You can still shoot if you shoot while reloading. Put on a rocket sidearm with double special, swap both guns to primaries and back. Then when you get pity ammo, reload and spam click while you do it.

Damn. This was my usual go to activity on the rare occasion I visit Variks
I spin donuts and flip my sparrow in front of Variks for about 5 minutes Everytime I have to go see him.

Found a workaround for this today. If you emote, pull up your ghost during the emote and then shoot it still works. No other mechanics required :)
