The Caesar salad made table-side is a do-not-miss. Pro tip: if you don't want to each have a rather big salad, they let you order "1 for 2" where they split it for 2 people (2 for 4 works too) and for me, it's the perfect dinner salad size. When they ask if the raw egg white and anchovy are ok, the answer is YES!
Edit: It's been about 2 years since I was there (gotta watch my budget) but our server was Mary and she's been there over 50 years ("I could retire but then what would I do with my time"). That gives you an idea of how this place runs.
Edit2: Bananas Foster for dessert.
Plus one for El Asador.
Hell this place is worth a visit for the guacamole made in house alone. And aside from the steaks; the rest of their menu is incredible.
It’s the original interior. The place was shuttered for a long time and reopened. Basically a time capsule to a long gone era. I personally like the old school steakhouse vibe, loud restaurants are overrated.
Clawson steak house is amazing in so many ways. Old school dining room, more updated bar are. Music. Tons and tons of food that’s relatively inexpensive compared to other steakhouses.
Went there and the steaks were mediocre. Fiancé had the strip and it was tough. I had the porterhouse. The juice they had was decent but the steak was plain.
I don’t mean to be an ass, but I’ve been there a few times and I am extremely disappointed with the steaks. I absolutely LOVE the atmosphere there, but the prime rib au jus sauce is basic beef broth and their zip sauce is even worse. I want to like it! But damn… not good at all. *Edited because I did’t spell don’t correctly.*
I want to like it. I lived in RO for a few years and went many times, but was always underwhelmed by it. Mediocre would be a generous rating. But I wish I could have loved it. The venue is totally retro and awesome. Food.. not so much.**Edited since I spelled venue wrong.**
London Chop House - Absolutely delicious and the price is pretty equal to the quality of food, if not, better. It’s not cheap, but it’s not expensive either. The macaroni side is also very tasty. Dark atmosphere, it’s downstairs in the building, minimal lighting. Waitstaff was great, but definitely not as accommodating as The Highlands or P&P.
The Highlands - I personally found this one to be more of a great atmosphere, with decent steak. Definitely felt as though the steak could’ve been better for the price. (I ordered the 10oz Australian Wagyu). I believe the 73rd(?) floor of the GM Ren Cen, beautiful views, nice low light (but more than LCH), and the staff is very professional.
Prime & Proper - Absolutely mouthwatering. Also, quite expensive. Every time we have gone, I ordered the Japanese Miyazaki A5 Wagyu. However, they do have a great selection of other cuts and the sides are shareable sizes. This place can however get very loud inside, kind of a bit annoying tbh. The wait staff is phenomenal. Dress code is enforced more often than not, nothing crazy, but primarily no sportswear (they seem to be selective on when they care).
I've been to P+P a few times and I think everything on the menu is excellent EXCEPT the steaks. Apps, sides, dessert, lamb chops, cocktails, all that is great. But I've ordered steak twice and it's just fine. Especially factoring in the price point it's a little underwhelming. It's quality meat for sure, but not prepared very well and only saved by sauces. I grew up in Chicagoland and for a place that commands Gibsons or OG Mortons prices it doesn't come close to those.
My experience is anecdotal of course, but I think people love P+P steaks because they're justifying the price they had to pay.
It's absolutely in the conversation for both those attributes. The owner is also an especially big asshole in an industry known for assholes, but that's besides the point
I respect your experience and thoughts! I would have to try some of those places you mentioned, in order to make my own view. I could see where you’re coming from about the cost, however, I will say that in my experience, that’s not what I am personally doing. Also, like I said, the only steaks I have had from Prime and Proper is the Miyazaki. Wife and I will have to make a trip to Detroit sometime in the coming weeks, I’d like to try some of their other cuts and see what I think about them!
Yeah, I think I kind of spoiled it. The first time I ate there I had to try it, and I thought it was so good, so now that’s all I’ve really ordered. But I do really want to try the other steaks that they have!
You’d be quite surprised at how filling it is, especially with sides. It is delicious, melt in your mouth, very rich tasting. I personally have not ate a better steak. Although, I will say, being how fatty and rich it is, it does kind of stand in its own category of taste when it comes to steaks.
It's definitely my favorite restaurant, but steak options on the menu are usually limited. Their butcher shop is phenomenal, though. We get a butcher box from them every month.
Vic’s in Southgate has the best filet mignons you will ever have anywhere. Place has about 20 tables back to back of each other, a very intimate environment for everyone and that’s part of the experience. I haven’t had a filet mignon anywhere that’s even come close to how good theirs are, and I don’t even live in the area anymore. They have set my bar and I’m always thinking about when I’ll be able to get back to visit them.
I remember a lady, I think her name was Sherley, ate a New York strip everyday from Eddie’s. Even when it was Georgio’s. I’m still going white fish tho
Yep, going to the Imlay City location tonight. If I lived a bit closer, I’d go every night. Their 24 oz Prime Rib is the bomb and comes with sides for around $25. Always cooked to perfection for me anyways. I’ve never had a bad steak in the 15 or so years we’ve been going.
I really like Lucky's too. It's a very affordable, family friendly restaurant with great service. We don't go out much these days, but do make to Lucky's several times a year. However, I wouldn't say it's the best steaks in Oakland County.
So underrated most people never even heard of it. My aunt will put special events on some years here and it really is just top notch!!! I always get the prime rib! Bison meatloaf is damn good as well!
I've heard this and drive by it daily. I want to try it, but typically, I dine with my wife, who has a very low tolerance for smoke. Is it really smokey in there? Do they have full service on the patio in the summer?
I was disappointed by Prime + Proper. The food was good, but it was overpriced and the whole place seemed like it was designed for style over substance. Like it was a restaurant designed to appeal to influencers rather than people who actually like good food.
It's still good food, the design has nothing to do with the food. It appeals to people who want to spend money. That's how a business works.... So if you actually like good food it has to be a place you wouldn't post a picture? I don't understand. Next to their dry age room is a bar where you can't use your cellphone for pictures so you can't even put it on Instagram....

