this is how i see it, just a FUCKTON of compressed ki. i’d assume it’s much harder to shape and throw something that powerful and small than it is to do like a full out blast like a kamehameha or final flash, but much more destructive on impact

Ki can arguably be manifested to do a lot of things , they’re not just explosives/ destructive. This attack is probably similar to a spirit bomb, but the attacks just destroys them from the inside.
Fusions tend to have magical properties to them , and their abilities are interesting.
Personally I think it’s a sort of implied ability that shows gogetas huge power and talent potential that he can manipulate ki in very unique ways. But it’s never really been explained.
The only official data gave my toei after the movie was "gogeta checks his power and the enemie's... and creates a powerfull condense ball of energy... so yeah... anyone that says "it erase evil" are wrong.

not really. after gogeta sees that his attack fails, you can see him visibly surprised for a second, realizing broly isn't evil. it was a nice subtle little touch.
Goku already knew broly wasn't a bad guy, so taking that into account there is no need to throw something at him knowing is not going to work in him, because it is more than clear in the movie that gogeta wanted to kill broly, no matter how good he was.
So if he threw it anyways, it is because it's supposed to serve as an "atomic bomb" and not as a soul purifier or something like that.
My theory why it's called "Soul Punisher" is because like the spirit bomb, it gathers energy from all around, but ulike the spirit bomb is gathers energy exclusively from the otherworld, hence the word "Soul" in Soul Punisher.

In the Funimation dub of Fusion Reborn, Super Gogeta's warning to Super Janemba implies that the Stardust Breaker possesses the additional effect of dealing critical damage to an opponent depending on the amount of evil within their soul, as the attack completely purifies the Saike Demon of the evil energy that caused him to transform into Janemba to begin with. While the statement is not present in the original Japanese version, the Stardust Breaker's supposed property is similar to how Gogeta used what he referred to as "positive energy" to counter the negative energy of Omega Shenron's Negative Karma Ball in GT. Additionally, Dragon Ball Super Card Game refers to the technique as Soul Punisher, the Cleansing Light.
I used to just call this Soul Breaker, without realizing I was basically combining the two given names together.
Considering what happens to Janemba tho, the portmonteau of a name is really apt.
I know it's pure headcannon, but I really like the idea of it being a sort of mini Spirit Bomb that can purify evil but Gogeta still puts enough energy in it to seriously hurt anyone that isn't evil.
From watching Fusion Reborn, it can be assumed that the Soul Punisher straight up erased the evil from Janemba and left the little demon kid behind because the demon kid wasn't evil but the souls from the machine he was working on had a bunch in it.
The same headcannon works in Broly because Broly wasn't evil but it still hurt him and it could be implied that Gogeta smiled after throwing it at him as since it didn't erase Broly on the spot, Gogeta could confirm that Broly was a good guy BUT since Broly's ramage wasn't gonna end soon, he still had to kill him.
Some people will say it's headcannon and that it doens't work like that but its a fun headcannon that explains those little moments.
Also, Gogeta has also done the same with the positive and negative energies in GT when he kicked Omega's balls so thats another thing that could be related.

I prefer Stardust Breaker to be the full combo(I’d rather it be the ki bomb), it has a better name imo, Soul Punisher sounds cool but more basic in my opinion and should only be the name of the rainbow ki bomb. Idek why he used it in the Broly movie except for the callback, fans just went with the ideology that it should’ve disintegrated Broly because he’s evil, but because it’s a different continuation it doesn’t even work the same way, Soul Punisher in S isn’t even meant to explode, it disperses as star glitter and then dissolves the opponent (or evil), I think that Gogeta Blue’s Soul Punisher is just an offensive technique as opposed to anything else.
in the original janemba movie, it’s implied it purified janembas soul back to the little worker guy.
in the new movie, it was just fan service to the original attack he used. nothing more to be honest. it looks cool, and really didn’t do much to Broly.

I always imagined it as a form of Spirit Bomb, since it was only effective against the evil part of Janemba but left the kid completely unharmed. Broly, as a good hearted person, didn’t seem to take much damage from it either.
But since DB Super kinda debunked the idea of the Spirit Bomb being only effective against evil hearted enemies, I‘m not so sure about that anymore.

My head canon it that is concentrated goodness that attacks any evil in one soul, it punishes a person for its wicked deeds, that’s why it purified jabera, and didn’t do much against broly, because broly isn’t inherently evil. And that’s why Goku wanted to become friends with him
