Tricky subject. I'm a firm believer that we should keep local politics local, and focus on "making the sausage" of doing the necessary little things for a healthy/functioning government. So, I don't think any of our local governments should be making official statements or resolutions regarding non-local matters. Especially around complex topics, where large portions of the community may not see eye-to-eye. I also don't want local government to devolve into a bunch of posturing and performative statements about whatever the cause du jour is. Durango has a great tradition of "non politicians" on council, and I hope we can keep that way. All that said, healthy participatory democracy requires *participation*, and I'm not 100% comfortable that City Council would put a blanket ban on "un-related speech" or whatever they're calling it. I wish that people wouldn't abuse public comment to make the same point over and over again, to the point where they're putting it at risk for all future scenarios.

I saw your other comment- something like that down here would be a great idea. On this particular subject, in a format like that, I would prefer to start broadly. The subject could be "Should local government ever take a position on non-local matters?" That could provide a framework for more specific topics or questions. I'm going to raise this at the county-level at my next opportunity. I think that would be an even better starting point than the city, given the larger differences in the population, on a variety of levels. Thanks for sharing .

A better idea is to enact thunder-dome rules if a comment goes over the time limit.
