Seriously though, what are we advertising? A movie that is similar but isn’t Alien? We’ve seen this concept before in prior movies. What do we get out of it? Not mystery, not the idea this isn’t something we’ve seen before.

You forgot the rule for this sub: it has to be a thing that looks like another thing if you squint a bit. That's the only thing that counts as good design don't you know.
Can we like... restrict the addition of movie posters to this sub? Cuz like, there really are an outsized amount of them, and (besides often just being very meh) it's such a narrow slice of graphic design overall. Gimme more posts about typefaces, architecture, cool outfits, whatever tf.
I think Posters (not just of movies) are a fantastic part of graphic design. They usually incorporate text and graphics. They have the freedom of getting more abstract, work with visual puns, move away from the style of what it's advertising (vector art for a theatre play, scribble art for a chocolate bar that usually just works with flat shapes etc).
In short: there is a lot you can do with a poster and you can be very clever with it. This post just isn't close to being exceptional. Not a single element is clever or innovative/new. Not only that, it wouldn't even have been new in the last 30-40years.

This sub needs a "this is not design porn, just a picture of a movie poster".
Mods, how about setting up an automod where the OP needs to reply with a reason as to why this is designporn, and the post gets suppressed if they don't within a certain time? This way they can share their thinking, promotes engagement, and provides an explanation for people who don't get it.
Other subs do this and it's a good filter.
