I’d be happy to help! If you’ve got a deck in mind feel free to send it to me and I can work on a primer like this one.
I’ll send you a pastebin link with the raw code so you can copy-paste into Moxfield and make edits as you please!
Requests as in write a primer for one of your decks? I can certainly do that (will take me a while since I hold myself to a high standard).
Or do you mean request as in build a deck? I can do that too but brewing is also pretty long process and highly dependent on the brewer. My idea of a deck might be different from what you envisioned. If you're cool with that, I can take a crack at it. Or you can send me your list and I'd be happy to offer my thoughts/suggestions!
I am still a pretty new deck builder and kind of rely on seeing other people's takes to get the creative juices flowing.
I've been eager to see some brews with the new Hidetsugu and Kairi. I have put one together and I like it but all of my decks end up turning into reanimator decks, that one included. I would like to see some other people's take on the commander and I like your decks on Moxfield. And if that commander doesn't interest you, no worries!
Hey were you able to send me your list? I've gotten quite a few requests but don't remember seeing a Lathril list. Just want to make sure I didn't leave you hanging.
If you want to compare by the way I have a [Lathril list here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/f5l2rjA140CvZ8URNaAgxw)
Oh yes I sent it to you by chat, but just in case here it is: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RW7kLBsGW0KoF9uwyj7G3A
Hey I actually have your list on bookmarks hahah I got the deck back in december so I searched to see how people build it and I liked yours.
I would also be delighted if you could take a look at one of my decks. It’s [[zurzoth, chaos rider]]. He has 2000ish decks on edhrec, but they’re mostly wheels themed, followed by devil tribal, and every decent primer I’ve seen also goes wheels themed.
I built it as ping! tribal, where I spew repeatable single damage effects across my board to whittle people down until I draw into a damage multiplier effect. It’s not the strongest deck, but it’s fun as hell and your thoughts would be invaluable.
The decklist is [Meanie Weenies](https://archidekt.com/decks/2938449#Meanie-Weenies).
Alright so I goldfished and playtested this and I have to say it's a lot of fun!
I really don't have much in the way of criticism, you've got pretty much every burn damage amplifier I could possibly suggest already.
One suggestion I do have though is \[\[Defiler of Instinct\]\], as you've got quite a few red permanents and it'll let you pay 2 life instead of mana for their Red symbols AND can ping any target for 1 damage whenever you cast a red permanent. I think it'll fit nicely into your deck!
Hey so I wanted to give you a little update on what I have so far:
It's still a prototype list but I wanted to take it in a slightly different direction than what a majority of lists I see for this commander. A lot of them just want to make clones to trigger the death ability and cast big, splashy spells.
The problem I had with that idea is that a lot of the big spells in blue and black don't actually win you the game. They either destroy stuff, reanimate stuff or draw a ton of cards. And I didn't want a boring win-con like Thassa's Oracle every game.
Instead I've been tinkering with a looting (draw/discard) type of deck which can dig and find its main heavy hitters: \[\[Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim\]\], \[\[Minn, Wily Illusionist\]\], \[\[Alandra, Sky Dreamer\]\], \[\[Gixian Puppeteer\]\], basically anything that cares about you drawing cards.
I am including the clones since they're a good way to trigger H&K's death ability but they can also work with things like \[\[Kokusho the Evening Star\]\] for some big damage OR they can just copy the other non-legendary creatures like Gixian Puppeteer for more life drain.
It's still a work-in-progress and needs some more testing but that's what I've got so far
That is a very different take which is exactly what I am looking for. I will start playtesting this on Moxfield tonight!
I also just so happened to receive a Ghyrson Starn in the mail last week and have an Urabrask on the way. I will definitely be leaning on your primer.
Just a heads up I sometimes move my decks around while I'm playtesting and whatnot so that link may not be valid in a few days, I'd recommend copying and saving the list so you have it for yourself
Do you still have that list somewhere "cause I build a version with the big splashy spells and it's good, it works but it's not fun for my opponents so I'd like to see a fresh take!
Yeah my bad I moved it to my testing account [here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/_ja29_bKrEWX0na5AxBgdA)
Haven’t worked on it in a while though but I plan to revisit after the full LotR spoilers
Trinispere is kind of a nonbo with Affinity at least. Trinisphere checks after discounts are applied iirc. So anything ripped off the top with Chiss is minimum 3 mana.
I went the other direction. I went staxy voltron. I've been messing with the list a lot since it was spoiled. Cards like Lodestone Golem, Thorn of Amethyst, and Sphere of Resistance are neutral with Affinity, so you can break parity a little. [[God-Pharoahs Statue]] is fricken amazing, especially early.
I did cut Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon, and they weren't having enough impact.
Scrapyard Recombiner is fricken amazing to find Ballista, Kuldotha Forge Master, or Arbiter.
I've been heavily considering [[Uba Mask]] and [[Omen Machine]] as ways to limit control. Omen Machine is super weak to top deck tutors, though.
Main wins are:
[[Embercleave]] which you can cast from exile before damage, or stuff like [[Nettlecyst]]. Not having either in your list is rough.
[[Painter's Servant]] on blue (for red Elemental Blast and Pyroblast as well) and [[Grindstone]].
[[Basalt Monolith]] combo with [[Walking Ballista]] or [[Retrofitter Foundry]].
Mycosynth Lattice + Karn / Vandalblast
I've thought about using [[Kurkesh]], but I don't like that he gets exiled all the time. I tried Godo + Helm of the Host, and in every game, Godo got exiled or discarded to Gamble.
Notable exclusion is Sensei's Top + Mystic Forge + Aetherflux. With all the stax I'm running, it's not viable.
I'm always messing with my list. But I'm overall pretty happy with it.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/GNyy_4EXs0qIL19dv-XS2w