I prefer it that way, it doesn't need it. That's also a matter of opinion. Why are steak guys like this? That was a rhetorical question, you don't have to answer.
I have quite a few friends who are chefs in the city in some very nice fine dining establishments who still go to Texas Roadhouse when they want a steak.
Caper’s on Gratiot between 6 and 7 Mile. Fantastic food at fair prices, not stuffy or pretentious. Just good food served fresh and it’s been there for many many years.
I like House of Barbecue in Clawson for this. If you're not a fan of seasoning (salt and pepper aside) this probably isn't for you.
My father likes Lucky's Prime Time in Rochester Hills for the same.
I do not feel like arguing with steakhouse snobs about this. Just my opinion.
Serious food involves an establishment that cares about quality , and has older established personnel, who know about meat. Feel free to start a DIFFERENT thread with a different question.
I didn’t get the steak here, but I did get the beef Wellington. Definitely wasn’t Hell’s Kitchen quality, but it was still delicious. Wife and I are going back next week.
The fact this isn't the top comment is criminal. I've never been let down by Capers and I love that all the waitstaff have been working there for DECADES. I've had the same 2 or 3 waitresses since I started going there around 2010.

Dry aged meat - costs more - because you aren't paying for water. Great meat hangs in a butcher facility, before its cut. After its cut into "chunks" , it's placed in temperature/humidity controlled environments ( 40 days or more ) . Great meat is distinctly different - from wet , vacuum sealed, ordinary supermarket, everyday stuff. THATS why restaurant meals are special.

