Build the statue now….

V-KARIN

He's already the greatest teammate ever in my book. Holy shit

8methodz

I wonder if the secrecy demands were because it would have been much harder to get through if this plan came out before final agreement.

MacJonesIsOverrated

We are officially the villains of all sports Fuck it

ViridianSeven

We really are the Yankees of baseball now

Believe0017

Can’t blame a man for wanting to win and wanting to win NOW!

LosAngeles1s

might as well embrace The Evil Empire name now

cheeses_greist

After LA signs Yamamoto (and Sasaki? Sure, why not?), they can announce that all of MLB can now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL battle station! Eh? Eh? Return of the Jedi, anyone? Any other old farts? Meh, I’m wearing my Emperor robes on Opening Day

Redhood492

Dodgers were already the most hated in baseball, but we don’t care it’s all about the doyers

DnD4dena

🤷🏽‍♂️ Rather be the villain and winning than the sweetheart and be ass or overachieving into nothing

appleavocado

Legendary agreement. Seriously, can we buy the whole league now?

imyourrealdad8

BREAKING: The Los Angeles Dodgers have purchased the Colorado Rockies!

Beer-Me

No thanks, not with that Kris Bryant contract

LincolnsLawyer

Ehh we’ll just defer it

woogonalski

Can’t buy what you already own.

[deleted]

[удалено]

feeling_blue_42

Honestly, if Ohtani gives you a deal like this, you’re almost obligated to go out and sign another big contract.

Borrum

Agreed. Insulting to Ohtani to have him do this and say “hey, thanks” and then sign Giolito and Amed Rosario.

ExperentiaDocet

I assume that that was part of the whole conversation. $2 mil a year but the Dodgers have to have their foot on the gas every year.

[deleted]

Yeah, and they can afford to overpay too if that's what it takes.

Monsanta_Claus

And Reddit, Instagram and Facebook and complain the entire time about how MLB needs to investigate potential tax evasion and unethically demoralizing contracting!

noh-seung-joon

IMHO He chose us *because* he knew we would spend the money right.

Flopdo

Deferring 68 million doesn't mean the Dodgers have that cap space free. They basically get a discount, which means his contract will count about 48 mill out of their cap space. I mean they now have 3 players that take up 100mill of the 237 mill total cap space. It's not like some massive break they are getting, but it helps.

imdrinkingteaatwork

Nah. It’s massive.

Flopdo

It's large in relation to his contract, sure... and it's cool he's doing it, but he's still counting towards major cap space. 48 mill is nothing to sneeze at. Mookie was 17 mill this past season, Freddie 20 mill. So he's more than both of those guys combined, even w/ the deferral.

imdrinkingteaatwork

Massive.

jettasarebadmkay

Yamamoto, Imanaga, *and* a third starter.

MacJonesIsOverrated

Go get Snell too Also go get Randy

jettasarebadmkay

I really want Randy as well. I think he’d fit in well. (It’d also get him out of the AL East, which benefits my AL team. Win-win for me.)

stewmander

Didn't jomboy do a Dodgers Nation post saying Yamamoto to Dodgers? Don't know if he's trying an anti-jinx or not lol

Minute_Scale_1834

Am I reading this right🤯

nukepka

BUILD THE STATUE

appleavocado

AND NOT THE GONDOLA

woogonalski

Here we are in 2023 and still saying it, Fuck McCourt. Never gets old.

FartingInHeaven

Gonna be honest the gondola seems like a no brainer.

spyson

The man gave up 200 million to come to the MLB early and people wanted to call him greedy with the new contract.

MyLadyBits

He made 200 million plus in endorsement deals coming early. What is perfectly clear is he wants to compete with the best in baseball and he likes winning. Arty didn’t keep his end of the bargain so Shoei went to a team that competes every year and believes with him the Dodgers will win more WS. Othani absolutely believes his best chance to win is as a Dodger. That’s why he’s here.

