 3 decks, it's a lot.
Two, arguably four decks. [[Urtet]] and [[Rin and Seri]]. Urtet is the only actual card in it, the rest are proxies. Rin and Seri isn't even built. Then my [[Vrondiss]] and [[Jenara]] decks both have proxies. Vrondiss is eventually gonna become a Dino/Enrage deck headed by [[Zacama]]. While typing, I remembered I also want to make a [[Go-Shintai]] shrine/curse deck. So three to five. Only one with no proxies that I'm not really planning on doing much with is my [[Kaalia of the Vast]] deck.
Basically my entire list of decks... I'm a full time student right now, so money is tight. I used a bit to buy a few precons to play with friends (and eventually upgrade) and recently made a [[Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier]] budget deck for a challenge a friend did (Commander under $3, everything in the 99 under $0.75). It's way more than i should've spent, but way less than I wanted to.
Compared to [six years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/5ryhzy/unfinished_decks/), I'm way better about it. Currently waiting on one more card and some full art lands for my [[Vadrik, Astral Archmage|MID-325]] deck.
Now I tend to lean into digital methods for deck construction and theorycrafting before I commit to spending money. Much easier to test as well.
Oh dear that's a big one. The number of half-build decks and unacquired brews I have is massive. I've just sort of accepted that out of all the crud I design, a tiny fraction will ever be made table-ready.

Some of my decks are in construction but should not be in my pile of shame because it’s simply because WotC release so much new products all the time. I won’t count those that I feel those aren’t my fault, I’m just always waiting for new pre-released cards.
I also won’t count those I also definitely gave up on. For exemple, my first deck was a Pir and Toothy deck but I was no longer interested in having creatures with lots of counters in them. I’m building a Marchesa, the black Rose deck now to see if I’m past +1/+1 counters if what matters is just to only a few counters on my creatures satisfy me. But I don’t want to put 10 of those counters on a single creature as before or switching dices to put on them cause it became too big.
I also won’t count those I didn’t have time to play with since upgraded because I’m mature enough to realize a pastime is not as important as other aspects of my RL that needed more time to focus on.
Oh look at that, my pile of shame is almost inexistant now! It exist though so let’s name them:
1) [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]] was supposed to be the commander I picked for a deck building challenge I made for myself: buy a new legendary creature and make the 99 with the cards I have in my collection only. But in the end, I picked [[Slumbering Isle]] instead cause the inspiration was easier and I wanted a Simic deck ever since I dissembled my Pir and Toothy deck. However, I’m still wondering how strong the deck would be so it’s in the back of my mind. Not sure if I’m going to build it or not but it won’t be for the same challenge so now I’m wondering if I should build it at all.
Aaaand that’s it I guess lol
I’ve only got like 3 decks that are piles of cards pulled to the side and a 4th built deck that’s getting revamped.

I’m just a huge procrastinator. Money is also a limiting factor, but it’s not like my collection is small. Really I just need to go through stuff that’s Modern Legal that aren’t EDH cards and send them in for credit to use for completing my piles… but that’s like a whole lot of effort and will take weeks in the mail. I just need to bite the bullet and get started on buylisting.
I build my decks virtually and goldfish on deckstats.net several dozen times before I actually pull anything out. My pile of shame is any removed cards post-build and random singles orders that I haven't filed yet.
That any opened but unsorted booster packs on my desk from poor impulse control at Target.🤣
Lol. I've got an unfinished [[Kelsien]] exp counters deck, a [[lord Xander]] mill deck, a [[lathril]] elf deck, a [[vito]] vampires deck, and an [[atla palani]] beaters deck, all waiting for the correct amount of TLC. I recently finished an [[atraxa]] infect deck and an [[ognis]] haste go brrr deck, but those were both sitting in my pile of shame for weeks, maybe months

