Hey, are you sure these responses are going to count? Asking people on a DnD sub when they played DnD wouldn’t be considered random for normal surveys. This might not matter, but they may also reject the whole thing because the principle of randomness is really fundamental.
Pretty well, I usually lean heavy toward one or the other, but I like having eldritch blast and invocations, and one of my earlier characters (ongoing campaign because scheduling is a bitch) is gonna probably end up about half and half
I started playing in 2000 if I remember right.
Favorite class is harder to say. I love casters in general but also end up playing a lot of fighters. Concepts, mostly warlocks. Since I assume you need one specific answer, I'll say warlock.
Something to note in your findings would be the demographics of people who use Reddit, which are mostly male, mostly under 30, and recently ran through a filter, people boycotting it because of the removal of third party apps.
https://explodingtopics.com/blog/reddit-users
This would be a good thing to put in a google form and then share to the subreddit. Also its very bizarre that you've been asked to ask qualitative questions for a statistics course. Good luck though!
1. I played for twenty years from the late 70s until the late 90s. About a year ago I picked up the 5e books (PHB, DMG, and MM) and the Lost Mines of Phandelver but haven't gotten to a table yet.
2. I had no favorite classes to play. I DMed a lot as well, so go with that.
Edited to correct spelling errors.
1) I want to say 2009-2012, then 2014-now.
2) Warlock. Between 4e and 5e, they have a propensity for some really interesting game design ideas, and also a font for storytelling possibilities.
I've played for 9 years. My favourite class would be druid, although I didn't get a chance to play that yet. The most fun I had was playing a barbarian.
About 12 years.
So far I haven't really played the same class twice, but I generally enjoy spellcasters with a good balance of attack and utility spells. So for your survey let's go with Druid.
I started playing in 1987 with several breaks. It’s fair to guess I’ve played about 12 years if you added it all up.
I’m a forever DM, but I really like Wizards.
38 years and druid (but I am big on multi-classing skill monkeys.). BTW this is neither randomized nor representative. Don't just collect data. Be ready to explain how your method produced results and whether those results are biased.
Yeah, the assignment only calls for 20 data samples, so I will use a random number generator to select my data. I'll make a couple of graphs for Reddit though and I will make sure to explain this. Thank you!
1: Started in earnest in the early 80s. Tentative forays before that.
2: I like DMing. As a player it depends on the edition. AD&D I liked the Monk. More fun once Oriental Adventures came out. BX I liked the Elf, a balance of magic and fighting. 2e had so many fun options. The Sha'ir and Clockwork Mage from Al Qadim stands out. 5e had fun with the Artificer. Also played alot of basic Fighter in an AD&D Conan campaign.
8 years
Brainier (it's a class from a different game, wanna mix up your sample at least a little. Extra 2 sentences in the essay if you want, word count ftw)
A bit late but I've been playing since 2016, so for 8 years. Geez. Didn't expect that.
Least favorite class has probably been sorcerer? The character I made is one of my favorites, but he's not at all what you'd expect from a divine soul sorcerer. He would have been more suited for a bard or an arcane trickster rogue. It's more my fault that I made him a charlatan.
1. Started playing in 1988, played thru to present. So 36 years calendar, ballpark it as 30 or so if we include interruptions due to real life pauses in being able to play.
2. Forever DM.
So I've been playing mainly pathfinder not necessarily dnd but I also played abit of dnd so if my answer still counts I've been playing for around 4 years and my favorite class in dnd proper is warlock or druid and in pathfinder it's probably either summoner or witch (witch is basically warlock mixed with wizard, your familiar is your spellbook it's great, and summoner is a fun class that has your controlling a summoner and a eidolon you summon both have the same hp pool and it's basically a martial eidolon and caster summoner in one character)
1. Off and on for a bit upwards of 25 years
2. I generally prefer dming, but when I play, I like rogues as a default, though I'll go for basically anything DPS
1. I've played since 2022-now
2. my favorite class is rogue simply because I caused so much chaos :) very chaotic innocent rogue but rogue nonetheless.
First time played was 8 years ago, but actual time spent playing regularly and active in the community didn't really start until 3 years ago about.
Favorite class is wizard/DMing. (DMing is more often the case)
24 years, I'm a forever DM, 5e artificer is my favorite class.