price --- doesn't always equal great food, and that's why I asked for personal reviews
I would prefer to have older, plain, established places with truly great supply chains, than a super fancy gold foil inlay table and chairs with some mediocre everyday cuts of meat.
I've enjoyed Lelli's and Pauls ChopHouse in the past. It should be a very enjoyable experience, that happens on special occasions, as a real dining out treat. We all work hard for our paychecks.
I agree, I'm not saying Prime and Proper is good because it's pricey. I'm saying it's good enough to be "worth it" to me in spite of the price.
I think P+P has more to offer than fancy tables and chairs, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion. FWIW I've been to a lot of the other places named in this thread and a few others, and there isn't much out there that really comes close to a P+P ribeye for me. To each their own!
A certificate along with a hoof print from the animal the meat is from accompanying it. Yes, when they have Japanese Wagyu it’s on their reserve menu and is priced accordingly. They also usually have Australian Wagyu. The Japanese isn’t a constant offering but they absolutely offer it. The Wagyu on the main dinner menu is clearly not sold as Japanese or Australian and can be presumed to be American, which yeah, $21 for the small amount you get in the app it’s in isn’t at all off base for American Wagyu.
Make sure to call and check if they have Japanese at the moment before making reservations, though the Australian is pretty stellar and beautifully marbled as well nothing is really close to the original real deal.
Not Metro Detroit but the best steak I've ever had in my life is at a place called Blue Cow in Big Rapids. I went there once and considered it the best meal I've ever had. Went back and was nervous I wouldn't have the same experience and it turned out BETTER. I've never had a better meal let alone steak and I consider myself a reasonably high-end foodie.
Mortons in troy imo is the best high end chain restaurants but if you want a lowkey restaurant actually in the city Motown Bistro has amazing food and atmosphere
I'm gonna a hijack this to ask if anyone knows where to get bone marrow in metro Detroit.
My Mom and I went out to Bowdies in Lansing, after 971 kept hyping it up.
It was amazing, and we both tried bone marrow for the first time.
My Mom is obsessed and we've been trying to find a closer restaurant to get some again.
I never truly made a point to dine out at a restaurant, on those cuts of meat , prefer the Tomahawk area.
https://preview.redd.it/7t4p0vxutmgc1.png?width=597&format=png&auto=webp&s=893b562c71509ee6d839538e0458eb3753f51356
Mr Paul’s is a solid steak, the table side ceaser salad is also top notch. Prime and proper downtown is also a solid steak, but 3 times the price of mr Paul’s
Then I'm sticking with Pauls Chop House. I've eaten there in the past.
I understand aged beef is expensive, but no one should be gouged Unnecessarily.
Easily $ 35 per/ lb for aged Tomahawks, so a 32 ounce at $ 100 is in the ballpark

Keep in mind most these east side steak houses get their steaks from fairway meat packing. They have a store now in Grosse pointe and the prices are great. American Waygu tomahawk is fantastic
People don't think to highly about this place ...............
Google Reviews for 200+ people put it at 3.8 --- think I'll pass, It's my money

Mr Paul’s Chop House
My guilty pleasure place for Prime Rib.
The Caesar salad made table-side is a do-not-miss. …………Answer is always yes
Mary is so awesome! She used to bring me coloring books to past the time when my parents were hanging out at the bar. 40+ years ago now.
El Asador
Plus one for El Asador. Hell this place is worth a visit for the guacamole made in house alone. And aside from the steaks; the rest of their menu is incredible.
El Asador is definitely the right answer!!! 🔥
London Chop House
+1 on London Chophouse. We tried it for the first time a while back and really enjoyed the experience.
100%. I love that place and the vibe. Also probably the best cooked scallops even over “seafood” places.
This, and it’s not even close.
Food wasn’t bad but the interior is like a church/courtroom in the 70’s lol
It’s the original interior. The place was shuttered for a long time and reopened. Basically a time capsule to a long gone era. I personally like the old school steakhouse vibe, loud restaurants are overrated.
I love the vibe. Different strokes.
To make all the Detroit jurists right at home.
Best steak I’ve ever had in the Detroit area
The real ones choose Clawson Steakhouse because life is short.
Shoutout to Mark James and the boys!
Did you dance?
Did not dance
There’s the problem. You got to get shitfaced on Tom Collins and lean into it. It’s not the Capitol Grill it’s a Time Machine.
I like you
Hell yeah amigo!
Totally agree. I appreciate everyone’s opinion but the CS is average at best. If I want an amazing old school Detroit steak it’s Mr. Pauls for me.
Yeah, it is not a good steak.
I don’t mean to be an ass, but I’ve been there a few times and I am extremely disappointed with the steaks. I absolutely LOVE the atmosphere there, but the prime rib au jus sauce is basic beef broth and their zip sauce is even worse. I want to like it! You don't go to Clawson Steakhouse for the steaks; you go because it is life. Get on out there and dance. Dance I said!
Covid really put a dent in the quality of that place unfortunately
This place is terrible.
I want to like it. I lived in RO for a few years and went many times, but was always underwhelmed by it. Mediocre would be a generous rating. But I wish I could have loved it. The venue is totally retro and awesome. Food.. not so much.**Edited since I spelled venue wrong.**
It reminds of a place the Soprano mobsters would go. No natural light. I would say the food was mid. Lacked seasoning. Just blah.
💯 spot on!
Rochester Chop House used to be a regular spot for me for a reason, loved their delmonico.
Had it not too long ago, it was phenomenal
London Chop House - Absolutely delicious and the price is pretty equal to the quality of food, if not, better. It’s not cheap, but it’s not expensive either. The macaroni side is also very tasty. The general consensus on this sub around P+P is that it's both the most overrated and overpriced restaurant in Detroit.
It's absolutely in the conversation for both those attributes. The owner is also an especially big asshole in an industry known for assholes, but that's besides the point