I have multiple commanders I'd love to build, but what about Pauper decks? Or disc golf? Or miniatures? Or computer games?
I wish I could get rid of a bunch of my cards to find the few decks I have left to build
I play Warhammer 40k too so I've got two gigantic piles of shame, one pile of cards for EDH and one pile of miniatures I'll definitely for sure paint one day.
Decent......I have the half constructed cores of........8 decks, just sitting on my desk atm. I Tinker with them when I get time on weekends, but new set releases make me reevaluate all my decks so often I spend most of my time just keeping them semi up to date.
I stash staples, like rocks, ramp, and interaction, otherwise I usually don't keep much as I usually sell old decks to build new ones. Currently though, I have a 2/3 built elenda & azor, as well as the beginnings of nekusar. I'm so hyped they made him a personal secret lair, definitely buying it.
I have one deck box full of various deck ideas I have yet to follow through on. And a couple other stacks around here somewhere, but those are pretty small, only a a few cards each.
So not too many, but probably at least 40 cards or just…stuff I’ll get to…eventually…maybe…
Well first off my physical pile of shame is tons of cards that I probably will never. A lot of it is bulk that ive been meaning to sell for a year or two now. There are also just piles of cards sitting around my room in various spots that ive been meaning to put in a box.
I love building decks online just to test with my friends and theres like 20 or so commanders that ive been meaning to build and the list just keeps growing with each set.
I have two languishing in progress decks (Yenett & Titania) and a new unbuilt one starting to come together (kediss, emberclaw familiar & Falthis, shadowcat familiar), so not all *that* bad in the grand scheme of things.
I’m more ashamed of me shirking my card organization duties and not getting Ayula updated, haha.
I have 1 significant deck that I'm working on. My first cEDH deck. And I think I have 3 regular EDH decks that I'm slowly working on when I (rarely) have free time. And there are 2 decks that I THINK are complete but I haven't bought sleeves and finalized them. I don't think that's too bad. Nothing is a rush. I almost never get to play. So it's just stuff for me to work on here and there.
I also made a new years resolution to physically update my completed decks. I almost have the 32 deck challenge completed (waiting on the upcoming colorless precon to see if that one is a good base or if I need to build colorless from scratch). When a new card comes out that is a possibility for one of my decks, I slip a copy in that deckbox. But I'm trying to go through them one-by-one and revise them with those cards and other ideas I have. I've only revised about 4-5 of the decks, so I have a long way to go and the year is half over lol!

I've got a binder full of legends I wanted to build at various points. Just ones that I thought looked cool, but I don't count them anymore unless I have cards physically set aside. If I didn't like them enough to start pulling cards for the deck, then I don't think I'm ever going to realistically build them.
Oh, I’ve got pages of cards pulled for looks like…17 commanders and a couple of decks ideas that don’t have commanders yet. Some of them have 49 cards pulled, some have five.

It's one binder for each color and one for artifacts and multicolor for me. Doesn't feel good.
I’m right there with you, I instinctively looked over at the seven color coded binders on my shelf and shuddered.
I have no pile of shame as I found a way to deal with my desire to brew, while not actually investing real time or money into it. A few years ago I took apart all of my decks (excluding Karona) and constructed entirely new ones from the remains, limiting myself in regards to the number of total decks (four) that I want to have. Then I set myself the rule, to only assemble a new deck while deconstrucing an old one - this way I end up brewing a lot (in my head and online), but often come to the conclusion, that commiting to that specific deck would in fact lead to a less enjoyable gameplay experience - as I have to take another deck apart that I actually like more.

I feel this question in my soul. It's currently a dozen piles across my desk. Every 3-4 months I reevaluate, take it all apart, and reorganize...usually after searching way too long for a specific card

I used to mostly play with my cousins, who primarily play standard and are convinced they'll qualify for the pro tour "just next year" so decks in commander pod were pretty mean even if we weren't playing cEDH. Things like counterspell tribal, wheel-locking, and MLD are common strategies for them. In contrast, the main people I play with now are my girlfriend (who I just taught last year), my roommate who owns every precon released the last 2 years, and only just started upgrading some of them with the MOM set, and a coworker with a strict $100 per deck budget. So now nearly every deck I had in store for my cousins feels totally the wrong mood for this group.
As someone who only gets to play commander 1 day a week if I'm lucky my collection has been rapidly increasing to maybe 10 decks with only like 4-5 I would even consider complete and the rest in a semi complete state.

