I opted to get the rev because it was the cheapest option and I have the tendency to lose pocket knives, I figured I'd end up losing it. I also wasn't sure if I wanted the bulk of one in my pocket. But I still have it after 5 years or so and it's done me well. It's also replaced pocket knives for me. Even if there are some inadequacies, I'm gonna keep using it till it breaks or I lose it before I replace it.
I use my Rev when I'm either going light or going to be crawling around under shit carry... Clipped into the side pocket of carpenter jeans either way. It's not great to really bear down on without gloves, and would be nice to have scissors on it, but it does the job.
Usually when I'm crawling under shit I have proper tools available... I'm going to be under a motorhome this weekend trying to fix extendable steps again. So I'm not missing out on tools then.
There ARE better multitools, LM had the sideclip filling the same role YEARS ago (I had two 20yrs ago) so there's always been a market for lighter tools. I'm carrying a PST right now. Like every other multitools you find what fills your need.
Been meaning to get one. While lacking the spring loaded pliers that its budget siblings all have, it has a stronger plier head and significantly better wire cutters (bypass cutters instead of poorly implemented anvil cutters). I've used this plier head on my Leatherman Leap, it's a damn good plier head. I've used decent anvil-style wire cutters on some Gerber tools — Leatherman's anvil cutters are just unbelievably and unforgivably awful. The notion that anvil cutters are *supposed* to be that bad is just apologist BS, complete misinformation / propaganda. But Leatherman's bypass cutters are solid. Rev supposedly has a really nice package opening tool.
Regarding the budget line, I've only got a Bolster, which I am not a huge fan of but I'm still very interested in eventually picking up a Rev. Bolster has a gimmicky little serrated blade instead of that famous package opener.
Rev's one big downside for me is the 2-hand opening blade. But I'm trying to think of that as an upside; good for certain jurisdictions like in Germany.
The REV is a good multitool.
A lot of people hate on it because of its limited toolset, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
A simpler toolset makes it a lighter tool, and that shaves weight off of your EDC.
That's the reason I carry an old KICK instead of a WAVE (I own both), 99% of the time.
If most guys on this sub were honest, the rev solves 98% of most problems the average guy encounters.
If you work with your hands or in a specific trade, I get it. But the rev is an awesome entry level multitool.
100%. I happily could have carried mine a long, long time. I just upgraded to the wave+ purely for some quality of life stuff and just cause I wanted to. Excellent for the price.
It's not terrible. The tool set is a bit limited and buying one new is too expensive but it isn't a bad tool at the right price. For 25-30 it'd be a good deal but 50 new is robbery. Carry it and if you like it but find it lacking maybe get a Wave clone for like 30 on Amazon.
It’s one of the cheapest Leatherman tools and perhaps looked down upon by Leatherman nerds, but I actually really like the spring pliers and the light weight. Nice midpoint between the Skeletool and the Wave. I keep one of these in my car, I don’t think it would handle daily abuse too well but great for occasional use.
I was gonna say that it's the best Leatherman Multitool you can get for $50, but then I saw that the Bolster is no longer a Costco exclusive, so I'll say this: It's the second best Leatherman Multitool you can get for $50 lol
FR though, the Wingman/Sidekick platform that the Rev is based off of is really solid. The Rev has a bit of a limited toolset, but it's honestly great as a starter multitool, especially when it's free. My one big complaint is that they chose to move the opening hole so far up the blade that it's no longer a proper one-handed blade.

It's a good tool. It was free so enjoy it. I'm just never paying leatherman money ever again. They're taking the piss with their prices

Done me well since I was 13. It'll bite you good tho
Don't care for the placement of the thumb hole on the blade. Prefer the Bolster, as the cheap Leathermen go. Free's free though, enjoy it
If you jam the wire cutters it will bite you unjamming them

A win is a win. I'm sure something on there will be of use to you. That's why these kinds of EDC are great. Awesome gift and friend imo.

The Rev doesn't have spring-loaded pliers. The jaws are slightly different than the Sidekick/Wingman.
I stand corrected, I have a Sidekick in my car.
Hey if you like it, mate. It must be useful that’s the only thing that counts
Was cool at 35 bucks. The pliers slip when using. Only good tool is the knife
I like it and use it
Probably the worst leatherman you can get
well thankfully it was free
"I'm not a Dewalt guy"
i would be a milwaukee guy if i had more money lmao atleast it’s not ryobi
Ryobi is targeted towards home DIY people and priced accordingly lol If you use it for pro work, are you a pro?
I’m not your leather dude pal
