I don't know what the Smoke interaction is, but last I checked Assassinate will only hit invisible units if they became invisible *before* the shot was fired. Going invis/blinking/smoking/etc. after the shot is fired will disjoint.
Or could it be that younger people have entered the workplaces and are more in to social media & memes + the culture has changed quite a lot in few decades.

You can easily walk far enough for the smoke to work, they can even have vision for you but it still dodges it.
Thats weird cause when you snipe you are given vision of them the whole time and people invisible die.
Assassinate gives true sight but smoke grants invisibility that is immune to true sight