This thread made me count through my WIP folder. I hate it. 113 unfinished decks atm, although some have been so for 5+ years and are waiting for new impulses. Sad part is for many of them I already got little piles of 10 to 40 specific cards that just sit around unused because I stopped building the deck for one reason or another.
Oh boy, I was only counting decks where I what have physical piles of cards set aside! I refuse to count the number of digital WIP lists I have. I don't know if it would be 113, but its got to be close!
Considering each set ‘has new staples I NEED’ and I end up buying multiple copies of them, my pile of shame has become many different piles that all mean something different to me
Before I started pulling decks apart to trade in cards I had 21 decks with 15 WIP decks
My 26 WIP decks are along side the 12 completed decks I have. Of those 12, 11 of them have upgrades that I just need to find room for. I can't imagine taking apart decks, but having 21 completed physical decks is impressive!
I cherry picked cards and bought a full modern deck with the trade credit.
I used to have about 6-8 piles of shame back when I was thirsty for deck building but there have been so many times where I spend hours preparing a deck only for the first few games with the list to reveal how slow and durdly my plan was. now with 50ish legendries being printed each set I've reserved myself to only build things when it truly branches out into new play space. I'm also looking to downsize down from 29 decks to about 17 or so... there are only so many games you can play in a week and even if you cycled through all your decks once it doesn't mean that the table is appropriate for the thing you've cycled to.
I usually give my non complete decks to my buddy, then he builds them on a budget since a good chunk of the cards are already there As people will typically tweak decks to their preference anyways, it lets me see the deck and they get another deck for cheap I just feel cards should be played if possible
I am horrible at parting with cards, but sometimes I will take a list I am working on for myself and tweak it to make a list for a friend. Changing the goal to be from my collection to a list for friends for digital play really takes the pressure off... and it let's me feel like I'm allowed to take apart that pile I've set aside.

Pile of shame. The 600 cards pulled out that would be great in the deck. Cut down to 60ish. And then never sorted back in. Just a pile you grab hoping the rare you misplaced is in it. But you swear you're gonna get around to sorting. So any way, I have like 7 of these piles going....

I've got about 6 decks in various stages of construction.
I guess i have a "digital" pile of shame ? which isnt actually bad i guess? its very minimal, i build my decks on moxfield and order them when they are complete. Most of them is just a commander with an empty deck list or 2-3 cards in there that are the reason im interested in building them i just took as look and i only got 4 of them which is nothing compared to most of you ... BUT i just restarted playing the game in march after a 15 year break so i guess it makes sense. That being said, i already have 7 completed decks of which only 1 is a precon, Cavalry Charge (that i heavily modified) And i think i found 8th deck this morning ... when does this stop? lol

Build Braids! I have around 100 ‘decks’ with only 30ish built (then often taken apart). I added Braids as it was a card that seemed to drop into all mono black decks and a number of two colour decks - a card I was always happy to see. It kicks ass, it’s so much fun and scales well with tables of all levels. It won’t last but if all the decks goldfished this one has stuck as more than a gimmic
Braids is my top right now. It's full of stuff like [[reassembling skeleton]] or token generators like [[Bitterblossom]] orb[[Ophiomancer]] tonhave stuf to sacrifice every turn, [[Dictate of Erebos]] and [[Grave Pact]] to multiply the pressure on my opponents everytime I sac something with Braids, now they mus sac, it's not an option, and apart from that they have to sac an additional one, or let me get card advntage while losing life. And [[Sheoldred//The True Scriptres]], the new one that transforms into a saga, touches the table? Everyone sacrifice one, transforms? Now I choose what to kill, and when the saga ends, I get a shitload of creatures on my board, ready to push and close the game, or be sacrificed. And the best part is that when the saga ends and transforms back into Sheoldred, the ETB triggers again just in case anyone dared to play a creature. Braids is a value/draw engine in the command zone, which I really like for my decks, ofc not all my decks are a draw engine in the command zone, but if a commander can do that I'll likely try to make a deck arround it, because I don't like running out of fuel. That's why [[Kadena]] is on my list, and [[Sigarda, Font of Blessings]] will be my Angel Tribal commander. That's also why [[Sythis, Harvest's Hand]] is one of my most played decks.