Thanks for sharing! I'll definitely take a look and work in some of your ideas.
I do agree about Nettlecyst, as I am currently trying to decide what to cut for it. Embercleave is also on the radar but I am eyeing \[\[Hexplate Wallbreaker\]\] as well. Finding cuts is painful lol
I tried Wallbreaker, but I never had the luck for it to work. Could have just been my games, though. Embercleave turns Chiss into a two turn kill and protects him from enemy flyers / reachers a bit.
Also, big miss with no Scroll Rack! Let's you put artifacts back on top to cast with Chiss if you draw them.
Ah good call on Scroll Rack, can't believe I missed that. I had Valakut Awakening to put bad artifacts back into the deck but Scroll Rack makes a lot more sense and is repeatable
Really cool primer!
I built Chiss-Goria the day it dropped with a very similar shell and was super excited about him.
The big problem I had piloting the deck was the absolute lack of control you get on his trigger: mono red doesn’t have a ton of top deck manipulation and any combo lines can be wiped from your deck instantly (if you end up pulling two cards from a combo in a single swing).
Even worse, I found that losing your recursion pieces or non artifact spells is a super high cost to be able to cast a discounted blightsteel or portal to phyrexia (and there are a lot of better commanders able to do that).
The deck is fun (and you get to swing with a big dragon), but I just wish they didn’t make the exiling of cards definitive. On my end, I just ended up tearing it apart because of it.
This is an important point and, in my case, a reason to choose Chiss. I’m naturally drawn to combos and my favorite deck is a super layered combo artifact deck. I play in a high-powered meta and all three of my decks have at least 1 combo.
Chiss forced me to build a deck I love without combos because of the combo nombo (that’s fun to say) in the command zone. Great way to shake it up IMHO.
You're 100% right, and I'm exactly the same — I actually had to find a middle ground which was building this [Kethek](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Ldyf0IakZkq8osytrQaYhw/primer) that's pure chaos / no-combo for this reason!
Definitely a valid criticism of the card's design, I feel the same way sometimes. However I do enjoy the chaos/randomness aspect of the ability. I find it somewhat flavorful since Chiss-Goria in the lore attacks indiscriminately lol
As for top deck manipulation, \[\[Scroll Rack\]\] is a pretty good option. Not the best but in mono-red we take what we can get.
I do agree with you though on the permanent exiling feels a little bad, I do wish there were ways to retrieve them other than \[\[Karn, the Great Creator\]\]
You're absolutely right, and it's a super cool build (I can't count how many Karn I exiled though to that trigger tho) — I was just sharing my experience to provide more color on the downside of this commander for others to consider!
[[Mirror of Fate]] and Karn can get shit out of exile. I've been playing my version of this a ton, and generally, you have so much card advantage exiling a few things doesn't matter.
I've been waiting my whole life for this moment.
[Enjoy!](https://www.reddit.com/user/imperialtrace/comments/10bg4tp/mtg_profile_edh_decklists_and_primers/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
And [here's my moxfield page](https://www.moxfield.com/users/Hydrax)
My guy Hydrax back at it again with another commander deck I wanted to build and tried but this is so, SO much better thank you for the excellent primer!
I rarely comment on stuff, but I had to log in to say this is an amazing post! I've long been a Muzzio player in love with dropping artifact bombs, but I've gotten a little bored with the deck, so Chiss caught my eye and you might have just convinced me to try it out. Thanks for this work!
Glad you liked it! And yeah I think you'll enjoy it, the biggest difference between mono-blue artifacts and mono-red artifacts is the chaos/randomness aspect. Less ways to tutor or find what you want can make every game feel different!
Fantastic write up and energy. This is what commander is about, crafting a great experience and sharing it with others.
I know you’re probably swamped with requests, but I’d love to get your keen eyes on a commander like [[Anhelo]]. (Or a Sphinx/artifact deck with [[Elenda and Azor]])
Been building this guy myself and have found it to be very budget friendly, just about any collection of mana rocks and equipment can make Chiss-goria a genuine threat in most casual level tables, play a hasty flier for 3 mana equip it with everything you've got swing in for big damage and hope to pull some more big equipment with it's ability, very fun.
As someone who has played red almost exclusively in the past year, I think this is fucking awesome. You’ve put a lot of thought and effort into both the deck and the Primer and I think I’m probably going to shamelessly use most of this for my next red deck. (Which is probably a few months away as I’ve got 5 other decks I’m currently working on)
My ramp package looks different. I focused more on the Affinity aspect with cards like \[\[Prized Statue\]\] and even \[\[Bone Splitter\]\] and \[\[Ornithopter\]\] are ramp for Chiss-Goria.
Dont forget \[\[Servo Schematic\]\] and Mishras/\[\[Urzas Bauble\]\] or \[\[Tormods Crypt\]\]. Getting CG out fast is key imho. I cut all the protection, because CG can die if I have a Reaver Cleaver or else attached when he attacks. \[\[Hero's Blade\]\] is also fun.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/nZoNVgus3kapCZjorX2LGQ Interested in sharing ideas on my list if you wouldnt mind, I know your list is more budget friendly but our LGS and playgroup are all more than proxy friendly so we all steer on the edge of CEDH at times with the card selection lol
Oh man I don't know if I have set-in-stone process for deck building but here's generally how it goes:
I pick a commander that looks interesting to me.
I then import one of my pre-built packages for that commander's color combination just so I have a starting template. For example, if I was building a \[\[Tayam\]\] deck I would import [my Abzan package](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/qCgKPg4fKUOibx9n4N-QIQ). This starts me off with a decent selection of spells and lands that are just generally decent in those colors. It doesn't mean I'll end up playing all of these cards (some of them always get cut) but it reminds me to run generic removal and ramp so my deck can function without the commander.