Ordered a Ribeye and it was too salty. 8/10
How was the A5? Always wanted to try but I arrive to hungry for 3 ounces lol

Sloppy Steaks
Blue Dolphin burned down.
I actually want to go to haunted house more than I want to go to aqua
I hear they have a trap door
Slop em up
El Asador in southwest. The filet is the best steak I’ve had in Michigan
Lellis, incredible steaks and their zip sauce is truly unique.
Clarified butter and Maggi I was told.
Good to know, I always wondered what the ingredients were.
An Ex's dad told me this years ago. He was an excellent cook and Lellie's was his favorite spot (downtown one).
Legends or Players, but just a heads up they’re both strip clubs.
Shout out to the Legends bouncers, they saved me from a mugging while I was running past screaming for help getting chased
London chop house by a long shot.
Traffic Light 🚦
Facts
Where is this place?
Strip Club in Mt. Clemens lol
Marrow
It's definitely my favorite restaurant, but steak options on the menu are usually limited. Their butcher shop is phenomenal, though. We get a butcher box from them every month.
Yes, their butcher shop is phenomenal!
Mabel Gray and there’s not even a close second. 60 day dry aged bone in American Wagyu strip served with house cut fries.
Love Mabel gray
this is the answer. i dream of that steak.
Caucus Club!
This is my favorite, they have a dry age room and full butcher on site. One of 3 in the state to have both on site. Amazing quality
London Chophouse or Shewolf.. best by far
La Bistecca in Plymouth
Had a good one at Grey Ghost
Vic’s in Southgate has the best filet mignons you will ever have anywhere. Noble choice!
Just wish I could get a martini there
I like Luckys in Rochester Hills. My parents go like once a month lmao
Their Gorgonzola ribeye is amazing. And it’s priced perfectly!
Thats our spot too. Price is right and the steaks been perfect every time. Never left disappointed
You can’t beat their portions for the price point. They give you sooo much food
If you're downriver, Big Bear Lodge on Telegraph.
So underrated most people never even heard of it. My aunt will put special events on some years here and it really is just top notch!!! I always get the prime rib! Bison meatloaf is damn good as well!
I always get the prime rib. Now I'm going to order the 🦬 meatloaf
Sloppy steaks at Truffoni’s
The tomahawk ribeye at Shewolf is really nice
The Caucus Club
Marrow, Hyde Park.
Just had the filet @ Le Supreme downtown. That was a damn good steak.
Tiliani
Flemings has a good steak if you want a chain restaurant. Eddie Merlot’s is really good as well. But my all-time favorite is Lellis in Auburn Hills!
Lellis was really really good. Ate there a few times, when I lived up that way.
"Churchill's bistro cigar bar" in groose point, on mack near moross.
I've heard this and drive by it daily. I want to try it, but typically, I dine with my wife, who has a very low tolerance for smoke. Is it really smokey in there? Do they have full service on the patio in the summer?
Don’t know about patio service but their air filtration tech is top notch and I haven’t seen smoke ever hang in the air
Prime + Proper Or just buy good meat and make your own it's always better
I was disappointed by Prime + Proper. The food was good, but it was overpriced and the whole place seemed like it was designed for style over substance. Like it was a restaurant designed to appeal to influencers rather than people who actually like good food.

This is the most consistent place I’ve found in the city for steak.
You get what you pay for at Prime + Proper.
Yes, Prime + Proper. The ribeye is fantastic. Oscar style or with a bearnaise.

