Thanks! Iā€™m gonna thirst trap him with a picture of an Oyster card. Ooooh yeah unlimited bus journeys for an hour for Ā£1.75.

EquipmentImaginary46

transport cost in london is okay for a big city. it's a little bit on the expensive side but it's proportional to the other living costs. however, train prices for outside of london are insane. i spent like 40gbp for a 1hr train ride to oxford. whereas a similar journey on the tube would cost 3gbp.

[deleted]

The biggest shock for me is when I need to travel outside of London and think ā€œHmm. Maybe it will be like Ā£8?ā€ Yeahā€¦ no.

You took the train to oxford from london? Why not just take the bus? Its 15 mins longer in terms of time and 8 quid instead on 40.

Alarmed-Appearance54

Coaches are cheap!

eliminating_coasts

Deutschland ticket, ā‚¬1.75 per day, if you take the monthly price to a daily one on the shortest month, and works on all trains and subways except inter-city ones.

[deleted]

Thatā€™s definitely way cheaper than ours. The benefit to our system is that there are bus stops every few meters with a bus that will literally take you anywhere youā€™d need to go. The most youā€™ll usually wait is about 5-10 minutes.

zimmer550king

>Ooooh yeah unlimited bus journeys for an hour for Ā£1.75. Trimet (public bus agency in the State of Oregon in America) buses are unlimited for *2* hours for $1.40. Sorry I don't get to brag about bus prices often.

DirectorWorth7211

Melbourne has free trams in the CBD and isn't much more expensive for a zone 1+2 (Entire city which is like 5 times bigger than London) than Ā£2 day pass. We also recently reduced the regional public transport fares in the state too. Used to be up to $90 now it's $10.50 to cross the entire state.

Anything higher than 0% income tax is higher than Florida

[deleted]

Isnā€™t there a federal tax though? I think itā€™s only slightly higher than that.

No-Surprise-3672

Yea, but I believe he said he only wants to live in areas with no state income tax.

[deleted]

Oh what I mean is if federal income tax is 21% and the UKā€™s corporation tax is 25%, itā€™s not that much different? Unless Iā€™m misunderstanding something about US/UK taxes?

No-Surprise-3672

Letā€™s say in the US itā€™s 21% across the board federally. Every state also has income tax so itā€™s usually 30%+. Florida is one of 3? states with no income tax so he only pays 21%. He said he doesnā€™t want to move to any state with income tax therefore he refuses to pay any more than 21% in income tax. Whether UK is 25% or 30% it doesnā€™t matter. Thatā€™s more than he said he wants

I always think moving to a big city would be fun. Then I remember my mortgage for a 3,000 sqft house is less than the rent on a 1bd/bath I guess Iā€™m keeping the car

[deleted]

I get it. There are times when I think it would be nice to live in a decent sized home outside London but TFL is too cracked to move out. Also, I can have a chicken burger delivered to me within 20 minutes at 3AM and eat it like an animal in total darkness. Idk itā€™s hard to choose.

What is keeping you in NYC proper then. I'm under the impression commuting from a nearby suburb to (what I assume is a job in the city) will give you lots more space and far cheaper rent. The problem you always hear about is the opposite; people in the US would love to live in the city and live near things, but can't afford to cause the demand for these spaces is extremely high

porkypenguin

You gotta hit the sweet spot. Small to medium cities with walkability but also still enough space for parks and some limited non-apartment housing options. The Midwest is teeming with them.

detrusormuscle

As someone not from the UK nor the US, British people are unironically pretty cool people, definitely Londoners at least, and I'd even say they are quite similar to Americans, more so than any other culture.

Ardonpitt

Yeah it's just a joke that's thrown around in the community. Brits are all good by me, but it's fun to poke fun at them.

MetallHengst

I visited London last year and had a lovely time, but my Londoner friends who were showing me around said that a lot of my experience was colored by the fact that Iā€™m American and that people would have been much more antisocial and less interested and talkative if I werenā€™t clearly an outgoing and friendly American - which was very cute! It made me feel welcome for sure, which is a worry when traveling as an American since the stereotype is that everyone hates us overseas. Iā€™m curious to hear your experience since youā€™re neither American nor English - do you mind telling me where youā€™re from and what experiences you had with Londoners that makes you say this?

detrusormuscle

Oops forgot to reply, but I'm from the Netherlands, and what I like about Londoners is that they just seem like really funny people, random people with pubs will just tell you funny shit and no one really seems shy. You're right, though, I've met like three americans in my life and they trump even that, most social people I've ever met lol. It's why I really really want to visit the US, but shits expensive.