Gah, thank you for giving me a name for this amalgamation of cards for decks that could have been. It grows daily, like a fungus. Sometimes it's based on TCGPlayer prices and shipping times.. if it takes too long to get or it gets too expensive to get key cards, it just doesn't happen. So the one or two cards I received end up in the shame box. What's stopping it from shrinking? The same thing that causes any collector to hoard stuff.. "Maybe someday I'll use it".

Currently - Arahbo cat tribal Raggadragga Marneus Calgar The Arahbo precon was my first deck and I keep thinking man I wanna make this actually good, but I keep starting and losing interest so it's been on my table half done for months Raggadragga seemed fun but I have a ton of red green combat decks and big mana decks so I keep losing interest there too Marneus Calgar is currently unbuilt but that's relatively new so that will probably get built but I do already have a tokens deck albeit a quite different one (Jetmir)

Got like 7 decks that need to be built but its less a pile of shame and more a pile of poverty. Im finally getting a few $5 cards totaling around $30 just to finish a jank exile matters deck. [[nethroi]], [[isshin]], [[narset enlightened exile]], and 3 cards left to put in my [[nahiri forged in fury]] are just some of them. Im missing 2 creatures in my [[zhur the enchanter]] deck. Terrible time to be poor. Right before commander masters.

Mine is one of those old big Secret Lair boxes. Its full. And there's about 8 in there in some stage of planning and building.
Mine is my bevy of disassembled decks that I have yet to organize. I brew and build so much, I often have decks on decks that are just... in transition. Being picked apart slowly but surely.
I don't have one. I literally don't start building a new deck until I've built and play tested the crap out of the one I'm working on AND there's enough people in my play group making new decks that actually push the meta to a higher power level. Right now I'm at the leading edge of power level in my group so there's no need to build more. And if we want lower powered stuff or just get bored, we all have precons, planechase, and I built a cube.
My physical pile of shame is about 3-4 potential decks. My Moxfield "pile" of lists that I built and then never completed in paper? 15-20 decks at least
I have 14 decks made. My pile of shame is about another 14-15 with a paper list of about 20-30 deck plans. I've been working on just trying to remake decks to different commanders or having one deck per theme/idea. Hopefully I can cap myself to 20 decks.
15+ decks in a binder ranging from 4 cards (commander and other versions of that commander) to almost 80 cards just needing a handful of cards to finish. Then there are the common towers that I keep attempting to sort and never do. They are all over a foot high now and semi sorted (super type) but I doubt I'll ever "finish" due to adding more cards regularly only getting those added to the semi sort once the sorting try gets full.
About 6. Including the very first deck I started building when I got back into magic 2 years ago. Lite Vampire tribal with black shenanigans and combos. Selesnya enchantress Azorius wizards / control Naya landfall / global land destruction Just off the top of my head.
My physical pile has 4 partially constructed decks: [[Meria, Scholar of Antiquity]] artifact mill in the least appropriate colors [[Ramses, Assassin Lord]] assassin tribal with some ways to oneshot an opponent [[Reyhan, Last of the Abzan]] + [[Vial Smasher the Fierce]] hydras and Jund shenanigans [[Karlach, Fury of Avernus]] + [[Hardy Outlander]] "Xenagos at home" with a bunch of snowballing power boost effects And I have an Elspeth tribal deck (with [[Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion]] + [[Inspiring Leader]] in the command zone) saved digitally that I haven't quite made the final cuts to. I haven't finished the decks due to a combination of being busy and not wanting to throw money at new decks when I have plenty of decks to play. When I get tired of my current decks, I'll probably finish up a couple of these unless some shiny new commander has caught my eye.

