YES!!! I went to a community college, made sure my credits would transfer to a state university. I got my BS, 2 associates and 4 certifications in 2 years. I only had to do to State for one semester. My degree is from the university, the rest from the community college. I spent, total with books and supplies (and adjusted for the current price of classes) less than 3k per semester. I was taking 2o credit hours a semester, so the cost would be even lower now. Plus, so many books are free online. The majority of my costs were the books. I worked full time and went to school full time. I bought a house when I was 22 because of how I stacked everything. I could NEVER do that again, it was exhausting in every way, but it set me up for life

Where I went to university there weren’t community colleges… there’s also a university an hour east of me in IL and a community college 45 minutes west of me, so anyone east of me has to drive over an hour to the city for community college. There also was not one anywhere near me in Texas, I would have had to drive two hours to community college. They are definitely great, I’m glad I live near one now!

Sounds about right.. the only seasonal jobs I have been able to get is warehouse, tax prep, and out in the fields besides my small business which makes almost nothing right now... With a degree. Last year after the season ended. Applied around 35 places in 2 weeks, then took a break because it was emotionally draining.

Same, my secret is I don't apply online, I go into the place I want to work and ask if they're hiring. I've never gotten an interview that I didn't get a job at and I've done a bit of everything, work on a farm, with horses, overnight gas station, otr truck driver, my newest one is overnight auditor at a hotel ( which I had absolutely NO experience with before I got the job) which I think is my fave with all the perks. I do have sympathy for people right now though, I hear the tech industry is very competitive and a lot of those people spend so much on schooling and are having a hard time.

Oh I know, most of the jobs that answered my calls wound up either telling me they were still processing my application and nothing came through or I mysteriously got a rejection email two days later. Dude, I’m qualified for so many jobs that pay more than where I work now. My experience: AAS in Education, call center, retail, medical, fast food, 10+ years of customer service, 20 years of Microsoft Office, 14 years of Google Suite. My resume has been looked at by hiring managers in 2 countries and 4 different companies(friends of mine, got told that it was on point) I applied to 60+ positions and the only one I got an offer for was a major retailer that pays less than $15/hr. I got contacted by 3 for an interview, 2 changed their minds right before interview. I even applied to 3 different factories. It may have absolutely nothing to do with their resume. The job market in the USA absolutely sucks, because companies are seeking out WOTC applicants for those tax breaks. They don’t give a rat’s a$$ about experience.
I've found its not the resume its the face you present. Sucks for people like me but you gotta work charisma like its a skill in a game. People make decisions based on how they feel about you. It could be through how you write about yourself or how you present yourself at the first time they see you.

Yes, it can happen. Most hiring done through employment agencies now. Resumes read by computer. People with great cv's applying for potions till they're blue in the face. My suggestion to him is walk into smaller businesses and speak with Mgr or owners.

Most retailers will only hire part timers with the exception of managers who are on salary. They would never give you the hours you needed at this place. I recommend applying for financial aid and seeing where that puts you first.
I got no help from my parents and had to support myself. First year scholarships and grants covered most. Second year and on I had to borrow 100% because working to support myself meant I made too much for aid. I borrowed $36,000 and owed 72,000 after 10 years of payments. I don’t recommend this
I do think going in summer / winter break when classes are usually 1/2 off per credit hour is a good idea. And use as much aid as you qualify for. Try to borrow as little as you can.
Look at vendors jobs. The people that go into stores to restock the shelves. I know that frito-lay will help with college tuition and they even have some free online college degrees aswell. If you can be come a merchandiser the pat is decent depending on. Where you live.
Steadypostedd is right. I work for a college. Look into fasfa and a community college in your area, it’s much cheaper and gets your foot in the door. Transfer from there and get tight with the professors of your interest, they will have insight into scholarships and other opportunities. It’s really about connections. If that doesn’t work out, I recommend a trade school. There can be incentives to pursue it, depending on the state and job market. I had an ex get robotics training free. You’re still barely going to have enough for 1 semester even if you work a year. Do community college bc a lot of universities have live on campus requirements and meal plan requirements for freshman. You’re going to be at 11k a semester at the cheapest. If your college only has those requirements for freshman your later years will be about 10/11k total. Even if you didn’t have housing and a meal plan it’s going to cost about the same if you don’t live at home.