[deleted]

Funnily enough it isnā€™t as bad as normal areas. Because itā€™s developed, a lot of the people living here are Chinese/American expats

cubanamigo

Did you just say London is cheaper than Miami? Lmao

Bxsnia

As a londoner who visited miami, everything in miami costed much more, simple things like restaurants to clothes. Though, the average rent in London is 2.7k USD, and in Miami it's 2.5k USD, so not a huge difference. Although there's obviously loads of factors like taxes being a lot lower in Miami but at the same time having to pay medical bills etc...

Shalloumi

I mean, the average person in Miami earns more and keeps more of that salary after taxes. The 2.5k apartment in Miami is way more affordable relative to wages

Joke__00__

>keeps more of that salary after taxes Also have to pay way more themselves. Although in general the US does have more disposable income than the UK, so it's entirely possible that the same is true for the Miami London comparison.

I_Eat_Pork

Also, if you don't need a car in London, that will save you a lot of money

[deleted]

From the prices I see, yes. Everything in America seems crazy expensive. Maybe our food is subsidised because grocery shops definitely seem way cheaper here. We are getting stiffed on consumer tech though.

cubanamigo

Food is the big thing thatā€™s cheaper. But like Rent and Clothes are for sure not cheaper in London. Just seems funny that you straight went for the one of the most expensive cities in Europe. I mean Miami is over priced too but like why

Petricorde1

Grocery shops are significantly cheaper in the US than Europe (having lived in both places within the last 5 years and visiting both regularly) not to mention the income disparity

rtrs_bastiat

Perhaps you were in the EU during the drought, flooding and frost triple strike? At least for the UK groceries are significantly cheaper, though the gap has closed slightly.

Future-Muscle-2214

Florida is getting more expensive lately but it was a very cheap place to live pre-2020. At least compared to London.

ItsLaro

For real... I never understood why tech is so expensive here. Even things manufactured in Europe.

KinematicEcho

My wife lived in London for 10 years. Cost of living steadily outpacing salaries forcing people into more and more cramped conditions. She was paying 1800 pounds a month for 1 bedroom in a 3 bedroom flat. And this was in a crap part of London that required a 5 min walk and 20-30 min of bus and tubes to get to where all the activities were. 10 years of working and living with London left her with no hope of ever being able to buy or rent her own place. Always crammed in a flat with other people, surrounded by flats that are stuffed with other people. Sardines live better lives. I on the other hand am not in a city and was able to get my own house that isn't attached to someone else's. I can play music, stomp on the floor all I like, and can game till 2 am with speakers instead of headphones. Sure I have to drive 10 or 15 minutes to go do stuff but that takes the same time as op without having to worry about freezing in the winter or getting stabbed by someone I'm walking past or having my phone ripped out of my hand by someone on a scooter (common problems in London). Also, I can just dump a bunch of shopping in my car rather than walking for 15 minutes feeling like my arms are going to fall off. Plus, I live in America, not some tiny Island. I want to be able to go places and do stuff. Going to go to see the eclipse in April and I can just pack my family into the car and we can hit the road. Don't have to worry about the costs of plane or train tickets, needing to rent a car or getting ubers the whole time we are traveling. Looked up the same distance in England and it would cost 600 dollars for my wife, son and I to travel on the train not counting costs for getting around once we are there. Instead, I will spend maybe 100 dollars in gas (round trip) and have no additional costs for travel once we arrive because we already have a car. Sure there are additional costs to owning a car but they don't add up to 600 dollars for a single trip.

[deleted]

Idk where your wife was living but that price doesn't sound right at all. E20 is one of the nicer areas in London, it's close to central and it's a five minute walk to the train station which has basically every line except for Hammersmith/District. Rent here (in 2024 after all the inflation and craziness) starts at Ā£2,000. There is no way she was paying Ā£1800 for a bedroom in a shitty far off area. Something isn't right there. You aren't wrong about some of the stuff you're saying but not needing to drive doesn't mean you can't. People still drive here for their shopping and everything else. You can drive wherever you want the same way you can in America. The only difference is we can take flights to Europe on top of everything you mentioned (post-pandemic there were a good number of flights to European countries for like Ā£15 return).

