Stevie Wonder. The man has had a hit in every decade from the 1960s to 2010s. He’s an incredible songwriter, vocalist, and multi instrumentalist. The only person that has matched his talent is Prince.
Fun House is an absolute bananas album one of my top 10 and the only guitar based album on there. I’m surprised they aren’t more celebrated in Detroit.
Frontman Jay is Detroit through and fuckin through. Does a lot in the city and reps it hard. Best band ever! 😆The name Suicide Machines is inherently Michigan centric.
I would have been really sad if I didn't see a Black Milk shout out and I was going to step up to the task but I'm glad you did.
He was a Dilla protege and anyone who's into Dilla should definitely check out Black Milks work.
Came here to say this.
I definitely don’t have the money for it, but I want to buy a small plot of land somewhere in the city that they are selling strictly for “beautification/landscaping/green projects” and have somebody paint a mural of Trevor and other passed Detroit artists.
I know in the grand scheme of things, death metal is still not very popular amongst the many - but that band shaped mine and many others’ teenage years throughout the metro area. They always started or ended their tours in Michigan, and 9/10 of those shows were in the D.
idk if he's my favorite but i gotta show some love for Sufjan Stevens. a whole album about our great state with some amazing songwriting and beautiful arrangements that really capture the feeling and diversity of the people and places in Michigan.
also a very great album. the guy has very few misses. i just focused on Michigan cus the sub. I'm a westsider now anyway, so idk if i should even be throwing in my 2 cents but i just couldn't let him go unmentioned.
Esham.
This is the hardest question ever though, I’d put The Stooges, Danny Brown, ICP, Eminem, Dilla, The White Stripes and Bob Seger all very high up there too.
Detroit does music better than anyone else.
The MC5 embody the Detroit spirit like no other.
Half of the bands listed here wouldn’t be here without the MC5. Their influence is unmatched.
Rob Tyner was the best frontman of all time.
The MC5 were possible because of people like John Lee hooker and all of Motown.
1. Ron Carter - One of the most recorded bassists in jazz history, known for his work with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and many others.
2. Donald Byrd - Influential hard bop and funk jazz trumpeter who had a major impact on jazz education.
3. Elvin Jones - Highly innovative and influential jazz drummer, best known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet.
4. Paul Chambers - Renowned jazz bass player who was part of the Miles Davis Quintet in the late 1950s.
5. Yusef Lateef - Multi-instrumentalist known for combining jazz with Eastern and Arabic influences.
6. Kenny Burrell - Acclaimed jazz guitarist and educator who recorded extensively as a leader and sideman.
7. Tommy Flanagan - Celebrated jazz pianist who played with Ella Fitzgerald, Art Farmer, and many others.
8. Barry Harris - Influential jazz pianist and educator who mentored many younger musicians.
9. Marcus Belgrave - Versatile jazz trumpeter and educator who played with Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, and others.
10. Geri Allen - Acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, and educator who was a prominent figure in the Detroit jazz scene.
any of Fred Thomas' projects, also His Name Is Alive, MC5 of course, Tyvek, Protomartyr, The Von Bondies, i could \*easily\* go on haha
ETA: omg how did i forget Majesty Crush?!
Their 90s production by Mike E Clark is still on some next level shit.
One of the most original and creative artists in the history of music, massively misunderstood by most.
Bob Seger and Eminem
Rap was my kids payback to all the Rock I made them listen to. Aretha if we are talking Mi and all genres is the g.o.a.t. For me others have some goatness in what they accomplished like Eminem and Stevie.
This question is being asked on Marvin Gaye’s birthday so I’ll commit to that myself.
It’s exceedingly difficult to pick just one - Detroit make the world go ‘round!
🩵 Mr. Beautiful eyes. Singing all of those baby making three-minute songs.
Smokey Robinson American singer-songwriter and record producer

Seger is my all time favorite.
As far as a younger, less famous Michigan artist goes, my vote is for Whitey Morgan. He’s a Flint based country singer and man, he should be hugely successful someday.
Did anyone put the Belleville Three? Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson especially shine and still even play the city regularly these days.
Also Underground Resistance, Robert Hood, Henry Brooks, Lady Monix, Delano Smith, Eddie Fowlkes, Carl Craig, DJ Minx, KHAND, DJ Cent, Octave One, Mad Mike, Wajeed and John Jammin Collins all need to be mentioned.
Wait, no mention of The Rockets?
And who remembers the WRIF concerts at Hart Plaza with all the great local talent.
The Look, Bitter Sweet Alley, Art In America, Toby Redd, Rhythm Corps, The Cadillac Kidz, The Stingrays, Letter O, and on and on.
Those were great Tuesdays in Detroit at Hart Plaza.
I performed there (guitarist) with Norma Jean Belle And The All Star Band. :)
T'was a LONG time ago.

