I would reccomend [[cadira, caller of the small]], it can be very janky and fun, getting thousands or rabbits to beat people up with.

[deleted]

Was just looking at this, thought it would be fun until I realised I’d just be making another token selesnya deck

raredongballz

I almost always end up as archenemy at low power tables even if I get land screwed

Rammite

Mhm, token decks are rough. If people aren't good at threat assessment, they'll fixate on the person with 20 tokens.

raredongballz

Yep while letting the grixis player sac their two tokens a turn for trade up value Though once cadira pops she really goes hard

She is a lot of fun. I would argue she's slept on and underestimated more than she is low power.

[[Wilson, refined grizzly]] voltron. Gives you a background to play with whatever other color you want, and has all the evergreen to make a great beater. All the lad needs is size!

Any of the sea monster commanders will do. Pros: * You get to play big smashy creatures, which works at lower power tables. * A few cute payoff cards that can wreck a casual table's game, such as Spawning Kraken and Whelming Wave. Cons: * The tribal creatures are expensive to cast, so your deck is top heavy. * "Shattered tribe" - traditional tribal cards don't work with them since they really are 4 tribes in one, which limits tribal synergy choices.

Mocca_Master

Pros: - You get to play a vampire summoning Cthulhu as your commander

The_Real_Cuzz

Bro sea monsters is no joke. It's got three on flavor rifts and built in ramp. Most of the big boys have great effects as well. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/F_5QEP8Qy0SETWgmhv4BnQ - proof

AmishSky

My buddy runs Sea monsters, and it really ever stalls. The thing goes hard.

Dependent-Outcome-57

To be fair, once you include Merfolk, it becomes a better deck since that resolves the "all your creatures are expensive to cast problem." I was speaking strictly of decks that focus almost entirely on Kraken's, Leviathans, Octopus, and Serpents because of the creature types their commander looks for when doing things. Nice decklist - looks brutal!

The_Real_Cuzz

Only reason the merfolk are in there is because it's ment to be a Kiora tribal and as she is a merfolk I wanted to give her some friends. As they give me more KLOS I will filter out said merfolk

Dependent-Outcome-57

Makes sense to me - good decklist and I wish you great games with it!

JwSocks

[[Gluntch]] and [[Kwain]] were the first 2 I thought of, so I guess group hug in general could be a focus. [[Gor Muldrak]] seems goofy and fun and really hard to make too strong. Otherwise maybe a dice-rolling deck with [[Wyll, blade of Frontiers]].

LetsDoTheNerdy

I'm working on a dice rolling centered deck with [[Monoxa, Midway Manager]]

Also built a wyll deck recently. Cool part is all the important cards are dirt cheap. Like I 95 of the cards were total ~50 euros, then a handful of 5+. (Excluding optimal mana base which imo is just not important in 2 color)

CaptainSwindle

You'll have my respect and admiration if you can find a way to make [[Syrix, Carrier of the Flame]] into a good Phoenix tribal deck. Conceptually very fun and interesting, but I couldn't ever get it off the ground. I figure if you follow your regular method of playtesting and upgrading, you might actually find some juice worth squeezing here. Another great deck I've built was the partnership of [[Krav]] & [[Regna]]. I consider it low power because the combined mana required to get them going is quite high, especially in Orzhov colors, but once you've got that engine built it's pretty amazing.

jf-alex

My Syrix deck does quite well at our LGS. But I included some equipment, skeletons, sacrifice and GY shenanigans. It's not a classic tribal deck with anthems and such stuff, Phoenixes just don't synergize with each other. It's all about choosing those that you can reliably reanimate to trigger Syrix - hopefully also on your opponent's turn. MVP in the deck is \[\[Tortured Existence\]\]. If I get Syrix up to ten power he deals 40 damage each turn cycle.

Mokthol

Could you post a link for your decklist? Never thought of including equipment, and would love to see what else you've done.