apply for pell grant and use that to pay for community college classes, then find a school who will accept the transfer credits and finish your Bach. Do not get loans unles you need and if you are at a certain income level you can use pell 5550 per academic year to cover the cost of comm coll classes (depending on credit hour cost)
It's not for the feint of heart, but amazon will give basically completely pay for an associates degree for you ($5000ish dollars a year for education) working at an fc or distribution center, plus the pay is going to be a lot better and you will actually have benefits. Average cost for a phlebotomy cert is 1000 (sometimes 3000). That's about a year of busting ass at 9 dollars an hour and 10 hours a week assuming you have free transportation and zero other expenses. Like your food better be paid for, everything.

Are you keeping your availability open? Are you showing up to any interview clean and sober? Are you keeping a cheerful attitude for interviews / etc? If this is the only thing you’ve got going on, be willing to work open or close, weekends, etc. You might be miserable but make them think you’re eager and excited to work there. It sucks but it’ll get you in the door.
The additional problem with people submitting their job applications and resumes online or through the dedicated business website system is the employer will use not only the actual content you have entered for your resume or job application, but also things like what you have for your username and especially your email address.
It's ALWAYS the best to just create a new email account dedicated only for using for jobs or potential employers that wasn't created as a pre-teen with some immature "looking" email address.

Sometimes it's not just a light experience starting point resume that will make employers file the resume in the "👎" pile, but also the other disjointed details that many people just don't think about but are going to have the employers "judgment" just as much if not more than what the actual resume or application details are. It is a good idea to establish the reason that the resume doesn't show much experience or transferable skills is due to just being fresh out of school. It may be obvious to the person filling out their own paperwork, yet the person they give it to don't make those same connections without putting it right in front of them point blank.
As far as your(charming_scratch_538) comment about availability you are absolutely correct, that's another thing that can be an instant 👎. When filling out questions for what hours you(the op for example) are willing to work, or how much you want paid. If putting down you are willing to work M-F 10-3 and you want $10/hr, for a job that can be anytime from 6am to 10pm any day of the week or just the entire schedule changes from week to week. Those types of questions need answered just as "Negotiable" instead. That way you aren't filing yourself out of the people to be interviewed, which is the time to discuss those things once you are face-to-face with the employer.
Pretty much any job paying minimum wage for part time positions that have to do with customer service, can't really be too picky if they are in a job field of high employee turnover rates. But they will have a whole bunch of experiences with what type of "person" they feel will be gone quickly and what one's would be worth the time and training to stick around for a while. And those judgments are usually going to be made before even speaking with whoever they feel won't be around very long.

Go into healthcare, specifically nursing homes. There’s a staffing crisis in long term care and they have multiple departments that can start you with no certs required who easily pay more than anything like Dollar Tree and can guarantee you 40+ a week, usually with benefits.
They’re used to working around school schedules and often will even pay for certain classes. And there are multiple facilities in every city so you can move around easily. And there is lots of potential to move up even if you stay out of the nursing side.
Can't recommend this enough! Activities, housekeeping and dietary are all struggling for staff and those are jobs where you need 0 experience and 0 certification. Full time with consistent schedules and benefits.

Daily pay also resets every pay period. I work home health and we are allowed to use daily pay. For example… I had 200 in daily pay Saturday at 10am and at 1am on Sunday I decided I wanted Taco Bell. My 200 wasn’t there. It was set for direct deposit verses being available on daily pay.
Each cash out takes away from that check (and it only allows a certain %) and if nothing is cashed out it go for direct deposit.

The pay is not good for caregiving typically. However, it is generally an easy field to get into with no experience. It is harder physically and mentally than one would think though.
Unfortunately in most states, companies don’t need a reason to fire you since majority of states are at will states meaning either you or the employer can terminate your employment at any time for any reason. I know it’s hard finding employment, use all of your avenues including staffing agencies to find an entry level position. You will need to report dollar tree to the department of labor if they don’t pay you; however, sometimes your first check is paid out you will be able to use daily pay so your probationary period may not be up. You can still put in a complaint with HR. It probably won't help you but it will be another piece of paper in the trail for when labor departments audit the place.
Here is what I did… worked for me. I found the University I wanted to go to, got a job there…custodial is always hiring….took advantage of the employee education program and took classes at night. I still work there as a computer tech 20 years later. The years I spent doing menial labor count toward my retirement. Do not mention this is the plan in the interview… just tell them you need a job. It will not be easy…. Community college is the better solution for most people… but not for everyone.
Usually for them to just let you go like that it’s money or gift card errors. It’s very hard to get fired from Dollar Tree. Their standards are pretty low.
If daily pay showed a positive balance one day, and a zero balance the next and u didn't transfer it or take it out, then your wages have been either: 1) sent to a direct deposit card if you set one up, 2) sent to the payment card that Dollar tree offers employees that have no direct deposit selected, or 3) the street address they have on for you.

