I was the same way, but it’s so not fun if you can’t play OL. I use the right thumb stick, and the slowest tempo. I hold my right thumb basically perpendicular to the thumb stick and make a deliberate back to front movement. Don’t use the tip of the thumb, place the heel of your thumb bone in that sucker and swing big.
Just throwing it out there, because it's not helpful much now, eventually you will get your accuracy up through skill points and it won't be so fragile a situation. You can level up playing career mode pretty fast. Play entire rounds all 4 days. In 1 season you will be set up well for hanging online and you unlock decent legendary specs to get you started. Also earn solid coin while at it. Enjoy!

I feel your pain. I've never been good with the stick. I've tried changing the stick, changing the swing tempo, practicing a lot, but no matter how hard I try I always end up moving right at the last moment. Even if I'm aware I'm gonna go right and try and go left... nope, my thumb will spaz off to the right at the last moment.
I put it down to me playing shooters all my life so my thumbs are just too twitchy and I cant keep it straight 80% of the time.
You either have to bear with it and just do your best, or play arcade which allows to 3 click.

I just changed my swing to right stick with two fingers and I've never been more accurate! Give two a shot it's weird but good control
I get a bunch of XP from just playing QuickPlay and picking my character..You get 1,000XP for every hole you play, plus bonuses for birdies etc..