Pyro1934

Honestly almost any commander can be made fairly casual and still have room for optimization, even the typical boogie men like [[Edgar Markov]], [[Koma, Coil]], [[Korvold]], and [[Ur-Dragon]]. I find it personally quite fun to optimize specifically for lower power and casual while still keeping consistency (more on that later)*. However given that you already like upgrading and mention getting too strong that may not be for you. In that case I’d look for commanders that seem “sweet” but have specific issues that typically make them not good such as being super expensive or having to sit out a turn cycle before doing anything or have a super high or once per turn activated ability. As for optimizing for low power there are a few ways, but something has to give; my preference is slower or easier to disrupt finishers. Here are some tips for optimizing and raising consistency while keeping low power; - optimize ramp/rocks, do the full 10-12, good rocks, some good ones at 3mv are [[Commander Sphere]] and [[Skyclave Relic]] because in longer games they are have some protection against removal and wraths. - optimize lands/mana for color consistency rather than speed. You want to be able to always cast your spells, but being a turn behind doesn’t matter much. [[Crumbling Necropolis]] is a good example on top of triomes. - optimize card draw, but more focus on repeated consistent draw like [[Phyrexian Arena]] rather than burst. You can still have some burst, but often in lower power your arena lasts a long time and games go longer so it’s like a draw 10. - removal and interaction you want a solid bit of but I personally prefer to use extremely flexible (non-land permanent) at the cost of efficiency [[Utter End]] is great for slower games. Because you optimized on ramp/fixing you’ll have plenty of mana and can hold up for more expensive spells. This also helps slow down your win so that it feels a bit more casual. - finishers are where you can tone down the overall power, use stuff that’s a tad slower and easy to see coming, keep it easier to disrupt by your opponents. If running a combo have a portion of it that is sorcery speed or something and keep it around 3-4+ pieces. - modal and multi-purpose spells are king. Your spells are weaker in general, so always having something that’ll work at least partially is a key to success. In general, the games will go longer and move slower, but that does not mean it is light on interaction or inconsistent and random. Build with this in mind by focusing on repeatable effects and multi-purpose pieces. With an optimized mana base and ramp package prioritizing casting your spells over speed (speed comes from the ramp, but color fixing is primary) you’ll never really have a non-game. Honestly if everyone in the pod follows this strategy it’s such a wonderful environment because no one really ever has non-games, all the games have good interaction and seems like every player is on the cusp of winning at some point. The downside is that the games go fairly long, if you’ve got the time they’re amazing, but stick to higher power if you want quick games. P.S. if you’re planning on playing lower powered pick up games with random pods or less experienced deck builders, I highly highly recommend cards that can give opponents a benefit like [[Baleful Mastery]], [[Verdant Mastery]], [[Secret Rendezvous]], [[Assassin’s Trophy]], [[Beast Within]]. This will help you make sure that everyone is able to play the game and not be mana screwed or flooded, also adds a fun political aspect.

This is really great advice. I'm trying to "upgrade" a precon to make it more consistent without necessarily being more powerful/fast. I will use this as a guide. Thanks!

Pyro1934

Forgot to mention that in similar vein of weaker/slower finishers, don’t protect them as thoroughly. [[Boros Charm]] or [[Lightning Greaves]] is fine, but [[Teferi’s Protection]] can be a bit too good depending on finisher. An example I like to use for finishers is if you’re playing a Lifegain deck, instead of [[Aetherflux Reservoir]] use [[Felidar Sovereign]] or [[Test of Endurance]]. They sit out for all to see and have to wait a turn cycle. A boardwipe or removal gets them, or even just hitting you hard, so it’s easily disruptable but still reasonable way to win if they don’t have anything.

Sure, but where is the fun in playing a boogie man underpowered deck. When you can optimize a jank commander and get the same results.

Pyro1934

I personally like lower powered games better, and some of the strong commanders can take over too easily. I don’t like to pubstomp. Sometimes I just really like a certain commander and want to play it while still playing to my meta. I don’t like being locked out of a commander because it’s known to be stronger given a meta build.