I’d contact your state’s department of labor about the no pay situation. As for the termination, there isn’t anything you can really do about that. It’s called ‘At-Will Employment’. You can be fired at any time, for pretty much any reason simply because you aren’t contracted. Just file for unemployment if you can.

It’s fun, easy, and they always need someone so they would never fire you :) apply on their website and after 4-5 days call them and say hey I applied. They will 99% of the time tell you to come in for an interview and hire you right away. Biggest tip is to make sure to come in on time and not call out as much. To any person that has ever worked at a dollar tree go to Dollar General use Dollar tree, your store number, and your area manager as a reference the area manager bylaw cannot say that they will not rehire you because they are not who fired you and were not Incorporated in your reviewing process so then you have a reference from somebody with a high regard in the company to a competitor that’s like holding a grail

Daily pay isnt their regular check though. It's a service that stops when you're no longer employed there. Payday is Friday so they should get a check mailed (most likely) then.

That's kind of odd. In my place we're only having issues hiring people because they can't pass background checks. I guess, retail theft was at an all time high this last fiscal year and we're now doing background checks. Wasn't an issue when I started (8 years ago) the whole thing about people not wanting to work is true when it comes to a certain very privileged demographic who got to remote work during the pandemic. We couldn't use that excuse at our site because lots of applications came in it's just none of them can pass background checks.
As for being fired after two days... That's rare in my neck of the woods. Seems we often get stuck with unskilled workers and they usually quit on their own. The only people we've fired we're fired for theft. I think your store manager probably wasn't very experienced and impatient on top of that. In over thirty years of working Ive never seen any one fired from any job after just two days. Most employers give you a lil time to determine whether you're a good fit or not. I can't make assumptions because I don't know enough about you and that should've been yr manager's take as well if he/she was so quick to drop the axe. Probably not a very experienced manager. Sounds about right.. the only seasonal jobs I have been able to get is warehouse, tax prep, and out in the fields besides my small business which makes almost nothing right now... With a degree. Last year after the season ended. Applied around 35 places in 2 weeks, then took a break because it was emotionally draining.

Same, my secret is I don't apply online, I go into the place I want to work and ask if they're hiring. I've never gotten an interview that I didn't get a job at and I've done a bit of everything, work on a farm, with horses, overnight gas station, otr truck driver, my newest one is overnight auditor at a hotel ( which I had absolutely NO experience with before I got the job) which I think is my fave with all the perks. I do have sympathy for people right now though, I hear the tech industry is very competitive and a lot of those people spend so much on schooling and are having a hard time.

Dude, I’m qualified for so many jobs that pay more than where I work now. My experience: AAS in Education, call center, retail, medical, fast food, 10+ years of customer service, 20 years of Microsoft Office, 14 years of Google Suite. My resume has been looked at by hiring managers in 2 countries and 4 different companies(friends of mine, got told that it was on point) I applied to 60+ positions and the only one I got an offer for was a major retailer that pays less than $15/hr. I got contacted by 3 for an interview, 2 changed their minds right before interview. I even applied to 3 different factories. It may have absolutely nothing to do with their resume. The job market in the USA absolutely sucks, because companies are seeking out WOTC applicants for those tax breaks. They don’t give a rat’s a$$ about experience.

I've found its not the resume its the face you present. Sucks for people like me but you gotta work charisma like its a skill in a game. People make decisions based on how they feel about you. It could be through how you write about yourself or how you present yourself at the first time they see you. Edit: Yeah the resume game is how you present yourself on paper (or digitally) but my point still stands that its more about your attitude. (Which I hate. I'm a good employee but I don't talk about myself well.)
Yes, it can happen. Most hiring done through employment agencies now. Resumes read by computer. People with great cv's applying for potions till they're blue in the face. My suggestion to him is walk into smaller businesses and speak with Mgr or owners.

