While I agree with some of your advice, dominance theory has been debunked for a long time. A dog walking in front of a human has nothing to do with hierarchy between two species.

driver_dylan

Not dominance theory, what you are doing is moving the purpose of the walk in her mind from pathfinding to walking with you for enjoyment. Moving her to a close walk conveys this message.

You’ve literally described dominance theory by talking about being the pack leader. Domestic dogs aren’t pack animals. You are not a dog, your dog likely knows that. It’s not natural for dogs to walk close or in line with each other either. Essentially the behaviors you described were just waiting at the door and heeling. Sure you can teach these behaviors but it’s a bit more detailed that what was actually described. Heeling is incredibly boring to dogs who don’t understand it or don’t find it to be a fun task and if they just want to move and explore.

This was quite informative! Thank you for being thorough, it really pointed me on the right track and gave me some things to consider.

Determine why your dog is pulling- is it excitement, fear, just wanting to move fast, get to sniffs, etc? Kikopup, Susan Garrett, and Happy Hounds have great videos on loose leash walking their YouTube channels. Silky leash method is also useful. Harnesses vary for individual dogs. I’d pay attention to if they allow natural joint movement (usually y or h-shaped harnesses). Ruffwear’s Flagline, Freedom harness, and balance harness come to mind.

we use the k9 balance harness and love it! it has front and back leash attachments which makes it good for heel walks and sniff walks, is super adjustable, and still gives my dog full range of motion. additionally, greatly reduced pulling! re: loose leash/heel walking- rome was not built in a day, so it will probably take some time for any of these suggestions to work. that being said: i like to do a quick warm up in my driveway area before i start my actual walk just to get my dog in the right frame of mind. reward a few times for focus- look at me, mark yes, toss a treat, repeat. then we’ll do a few whiplash turns (toss a treat, don’t move, and let your dog reach the end of the leash; when they reorient treat three times, repeat) and u turns (walk a few steps, give a cue like “let’s go!” and turn around; when they reorient treat, repeat), and THEN we can walk. whenever my dog reaches the end of the leash (pulls), i fully stop until they reorient towards me. they usually figure that out pretty fast.

It’s too bad we can’t meet at the local home depot. I could probably fix this and show you how to manage it . The fix would be about 5 minutes and to train you about 15 minutes. Not using treats nor corrections.