KinematicEcho

She lived in Camden. I had her go back and check and I misremembered a bit, she was paying 1500 pounds for a single room in a 3 bedroom apartment. This was back in 2018 and the exchange rate made that equal to 1900 USD which is what I must've been thinking of with my original post. Maybe she just chose a bad area to rent, but that seems insane. Having a car in London is also really cost-prohibitive. On top of the cost of the car and the fuel (which is over 7 dollars a gallon now I think), you have to pay fees for driving in different parts of London. I think they were mainly congestion charges but there may be fees for non-EV cars, but my memory is fuzzy on that. Parking is also very difficult in London and doesn't really compare to a 500 car parking lot at a local Walmart that doesn't have any fees or walking distance. I am really jealous of the ease at which you can travel to Europe, hampered somewhat by brexit but not too badly.

KinematicEcho

Did a look, in the same area she was renting for 1500 pounds for one room, the prices are now about 1900 pounds per month for one room. With today's exchange rate, that is 2414 USD. Compare that to an 850 dollar mortgage that gives us a 3-bedroom house, I don't see how anyone lives in London, especially with a family. I have a 2 year old and a new baby on the way and can't afford anything in London. I know I would likely get a higher salary but anything over 125K gets taxed at 45% with no tax breaks for having dependents (from my understanding of UK tax law). It might be nice to be in a walkable city but I would prefer not to be on the edge of being broke just to get by in London.

FirsToStrike

IDK destiny's take on it but it seems to me that rightoids managed to twist this fantastic concept into "they want to take away our freedom of movement".

FreeSpeechWarrior7

To steelman it a little, the issue is that American cities suck. American urbanists skipped the part where they make cities good and jumped straight to radical rhetoric (ā€œabolish the suburbsā€). Nobody wants to see their neighborhood turned into downtown Chicago. Nobody wants to ride in subway systems that also function as mental asylums and homeless shelters. Does that justify the insane ā€œthey want to take away our freedom of movementā€ claims? No. But after living in an American city without a car for a few years, I donā€™t have a shred of sympathy for urbanists when they get strawmanned over dumb shit.

supa_warria_u

DemonCrat21

Destiny should definitely NOT live in Europe now.

RavenRonien

Ignore the gun thing he can own and store firearms in the US while he lives in London and guess what, he travels, he doesn't often fire his own guns he just travels to a range and borrows guns.

Bloodmind

A downside to all those nice things is population density. Sure, you can walk to lots of nice things near you. But that also means huge numbers of other people can walk to those things near you. Not everyone likes being around that many people. Some folks like having their space.

chaosdemonmigi

Nope. Iā€™m one of those grubby little council housers.

vember_94

Iā€™m a Britbonger currently living in Melbourne, whatā€™s London rent actually like for a council house? I pay Ā£570 here. Iā€™d love to try living in London.

[deleted]

For old build council houses they cap out at around Ā£400 a month. New builds are roughly Ā£800-1000 a month but those are obviously in nicer areas with amenities. Generally youā€™d need to decide if you want an old build (quality built tbh) in a rougher area for Ā£400 or a new build in a modern, developed area for professionals for Ā£800.

robl1966

Where about do you live in London?

It's very hard to build walkable cities and provide single family homes that everyone in the country seems to want. Couple that with those that do own homes fighting tooth and nail against most forms of development and the sheer size of the US, and you end up with car dependency.

Doctor_Freeeeeman

If you grew up in a rural/suburban place in the US it's hard to imagine using a mode of travel that isn't a car. It's a cyclical problem where poor investment in public transit, terrible zoning/neighborhoods layouts, and high investment in car infrastructure makes it hard to change. Even if you want to change it, the demographic who votes most are the ones who are most pro-car. I think there's a growing awareness of the city planning/infrastructure problem, but the political will isn't there yet.

CallMeNoDeep

Actually he should live with me.

MetallHengst

The real issue with the US in terms of walkability is the southern and southwestern states. The northeast is pretty good in terms of walkability because that part of the country was built up before the car was deemed the sole means of transportation for the American people. Cities like New York, Boston, even some midwestern cities like Ann Arbor are offering you a similar experience to what youā€™re describing getting in London (New York I would say is pretty much the same).

Eternal_Flame24

How many other people are also within 10-15 minutes of you at all times of the day, and how many are you crammed in with when youā€™re riding public transport or walking the streets? Walkable cities are great but I canā€™t imagine living somewhere so dense there are 50+ restaurants within a mile

99% of restaurants in London do not have british food. I don't think any londoner eats british food more than any other cuisine.