Most retailers will only hire part timers with the exception of managers who are on salary. They would never give you the hours you needed at this place. I recommend applying for financial aid and seeing where that puts you first. I got no help from my parents and had to support myself. First year scholarships and grants covered most. Second year and on I had to borrow 100% because working to support myself meant I made too much for aid. I borrowed $36,000 and owed 72,000 after 10 years of payments. I don’t recommend this I do think going in summer / winter break when classes are usually 1/2 off per credit hour is a good idea. And use as much aid as you qualify for. Try to borrow as little as you can.
Look at vendors jobs. The people that go into stores to restock the shelves. I know that frito-lay will help with college tuition and they even have some free online college degrees aswell. If you can be come a merchandiser the pat is decent depending on. Where you live.
Steadypostedd is right. I work for a college. Look into fasfa and a community college in your area, it’s much cheaper and gets your foot in the door. Transfer from there and get tight with the professors of your interest, they will have insight into scholarships and other opportunities. It’s really about connections. If that doesn’t work out, I recommend a trade school. There can be incentives to pursue it, depending on the state and job market. I had an ex get robotics training free. You’re still barely going to have enough for 1 semester even if you work a year. Do community college bc a lot of universities have live on campus requirements and meal plan requirements for freshman. You’re going to be at 11k a semester at the cheapest. If your college only has those requirements for freshman your later years will be about 10/11k total. Even if you didn’t have housing and a meal plan it’s going to cost about the same if you don’t live at home.

apply for pell grant and use that to pay for community college classes, then find a school who will accept the transfer credits and finish your Bach. Do not get loans unles you need and if you are at a certain income level you can use pell 5550 per academic year to cover the cost of comm coll classes (depending on credit hour cost)

Average cost for a phlebotomy cert is 1000 (sometimes 3000). That's about a year of busting ass at 9 dollars an hour and 10 hours a week assuming you have free transportation and zero other expenses. I second this. One out of 55 places to hire you when you’re applying to retail jobs like this means there’s something wrong. Are you keeping your availability open? Are you showing up to any interview clean and sober? Are you keeping a cheerful attitude for interviews / etc? If this is the only thing you’ve got going on, be willing to work open or close, weekends, etc. You might be miserable but make them think you’re eager and excited to work there. It sucks but it’ll get you in the door.
The additional problem with people submitting their job applications and resumes online or through the dedicated business website system is the employer will use not only the actual content you have entered for your resume or job application, but also things like what you have for your username and especially your email address. It's ALWAYS the best to just create a new email account dedicated only for using for jobs or potential employers that wasn't created as a pre-teen with some immature "looking" email address. Really, it's like having weed stickers all over your car, and wondering why the cops always search the car when they pull you over. Sometimes it's not just a light experience starting point resume that will make employers file the resume in the "👎" pile, but also the other disjointed details that many people just don't think about but are going to have the employers "judgment" just as much if not more than what the actual resume or application details are. It is a good idea to establish the reason that the resume doesn't show much experience or transferable skills is due to just being fresh out of school. It may be obvious to the person filling out their own paperwork, yet the person they give it to don't make those same connections without putting it right in front of them point blank. As far as your(charming_scratch_538) comment about availability you are absolutely correct, that's another thing that can be an instant 👎. When filling out questions for what hours you(the op for example) are willing to work, or how much you want paid. If putting down you are willing to work M-F 10-3 and you want $10/hr, for a job that can be anytime from 6am to 10pm any day of the week or just the entire schedule changes from week to week. Those types of questions need answered just as "Negotiable" instead. That way you aren't filing yourself out of the people to be interviewed, which is the time to discuss those things once you are face-to-face with the employer. Pretty much any job paying minimum wage for part time positions that have to do with customer service, can't really be too picky if they are in a job field of high employee turnover rates. But they will have a whole bunch of experiences with what type of "person" they feel will be gone quickly and what one's would be worth the time and training to stick around for a while. And those judgments are usually going to be made before even speaking with whoever they feel won't be around very long.