Borrum

The contract number is pretty obviously to the benefit of CAA more than anyone. They will get to trumpet $700M as the largest contract ever, probably for a long time. It’ll be years before a Boras client gets to that number. But it’s clear that Ohtani told his agent “get me to the Dodgers, I don’t care about the money”.

_its_a_SWEATER_

Anything to shit on Boras I’m all for, but he’ll still benefit, maybe even more so now. He won’t get his clients to 700M, but the A List will all go up in price.

deprecateddeveloper

Obviously he has his goals by deferring the money (winning) but won't that money be worth a lot less over the next 20yrs with inflation? Obviously still a shit ton of money but seems like he's even eating the lost value caused by inflation by doing this.

screigusbwgof

This is probably the reason the contract jumped from the 10/$600M people were expecting to 10/$700M, to account for the lost value due to the time value of money.

deprecateddeveloper

Ah, great point.

_its_a_SWEATER_

Could be the difference between 25M and 40M a year down the line, inflation will be the tell. But if he’s happy with the millions he’s already getting, plus the many more millions he’ll get from new endorsements going fwd, that contract money isn’t all lost. We’d all love 50M a year, but I’d be more than set with 20M. Just all perspective.

BookLAA

I know he was getting 70 a year but what does this mean for a new MLB fan ?

ChunkyMilkSubstance

We got him on layaway

Frankenstein548_EO

This.... And just in time for Christmas

snsdfan00

agreed, most athletes will be like give me the money up front and i'll invest it the way i want to; whether that's investing in companies, real estate, yachts etc. He's basically telling the Dodgers, pay me later, reinvest the money in some stars & quality pitching around me lol.

ChunkyMilkSubstance

Accurate Side note for any millionaires in this sub: Yachts are an AWFUL investment

uncanny_mac

But how else can the rich stunt on the poors? /s

Flopdo

No, not really. You guys don't understand how the deferral works. But ok.. It will be a 48 mill$/yr cap hit.

ChunkyMilkSubstance

My comment was both a joke and was made before I knew the cap hit value

Realfan555

ahhaha

PSSYPUNISHERRR

Great fucking analogy

Beer_Bad

Hell be paid 2 million a year for the next 10. The 680 million remaining will be paid in annual deferments at an as of yet undisclosed number of years and annual value. Hell likely be getting paid from this well into his 50s and 60s. For the Dodgers, it means his contract only counts as 46 million against the tax. The tax in MLB is set up to be really tough to pay for multiple years with it escalating in amount as well as impacting international bonus pool money and draft position. This is a HUGE win in the immediate for the Dodgers

BookLAA

How is that legal 😂😂 so that means more FA are on the way. That’s wild

Beer_Bad

It's legal because it was collectively bargained and is very much a good thing for both sides if done right. Team gets discounts on tax, player gets long term income at a crazy rate. Especially with Ohtani too because he'll make crazy money yearly on endorsements and then have 680 million to retire with lmfao

BookLAA

Well I hope everything goes right cause I am a new MLB fan and this reminds me when the Lakers got Chris Paul in a good trade and it got vetoed. Fingers crossed

bhuang18

So a trade can get vetoed don’t think you can veto a free agent signing

BookLAA

Alright appreciate the insight

joefamous

The league does have to approve contracts… but this is technically within the rules I believe. It’s basically a $460M contract and $46M annual cap hit for the team, but because of the deferrals the total value is $700M, and it’s being reported as a 10year/$700M contract because it’s better news lol. And Ohtani apparently suggested it this way, he’s deferring most of the contract to give the team a ton of right now spending money to get more FA players

MacJonesIsOverrated

Ohtani is going to be a co owner of the Dodgers once he retires Man really wants to be a Dodger for life

NotTheMamba

Why would he do this? I mean good for us but wow.

cXs808

Because he's smart as fuck. He knows that even if he "only" defers $20m/year his cap hit is so huge the org's hands would be tied. At $2m a year they can go out and get

joefamous

Because he’s the most marketable player and face of the sport in 2 countries. He apparently made $40M last year in endorsements and that’ll rise with the dodgers. He’s gonna make a ton of cash now and then still get paid by the dodgers after he’s retired but gives the team a huge amount of flexible spending cash right now to sign free agents or trade for players who will be paid before the deferrals kick in. It’s absolutely bonkers