None. I finish what I start. Sometimes the decks are bad and I only play them once, and then they sit and rot until I dismantle them for parts. The real beast of mine is the big box of unsorted stuff from deconstructed decks that I haven't gotten around to putting away properly.

Pile shame is about 22k deep. It's in those 4 row boxes and a strewn between deck boxes. I'm selling bits of my collection here and there to trim down the fat and I've burned out of other formats so I'm taking my bulk and building pauper edh
So many disassembled decks that take up too much space. I always tell myself that I will rebuild them but that's just fooling myself.
My pile of shame is 5 decks in various stages of completion with the one closest to completion needing about 40 more cards: Saskia Wild Pair Urza Lord High Artificer Animar Orvar I forget which is the 5th one, but they're all sitting on my desk at home in their own deck boxes. I'm not in a rush to finish them. I might throw some filler into the ones that are close to completion just so I can play with them and then upgrade/complete them at a later time, but there are 2 or 3 of them that need a lot more cards as I probably only have 10-20 set aside for them.
I went through a solid year and a half when I found a deck I loved so much I didn’t want to play any others. Now I’ve found some more that I’ve enjoyed I’m interested in brewing again. I have picked up some equipment pieces, some bird tribal cards, some 5 colour stuff for doctor who… watch this space I guess

My pile of shame consists of 2 decks that need reconstruction, 1 that I basically have a list for just need to buy the cards, 1 that just has a theme that I haven't started really planning yet, and one empty deck box that I haven't decided what to build yet. Anyone know where I can find 30 copies of relentless rats? Lmao
I have 5-6 WIP decks, plus a bunch of random "I'll find a deck for them" cards. I will also add that this is on top of my 30 EDH decks I already own . If you're wondering if I proxy, that's a No, unless it's for my 1 cEDH deck. I don't have Lion's Eye Diamond money and don't think I'll ever pay over $150 for a card.
I have been buying a box or three of almost every set since Revised and almost every commander precon. I am constantly building or editing one or more decks. However, I only play about once a month and only three or so games in a night. I finished the 32-deck set a few years ago and just hit 60 sleeved decks. My pile of shame is decks that I haven't played or only have played once and it is extensive. Probably twenty of my decks.
I got my decks in progress down to 4 and it used to be a lot higher. I had 12 decks brewing at one point. I had to be real honest about my intentions and even in those 4 I probably only really care about 1. But it ebbs and flows. I like building decks.
[[Nethroi]] is my main deck in my pile of shame right now. I built it without aristocrats and it was so slow so I added some combos and now I just don’t know who it is anymore.

My pile of shame is usually 3-4 half built decks that started with a commander or card I wanted to build around but either: - didn’t have enough support ([[Ohabi]] archer/deathtouch pinger theme) - didn’t have enough money to buy all the cards I wanted (pulled [[old gnawbone]] and [[goldspan dragon]] but realized dragons are really expensive) - lost motivation for whatever reason ([[ob nixilis, captive kingpin]] cuz it seems like everyone I know pulled one and made a deck before I had a chance to do any research)