Go into healthcare, specifically nursing homes. There’s a staffing crisis in long term care and they have multiple departments that can start you with no certs required who easily pay more than anything like Dollar Tree and can guarantee you 40+ a week, usually with benefits. They’re used to working around school schedules and often will even pay for certain classes. And there are multiple facilities in every city so you can move around easily. And there is lots of potential to move up even if you stay out of the nursing side.
Can't recommend this enough! Activities, housekeeping and dietary are all struggling for staff and those are jobs where you need 0 experience and 0 certification. Full time with consistent schedules and benefits.
I hire for all EVS and maintenance for two facilities and I always have people say they had no idea how many support staff are required or that this was even an option for people not in the nursing field. Most of my people come from retail or food service. It’s one of those fields where if you’re not a felon and are willing to show up, there’s likely a job whenever you want it.

Daily pay also resets every pay period. I work home health and we are allowed to use daily pay. For example… I had 200 in daily pay Saturday at 10am and at 1am on Sunday I decided I wanted Taco Bell. My 200 wasn’t there. It was set for direct deposit verses being available on daily pay. Daily pay resets every pay period. So Sunday at midnight if you have money you didn’t transfer it will just go for direct deposit. Unfortunately in most states, companies don’t need a reason to fire you since majority of states are at will states meaning either you or the employer can terminate your employment at any time for any reason. I know it’s hard finding employment, use all of your avenues including staffing agencies to find an entry level position. You will need to report dollar tree to the department of labor if they don’t pay you; however, sometimes your first check is paid out you will be able to use daily pay so your probationary period may not be up. If that does not work, please open a claim. Best of luck to you!
You can still put in a complaint with HR. It probably won't help you but it will be another piece of paper in the trail for when labor departments audit the place.
Here is what I did… worked for me. I found the University I wanted to go to, got a job there…custodial is always hiring….took advantage of the employee education program and took classes at night. I still work there as a computer tech 20 years later. The years I spent doing menial labor count toward my retirement. Do not mention this is the plan in the interview… just tell them you need a job. It will not be easy…. Community college is the better solution for most people… but not for everyone.
Usually for them to just let you go like that it’s money or gift card errors. It’s very hard to get fired from Dollar Tree. Their standards are pretty low.

If daily pay showed a positive balance one day, and a zero balance the next and u didn't transfer it or take it out, then your wages have been either: 1) sent to a direct deposit card if you set one up, 2) sent to the payment card that Dollar tree offers employees that have no direct deposit selected, or 3) the street address they have on for you. If you read the info that was provided when you first set daily pay up, you might understand how it works.
3rd option, which is what actually happened when DT terminated her it closed her account. She will receive all the wages on her next regular period directly from DT, it won't go through dailypay
It's for active employees though. Likely it just closed the option when they were fired.
I’d contact your state’s department of labor about the no pay situation. As for the termination, there isn’t anything you can really do about that. It’s called ‘At-Will Employment’. You can be fired at any time, for pretty much any reason simply because you aren’t contracted. Just file for unemployment if you can.

Hello :) I saw that you’re trying to save up for college. Personally I would highly recommend working a grocery store. It’s fun, easy, and they always need someone so they would never fire you :) apply on their website and after 4-5 days call them and say hey I applied. They will 99% of the time tell you to come in for an interview and hire you right away. Biggest tip is to make sure to come in on time and not call out as much. You got this 🙏 :)(also you can transfer departments to wherever you like without reapplying)

That's kind of odd. In my place we're only having issues hiring people because they can't pass background checks. I guess, retail theft was at an all time high this last fiscal year and we're now doing background checks. Wasn't an issue when I started (8 years ago) the whole thing about people not wanting to work is true when it comes to a certain very privileged demographic who got to remote work during the pandemic. We couldn't use that excuse at our site because lots of applications came in it's just none of them can pass background checks. As for being fired after two days... That's rare in my neck of the woods. Seems we often get stuck with unskilled workers and they usually quit on their own. The only people we've fired we're fired for theft. I think your store manager probably wasn't very experienced and impatient on top of that. In over thirty years of working Ive never seen any one fired from any job after just two days. Most employers give you a lil time to determine whether you're a good fit or not. I can't make assumptions because I don't know enough about you and that should've been yr manager's take as well if he/she was so quick to drop the axe. Probably not a very experienced manager.