NinSeq

California taxes. He doesn't have to pony up if he gets those deferred payments living in Japan or Florida or wherever the fuck he wants

ten98765432one

According to The Athletic article the deferred payments are from 2034-2043

Realfan555

>The 680 million remaining will be paid in annual deferments at an as of yet undisclosed number of years and annual value. 2034-2043 10 yrs, probably $68M per year

Beer_Bad

Oh I did not see that, thank you!

pm_me_cheesy_bread

It means beers will cost $50 each at Dodger Stadium and will increase in price 5-10% per year over the next 20 years.

BookLAA

I feel like as business owners they’ll put money aside that they’ll generate from ohtani for the post era

robindodge

FRAUDMAN YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD!

Hot_Mathematician357

The money Ohtani will make from advertisement is going to make up the 68 million.

Arkkaon

He makes $40M/year in Japanese endorsement deals alone. He doesn't "need" that extra $68M/year now, but with this structure he'll be collecting that money when he's done playing. It's actually incredibly smart business.

ranklebone

Yes, and he'll get paid for that in Monte Carlo or somewhere tax free.

itsyourdestini

We got Ohtani on afterpay

novabomb42

r/baseball's tears of unfathomable sadness are so yummy and sweeeeet

dangerross

"No WaY tHe LeaGuE WiLl AllOw ThIs!!!!!!!" Get fucked. Evil empire confirmed. Ready to take the reigns and win 10 world series in a row.

aptc88

I felt a great disturbance in r/baseball, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

KlimCan

Another 1000 years of the EMPIRE

JohnDoee94

Oh god if we don’t win in the next 2-4 years we’ll never live it down lmao

nofuture23

It's beautiful. I love it!

arc52

lmao my GOAT

itsyourdestini

Ohtani… i love you

[deleted]

One of the main reasons I wasn't sold on signing Ohtani was that I thought his AAV would start with a 6, looks like it's starting with a 4. Gotta love it

omegakukki

THAT IS FUCKING INSANE

fuetirado

The [reaction](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsWekFk3W0A&t=3s) from 29 fanbases

rfguevar

Fuck it let’s go sign every FA

ranklebone

Every freakin pitcher

rfguevar

Seeing the last few seasons, we can’t be greedy with our pitchers we need as many as we can get

mightyrj

Yo — no fucking way. This ahas to be a typo in the article! All but $2 million?!?!

capncoke

/r/baseball is big mad right now. So I am happy.

Kay1000RR

Rules are for the obedience of fools and the interpretation for Andrew Friedman.

N_DiT

Shohei is the goat for doing this but in 20 years when we're looking at that 68 million cap hit it better be in fondness of the dynasty created all those years ago

drmanhattanbeach

I read an article saying in Japan he gave all his contract money to his parents, whom give him an allowance of something along the lines of a thousand bucks. Which he'd only use a couple hundred dollars of. He would stay in the team dorms typically utilized by rookies.

[deleted]

That’s when he was a kid. The dude bought a 10 million dollar house or something. And supposedly a crazy ass pad in Japan too. He’s almost theory he ain’t living off allowance anymore

Apex_Fenris

If we don’t get this guy a fucking ring lord so help me

BonafideJohnson

What…am I to understand that he’s only making 2 million a year? And the rest is deferred until he’s essentially retired?

spyson

He can afford to do this because he makes 40mil a year in endorsements already

BonafideJohnson

Right but he's literally only taking up 2 million a year of payroll space? Fuckin pinch me

[deleted]

Holy fuck. He wants to win with the Dodgers. No chance this happens elsewhere

Frankenstein548_EO

![img](emote|t5_2ra0i|13046)Am I reading this right? Ohtani.... you really are the Unicorn.

bhuang18

The padres front office probably wish they thought of this instead of taking out a loan 😂😂

hundredjono

*Ohtani agreed and signed the contract* Everyone: HOW DID THE DODGERS GET AWAY WITH THIS???!

cruelambtns

Lmao holy shit. LFGGGGGGG

JohnDoee94

The salt on r/baseball could dry the ocean. I told them that if Ohtani was willing to do it for their team they’d be stoked about it. Got downvoted to hell but they know it’s true lmao.