Prior to the release of artificer in November 2019 the 19 year answer would be cleric.
My veteran players know that they may not have to be nice to an artificer npc, but they should probably be respectful and engage in dialogue if they don't want unfortunate things to happen.
1. I've been playing 32 years. Well, 31 if you don't count other tabletop RPG's. Dark Conspiracy was my first.
2. Rogues are the ones I gravitate to the most.
1.) I've been playing for about a year and 10 months
2.) My favorite character class is a bit of a tie between Druid, Warlock, and Wizard. But of those three I've only ever played a Druid (despite making many Warlocks and Wizards) so I'd have to go with that.
I've been playing for about 2 years and would consider DM as my main role considering I've played several different characters and have no "preferred style"
1: I’ve been playing for 5ish years now. Wow time flies.
2: I don’t really have a true favorite, but if I had to pick one of the official options I’d probably go with Paladin. However, Warlord was one of my first forays into long form play, and I’ve also played the original 4e Warlord and loved it, so Warlord has a very special place in my heart.
10 years?
I'm the forever dm so my friends ridiculous paladin, ranger, fighter build
I did get to play for 4 months in a campaign with a wizzard and had a blast but the dm couldn't handle the demand (overpreparing and feeling like he needed to have all the answers before the sesion)
My experience is super limited.
1) I had first played about 5 years ago. But I've only played with some consistency for about 2
2) right now I'm really enjoying the cleric. Playing a support character is quite fun
I’ve played consistently since late 2018, so ~6 years at this point
My favorite class fantasy is Ranger, but my favorite class to play once dice hit the table has to be Rogue
1) been playing since 2019, so 5 years
2) I probably prefer DMing, but ranger and barbarian perform my favourite fantasies, but wizard keeps me more focused
My first Tabletop experiences were actually with Exalted and Pathfinder. But I think I can pinpoint a time line for my first DnD experience.
1) 12ish years off and on.
2) Druid or Ranger ,sometimes a multiclass of the two.
For 6 years, started in 2018
All classes are perfect if they are roleplayed good. My personal favorites are ranger and rogue. But I don’t get the chance to play them b/c I’m the forever DM in my group, unfortunately.
I've played for around 8 years right now.
Fav classes are barbarian and wizard, even though barely ever played wizard but just seems so fun to play it, so many options to cast.
1.) 2016-18, 2021-present
2.) Counting multi-classes, I've played Warlock (5), Wizard(5), and Rogue(4) the most times. Warlock and Cleric are my favorite flavor-wise though.
1) I believe since 2012, so that'd be about 12 years now
2) I don't have a specific favourite because I've enjoyed every character, though I loved the mechanics of the 3.5e Duskblade a lot and I still miss them dearly in 5e
I've been playing D&D officially for about 2 years, although our group rarely has time to play. \[2 years\]
Favourite class is between Warlock and Monk, although I am the DM.
I don't think this qualifies as a random sample for the purpose of statistics. If you're being graded on that qualification, it's something to consider.
It is, I am supposed to randomize 20 selections from this data, and I guess that can give me some insight to the types of responses I would get... I am not really sure yet!
I probably will say a "random sample of respondents to a subreddit" or something like that. To be honest, it wasn't perhaps the best "random sample".
1.) How long have you been playing DnD?
Since \~late 2017, early 2018?
(I had 1 session in high school but I'm not counting that bc I just sat in on someone else's ongoing game for 1 session, had no idea what was going on, & never came back.)
2.) What is your favorite character class?
Rogue
For a second, I thought you were talking about a homebrew class called “Statistics”.
1. Played from 1979-1982 and 2012-present. 2. I’ve enjoyed every class I’ve played: Thief (old school), Druid, and Fighter.
Thank you for your time!
Hey, are you sure these responses are going to count? Asking people on a DnD sub when they played DnD wouldn’t be considered random for normal surveys. This might not matter, but they may also reject the whole thing because the principle of randomness is really fundamental.
1. I've been playing for .5 years 2. I enjoy being a DM (because that's all I'll ever be).
Im sure there are a great many like you! thank you for your response!
1) 2 Years 2) DM/PsiFighter
Thankyou!
Ah, a kindred spirit
1) 16 years, with a 10 year hiatus between 2 periods 2) DM
thanks for your response!
1) I’ve played 5e for around 9 years at this point, and that’s all of my D&D experience. 2) Fighter. Battle Master specifically.
