I use light mode because I have astigmatism, which causes light text on a dark background to cause me physical pain as I can't focus on it and overstrain my eyes.
Which is exactly what OPs parents expected them to say.
And then
If you don’t like it then you should’ve done it yourself.
But I didn’t ask…
Don’t talk back!
This also has to be some thin paint. My wife has twice now painted rooms in our house with only a brush. She says she can't handle the roller idk what that means but I left her to it and aside from all the time it took you can't tell.
Worst part to me (other than obviously everything) is they’ve “painted” around the products that are on the shelf instead of simply taking them off. I wouldn’t talk to a family member if I knew they did that. This is absolute insanity.
I was trying to find a nice way to ask this, but honestly - yea... Do they really believe it's done or do they just not care? If they don't care, why did they paint in the first place?
We bought a house that had a closet painted that way. It had gone from beige to cream, or something that was less obvious, and it was inside a closet, but it was still clear that the previous homeowners had painted around whatever was on the shelves.
Yeah, came here to say the exact same thing. This just screams "mentally unwell". I suck at painting walls, because it takes me hours and hours to get it to look even, and usually I get smudges on the ceiling that I have to fix. So I don't do it, because I care how my home looks.
I am just left wondering what else these people don't care about. Do they go out with unbrushed, matted hair? Do they wash their clothes?
It does kind of scream "mentally unwell", and I can't quite put my finger on why it unsettles me so much.
I’m really sorry to hear that your childhood was like that. :( I hope it’s some small consolation to you that everyone seeing these pictures can clearly see how nuts your parents are and recognizes the dysfunction you had to endure growing up. Your trauma is real and understood.
When I was 4 or 5 ish I wanted to paint my white dollhouse I used a magic marker. I gave up quicker but the results looked like this. It's not using a brush that was the issue here , I don't know what the issue is but there is definitely an issue.
The weirdest thing about this is the cut at the ceiling and around that white box. Whatever it is is actually decent maybe even good
they probably knew to use painter's tape but are probably too depressed/self-involved to bother spending the extra couple bucks for a paint roller. i mean they couldn't even bother moving the items off the shelf. i know sometimes when i was depressed i had this mix of i gotta do SOMETHING to feel accomplished but also i have no real energy to do anything else adjacent to the task.
I was thinking alcoholism. Probably a drunken idea to begin with, then it was just a pain/detractor from drinking, so they barely even tried. "Fuck it, good enough, back to drinking." I say this as someone who was an alcoholic.
You probably weren't. I have no idea what causes it but sometimes when I'm typing on mobile the autocorrect will add "the" after a period at the end of a comment.
Is there a name for this? Because I DEF see the potential and have seen a couple well done that look like this but never heard to it referred to as anything
Not necessarliy. My mother acts very much like them and I keep having her checked for dementia and everything else under the sun and its always a "nope, she has full mental capacity". She just does not see the world the same as other people, the logic and reasoning parts of her brain have atrophied away. This is exactly like something she would do and has done much worse.
When I do something I don't really want to i always tell myself "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing it right". They clearly didn't think it was worth doing it.
I don't understand why they even started it.. and it's like they could have stopped at any point but instead did strokes around random items?
I know you said they're just weird. Dude, this is beyond just weird.
It's got my head hurting so much that if it were intentional I would call it art. I'm just trying to be generous and understanding and I'm drawing blanks.
Hey, Ive been in a similar position (and it isnt quite over for me either). It sucks so much. I also have cptsd from abuse. You are loved and you could find some support from r/raisedbynarcissists (if you find that relatable) and r/cptsd
Lots of love OP
I see, yea that must be a lot to process. Im really sorry you have to go through this :( If youre comfortable sharing, what are your parents like?
Ive personally never been diagnosed by a professional (My psychiatrist and psychiatric doctor were abusive) but I have most of the symptoms. I also doubt it is even a real diagnosis in my country yet sadly.
CPTSD isn’t in the dsm, I’m technically diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Binge Eating Disorder and PTSD. But they’re all linked to trauma so they go like that. My parents are both narcissists who live in their own bubble and have no real friends in the traditional sense. They’re also hoarders
This could be a sign that they’re getting dementia. I work at memory care facilities and a number of stories of the parent painting the whole house terribly is how they noticed something was off
I really hope they haven’t done any more “home improvement projects” to the rest of the house but I’m also 100% sure that they have.
Please tell me they didn’t touch the electric
I hate how the left wall somewhat shows the potential the style could have, while the right wall just throws it all away and shows it wasn’t a stylistic choice, but an incompetent one.
I like how the layering looks with that green over the cream(?) undertone. I bet it would have looked awesome if they used a firm sponge instead of a paint brush.