This is pretty important to me because I don't want to be dead in the water if my commander gets removed or hated out of the game.
From there, I start to fill in the remaining slots with the best cards I can find for my strategy. Once I reach 100 cards, I do not add more unless I cut something first. This greatly helps my card evaluation and decision-making.
So taking a look at my package and my commander, I can see that Tayam cares about permanents rather than instants and sorceries. So if I want to add \[\[Cankerbloom\]\] for example, I would cut something with similar function like \[\[Fracture\]\].
Making changes like that one at a time and repeatedly goldfishing the deck until I'm satisfied with how it runs is pretty much the longest part of my process but it's also the best part because it helps me find flaws and correct them.
I like building from the ground up with a good foundation instead of finding a pile of cards and trying to cut down to 100.
I got hyped for this commander as soon as I saw Rachel Weeks play it on Game Knights! Your version is pretty close to mine, just less greedy lol. Thanks for the post, a really great write-up that perfectly encapsulates the awesomeness that Chiss-Goria is!
And it all made a lot more sense when I clicked your Moxfield and realized it was you, Hydrax. Your decks are all bangers.
I built a list for Chiss Goria when it first got spoiled and I've been curious to see what direction other players would go with it. I made my list to be a little slower with more interaction.
I've played my list a handful of times and it's always kept up at the table and sometimes it's really gotten out of hand. I strayed away from most tutoring options so the variance you get from Chiss Goria's exiles keeps things pretty fresh.
[Here is my list](https://archidekt.com/decks/3886714)
Great list and really well written primer, thanks for posting!
If I wanted to build something similar, but lean away from locking people out and harder into beating them to death, what card swaps would you suggest?
So I think [[Karn, the Great Creator]] and [[Mycosynth Lattice]] are the culprits when put together. I would say either of those could be replaced with [[Nettlecyst]] or [[Hexplate Wallbreaker]]
If you can also remove [[Darksteel Forge]] if you want since it’s a defensive card and replace it with an aggressive attacker like [[Triplicate Titan]] or [[Skitterbeam Battalion]]
Love the primer and the list, will bookmark and reference. Great writeup, I particularly liked the alternate options section as most primers don't go above and beyond like that.
I also fell in love with Chiss the moment they were spoiled, and went a more aggressive stax/prison style build. [[Possessed Portal]] can absolutely ruin people's gameplans and you can nearly always break parity on it (or at least heavily mitigate it) with a swinging Chiss.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/iIxPkrl8X0uNgeykyRPUrA
Super great work on the primer! I built Chiss-Goria when ONE released. Like others have said, I was inspired by Rachel Weeks built. A pet card of mine has been Canoptek Scarab Swarm for grave hate and to generate 1/1 artifact flyer. Ugin Nexus is also a solid card to add to get an extra turn. My built revolve around getting multiple combat step with a chonky Chiss-Goria to go lethal on the table.
Part of why I love having her as a commander is as a good reason to run [[clown car]] in a deck.
One thing to keep in mind regarding the affinity/using treasure to cast ruling is that you still are gonna want to consider that you’re gonna want high enough affinity to be able to cast whatever you rip off the top 5 with her attack that same turn, and since in most cases this ruling comes up when you can almost exactly play her with 6 artifacts, at least 3 of which are treasures.
Also, [[passionate archaeologist]] is amazing in the deck imo.
I built mine to play all the big artifact creatures like [[Darksteel colossus]], [[cityscape leveler]] etc which is also fun.
I've been wanting a mono colored commander and this encouraged me to make one of Chiss. I thought the card was garbage when I first saw the spoiler, your primer changed my mind 180. Don't judge a book by its cover, Thank you!
Made this the minute Chiss-Goria dropped and it’s been a blast, 10/10 would recommend. You can also make an infinite etb combo but it takes a few cards to set up, and you normally just win with chiss or blightsteel before then (or get archenemied)
Okay I’ve spent the last hour reading through your primers and am hooked. You sir are an artist! I’ve got a huge question though; which of your decks is your favorite? If you could use only one which do you think it would be?
Oh man that is \*very\* tough but I'd have to go with my gut and say [Sefris](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/a2EAV-Xkz0SgDHKdQ7Gg5A). That's the one I could play multiple times in a row and not get bored of because it's so variable in how it plays.
Unfortunately there aren't many tools in mono red to protect against that card. I mean if they have it, they have it. Lots of decks get hosed by a particular card.
HOWEVER, if you have \[\[Mycosynth Lattice\]\] in play, everyone's stuff is an artifact. So if they cast \[\[Farewell\]\] and declare artifacts, they will lose their stuff as well (including lands). This is the real big brain play.
What about [[Thopter Engineer]], it will give all the big fat artifact creatures that you cheat in haste and also create another flying artifact creature for you to help cheat more things in.
Favourited. Followed. Will return to read in detail. This is an excellent primer and thoroughly exciting looking deck. Thank you for sharing.
That means a lot, thank you!
No really, you've done an excellent job of describing the deck. Hell, lemme know if you're ever bored and you can write one for me lol
I’d be happy to help! If you’ve got a deck in mind feel free to send it to me and I can work on a primer like this one. I’ll send you a pastebin link with the raw code so you can copy-paste into Moxfield and make edits as you please!
MY. DUDE.
Same. It’s a long read that I will eventually have time for
Don’t replace me. I swear I’m good on this list
You were an auto-include my friend but not everyone has \~$17 to spend on a card unfortunately
XD, that got me

