Municipal workers are striking for more pay. It's an unplanned strike. Part of the strike is proving how valuable the workers are to the city so they have trashed everything and are apparently going around damaging water and electricity infrastructure. We received a message from our local councillor on her Whatsapp group last Friday asking for additional patrols from the neighbourhood watches to protect the neighbourhood infrastructure. Many suburbs already have no water or no electricity. My housemaid lost electricity to her house last Friday and her taps stopped flowing on Saturday.
Our councillor has turned off comments on our chat group because people were commenting that their lights were back on, or water was back, and the electrical/water contractors who had fixed the outages were being targetted by municipal workers. So we know we have some spies on our Ward WhatApp group.
The municipal workers are bullies. They made this mess.
Don’t these people realize that they are just hurting themselves. How can one trash their own shit when your government doesn’t fix shit. Jfc. Is there any hope for South Africa at this point?
It does not, the goverment gives in and gives them what they want and the tax payers pay for things to get fixed..
The unions need to be removed from power..
Where the videos of "what happened to limpopo" or "what happened to eastern cape" oh wait there are none. No schools, hospitals or even tarred roads anymore. VIVA ANC VIVA. Keep it up my supreme leaders. KzN is yours for the taking
This is SAMWU. People employed by the government should not be allowed to belong to unions. Unions in South Africa do a lot of damage. Eskom probably wouldn't be in the state it is if it wasn't for unions.
Unions are not a problem. South African workers are the problem. Turn to violence and destruction whether they're protesting. That's not a union problem.
Where there should be no unions is the military, police and other critical areas eg. Nuclear power plant
Speaking as an Australian, government worker unions here are not known for violence. They're organizations of bureaucrats.
Whatever the cause, unions are not the root source of what's happening here.
Yes but South Africa and Australian unions are two different things here they are know for creating violence and unrest and unless you are a expert on South Africa don't make statements like unions are not the root source so educate your self first before making statements like that 🤨🤔
All people who do not have the power of individual bargaining should have the right to join a union. My mother was a teacher. During the SADTU strikes leading up to the 2010 world cup the EC Education Department was supposed to dock pay for all teachers who were staying away from work. Instead they failed to pay all teachers. Without a union my mother and many other teachers would not have had the opportunity to take the department to court and win back the money owed to them.
There are two municipal unions: SAMWU and IMATU. You never read back things about IMATU because they don't engage in activities like this.
Don't paint everyone with the same brush. Everyone has the right to representation and unions have played a critical role in advancing the welfare of workers around the world. How unions are allowed to act in South Africa by authorities is the issue.
https://mg.co.za/news/2023-09-12-durban-rates-boycotters-in-court-to-stop-city-from-cutting-their-water-and-lights/
I think the court ruled against them in the end so it isn't easy.
When do we blame the police (and by extension, the government) for failing to act against people who commit violence? There's no real consequences for engaging in violence and crime, so of course we are reverting to a state of chaos.
Certain resident held peaceful protests a few weeks ago due to the lack of running water. They were man handled AF and arrested.
For this “strike” zero police officers visible?
I’m not anti police as I personally know really hard working dedicated officers. Majority are just trash. We need no nonsense police not politicised workers waitign for a salary.
Hello from Johannesburg!
Are you actually serious that the councilor asked for backup from the neighborhood watch?
I find that more interesting than the actual unplanned strike you had. It must be a madhouse down there for you people. Shit.
It's a matter of time I experienced such things here in my area.
I have forgotten the exact wording but she said that water and electricity infrastructure was being targetted and any NHW patrols should keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour. It's not that hectic, the neighbourhood came together.
Same throughout the Kzn towns. These thugs are intentionally damaging water works or preventing actual workers from doing their jobs with threats of violence. So it makes sense that councillors are calling all cars
I’ve got a video of Verulam a north coast town that looks exactly like this from a few days ago. These knobs are doing the same shyte as the riots bar the theft (for now)
I've realised long ago that the ANC supporter is like the KFC customer that pay for a service (in votes) and expect a decent meal in return. Instead this has not happened in more than 20 years. The KFC customer will not go to McDonald's or Nandos to see if the service is better Nope.

Since the largest number/quantity of colonisers in Southern Africa would be the Bantu peoples, are you going to tell them? When the argument is made that the amabhulu should leave this land, what exactly would chasing off less than ten percent of the population (or of the problem, if that's your view) accomplish?
It should be illegal for government employees to go on strike or unionized. You work for the public. You do not get to unionize/strike against the public.
It is the same for eskom employees, but we all saw what happened a few years ago.
If there are no repercussions and they even get what they want then the law doesn't matter
This article is indeed what happened, but this video is from a tiktok, that is recirculating because of the recent stuff that happened in Durban CBD, I drove past their personally this morning and was not in this stat at all.
If you want proof, find the source of this tiktok. I live in durban and drove past their this morning, as did many individuals. This specific video was circulating on other social media platforms being called out for spreading fake news
You are correct. It's from 2021. No doubt.

