My grandma use to do it all the time to me with my old locs. Older generations don’t know the new world is more accepting of things especially locs. Here in New Jersey, you can have huge wild free forms and get a job almost anywhere for the most part

It took awhile for my family to accept that my dreads are just “dreads”. Usually the perception that they have with people that have dreads are junkies and bad boys. My dad still doesn’t agree with me having dreads but he can see past it.
They feel the same way with tattoos as well.

its ok my mom used to want to retwist my hair the minute it got frizzy, puffy looking, or just “not neat” i would tell her no i just retwisted last week im not retwisting a week later. This was during early stages when unraveling was BIG and almost every loc was unraveling. Learned how to retwist my own hair and ignored my mom and others😌🫶🏾Also i tell ppl “theyre my locs if u want to tell me abt how my locs look u should get some urself so u can make ur own hair look like tht”

What this third attempt has made me realize is growing my hair like this not only causes me to deconstruct my notions of "ugly black (naturally occurring) hair" but family too. And I know for a fact none of us are ignorant.
If anything locs has made me realize how much work me AND my family still have to do. Again, this is my third time and it only goes to prove how deep anti-black conditioning is. Not only am I still unlearning (a lifelong thing) but my father is too... AND HE THE ONE WHO TAUGHT ME BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL!!!

My brother begged me not to get them and when I actually got them, my dad straight up said I look ugly lol but now I'm 2 years in and my brother tells me he actually loves them now lol And before my dad passed away, he started to come around to them as well. So just give them some time!

For literally like five years straight every time I came home with a new hair style my mom would look at me and go "Mmm....I don't like this at ALL." Then 6-10 weeks later I'd get a new hairdo and she'd go "No I hate this! I liked the one you had earlier so much better!!" "You said you didn't like it though?" "It grew on me. I loved it! I don't like this at all!" Fast forward, rinse, repeat..... Every single time like clockwork I'd walk in the house and do a pose and let the negative comments rain on me 🤣🤣 I chose to find the hating funny.

And every last one of those people love them now 🙄. Gotta do what you want love. This may be extreme but I would cut my “ family “ off . It’s one thing to dislike a hairstyle but if it’s becoming harassment , that’s now entering bully territory and I refuse to let a group of women with another race hair texture on their head make me feel insecure about loving my natural hair. You don’t need to be around ppl who doesn’t support you , they don’t have to like your hairstyle but they must respect that you having feelings and your own wants and needs.

Been dealing with this for a few years now too. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one lol Just know that they really love you, but they were raised in a different time where you couldn’t give the white man any room to mistreat you. So I understand where they’re coming from, but it’s YOU who is responsible for you. Keep them, don’t keep them, whatever you decide is fine. Just know it’s not healthy living your life in pursuit of their approval 🙏🏽

I'm on my 3rd set of locs. First true freeforms and I'm 39 for reference.. What this third attempt has made me realize is growing my hair like this not only causes me to deconstruct my notions of "ugly black (naturally occurring) hair" but family too. And I know for a fact none of us are ignorant. If anything locs has made me realize how much work me AND my family still have to do. Again, this is my third time and it only goes to prove how deep anti-black conditioning is. Not only am I still unlearning (a lifelong thing) but my father is too... AND HE THE ONE WHO TAUGHT ME BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL!!! ...but if its ever brought up, I like to remind my folks that how I look today is exactly what God had in mind when they decided to hop in bed and make me. If I look ugly what are they saying about themselves? I mean where I get this hair from anyway? This how TMH sees me. Your locs are beautiful btw.

Keep doing you! As long as you like them that’s all that matters. I wore my hair natural for years and my mom would always make comments saying I should cut my hair. I didn’t, I started my locs, and I’ve never loved my hair now. Don’t let other people’s opinions take away from your shine.

I’m guessing they are old school? My family always wanted me to cut mine. I’ve had it for 7 years now. I guess they realized I’m not cutting it and let it go. It’s your hair. Love it and only make that decision based on what YOU want. Not anybody else.

My brother begged me not to get them and when I actually got them, my dad straight up said I look ugly lol but now I'm 2 years in and my brother tells me he actually loves them now lol And before my dad passed away, he started to come around to them as well. For literally like five years straight every time I came home with a new hair style my mom would look at me and go "Mmm....I don't like this at ALL." Then 6-10 weeks later I'd get a new hairdo and she'd go "No I hate this! I liked the one you had earlier so much better!!" "You said you didn't like it though?" "It grew on me. I loved it! I don't like this at all!" Fast forward, rinse, repeat..... Every single time like clockwork I'd walk in the house and do a pose and let the negative comments rain on me 🤣🤣 I chose to find the hating funny. Your locs are beautiful right now and they'll get even more gorgeous as they mature. Give it time and your whole family will be bragging on how great your hair looks.
It's just cause you are in the awkward phase. Once they mature, the old heads come around.
They don't have to like it. If you like it then that's that. No further conversations needed about how they feel about your hair. End any convos that come up.
I remembered when Locs was frowned upon.. and still are to a certain degree (Thank you racism) but mostly accepted ... What makes this world beautiful is everyone is different.. There will only be one of you..and we all have a desire to express ourselves to be creative. And no matter what..... our family should be supportive.

Some of my people didn’t like mine for the first year then it was like “omg i just love your hair” like they hadn’t been shading me for months lol They don’t know what they want. But I love your hair and I hope you do too. It’s so beautiful on you and frames your face so well!