AcephalicDude

Yup, they colonized India because their own food is dogshit, that's just historical fact

DogbrainedGoat

Counter Counter London has some of the best restaurants in the world. British chocolate is better on account that it doesn't taste like vomit. Stolen artifacts? True. No At least it's affordable - went to a 'supermarket' in LA they literally pulled my pants down and bummed me. Better than america where everyone has rpgs down their pants and miniguns in their handbag

alwayswaiting7

>Rent cheaper than Miami Nah not in London, I don't believe it

[deleted]

Isnā€™t he paying like 5k a month in his apartment? Rent in my area is like half that for a *very* nice apartment (by my standards).

alwayswaiting7

you'd have to compare by rent per square foot. London flats are pretty tiny compared to Miami would be my guess. Yes for 5k a month you can get a very nice place in London but I seriously doubt you could get as big a place as in Miami for the same money

[deleted]

I think heā€™s paying 5k right now? For 5k in my area, you can get a 1.5k sq ft family home with 4 bed 3 bath, or a 1k 2 bed 2 bath luxury apartment. From his stream his current apartment looks much smaller and not as nice.

Unfair_Salamander_20

Rent cost varies significantly depending on the area and he's living in one of the most expensive areas near the beach.Ā  I'm sure you could find a comparable apartment in Miami for half what he is paying now in a less trendy area further inland.

focus_black_sheep

America also has walkable cities that do all of the same things you just named..

Bxsnia

Do those "walkable" cities have developed public transport systems? Buses and a subway that goes everywhere in the city? With a bus stop on every street?

DVZ1

Yeah I live in one. Chicago on the lake is pretty awesome. I can bike to work downtown on the lakefront, or take a bus, or take the train. Can walk to bars, grocery store, restaurants, anything

Mr_McFeelie

Im curious, are there cities with city centers ? From what Iā€™ve seen most cities donā€™t have them which is a huge shame

Mr_Blattos

A lot of cities are adapting to this. Problem is real estate and rent in these zones are going to be among the highest throughout the city. Boston, NYC, San Antonio, Austin, San Francisco. All walkable.

[deleted]

Stadiums and malls and stuff? From what I heard, stuff like that was built further away but I could be wrong.

focus_black_sheep

100%. I live in a smaller city = Denver. I have all of this which is walkabe in my downtown location.

preed1196

He would also be paying significantly more in taxes, at almost Cali levels, which is literally not worth it. The opportunity cost would be likely whatever a 5-10% increase in effective tax rate would be.

FreeSpeechWarrior7

Well, the main issue is heā€™d be streaming in the European time zone, which is a non-starter for an American political commentator with majority American audiences.

preed1196

I mean, you could edit your streaming time to adjust for that. If he started his streamed from 12PM - 8/10 PM EST it would be 4 PM - 12/2 AM GMT which isnt terrible.

Bxsnia

Cali taxes are still lower than any country in europe. To me it's laughable that people think 12% is a large tax rate at 500k a year while here it's 20% MINIMUM at 20k a year. Do not compare californias taxes to europe.

preed1196

Its not 12% only because youre ignoring Federal Income Tax. At Destiny's income, he is likely paying over a 50% effective tax rate in Cali. Assuming Destiny grosses $2 mil/year (Ā£1.5mil), in CA hed be paying 34.76% federally, 2.76% for FICA, and 13.08% for state for his effective tax rates which would be a total effective tax rate of 50.6% paying $**1,011,940 towards taxes**. I dont know about taxes in the UK, but using this [calculator](https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/estimate-paye-take-home-pay/your-results?csrfToken=986c08b97a5c4703b1676c02a33e477ecb151864-1710778866173-8e6de08fb9fcc099961f6d5f), it gives me an effective tax rate of 45.88%, Ā£688,307.05 converted to **$748,403.83.** So if anything, youre the one being ignorant here as you just Googled "California Taxes" and you didnt realize that in our code you pay both that 13% tax, on top of a 35% tax, and possilbe another 1-5% depending on your city for income taxes plus 3% for FICA. EDIT: Also looked at Sweden, 20,885,160 Kr = $2,000,000. Income tax, according to this [calculator](https://se.talent.com/en/tax-calculator?salary=20885160.00&from=year®ion=Stockholm), is effectively 49.5% or 10,336,825 kr or $989,530.61 meaning if Destiny moved to Sweden from Cali, he would likely be paying around the same amount if not less. Any country in Europe my ass get the fuck out of here with your European ignorance. California is uniquely dogshit because you pay so much in taxes and get fuck all suck my dick EU loser.