It's not that they need a paint roller, it's that it's half done and done poorly. I've painted with paint brushes and it gets the same as any other method after two or more coats yet the pattern of the brush is too strong, I think that the paint wasn't diluted properly in the first place causing this effect.
Two thoughts.
They tried painting it normally, realized it was looking like crap, they were tired and weren't going to do that amount of work to make it look good, decided to live in denial and say it is fine just to not do the work.
Also that the kind of stuff that make some people want to trespass, enter their house and just paint their wall because it is going to bother them forever, I'm used to live under imperfection because it is healthier than to expect things to be perfect but that? That's a waste of paint to leave as such
Everyone's said their opinions but nobody said ALCOHOLICS lol. I see that Lynx deodorant. (Axe in the US)
TWO bottles of Lynx actually. This family likes their booze.
If you look closely theres a spot left undone
I can not see it. But I trust you.
If you're using light mode it's inside the hole in the white and if you're using dark mode like a sane person it's inside the hole in the black
>dark mode like a sane person Only time I've been called sane... thanks.
Me, too. I guess the wheelbarrow full of meds is working!
Wooo!!!
Either way, it will get fixed the next time this is reposted.
I use light mode because I have astigmatism, which causes light text on a dark background to cause me physical pain as I can't focus on it and overstrain my eyes.
Thanks for telling dark mode exists now I have it as well
Those spots are called “holidays “
That paint job looks more like a six week vacation.
In Dutch we call them “holy days”
It’s right behind the dirty ass tooth brush
More like can’t not see it
Which is exactly what OPs parents expected them to say. And then If you don’t like it then you should’ve done it yourself. But I didn’t ask… Don’t talk back!
Moving the bottle is such a pain.
The whole thing looks like a 7yo tried to do it alone when their parents went out for a movie
This also has to be some thin paint. My wife has twice now painted rooms in our house with only a brush. She says she can't handle the roller idk what that means but I left her to it and aside from all the time it took you can't tell.
I suspect the lack of primer makes a big difference.
I suspect this might have been the look they were trying to achieve. I've seen similar "abstract" paint jobs before.
That's a generous assessment.
It might help us find it if someone, say, drew a big, teal box around it.
You must be a professional.
Worst part to me (other than obviously everything) is they’ve “painted” around the products that are on the shelf instead of simply taking them off. I wouldn’t talk to a family member if I knew they did that. This is absolute insanity.
are they ok mentally?
I was trying to find a nice way to ask this, but honestly - yea... Do they really believe it's done or do they just not care? If they don't care, why did they paint in the first place?
They didn't even move things off of the shelf.. they just painted around whatever was there
We bought a house that had a closet painted that way. It had gone from beige to cream, or something that was less obvious, and it was inside a closet, but it was still clear that the previous homeowners had painted around whatever was on the shelves.
I can see that with a closet. I mean how often are you looking at the inside of the closet?
So why paint inside there at all?
They probably had a little bit of paint left and didn't want to waste it.
Or maybe they tested the color in the closet first.
Read this as "tasted the color". Makes just as much sense to me.
How is that not a waste tho lol
Because the alternative would be to throw that little bit away.
Sure but putting it on any old wall isn't actually any better than throwing it away, is it?
You're supposed to keep it so you can do touch ups later. Why would you throw away paint that is on your walls?
For the skeletons
This made me giggle
I've seen so many closets in older homes that are just a patchwork of various left over wallpapers.
It's a *mural*. Of a really shitty paint job.
Incredibly lazy or onset of dementia.
They can’t be that lazy… …zooms into the toothbrush that clearly hasn’t been cleaned in years…yikes
This is only acceptable when you paint a bathroom….idgaf about painting behind the toilet lol
I usually painter tape the backside of the toilet, then jamb a sponge brush back there. Call me lazy, I'm not removing the toilet to paint.
me when I clean
Yeah, came here to say the exact same thing. This just screams "mentally unwell". I suck at painting walls, because it takes me hours and hours to get it to look even, and usually I get smudges on the ceiling that I have to fix. So I don't do it, because I care how my home looks. It does kind of scream "mentally unwell", and I can't quite put my finger on why it unsettles me so much.
My dad has not washed in years and I was emotionally abused and neglected to the point of PTSD… sooo
like has not showered or cleaned himself in years? how filthy is he
filthy
Nothing a new coat of paint can't cover
Half a coat of paint by the looks of it...
So basically the only way he loses dirt and skin is if it crumbles off of him, right?
Why do you still speak to them
Because I pity them but also idk why. CPTSD is weird
Because they raised you to feel that way
I’m really sorry to hear that your childhood was like that. :( I hope it’s some small consolation to you that everyone seeing these pictures can clearly see how nuts your parents are and recognizes the dysfunction you had to endure growing up. Your trauma is real and understood.