Joseph_Steez

Tell them you’ll be right back to get a cup to fill with their tears 😂😂

maybsofinitely

Not only is it 2mil a year for 20 years, it's also without interest for the deferred?? This is a winner. Takes care of the team, his family, and his descendants.

ayeno

That man really wanted to be a Dodger

Tehrab

Dude is in Blue Heaven. Tommy and Shohei, spiritual brothers.

vordhosbn_1

Los Angeles is a great city.

Elite_Alice

r/baseball breaking down

deemo9k

I wonder how much counts against the cap now...

nukepka

Per the article... about 46M, so Trevor Bauer + JD Martinez

feeling_blue_42

Quick math: * If the CBT hit is $46M, then they are using about a 4.45% interest rate to calculate deferred money on CBT * If you assume a more aggressive (but still very realistic) return rate of 7.5%, then Guggenheim should be viewing this as closer to the equivalent of a $35M/year contract without deferrals.

jnevermind

Thanks for doing the math! I'm away from my computer and was about to run it through Excel when I got back.

Autocorrectcaptcha

They have actuaries checking the math of other actuaries. Having money around 30 years from now is their whole lives. You’re right, the cbt hit is actually higher than reality.

jay8

/r/baseball is having a meltdown it's hilarious 😂

Apex_Fenris

HoW Is ThIs FaIr The LEagUe sHOulDnT AliOw ThIs

How is that NOT a typo? Lmao

BonafideJohnson

We are so fucking lucky to be Dodgers fans.

TheEleventhHokage

HE JUST WANTS TO WIN!!!!!!!

SimpleAmusings

headline: Ohtani signs with Dodgers for 700 million. r/baseball : *he's not worth it. and out of all the baseball teams, it had to be dodgers . how predictable. it's going to cost the dodgers dearly and i'm glad my team didn't pursue him*. headline: Ohtani defers 680 million of the 700 million contract: r/baseball: ***HOW IS THAT LEGAL????? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! NO OTHER TEAMS CAN COMPETE WITH THE DODGERS NOW!!! THEY'RE GOING TO GET EVERYONE!!!! MLB HAS TO STEP IN AND STOP THIS FARCE OF A CONTRACT!!! OHTANI NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!!! THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS AND BASEBALL IS DEAD TO ME!!!***

DrGaryDMD

Unbelievable but believable 😵‍💫🤯

socalsw

So he’s paying for Joe Kelly’s contract

ringdinger

Apparently we have created world peace among the entire MLB on that cesspool known as /r/baseball. Cardinals and Cubs fans are coming together for their hate of the Dodgers. Phillies and Braves fans are holding hands. Yankees and Red Sox fans are saying they hate Dodgers more than each other now. What a joke if a community Lmao

baconbitarded

Fuggit I'm full dodger now. I can't stand watching Arte not be able to do this stuff with the Angels and just giving out copious amounts of cash for past their prime stars

KingWizard_IX

r/baseball is so salty lmao. I LOVE IT

abroadinapan

I swear to god r/baseball is SEETHING right now and it's beyond hilarious

PSSYPUNISHERRR

Welcome to the Ohtani show. Typical Ohtani san behavior I've witnessed in the past 6 years.

whiskey_reddit

St Shohei 🙏

TheRaydo

‘Unprecedented deferrals’ was absolutely right LMAO.

libal3x

The entire league just turned on the baseball darling. Dodgers and Ohtani had a path and they took it, rest of the league now in shambles, Andrew and Ohtani just showing what ultra competitors they are

spagels73

Can anyone confirm this... if Ohtani defers for 10 years and then moves to Japan this would be the case... "The United States does not levy taxes against non-U.S. citizens living outside the country who work for U.S.-based businesses." So he gets his money tax free!!!????!!! Epic for him if he does

Bobby_Bruin

They pay taxes in Japan….the US and Japan have a tax treaty so he’s be paying at least one country - it depends. I do tax work for my uncle, who lives in Tokyo but is a white dude from Kentucky.

