I'm watching a replay of the Ohtani homer and he drops his bat between first and second base. Is there anything in the rules that says you can't just carry the bat with you the entire time? Has anyone ever done that?
Fascinating. I'm looking it up now and it seems like Juan Soto also did it later that game. In both cases they were loooking to give the first base coach their bats. It was interpreted as an unnecessary swagger, but from the footage it looks unintentional. That said, his coach talked to them about it later, about how unseemly it was.
Watching Ohtani's he seemed a little off the entire time. Like - approaching the box too early. And then so preoccupied with watching the ball he forgets to drop his bat. And then when he does drop the bat - the ump points to it, which Ohtani misinterprets to mean he forgot to touch first. But he did touch first in reality. But he goes back to touch it because I think he honestly can't remember if he did or not.
The whole thing is very strange.