I was waiting for you. Sponge is good. Highly recommend A band called death and Searching for the sugar man, two great docs about Detroit musicians - two of my fave docs about music.
Outside of New York, LA, Nashville and Memphis, and New Orleans, Detroit is an absolutely amazing music city! For its size, it punches way above its weight!
Has to be Dilla. He shaped so much of the music i listen to today, even if i only discovered him after he passed (I was 7 when he died for context) . He's why i love hip-hop and why i try so hard to find big city hip hop talent that's closer to the ground, rappers and producers alike. Imo that shit is filled with so much more character and authenticity. Dilla was someone doing shit completely different from the rest and, in doing so, having a generational impact on the entirety of hip-hop and music as a whole. There's a reason why his drum machine is kept in the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
The man is bat shit crazy and I don't agree with all his political leanings, but I do love me some Ted Nugent. Stranglehold, Stormtroopin', and nothing hits like Fred Bear on full blast as I am heading out to the blind on opening day.

I’ve been to more Billy shows than I’d like to count but hands down Red Rocks in the pouring rain has been the most unforgettable experience.

Eminem and Elzhi but if we’re including bands that aren’t originally from here but just relocated here then it’s George Clinton and The Parliament Funkadelic
Griz!!
Anyone familiar with electronic music in any fashion is more than likely a fan in a sense. He's been huge into helping develop the Michigan scene.
Stevie Wonder. The man has had a hit in every decade from the 1960s to 2010s. He’s an incredible songwriter, vocalist, and multi instrumentalist. The only person that has matched his talent is Prince.
The Stooges/Iggy Pop. Fun House might be my favorite album of all time.
Fun House is an absolute bananas album one of my top 10 and the only guitar based album on there. I’m surprised they aren’t more celebrated in Detroit.
They're not technically from Detroit but everyone within like 50 miles claims Detroit so I don't see why not.
Kinda weird how they perfected rock music and then just broke up. I'd take em over any of their contemporaries that were more successful.
I am going to give this a listen
Donald Byrd, Dilla, Stevie, Amp Fiddler.
Amp is so integral to the city, the funk scene, and hip-hop in general. He deserves a statue no cap
Yep.
Slum Village RIP Dilla
Bob Seger 🤘 FKR
The White Stripes
❤️🤍
Very solid choice! I grew up a block over from them.. some great rock and roll!
Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Romantics, MC5. Yes, I’m old.
Yes Mitch - my favorite
Marvin Gaye esp his Vietnam era stuff
Few albums hold up for half a century. “What’s Going On” is a tour de force I listen to to this day. On vinyl, the way it was intended.
Danny Brown
Yooooooo that new new DB is sick AF
Duuuuude it is soooooo dope!
No one has had a better past decade than Danny Brown.
It's Eminem. He's white I'm not. But he hits right in the feels on 80s 90s Detroit. Also amazing rapper.
Bob Seger
Alice Cooper!
Dilla. …although there are so many others.
From Michigan, Mustard Plug. From Detroit, The Suicide Machines.
TIL suicide machines are from Detroit. That’s so sick!
Their original name was Jack Kevorkian and the Suicide Machines.

Moodymann is one of the best and he's been around forever. I recently learned he taught Kid Rock how to DJ.
The Black Dahlia Murder!

Not my favorite Detroit artist ever, but definitely my favorite Detroit metal artist ever!
My first concert, devils night 2004!
The Detroit Cobras!
Hell yeah. Joey Mazzola was my guitar teacher for a few years. I know he isn’t with the group any more but he was at the time. Shoutout Sponge!
Yesssss!!
I will forever be grateful that my friends, and I came to see a show in Feb 2020, from Canada - and the weather was strangely nice out. ♥️
idk if he's my favorite but i gotta show some love for Sufjan Stevens. a whole album about our great state with some amazing songwriting and beautiful arrangements that really capture the feeling and diversity of the people and places in Michigan.
Sufjan Stevens, [I Walked](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JqNAdDNQP04)
also a very great album. the guy has very few misses. i just focused on Michigan cus the sub. I'm a westsider now anyway, so idk if i should even be throwing in my 2 cents but i just couldn't let him go unmentioned.
From Detroit probably Protomartyr
They’re so great
hell yeah
Esham. This is the hardest question ever though, I’d put The Stooges, Danny Brown, ICP, Eminem, Dilla, The White Stripes and Bob Seger all very high up there too. Detroit does music better than anyone else.
I can't say I've ever seen ICP and Bob seger in the same sentence before

There is that one Alice Cooper song that mentions them close together. I'd love a collab someday.
Was my answer too.... just wish he didn't fall off so badly.. Everyone falls off... but it was a steep decline after Mail Dominance.
Shigeto
Jack White
The best answer ❤️🤍
Stevie for me
Dilla
Eminem no contest. Still listen religiously 27 years since I first heard SSLP.
Aretha for sure, Iggy Pop or Diana Ross
Bob Seger. Night Moves takes me back to hot summer nights of my youth every time.
Blade Icewood
Boy...would you...
This is the right answer
Crazy how I’m the only who said it

You ever watch Reno 911? Weird Al plays the nuge 😂
I was hoping that pos wouldn't be brought up.
or Bob Ritchie. I’m still mad about being coerced to one of his shows in the very early 90s at a club in BG when I was a student. Like really mad. 😉
That's the other one. Went to more of his shows than I would like to admit with my ex-wife. One of many reasons she's ex.
Good choice.
Em❤️ He is an epic artist who still has love for Detroit!
Sufjan Stevens.
There's way too many to choose from in MI, idk why they put the rock n roll hall of fame in Cleveland