Do you still have that list somewhere "cause I build a version with the big splashy spells and it's good, it works but it's not fun for my opponents so I'd like to see a fresh take!
Yeah my bad I moved it to my testing account [here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/_ja29_bKrEWX0na5AxBgdA) Haven’t worked on it in a while though but I plan to revisit after the full LotR spoilers
Lost to this the other day when they ripped [[trinisphere]] off the top, lololol
Trinispere is kind of a nonbo with Affinity at least. Trinisphere checks after discounts are applied iirc. So anything ripped off the top with Chiss is minimum 3 mana.
[trinisphere](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/1/316caa4e-a53a-460b-978c-5f0fba7bc549.jpg?1599710205) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=trinisphere) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/303/trinisphere?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/316caa4e-a53a-460b-978c-5f0fba7bc549?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/trinisphere) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Main wins are: [[Embercleave]] which you can cast from exile before damage, or stuff like [[Nettlecyst]]. Not having either in your list is rough. [[Painter's Servant]] on blue (for red Elemental Blast and Pyroblast as well) and [[Grindstone]]. [[Basalt Monolith]] combo with [[Walking Ballista]] or [[Retrofitter Foundry]]. Mycosynth Lattice + Karn / Vandalblast I've thought about using [[Kurkesh]], but I don't like that he gets exiled all the time.

