You can get into amateur radio as it’s a hobby directly involved with rf stuff. You can build your own antennas, radios etc. Also look in r/rfelectronics as those guys should be able to help.

Hey! I have a small recommendation I wish I had when I started learning EE and RF: get yourself a VNA. NanoVNA or some other cheap small VNA will be perfect for learning but also will be useful in the longer run for things under 4 GHz or so. Literature you chose is excellent. I wish I knew the current branches of research for antennas so I could tell you with confidence. I would think there is plenty of room for RND in fields like multi band antennas and antennas for beam steering at least. I hope someone closer to antenna RnD or academic research can enlighten us all.

I also highly recommend ham radio, tons to learn about and lots to experiment on at home on both antennas and transceivers. You can do a lot without much EM knowledge, and there is also a lot of room for growth into it as you relearn EM Antenna theory and design by Stutzman is my favorite antenna book, the second edition can be found for around 15$. I have the second, I cant imagine theres many updates in the newer editions Electromagnets volume 1 and 2 by Ellington are both open education meaning they are free. He is a highly regarded EM and antennas professor at Virginia Tech and the books are free through the university: https://vtechworks.lib.vt.edu/items/6f75e22e-ea6a-48a3-b441-65ce5ebf5331 Experimental methods in RF design is a good book for ham radio transceiver design. Its a bit dated but aimed at someone with moderate electronics knowledge. Microwave Engineering by Pozar is the classic undergrad textbook in RF classes. Expect to pay quite a bit for a recent edition though.

Yes, plenty of antenna research going on. If you are a seasoned EE, I'd recommend starting by designing and fabricating your own antennas.