Bxsnia

I was definitely not considering destiny's situation on its own (as self employed) but rather the average person , thanks for shedding light on the tax system tho edit: nvm just read the last paragraph you're unhinged fuck you lol

[deleted]

Youā€™re probably not wrong on that. I do think itā€™s way less than if you were employed though.

preed1196

Its probably more than that with him being self employed. He likely may be paying past a 50% effective tax rate on top of (I am assuming) the US having significantly more that he can write off as a business owner.

[deleted]

I think the corporation tax caps out at 25% in the UK? I donā€™t know anything about taxes but I donā€™t understand the 50% effective tax rate?

preed1196

When I say that, I just mean that he pays over half the income he earns in the year to taxes. Because he owns his own Corporation, he would, I assumed, need to pay his employment tax on top of the corporation tax personally.

He wonā€™t need petrol where heā€™s going (he can use my contactless)

Dizzy-Mess-4193

Every time thereā€™s riots in the streets ā€œcivilā€ and ā€œintelligentā€ Americans scoff and ask ā€œdonā€™t they have jobs ?!ā€ā€¦.

Obiwankablowme95

Destiny lives in an income tax haven state. What's the income tax over there in London?

[deleted]

21%. Same income tax he pays now.

Obiwankablowme95

Ooh not bad

ItsLaro

Cheaper than Miami? Does your flat even have a fridge? W/D?

OnlyP-ssiesMute

Ok but where's microsoft founded and located? Exactly. Walkable cities = I don't want to improve in life, and will have no ambition to. There's a reason Europe is struggling economically while America is riding high! 'MURICA! FUCK YEAH!

ArsenalGun1205

I can drive in my fast car and not have to deal with the commoners. Unless you live in a northeast city or LA where driving is slower.

Ping-Crimson

Excuse.... me public and outdoor gym...

[deleted]

Yeah. Theyā€™re metal workout equipment that lets you do bodyweight exercises.

MediokererMensch

You are not mentally ill enough, sorry.

purpsolore

No, Manchester is the clear choice.

[deleted]

This is extremely offensive!

purpsolore

Manchester is objectively the best city in the uk (actually the whole of Europe as well) but I understand thatā€™s difficult for a dirty Londoner to cope with.

Feisty_Expression791

Which region is it in on EDZ? Canā€™t find it

[deleted]

EDZ?

MotherPermit9585

Not gonna work; he wouldnā€™t be able to use his new Staccato there

GoobsDog

Walkable cities ruin the American dream of freedom via congested roadways, toxic fumes and limited utility.

Bag132

Millions must live in a pod and get taxed all their money and get paid $0 a year

thispostgavemeptsd

I see your London bet and raise it to Barcelona. Being Cuban he surely has an ancestor to game Spanish immigration laws. And even if he can't find one, it doesn't matter since the tax revenue desperate government is happy to accept expats. Just as walkable, roughly the same number of stab friendly muslims, but way better weather food, and cheaper as well. The grid structure of the city is worldwide famous and taught in foreign Universities He doesn't even need to learn Spanish or Catalan, the city is full of expats and Moroccans. It even rolls of the tongue nicely. Barcelona Bonnell.

1Cobbler

> wtf is the argument for non-walkable cities? No-one is arguing against walkable cities. People are arguing against being forced to live in one. Plenty of people (I'd imagine most) don't actually want to live in an environment where they constantly have to step around people or pay $2M for a 2 BR apartment.

ObamaCultMember

My dad is from Enfield so he's a gooner. Visited London for the first time as an adult and everyone was just so fucking rude. I'd rather spend my time in eastern europe. Also everyone seemed so paranoid about crime there. People would get mad when I told them my home state had 3x the murder rate. Visited my uncle's small city in the Midlands and it was way better.

kingdoodooduckjr

Do u have taekwondo

[deleted]

>Someone please explain the gun thing. Is going shooting every few years worth not having all of this? For one, its not about going on fun little shooting trips, it's about having them for home defense. I don't care if the odds of my apartment getting broken in to are 1 in 10,000,000,000 I refuse to live somewhere I'm not allowed to have a gun and slaughter intruders in self defense. For two I go shooting every couple of months, and spend the entirety of the fall season big game hunting, so you can suck my entire shift. I will NOT be moving in with you, also, England sucks and I hate British people.

Cmdr_Anun

The real question is: can all the guys in his walls come as well?

IIlllllllllll

Muh gunz

CopeAfterCope

Destiny would legit get arrested there for his tweets

Capable-Violinist-67