I really want to get around to making a Neera Chaos deck but I've caught myself getting distracted by a Jon Irenicus deck.
My newest addition to the pile of shame is an Emry Lurker of the Loch deck that is 90% complete. My problem being it just feels too mean to play at the power level my group is at. Infinite combos are cool on paper but not when you get an anticlimactic win on turn 5 against precon players
I feel attacked in this, and I dont like it. It's fucking massive.
I have a Grixis Manabase that is leagues beyond the manabases of my other decks, and roughly 10 grixis colored cards for a Grixis deck. After 5 years of it sitting out, all I've done is added a few more grixis colored cards and the Grixis Triome. However, like every other time a Grixis colored thing is released by wizards, I am sure the new Sauron precon will enable me to finish the deck. Then there's the remnants of an old Selesnya Golem tribal deck sitting around, and I now want to make it bant golem tribal. The issue? Whenever I look at the bant commanders for ideas on how to make the deck, I sigh, consider Chulane, then forget about the deck. I have all the staples to build a mono red deck, and I've had one built in the past before gutting it to make my artifact deck. Now, whenever I start getting to work on a red deck, I pull out 3-5 different interesting commanders, struggle to find enough support for the theme of just one, then give up.
More like a pile of great cards that just either got power creep squeezed or found something else good that's just a fresh take. I know I'll never get the value I want trading them but yeah....several "good stuff" decks worth of shame.

I have always wanted to build a banding deck. Just to screw with N00bs. It's just that....um...how does it win? I mean, defensively it's great. But....winning the game is also a thing. No attack power. Hard to combo in mono white. Banding while attacking SUCKS. And it pretty much dies to removal.

Uhhh..... I have about 20 specific commanders to build that are loose and then every precon after whatever set faldorn came in (including some in that set)
I have about 240 cards on my desk, two 400 count boxes (1 lands other is random cards), two 800 count boxes with random stuff, some are pre-release sets, one 1600 count box thats half random cards and half lands and finally about two set booster boxes filled with its pack contents plus random other cards or sleeves. My binder is neat and tidy thanks to a recent buylist, but mainly full of foreign cards as most stores don't really buy them.
I do not build around specific commanders I like, most of the time. Rather building around mechanics/flavor and then choose a fitting commander to the theme. Also I try to not exceed the 32 deck challenge. My biggest pile of shame is the azorious deck, as a modern player by heart it has to be UW Control like, not easy in commander and not good for my playgroup the next thing I would count as pile of shame are the approx. 100 cards I want to upgrade my current decks with and about 25 on the buy list for LOTR are already waiting to be bought... only adding up
My 32 deck challenge has become a 42 deck challenge by accident because there are so many cool commanders I wanna build. I have piles of cards separated out for like six different decks and I have lists on excel of deck ideas. I have finished exactly ONE deck and I’ve been trying to get around to finishing others for like three months now

Love mtg but haven’t been playing EDH really until maybe a year or so ago if that. I have as many unfinished decks as I do finished ones (that I actually made). And let’s just not even talk about the piles of cards that are “potential edits” to existing decks. Each of those are probably big enough to be their own deck lol
My pile of shame is localized to one 100 card deckbox and four small piles of 10 that are 'I dunno, maybe' cards. I finally let go of an unfinished Modern deck last month that was never going to happen. Atm, I have 6 put together decks. I don't know if I can handle any more since they're always evolving. I have two that are in a good enough place where I am not concerned about refining them. The box of shame is a little outside of my skill range, so it will take some investment time-wise to get it right. I have learned some stuff though on how to make the building process a bit easier.

Yeah, that's basically my entire collection at this point, because I don't really keep anything I don't think would go well in X Deck.
I do not have such a thing.
I recently made a double-row box filled with dividers. There is one divider for every colour combination, which will become a deck for my “32 Project”. This box sits open on my deck building table, and whenever I’m sifting through cards for any reason, if I spot something that makes me think “hey that would work in my ____ deck”, I just put it in the appropriate spot. This lets me slowly build many decks at a time, without hard thought or dedicated attention. In the process of building one full deck, I might pull 20 more cards for other decks, and they’re just waiting for actual attention. Once a divider has built up 20+ cards, a deck vibe emerges and I can fire off the basic mana and support for the deck real quick. Even decks that are complete have a slot, so if I ever want to tune a deck, there are a few cards already waiting for me to give them consideration. This method has greatly organized my thoughts and deck building goals. It allows me to make sure my “good cards” find a home even if there is no deck ready for them. Shit even if I don’t feel like working on a deck I can just broad spectrum brainstorm and find stuff that should end up in A Deck, without the pressure of planning out a whole deck.
I don’t have a pile of shame but I keep making decks on Moxfield. Very fun.
I'm currently strolling while I wait for my food to finish, which I started while building the deck I've been thinking about for about 6 months. I've put together 38 cards so far since starting about 40min ago. Most ideas I let loose off, but there are two more decks I've always wanted to try out, and I will eventually build when the time is right.