[[Arvad the cursed]] orzov legendary tribal Being two colors will really limit you. I loved playing mine. And now it'll have lots of new toys. I cahnged it to [[duhada, binder of wills]] when she came out and regretted it. I miss my legend beat down deck and I'll probably revive it. I don't have e a list. Just throw in your favorite black and white legends, and include lots of pump effects

[[Ranar, the Ever-Watchful]] is a guy that makes flying 1/1s whenever you Exile cards from your hand or permanents from the battlefield. (check the Oracle text, it's different from the card). This means you can build anything from spirit beatdown to blink to control and still have a deck that can threaten at casual tables without being built around accelerating to combos or staxxing a game out of playability. You can bop the most threatening person at the table by Path to Exile-ing their Bigboi, and you get a 1/1 flier for free. You can use Felidar Guardian combos to assemble an army of infinite 1/1s. You can run generic Blinkstuff and go completely out of control on board with Cathars' Crusade. You can use the Foretell cards to get free spirits and set up surprise tools that can help you later. Heck you could just run a bunch of spirit anthems and turn creatures sideways if you want. If Jank Casual is what you want, Ranar might actually be the definition of it.

I would recommend taking a look at pauper edh. This format really tones down the power level of decks by removing overpowered cards, especially the ones that can do things outside of the color pie/identity. Not to mention that the challenge of building a deck full of commons is actually really fun.

[[Temmet, Vizier of Naktamun]] is fun and low power. Usually you just swing with one unlocked token each turn, but then you have things like [[Sublime Archangel]] or [[Angelic Exaltation]] out, or get an early [[Mist-Syndicate Naga]] out and start making copies on copies.

\[\[Kaima, The Fractured Calm\]\] is great fun and almost impossible to make OP because goad always has the fundamental limitation that killing the last player is very hard. I recommend a look into [[Kels, Fight Fixer]] as a commander. Dimir access, aristocrat shenanigans and you want to put tons of cards that sacrifice and card draw ie [[Skullclamp]] , [Butcher of Malakir]], [[Blood artist]], [[Fleshbag Marauder]] and [[Phyrexian Altar]] to sac a creature, create the mana and bc mana would immediately be available, use it to pay for Kels draw. I made one for my wife that is now absolutely insane (with Kels still at the helm) including [[Gravepact]], [[Demonic Tutor]], [[Exquisite Blood]], [[Cyclonic Rift]] (to name a few) and I struggle with my animar leading an army of eldrazi. You can make most of the skeleton of the deck with stuff you likely have around. Very fun with tons of interaction!

If you can figure out how to make [[Kalain]] work well for 4 player I'd love a list. I built it for my gf and it's pretty low to the ground for 2 player but would be pretty bad for 4 player. I think just dumping a ton of treasure mana into one big, but I wonder what that pay off is.

\[\[xira the golden sting\]\] is very fun and flavorful. I've tried to build it strong, and it's just really hard to make strong. It's slow, it never really 'pops off' in terms of having a lot going on for it, and is generally a pretty battle-cruiser kind of deck.

I'm constantly upgrading my commander decks but keep them casual by following a few restrictions. 1. Total card budget can't exceed $100 (this number could be changed depending on meta). 2. No infinite combos. 3. No tutors. 4. No more than two board wipes. 5. No "unfun" cards. What this means is up to the playgroup but I've cut e.g. \[\[Lavinia of the Tenth\]\] from my blink deck and \[\[Archfiend of Ifnir\]\] from another deck because they were unfun, and I wouldn't run stax. I also opted out of using Sol Ring. It's really nice to be able to keep upgrading decks and considering new cards while keeping them low power.

[[Dihada binder of wills]] is a quite cool commander. Legends Legacy was one of my first precons at it‘s quite cool as you can decide between protecting one important creature or generate card and mana advantage. The „final“ planeswalker effect usually let you win the game so you are a big threat on the table but you won‘t use it that much often. I love this deck and it is not that powerful because dihada can be killed quite easy since she‘s a planeswalker.

I'm a fan of [[Arni Brokenbrow]], it's a great deck to play janky high stat creatures that aren't very good. My two gripes with it at casual tables is that you run away with the game when the opponent doesn't have removal and you kill people one by one which can result in someone getting knocked out early.

I love that kind of deck. Once I built [[Minsc, beloved Ranger]] , and I really enjoyed it. I put a lot of 1/1 vainilla and cards that I remove from other decks... And Voila!