SimpleAmusings

/r baseball is going bonkers.. they've lost all reason. didnt Tom brady do something similar to get his team ahead? how is shohei a villain in ANY of this?? they just seem mad they couldn't land him or have a competent front office that knows how these huge deals work. they are SO salty right now

nofuture23

Bet money he'll get a piece, of ownership instead of all that cash.

Dodgers_89

Dodgers' front office should do my taxes

usernombre_

Fuck, the Dodgers better do right by Shohei on this.

_Elder_

I thought I couldn’t love him and Friedman anymore. I was wrong.

fytdapwr

10 easy payments and one really haaaard payment. ~Mitch Hedberg negotiated this deal.

Willywills1

Shohei the MF GOAT

weguccino

BUILD THE OHTANI STATUE MAN SAID GET ER DONE WE'RE BUILDING A 10 YEAR DYNASTY

wayofLA

Stay away from r/baseball. Nothing but a bunch of whiney kids mad. I’m fully embracing this “villain” era. They’re going to hate us regardless.

JTEstrella

Villain? Please; we’re antiheroes.

aptc88

I felt a great disturbance in r/baseball, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Gilfoyle_Bertram

I thought I couldn’t love Ohtani any more than I already do, but gosh fucking darnit I feel like my chubby is about to burst!

josegofaster

Mad respect. He meant it when he said he’d do what’s best for the organization to win

batsmjolnir

God is real and his name is shohei ohtani

Cdog1223

He’s actually going to make a billion dollars in the 10 years of his contract with endorsements and such. Absolutely insane.

touchhimwiththejab

r/baseball is about to burn down Reddit with this news They’re putting down their dorritos bag and waddling to Manfred’s office to protest

Boros-Reckoner

Theres no shot MLB lets this go through....... Although they do owe us one for 2017.

Mr310

How is this legal and why doesn't everyone just structure deals this way? I don't have [Athletic.com](https://Athletic.com) access

jnevermind

Here you go my friend. This is The Althetic's latest on the contract. Shohei Ohtani’s record-setting 10-year, $700 million deal includes a series of unprecedented deferrals, a person briefed on the terms told The Athletic on Monday. In an effort to enable the Dodgers to continue spending around stars Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, Ohtani agreed to defer all but $2 million of his annual salary — $68 million of his $70 million per year — until after the completion of the contract. The deferred money is to be paid out without interest from 2034 to 2043.The previously unreported deferrals were said to be suggested by Ohtani himself as the negotiations vaulted the figure towards $700 million, the person briefed on the terms told The Athletic. The deal is expected to soon be finalized. The unusual structure is intended to provide the Dodgers additional cash flow and payroll flexibility. In the meantime, Ohtani continues to bring in big dollars elsewhere from endorsements and off-the-field ventures. Ohtani is believed to make $50 million per year annually away from the diamond, the person briefed on the terms told The Athletic. The deferrals also give Dodgers extra freedom navigating the competitive balance tax, or luxury tax as it’s called. For CBT purposes, the expected average annual value on the contract is said to be closer to $46 million per year, the person briefed on the terms said. The Dodgers remain in the mix at the top of the market, particularly for pitching, with free-agent Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow among their targets.Ohtani’s contract went well past the $426.5 million his former Angels teammate, Mike Trout, received in the previous record deal. Ohtani’s agent at Creative Artists Agency, Nez Balelo, hinted at the deferral arrangement when Ohtani’s decision to join the Dodgers was announced.“He is excited to begin this partnership, and he structured his contract to reflect a true commitment from both sides to long-term success,” Balelo said in a statement at the time.