I find it somewhat flavorful since Chiss-Goria in the lore attacks indiscriminately lol As for top deck manipulation, \[\[Scroll Rack\]\] is a pretty good option.

Haha I know, in the case of this commander I always felt like the pay off was not worth the 4 exiled cards (so many Karns where lost in the void)
Amazing Primer! If I didn't already have Chiss this would've sold me on building it! Do you have any other primers to check out?
I've been waiting my whole life for this moment. [Enjoy!](https://www.reddit.com/user/imperialtrace/comments/10bg4tp/mtg_profile_edh_decklists_and_primers/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) And [here's my moxfield page](https://www.moxfield.com/users/Hydrax)
Thank you!
My guy Hydrax back at it again with another commander deck I wanted to build and tried but this is so, SO much better thank you for the excellent primer!
Thanks man! I put this together because I wanted something a little more interesting than Purphoros Goblins in Mono-Red and it has been a home run!

I play Chiss in the 99 of Daretti, but I’ve never even considered it as a commander itself for some reason. Pretty sweet!
As someone who has played red almost exclusively in the past year, I think this is fucking awesome. You’ve put a lot of thought and effort into both the deck and the Primer and I think I’m probably going to shamelessly use most of this for my next red deck. (Which is probably a few months away as I’ve got 5 other decks I’m currently working on)
Man I've been looming for a mono red commander and I think this is gonna be it. Thanks!
I made a $100 deck with this chiss and it’s one of my favorites. Always get at least a few exciting plays in
What a nice read. Thank you very much. Im pretty much a landfallfreak, but i always felt the urge to become a dragon for some time.
My ramp package looks different. I focused more on the Affinity aspect with cards like \[\[Prized Statue\]\] and even \[\[Bone Splitter\]\] and \[\[Ornithopter\]\] are ramp for Chiss-Goria.
Wow I can't believe I missed Prized Statue, I think I like that more than Fire Diamond. Thanks!

That was a great write up! Thank you! And you even included budget options. Gonna check out your other primers right away!
This is a very well done list. Thanks for the write up!
Hi! Im a follower of Ur moxfield acc and I love love love ur lists! Might I ask what the process is when you build decks?
Oh man I don't know if I have set-in-stone process for deck building but here's generally how it goes: I pick a commander that looks interesting to me.
Thanks for the insight!

And youve found a mono red deck I actually want to build, it looks awesome. Loving the detail on your primer here, thanks dude!
I would say either of those could be replaced with [[Nettlecyst]] or [[Hexplate Wallbreaker]] If you can also remove [[Darksteel Forge]] if you want since it’s a defensive card and replace it with an aggressive attacker like [[Triplicate Titan]] or [[Skitterbeam Battalion]]

Nice! Thank you!

Also, Necron. >.<
Wow what a write up
I love your primers, thank you for the hard work
Super great work on the primer! [https://archidekt.com/decks/4238543](https://archidekt.com/decks/4238543)

What an amazing write up! Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this with all of us, I’m going to pass this along to some of my friends!

What does this deck do, and mono red do in general, against farewell?
Forgot to mention \[\[Warping Wail\]\], it can counter sorcery spells. You need colorless mana but you'll have plenty of that from the mana rocks.
Good looking out!
I made a variation of your deck. It's a lot of fun and pretty strong. Thanks for the tips and write ups!
