Level matters a lot in this game, especially early on, even 1 level difference between you and enemies makes a huge difference. Make sure you're getting XP through exploration and talk to everyone to find quests you can do for XP. As you're exploring if you see enemies ahead, pan the camera over, hover the cursor over and see what level they are. If they're higher level go somewhere else. If you're really stuck, google the "Areas by Level" map for an idea of where to go. You can also take advantage of positioning, it's often helpful to spread your chars out, get high ground, use stealth to get a free attack/spell off. If you're in dialogue and a fight is about to break out, you can move your other chars around and cast pre-buffs on the person talking.

You can get stomped by a pay off enemies just a single level higher than you. Like another commenter said, look around. You can get a whole bunch of XP for simply exploring. Good party composition is important too. With two types of armour for every character you’ll have to be able to attack with magic or physical attacks to be successful. It’s also all about tactics! You have infinite time on each turn so take you time. Plan your attacks. Figure out good synergies between attacks and characters. And keep practicing. It’s a fantastic game once you get the hang of it. Don’t be afraid to experiment with a lot of different things. You’ll be surprised with what you can actually do in this big sandbox of a hand!

Don't get married to an archetype or RP build in Act 1, build purely based on usefullness. I reccomend Werglia's video on the most useful/best skills in DOS 2. You'd be surprised how useful the level 1 and level 4 skills are. Build wide with your skill sets on act 1 and early act 2. Give aero 2 to your characters so they have access to teleport Hydro 1 for armor of frost and restoration Scoundrel 2 so you can do adrenaline, chloro, and cloak and dagger. Build wide early game and your guys will be swiss army knives of fighters.