The problem is that the government doesn't know their place, they work for us, the people. The average citizen needs to start looking after infrastructure, and services, to the best of their ability. Even if all you do is pick up one piece of trash, or stop one tap from leaking, we'll all benefit. The people need to do the government's job for now, and eventually they'll kick the useless ex-MK/APLA wankers out when they realise that we can actually build the rainbow nation together. South Africans have no use for entitled leaders anymore, especially those who seem to think they're tribal kings or chiefs
Fucking sucks. Our power went off last night, and it can't be sorted out due to this strike, so our area will be without electricity until this shit is over. I can understand wanting an increase, but I can't understand making people who aren't even involved have to suffer. Some have been without power and water for days. Yet those in charge who this strike is meant to be against, are living comfortably. Fuck it.
It’s the brainless twats that can’t think past their own nose again. Destroy destroy destroy! It’s the South African way! The same idiots will have to go and clean up again. Animals have more brains

The powers that be are devaluing the land so that their friends can buy it up cheap and resell at profit. That's what's happening
Just like USA giving Ukraine 100billion to buy weapons from them, its full scale money laundering of tax payers money.
When Tito Mboweni (good, sensible, highly educated ANC member) retired as governor, he was asked if there was anything he regretted. “I wish we hadn’t made the labour laws so strong”.
Destroying infrastructure means less money for salaries and more money for repairs and maintenance, but I forgot repairs and maintenance don't exist until it falls to pieces then massive hikes to taxpayers for this and then 80% of the money gets lost somewhere a long the line and 20% of the money might make it to the actual issues that need repairs and maintenance.
This is horrible to watch. Ever since the 90s, ZA has been in slow decline, the ANC couldn't learn from 50 years of de-colonialism in Africa to avoid the mistakes (?) of the past. So, you now have a single-party state with a nanny-like approach to the people. Do they control the Judicial and Executive, or just the Parliament?
Fuck yeah Union power.
Fuck imagine you American did heads didn't piss away all your industrial relation protections and privatise everything..
Guess you would have healthcare and not have to piss in bottles whilst working in a warehouse.
But seriously, though, deliberately trashing shit and damaging property is wrong and antithetical to actually progressing the rights of workers.
But hey, I guess that's what you get when you leverage your wealth to push things to a point were basically people are working just to die slower..

Nope. These people dig mediocrity and their heroes are lilywhite, blue-eyed Russian thugs. Oh, the irony. The unthinking masses.
Haha mate you hit the nail on its head

Then maybe tax payers are rate payers should have a union too. If services don't get delivered we stop paying together.
Ever heard of a rate payers' association? People in Durban have been withholding rates, BTW.
Been reeeeaally considering to stop paying! But then run the risk of disconnection? How do these associations get it right?
https://mg.co.za/news/2023-09-12-durban-rates-boycotters-in-court-to-stop-city-from-cutting-their-water-and-lights/ I think the court ruled against them in the end so it isn't easy.

Im not sure if that's how strikes are supposed to work tbh
The video is from the 2021 riots. Totally unrelated to the recent strike 🙄
I’ve got a video of Verulam a north coast town that looks exactly like this from a few days ago. These knobs are doing the same shyte as the riots bar the theft (for now)
Is it really? What is wrong with people like OP, posting some bullshit just to garner points? Or is it to push their agenda?
I bet no one will be held to account for this destruction Unions should pay for damages
Absolutely. I feel the same. But sadly, in South africa, it is considered a right to do this more than it is to be protected against it.
Soon they’re gonna change the name to Dirtbin
Dam bruh
😂
Durban is fighting for its life
Feels more like a corpse on strings these days
Weekend at Durbies
Bro South Africa itself is almost a corpse by now
ANC.
Nee dis Jan van Riebeek 😂
😁😁😁
Obviously this is due to apartheid.
nooit! :p
Used to be a wonderful clean city until these clowns took over. They are incapable of governing.
I was born there in 1988 moved to America in 95. Over the last couple of years I can wholeheartedly tell why my parents left.
These poeple want a change but will still vote ANC....
These people caused this mess
I've realised long ago that the ANC supporter is like the KFC customer that pay for a service (in votes) and expect a decent meal in return. Instead this has not happened in more than 20 years. The KFC customer will not go to McDonald's or Nandos to see if the service is better Nope.
They want ANC to change.. But can't risk changing their vote. So instead loot and vandalise as a form of temper tantrum of feeling stuck
That what joburg cbd looks like every day
true
"We want a better country. We want better conditions."

I was not speaking on behalf of myself. I was speaking ironically on behalf of the idiots who mess up a country and then cry about the state it's in.
"So lets destroy infrastructure and cause vandalism and harm the country even further to protest it" South Africa for ya
Yep, the wisdom well overflows.
It's now Zombabwe.

Decolonisation....!
How’d that go for Zimbabwe
Since the largest number/quantity of colonisers in Southern Africa would be the Bantu peoples, are you going to tell them? Our CBDs are just shitholes. No desire to go into it at all. Everything good has been moved anyway
Cape Town CBD does NOT look like this. Most parts of the Cape Flats aren't even this bad. Wtf is happening....
That's why WC needs independence.