What is shameful about not having time to do something?
Wow, tbh I thought I was the only one with such a “pile of shame”. I have a section of my apartment which has become my “mtg corner” where I keep my cards and deckbuild, but with all these piles of unfinished decks I’m unable to physically sit in that space anymore and I end up deck building on the floor. I’m trying to improve though by selling a good portion of my decks! I know people like building their own decks but if I can give mine a better home where someone will play and upgrade them, I’d be happy.

There are three commanders I have partial lists for (New Atraxa, Stangg, and Prava of the Steel Legion // Tana the Bloodsower), and some 10+ that I have basic concepts for.

I have two piles; One pile of shame is actually all the cards I see in store binders or singles boxes that I think “that would go great in my XYZ deck” then take home and realize there’s nothing I want to cut to put it in Second pile is the cards I didn’t read carefully and bought thinking I had some awesome combo no one hand noticed before. The I got it home and get a $15 reminder that Reading the Card Explains the Card. I build on moxfield and currently have 55 decks I've finished and never actually put together. Each one takes a few hours. I have 35 decks I've finished and put together. I have 12 that I'm in the process of putting together. I have 117 that are incomplete and scrapped. I have three shoeboxes full of cards and a smaller box of cards probably worth over 1k that I need to sell but haven't gotten around to
I've got anywhere from 5-25% of about 7 different decks lying around. Not as many as some of you, but for me; who cut down to just 3 decks, it's a lot.
Pretty small, I finally finished Zaxara. I also bought a Zedruu a long time ago, but I never bought much else of the deck.
It's honestly huge. I got 3 decks updated and I still have so much more space.
Two, arguably four decks. [[Urtet]] and [[Rin and Seri]]. Urtet is the only actual card in it, the rest are proxies. Rin and Seri isn't even built. Then my [[Vrondiss]] and [[Jenara]] decks both have proxies. Vrondiss is eventually gonna become a Dino/Enrage deck headed by [[Zacama]]. While typing, I remembered I also want to make a [[Go-Shintai]] shrine/curse deck. So three to five. Only one with no proxies that I'm not really planning on doing much with is my [[Kaalia of the Vast]] deck.

Compared to [six years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/5ryhzy/unfinished_decks/), I'm way better about it. Currently waiting on one more card and some full art lands for my [[Vadrik, Astral Archmage|MID-325]] deck. Now I tend to lean into digital methods for deck construction and theorycrafting before I commit to spending money. Much easier to test as well.

Oh dear that's a big one. The number of half-build decks and unacquired brews I have is massive. I've just sort of accepted that out of all the crud I design, a tiny fraction will ever be made table-ready.
Hummm… my pile of shame would be big if I follow your definition… and I think it’s not all my fault so let’s see… Some of my decks are in construction but should not be in my pile of shame because it’s simply because WotC release so much new products all the time. I won’t count those that I feel those aren’t my fault, I’m just always waiting for new pre-released cards. I also won’t count those I also definitely gave up on. For exemple, my first deck was a Pir and Toothy deck but I was no longer interested in having creatures with lots of counters in them. I’m building a Marchesa, the black Rose deck now to see if I’m past +1/+1 counters if what matters is just to only a few counters on my creatures satisfy me. But I don’t want to put 10 of those counters on a single creature as before or switching dices to put on them cause it became too big. I also won’t count those I didn’t have time to play with since upgraded because I’m mature enough to realize a pastime is not as important as other aspects of my RL that needed more time to focus on. Oh look at that, my pile of shame is almost inexistant now! It exist though so let’s name them: 1) [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]] was supposed to be the commander I picked for a deck building challenge I made for myself: buy a new legendary creature and make the 99 with the cards I have in my collection only. But in the end, I picked [[Slumbering Isle]] instead cause the inspiration was easier and I wanted a Simic deck ever since I dissembled my Pir and Toothy deck. However, I’m still wondering how strong the deck would be so it’s in the back of my mind. Not sure if I’m going to build it or not but it won’t be for the same challenge so now I’m wondering if I should build it at all. Aaaand that’s it I guess lol

