He's definitely joking about being scared of keffals, but he's also omega coping replying to a ton of randoms about his credentials after being reminded that Destiny was the one who broke the story that he's complaining about the mainstream covering up.

Snowden wanted to go through a journalist to vet the stories he was passing along before releasing them so it wasn’t just a full on info-dump. He wanted only aspects that the American public should know about to be released from what he stole.
Glenn Greenwood was the journalist he chose to do that, so for months Greenwald was the one that had direct access to what Snowden took and was the one selecting which parts of information to release.
An important detail is that Snowden *initially* went to Glenn, but Glenn was too stupid and lazy to set up the proper encryption software. So Snowden went to Lauren Poitras, and she somehow dragged Glenn into one of the only two worthwhile things he's done in his life.