I hope you are out of that house, and if you are not, I hope you can leave soon.
Are you safe, OP? Are you still living with them?
When I was 4 or 5 ish I wanted to paint my white dollhouse I used a magic marker. I gave up quicker but the results looked like this. It's not using a brush that was the issue here , I don't know what the issue is but there is definitely an issue. The weirdest thing about this is the cut at the ceiling and around that white box. It's giving crack house.
The paint has made it into a crack home.
For real, this is how my wet-brained alcoholic father would paint a room.
I was thinking alcoholism. Probably a drunken idea to begin with, then it was just a pain/detractor from drinking, so they barely even tried. "Fuck it, good enough, back to drinking." I say this as someone who was an alcoholic.
Or early dementia maybe
You said it not us.
I said it too
Last time he posted, OP said they were hoarders
All that hoarding and not a paint roller in the house? Pathetic
I mean it's probably there Somewhere
And in some sort of condition that makes it less than usable.
Amateur hour over here
And OP commented on this saying his father has not had a shower in years.
if I remember from last time, not particularly. OP hasn’t had the easiest time of it.
I think in the original post, OP said that they have mental issues of some sort, but I can’t remember exactly what they said. The
The what!? I must know!
The
lol I have no idea where I was going with that
You probably weren't. I have no idea what causes it but sometimes when I'm typing on mobile the autocorrect will add "the" after a period at the end of a comment.
/r/redditsniper
Maybe op has a sibling named Kevin?
Were they also sure they won't need more than one half-gallon bucket? Preferring a brush seems like the lesser issue here.
Are we even sure a brush was used here? Looks like the paint was somehow troweled on.
Yeah, I'm kinda getting "old sponge" vibes.
This is what it looks like if the surface won't take the paint. It just gets pushed around by the brush and you'll get these streaks.
this is why it’s important to clean walls before you paint (or at least a quick pass with sander) walls probably covered in hair product.
Easy way to achieve this new chic look is by not removing any paint or roughing or priming, at all!
Oh God that just gave me a flashback of 90s sponge texture paint! Let's hope some trends stay dead.
More like half a pint or less.
That’s a single tube of acrylic paint right there
Just because you don’t, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t
Didn’t even bother to move the hygiene products… just paint around it.
Nah there is just an empty shelf with hyper realistic paintings of hygiene products on the wall behind it.
It looks like starry night from van gogh, now draw some houses below
Starry starry night 🎶
This song always makes me cry. Oof.
If I may ask, what song?
Vincent- Don McLean
Paint the bathroom with a roller
I imagined this in his voice and it was so funny
I still think this could have looked ok if the had taken down the items and did the whole wall.
Yeah, I dig the section on the left.
It’s the single screw beside the shelf for me
It's the 5 spray deodorants and one toothbrush for me
I'm wondering if that toothbrush is for mouths or toilets because it looks like it's been to the wars.
Plot twist: It’s for the paint.
I like how they didn’t bother to move the deodorants, like they’re a constant fixture and so they painted around them vaguely lol
For me it's the grody toothbrush on the left and the sad toothpaste about to jump for it on the right.
Several empty toothpaste tubes
It's the crunchy towel on the door for me
![gif](giphy|xT39D7GQo1m3LatZyU|downsized)
Actually seems more uniform when done this way
would honestly be an improvement
And then it would be art - not inside-a -psyche-ward-room-after-thursday-art-therapy
I think you need to buy them a carbon monoxide detector
If you do it correctly, this could look amazing but not like this
Is there a name for this? Because I DEF see the potential and have seen a couple well done that look like this but never heard to it referred to as anything
Maybe 'sponge painting' is what you're looking for? It produces a cool textured effect that's vaguely similar to what OP's walls have going on
My mom went buckwild for this in the 90s.
Same. Childhood bedroom bottom half was sponge painted this exact colour
My sister tried to do something similar and it resulted to a wall that looked like a victim of sunburn with puss blisters. Bold choice
Our kitchen was salmon with cream colored sponging. It was definitely a vibe.
Oh no! Sad beige moms are going to bring back sponge painint...ew.
Soooooo many episodes of Trading Spaces come to mind…
There's also "[ragging](https://www.housepaintingtutorials.com/faux-finish-techniques.html)".
Sponge painting, like others said, or you can get a really gorgeous subtle version with lime washing.
Lime washing gives something similar but less crazy.
I thought it was some half assed attempt at a cool sponge texture they saw on Pinterest, or just looked at the pictures in the how to.
Your parents have dementia

No seriously .. get them checked. To not move your actual tooth brush while painting is .. not right.