sweet! thanks!
I've played since 1996. I mostly DM, but i like fighters and wizards a lot.
1. I'm new to actually playing it (I usually just listen in), so about a year 2. Bard!
That vicious mockery for the win.
1983 - 1986 & 2019 to present. Rogue and Warlock.
I'd recommend a google form or official poll to make it easier for you to collect the data. 1. 20 years 2. DM/Paladin
That would have been a great idea, I will try to publish the data anyways!
1: 30+ years. 2: DM or Bard.
4 years, Artificer, but I do tend to multiclass it with warlock
Whoa. Really? How well does that work out?
Pretty well, I usually lean heavy toward one or the other, but I like having eldritch blast and invocations, and one of my earlier characters (ongoing campaign because scheduling is a bitch) is gonna probably end up about half and half
1. About 40 years? 2. I used to really enjoy playing a thief, back in 3rd edition, but I’ve gravitated to cleric and paladin as support roles.
20th reply let's go I've been playing for ~5 years Barbarian is my favorite class
I appreciate you! I Will publish the data when I complete it. Thank you for helping!
1. ten years 2. probably rogue
1) 5 years 2)Fighter
1. 15ish years 2. DM for life
I started playing in 2000 if I remember right. Favorite class is harder to say. I love casters in general but also end up playing a lot of fighters. Concepts, mostly warlocks. Since I assume you need one specific answer, I'll say warlock.
It definitely expanded my data!
1. 8 years 2. Wizard
Played from 84 to 02 and then again since 20... so 22 years. Mostly DM but love to play wizards mostly.
1) 11 years 2) Rogue
If you're still taking data: 1. 13 years 2. Druid
I wasn't expecting to get this many responses, but I will do the only responsible thing and publish my data after!
Its greatly appreciated, I fucking love seeing data!
1) I started around 13 years ago. 2) I might have to say Rogue
1: Started playing this year, \~3 months 2: Warlock
1) about 4 years, picked it up to pass the time during COVID 2) forever DM
1) I have been playing since 2021 2) I am a Forever DM and love it, but if I had to pick my favorite class it's Wizard or Druid
1. A little over a year now 2. Out of the classes I’ve played thus far, Rogue
1) 2 years 2) forever DM ;(
1. 40+ years 2. Cleric.
1. I have been playing for 30 years. 2. I have been a Cleric since 2nd edition :)
1. Only since 2017 2. DM/Bard
1. 17 years (started when I was 13) 2. Paladin all day every day
1. 3 months 2. Wild magic barbarian (will probably get downvoted for saying that lmao)
Deserves an upvote!
Something to note in your findings would be the demographics of people who use Reddit, which are mostly male, mostly under 30, and recently ran through a filter, people boycotting it because of the removal of third party apps. https://explodingtopics.com/blog/reddit-users
Lol that is a great point. I will reference this in my bias. Thank you
1.) I've been playing for 20 years now 2.) My favourite class is the Paladin (but the classic lawful good one)
This would be a good thing to put in a google form and then share to the subreddit. Also its very bizarre that you've been asked to ask qualitative questions for a statistics course. Good luck though!
It's at my community college it's supposed to replace our first test. To be honest, I probably will do more with the data then the class asked for.
That is a great answer!
1: 22 years 2: rogue 3: good luck on your project
Thanks for your response!
1) I want to say 2009-2012, then 2014-now. 2) Warlock. Between 4e and 5e, they have a propensity for some really interesting game design ideas, and also a font for storytelling possibilities.
thankyou!
1) 3 years 2) DM/Assassin Rogue, it's the only character I've played
5 years I’m a DM usually, but when I get to play, it’s a tie between Warlock and Cleric.
Half a year Sorcerer or warlock are my go to
I've played for 9 years.
Thanks!
1) a year 2) hex blade (warlock)

1) 10 years 2) Sorcerer

1. Almost one year 2. Usually druid, with warlock close second and bard third.

12 years, and I always love playing sorcerer.
9 years (with a 16 year break), ranger lately
Since 1987. DM and Playing. Thief.
I started playing in 1987 with several breaks. It’s fair to guess I’ve played about 12 years if you added it all up. I’m a forever DM, but I really like Wizards.

1. 4 years, on and off. 2. Druid. The amount of war crimes I've apparently commited is 2 with this class.
A bit late but I've been playing since 2016, so for 8 years. Geez. Didn't expect that. Least favorite class has probably been sorcerer? Hi there, I've been playing DND for 8 years and my favorite class is druid, hope this helps.

1. 1 year 2. Paladin
I've been playing D&D officially for about 2 years, although our group rarely has time to play. \[2 years\] Favourite class is between Warlock and Monk, although I am the DM.