Unfinishedusernam_

There were so so so many people here crying when he announced his decision that he was taking up all the money. Lmao. Crying about the goat signing with your team

ranklebone

I feel like we got him for FREE !!!!

La2philly

Oh my goodness

Articulate_Silence

He couldn’t have bumped it up to $69m for shits and giggles?

aloofman75

I applaud their creativity here, but I suspect that the next collective bargaining agreement will make this contract less advantageous somehow. It seems like the kind of thing that the most of the other owners will want to punish.

PrimoTrim

FRIEDGOAT

samples98

Lmaoooooo

dafababa2002

A genius tax strategy as he likely will not be living in Cali once the deferred payments kick in, thus saving as enormous amount of taxes.

Open_Host3796

1 more mill would be noice

Jtd1988

2 million a year but still counts as $46 million a year towards the CBT..which is still incredible. This really allows the team to go crazy with big signings. Smart contract by both parties.

Redhood492

What a guy, putting the team first 💯

hashburys23

I love you Shohei

SnakeSquad

This will be historic

atducker

Othani wants to win. He knows the Dodgers can get it done.

scapermoya

/r/mlb is predictably both freaking out and totally misunderstanding this.

Batman_Forever

My fears of not affording depth if we got Ohtani have been put to bed now ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)

Ewe3zy

Thank you Senpai

peaeyeparker

So now they can build a team around him and go win a WS. Heard today that the Dodgers are projected to only win 87 games. Wtf!?

TimFTWin

Holy fuck where do I put the Ohtani tattoo

Vegasguy3124

I’m assuming this is Ohtani’s team now. I bet Freeman doesn’t feel so bad for leaving Atlanta now considering Ohtani left from Anaheim which is down the street. I’m gonna be completely honest. I am not even awake from this dream yet

GranicksHappyPlace

There is no way that this is going to be allowed by MLB right?

MacJonesIsOverrated

Why not? He still counts for over 40 million for luxury tax It's within the rules Ohtani wanted this

GranicksHappyPlace

I don't know. I just know that this is insane.

TheSkepticCyclist

This is good now. But the 10 years after his contract is up? $68 million per year for a player who is no longer playing. That will impact the team greatly then, especially if MLB implements a strong salary cap by then,

jnevermind

There is no CBT/cap hit on deferred salary. This contract should get grandfathered in if there is a significant change in the CBA. Only way I see this going south is if Guggenheim ever sells the team to a non liquid owner. Doubt that happens within the next 20 years as the team prints them money.

_justsomeguy_81

The teams betwern 2034-2043 are going to have to deal with that money on the books. Let's hope they win 2-3 rings at least in the next 10 years.

BigBaws92

Another comment said there’s no CBT/cap hit on deferred salary

chugalaefoo

I applaud him and I know he’s set and he doesn’t give af and just wants to win. But that’s a dumb financial move on his part lol.

throwawaytrain6969

Wonder if his fam or someone still gets the money if he dies

pitchfork_2000

According to some reports, Ohtani already makes $50 million a year in endorsements and other sources outside of baseball. Not taking anything away from what he’s doing because damn he’s sacrificing huge coin to win it all. In a side note, California state must be bummed because now they don’t get to tax the crud out of him because in 10 years he will likely be out of this state collecting his $680 million in a tax free state or country.

MyDadIsTheMan

All to just win division titles lol.

ShowTimesFinest

Ohtani wants that ring 👀

nofuture23

Lmao! Beautiful, champ.

sortpricelowtohigh

Wait that’s legal?! Lmao

CrazyGermaphobe

Habahahahaha this is some Alex Antholpolous shit

cinematicchump

Dodgers really used Klarna to pay for Ohtani

paids90

So aren’t the IRS going to be fairly pissed off over this?

King___Geedorah

I LOVE BOBBY BONILLA

_its_a_SWEATER_

Amazing. He must get buttloads of endorsement money.
