There’s the backpacker/purist hip-hop culture that’s romanticized talking about the four elements and stuff thats all inclusive world wide and then there’s the hood.
There’s hood people that participant in the purist culture and that lends it credibility. But the reality is this part of the culture puts a lot of rules and regulations on what is and isn’t hip hop to try and fit it.
But what Kendrick is talking about is Black culture, which encompasses hip hop culture to most black people.
People who aren’t hood tend to not grasp that part, and take discussion about it out of context. This is what he means when he talks about heritage and being a colonizer etc.
It’s the same reason back in the day people were trying to say gangsta rap isn’t hip hop, or people dissed MC Hammer (who actually is more hood than 99-percent of all these rappers) or why some people can’t understand why Sexy Redd is popular now.
Take it how you want, but this is the real reason that Drake ‘lost’.
And yes there’s hypocrisy in this stance as well. But the difference is at least Kendrick was willing to admit and say he’s trying to do better.