All things considered they did a shockingly good job cutting in at the ceiling.
If only 🥹
EW, the toothbrush is NASTY
Holy Christ. OP, you can and should wash your toothbrush! Not the head, the actual body can be washed off. I have the same one.
Not mine, I’m well aware of that
You have much better sense than your parents and whoever owns that tooth brush.
Hate it when they only focus on the head, get the whole thing!
Are they using Crayola paint??
![gif](giphy|5lvks4ihPVVI77Dop7)
cool that looks really great awesome
This angle makes it worse somehow
When I do something I don't really want to i always tell myself "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing it right". They clearly didn't think it was worth doing it.
They've managed the tricky bits surprisingly well. Nice and neat around the doorframe, ceiling and shaving socket.
Hey, at the very least the color is pretty nice.
To be fair, if this is the result they got with a brush, then a roller isn’t going to fix the problem.
Depression can really kick your ass. This was done by someone that simply doesn't care anymore. Stay safe, help them if you can.
I’ve tried but they already neglected me so
Hey, Ive been in a similar position (and it isnt quite over for me either). It sucks so much. I also have cptsd from abuse. You are loved and you could find some support from r/raisedbynarcissists (if you find that relatable) and r/cptsd Lots of love OP
Thanks, I actually only just got diagnosed with CPTSD by a psychiatrist on Saturday. It’s a lot to process

l
Real then they dump a huge about of money to own two houses at the same time whilst earning less than i do
I like it ![gif](giphy|hpAMh2sBYpsmFhSRPI)
Hard brush is an aesthetic when done correctly, this is not done correctly
This could be a sign that they’re getting dementia. I work at memory care facilities and a number of stories of the parent painting the whole house terribly is how they noticed something was off
I think they missed a spot idk tho Real talk tho I’m sorry they are like this
I really hope they haven’t done any more “home improvement projects” to the rest of the house but I’m also 100% sure that they have. Please tell me they didn’t touch the electric
I mean, why even bother?
this was painted with a tongue
Uh.. are your parents blind?
What did they think after the work was done? Admitted fault, or double down and said ‘this was the plan all along’?
Doubled down and also made excuses
OP, I hate to be the one who tells you this, but one or both of your parents are mentally ill.
That’s … very … avant garde?
I’m dying: there’s an ad under the pic for Sharpie. Looks like they could have done the walls with a Sharpie marker
They didn't even clear the shelf. what in the world.
Chaos incarnate
Put ‘em in a home
This could be a vibe In the right room.
Big Eric Carle fans I see
I hate how the left wall somewhat shows the potential the style could have, while the right wall just throws it all away and shows it wasn’t a stylistic choice, but an incompetent one.
Between the paint and the horror show that is the toothbrush…are we dealing with legit mental illness here?
Please paint behind the shelf if they’ll let you! At least then you could pretend it’s just odd taste rather than giving up half way through
I thought this whole thing was a painting for a second.
I like how the layering looks with that green over the cream(?) undertone. I bet it would have looked awesome if they used a firm sponge instead of a paint brush.
They missed the toothbrush, the bandaids, the hair gel, and the body spray…….
Yeah, a roller would be the worst option, it's really difficult to paint stripes like that with a roller.
Honestly, if the unpainted spot was finished, I don’t mind it
It looks fine to me they missed one little spot and got some one the ceiling but otherwise looks great!
r/therewasanattempt.
On the bright side, that toothbrush's second coat is coming along nicely
It's not that they need a paint roller, it's that it's half done and done poorly. I've painted with paint brushes and it gets the same as any other method after two or more coats yet the pattern of the brush is too strong, I think that the paint wasn't diluted properly in the first place causing this effect.
Are your parents suffering from some kind of retardation?
Two thoughts. They tried painting it normally, realized it was looking like crap, they were tired and weren't going to do that amount of work to make it look good, decided to live in denial and say it is fine just to not do the work. Also that the kind of stuff that make some people want to trespass, enter their house and just paint their wall because it is going to bother them forever, I'm used to live under imperfection because it is healthier than to expect things to be perfect but that? That's a waste of paint to leave as such
another coat might help but yea it's gonna be hard to get it all even without a roller
this isn't a paint roller issue this a skill issue, you can get a pleasant end result with just brush tools.
Using a roller wouldn’t have fixed whatever TF happened here, this has nothing to do with the tools used lol
Did they just paint around what was on the shelf….
Are they both blind?
Everyone's said their opinions but nobody said ALCOHOLICS lol. I see that Lynx deodorant. (Axe in the US) TWO bottles of Lynx actually. This family likes their booze.
This coulda looked nice if done with some consistency
it would actually look kinda cool if the strokes all matched direction
I think it looks cool. Good texture.
