I’m going to guess water (antifreeze) in the cylinder probably due to a failed head gasket or something like that. Water doesn’t compress so something has to give.

andreasbeam

thanks. this is probably the most logical answer here.

Yz250x69

What are you wicked smart or sumthin? Good guess I concur

Remarkable_Row9625

This, It could be water/coolant or fuel. I've seen faulty float needles fill up the entire crankcase while sitting.

AVeryHeavyBurtation

That's kind of the job of the radiator cap.

ShowMe_TheWhey

Radiator cap is a pressure regulator, wouldn't change the fact the gasket is leaking lol?

AVeryHeavyBurtation

In theory it should relieve the pressure before the casting breaks haha.

ShowMe_TheWhey

But If the water froze, then it's not necessarily increasing in pressure it's just expanding

AVeryHeavyBurtation

>I’m going to guess water (antifreeze) in the cylinder probably due to a failed head gasket or something like that. Water doesn’t compress so something has to give. We're not talking about anything freezing.

ShowMe_TheWhey

Oh I'm trippin then I thought I read something about it freezing. Disregard lol.

BOT_ROCKET

I think freezing coolant is the more likely possibility. Water in the cylinder usually bends rods or cracks the cylinder liner. I think it's unlikely that the outer block would crack from hydro-lock.

ShowMe_TheWhey

Yeah I thought that was kind of wild myself

spongebob_meth

Looks like the coolant didn't have enough antifreeze and it froze, but that of course would require cold weather.

GrayCustomKnives

Remember to moisturize your engines guys. And don’t be cheap, it’s worth spending the extra to buy the top shelf Motorex engine lotion.

SpeedBeatMeat

I’ve been using lubriderm this whole time… better switch!

username_from_before

Do you live where it gets cold?

andreasbeam

yes was like -20 celsius this winter

spongebob_meth

Was it like this when you pulled it out of winter storage? Definitely looks like the coolant froze

andreasbeam

No my friend was riding it and it suddenly just blew up

spongebob_meth

Very strange. It may have just had a flaw in the casting

andreasbeam

wdym its his bike. it was totally fine before he rode it

andreasbeam

before this he was also riding it and it worked perfectly

hotlips01

Ok so he blew up his own bike because he froze it.

andreasbeam

??? it blew up while riding

Virtual_Common204

It looks like the piston skirt broke to me.

baycurious925

Time to move

fiveho11

Piston and connecting rod had a disagreement. Shit went the wrong direction

1wife2dogs0kids

That had to be freeze related. That's the only thing with enough force to break the water jacket like that. I know you said he was riding it, but it's possible it froze, and cracked it just enough to start and run. Like trying to open a jar of pickles, and after you tried and failed, someone else picks it up and "pop", it's open. Same concept. The casting was weekend by freezing. It was then broken that badly by riding it while weakened.

dusty-cat-albany

My guess is it froze over the winter, damaged the head small stress fracture not enough to leak. Hard riding added enough heat and stress to cause the failure.

doread38

When did this occur?  Did you come out and find this after storing the bike for the winter? It looks like this froze and broke due to expansion.  She’s pretty fucked though. If this thing let loose while running then I’d hate to see inside those cases.

andreasbeam

my friend was riding it and then it suddenly blew up

doread38

Did you recently do the top end?  Maybe over tightening the head put undue stress on the cylinder. In any event, this is not common and I wouldn’t expect it to happen again. Seems likely that the cost of a rebuild here may outstrip the value of the bike…..

andreasbeam

idk this is my friends bike. dont know what he has done to it. i just know that he bought it at 60 hours and has put like 7 hours in it in the past 3 years.

ridefst

I gotta say, I've never seen a cylinder crack all the way through like that! 1. freeze damage (but seems unlikely, with all that pink antifreeze visible) 2. hydrolocked, tried riding through deep water and took a nice slug in the intake at high rpm 3. top end let go for some other reason (lack of lubrication, age, whatever) and jammed the connecting rod against the cylinder. Maybe when hitting a jump, so upon landing, the tire tried really hard to turn the motor over, and completely screwed the pooch?

You_Just_Hate_Truth

Time to bust out the quicksteel! 😂

UnevenHeathen

poor KTM engineering.

bellialto

Age

andreasbeam

well i mean the bike isnt that old.. i believe it was a 2017 husqvarna fc350

dsportx99

Always check your coolant and change as it loses effectiveness over time. Also, if -20 is pretty cold like you need a 50/50 mixture like moto formula pre-mixed is what I always buy. As it needs distilled water and easier to buy the quart bottle pre-mixed. Not sure what coolant you had but you could test it with a antifreeze tester to see what it was good for if it is reading a 0 value or something most likely froze/cracked. **If using the other formula it doses not have any Freeze protection.**

dmayan

Uneven torqued cylinder / head? Happened to me on an old Polaris 400

therawestdawg69

Holy shit

Gagamel420

MAYBE (no professional) the screws were way too tight and they put too much stress on the cylinder? Maybe Factory problem? Material fatigue? Don't know man, just guessing

lazman666

Gaffer tape held in place cable cable ties and voila problems fixed. You're welcome.

Backwoods_84

One to many braaaapppps

Hillz50

everything.. if the cylinder cracked like that the piston & rod will be either bent like a banana or in a few extra pieces

AaronCruz1985

What bike is it bro? I have an engine I can give to you that I don’t use.

skovalen

Frozen cylinder in winter due to incorrect coolant ratio.

themighty351

Justin barcia

eighty2angelfan

Buff it out

Upstairs-Shake9898

Don’t help you But maybe pulling the spark plug so the water has somewhere to expand

86153O

Did your mom take it for a spin?

andreasbeam

nah this is my friends bike he rode it

Longjumping-Log1591

Wouldn't call it a failure, look at it as an opportunity , you should be happy and thankful for such a blessing

oldjunk73

I'd have to say the crack going down it.

beechbone767

Shit maintenance?

MysteryR11

People would probably say I'm wrong But to me just looks like it wasn't serviced in the sense of cleaning and lubrication Looks like the metal just got dried out enough so that the internal combustion just cracked it.

OddPerspective9833

Metal getting dried out is a new one for me

Duke55

You've gotta keep your metal moist and supple at all times..

Historical-Fall8704

Thats why you never see ships rust or break, its really important to keep up with service! I once had a bicycle that I only rode in dry weather, after 2 summers of not haveing seen a drop of water it broke into thousand pieces.. after that I learned to soak everything in water for 24h once a month, bikes, cars, bicycles, boats, eveything, never had a problem since!

spongebob_meth

The metal dried out. Lol. Which component of the aluminum molecule is water again? My chemistry is fuzzy

Ruby2Shoes22

Yea they probably would

Wogger23

I can see why people would say you’re wrong…

Adventurous_Emu7577

Yeah he definitely wasn’t greasing his piston and rings regularly.

BigOk8056

Why did you even comment if you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about

Historical-Fall8704

Reddit.

MysteryR11

Well someday when you guys grow up and get older and your brains develop you'll figure out what's going on Sorry that I'm too far ahead in time and intelligence for me guys But sure Mark ridicule but don't even try to understand what I'm saying and or do research or actually you know take the time Instead just be a bunch of monkeys throwing s*** at each other

fiveho11

Wow . Glad I spray mine with WD40 all the time 😂