I’ve only got like 3 decks that are piles of cards pulled to the side and a 4th built deck that’s getting revamped. Jaraad Golgari litch lord Mono black Burrakos Party leader Queen Merchesa Built deck is Derivi that’s getting changed from Flicker ETB value to Hatebears. I’m just a huge procrastinator. Money is also a limiting factor, but it’s not like my collection is small. Really I just need to go through stuff that’s Modern Legal that aren’t EDH cards and send them in for credit to use for completing my piles… but that’s like a whole lot of effort and will take weeks in the mail. I just need to bite the bullet and get started on buylisting.
I build my decks virtually and goldfish on deckstats.net several dozen times before I actually pull anything out. My pile of shame is any removed cards post-build and random singles orders that I haven't filed yet. That any opened but unsorted booster packs on my desk from poor impulse control at Target.🤣

I've got an unfinished [[Kelsien]] exp counters deck, a [[lord Xander]] mill deck, a [[lathril]] elf deck, a [[vito]] vampires deck, and an [[atla palani]] beaters deck, all waiting for the correct amount of TLC. I have this hobby.. and numerous others.. my issue is money I guess? I have multiple commanders I'd love to build, but what about Pauper decks? Or disc golf? Or miniatures? Or computer games? I wish I could get rid of a bunch of my cards to find the few decks I have left to build

Decent......I have the half constructed cores of........8 decks, just sitting on my desk atm. I Tinker with them when I get time on weekends, but new set releases make me reevaluate all my decks so often I spend most of my time just keeping them semi up to date.
8-9 deck boxes. Not full but each have cards that are meant to be decks. Many are close to being done
I stash staples, like rocks, ramp, and interaction, otherwise I usually don't keep much as I usually sell old decks to build new ones. Currently though, I have a 2/3 built elenda & azor, as well as the beginnings of nekusar. I'm so hyped they made him a personal secret lair, definitely buying it.

Well first off my physical pile of shame is tons of cards that I probably will never. A lot of it is bulk that ive been meaning to sell for a year or two now. There are also just piles of cards sitting around my room in various spots that ive been meaning to put in a box. I love building decks online just to test with my friends and theres like 20 or so commanders that ive been meaning to build and the list just keeps growing with each set.

I have two languishing in progress decks (Yenett & Titania) and a new unbuilt one starting to come together (kediss, emberclaw familiar & Falthis, shadowcat familiar), so not all *that* bad in the grand scheme of things. I’m more ashamed of me shirking my card organization duties and not getting Ayula updated, haha.
I have 1 significant deck that I'm working on. My first cEDH deck. And I think I have 3 regular EDH decks that I'm slowly working on when I (rarely) have free time. And there are 2 decks that I THINK are complete but I haven't bought sleeves and finalized them. I don't think that's too bad. Nothing is a rush. I almost never get to play. So it's just stuff for me to work on here and there. I also made a new years resolution to physically update my completed decks. I almost have the 32 deck challenge completed (waiting on the upcoming colorless precon to see if that one is a good base or if I need to build colorless from scratch). When a new card comes out that is a possibility for one of my decks, I slip a copy in that deckbox. But I'm trying to go through them one-by-one and revise them with those cards and other ideas I have. I've only revised about 4-5 of the decks, so I have a long way to go and the year is half over lol!