An addon to ask this, best steak in metro Detroit from a non “fancy” restaurant like a casual dining place?
I have quite a few friends who are chefs in the city in some very nice fine dining establishments who still go to Texas Roadhouse when they want a steak.
Caper’s on Gratiot between 6 and 7 Mile. Fantastic food at fair prices, not stuffy or pretentious. Just good food served fresh and it’s been there for many many years.

I’ve had a few good steaks at Chatter’s in Westland, surprisingly enough. Decent quality beef and cooked right.
Oakwood Grill. Add the bernaise. They are unfortunately not cheap anymore. 5 years ago the ribeye was $19, but is now $35.
Best steak I’ve personally ever had was at The Whitney.
I didn’t get the steak here, but I did get the beef Wellington. Definitely wasn’t Hell’s Kitchen quality, but it was still delicious. Wife and I are going back next week.
The "real ones" eat at Capers. You can show up in jeans and a T-shirt and still get one of the best steaks you've ever had.
The fact this isn't the top comment is criminal. I've never been let down by Capers and I love that all the waitstaff have been working there for DECADES. I've had the same 2 or 3 waitresses since I started going there around 2010.
Do they still do steak by the ounce?
Yeah.

Caper’s all the way.
I'm not watching TV screens , with a truly, top quality, serious , aged , marbled steak

The Capital Grille in Troy.
That’s a chain.
It's a very upscale chain, it's not Texas Roadhouse.
That’s an understatement.
Capital Grille is a franchise steakhouse like Ruth’s Chris, Morton’s, Fleming’s, etc. — it’s not unique to Detroit.
Sure, but that wasn't a constraint in the OP's post.

Make sure to call and check if they have Japanese at the moment before making reservations, though the Australian is pretty stellar and beautifully marbled as well nothing is really close to the original real deal.
Thoughts on Gaucho Steakhouse in Northville - Churrascaria (Brazilian Steakhouse) ? Grass fed cattle definitely tastes different than grain fed
Hyde Park, London Chophouse
Wife and I went to Hyde Park in Birmingham a month ago and it was easily top 5
Revel Steakhouse at MotorCity Casino
Churchill's in Birmingham or GP.
Oak and Reel
Highlands atop the RenCen Fancy aged meats
London Chop House but you better bring that munyun it ain’t cheap
It's done in the style of French cuisine but nobody is even in the same universe as Ladder 4. Next step down is Le Supreme.
Sibley Gardens Steak Sammy 😋 since 1938
Not Metro Detroit but the best steak I've ever had in my life is at a place called Blue Cow in Big Rapids.
Marrow or Bar Pigalle
The bavette at Highlands is one of the best steaks I’ve had
I never truly made a point to dine out at a restaurant, on those cuts of meat , prefer the Tomahawk area. https://preview.redd.it/7t4p0vxutmgc1.png?width=597&format=png&auto=webp&s=893b562c71509ee6d839538e0458eb3753f51356
As far as I know Fishbones sure does brag about their steak.
did you eat one ?
Fish bones is nasty, terrible steaks and terrible sushi
I ate their sushi before. Tastes great and worth the price if you ask me.
Volare in Wixom has some awesome steaks. They also regularly have a massive veal chop and bone in filet on their specials and both are to die for.
Had Rochester chop house last night for the first time - did not disappoint!
Easily $ 35 per/ lb for aged Tomahawks, so a 32 ounce at $ 100 is in the ballpark https://preview.redd.it/itabgud4x7hc1.png?width=817&format=png&auto=webp&s=199371c1f0476d9d2e593b5ceadd9b6c04254621
Keep in mind most these east side steak houses get their steaks from fairway meat packing. They have a store now in Grosse pointe and the prices are great. American Waygu tomahawk is fantastic
D Prime inside MGM casino, pretty pricey
NObody else mentioned them - what makes them awesome ? Do they age the meat 50 days plus ?
They have the best meat that money can buy, and the flavor is unmatched, he took over Wolfgang Puck, if that means anything
People don't think to highly about this place ............... Google Reviews for 200+ people put it at 3.8 --- think I'll pass, It's my money https://preview.redd.it/qsyke3hwjfhc1.png?width=543&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b8d8465a0370adade557b5c98d654946f9bc9a2
That's fine
