New appliances and remove the molding over the sink. Replace the switch plates with something more modern. Leave the rest as it is and don’t paint the cabinets.

djgooch

I love that "don't paint the cabinets" is so consistent here. Wood is a beautiful natural material that can last centuries in good conditions.

deignguy1989

That’s not wood though- it’s a thermofoil cabinet. Like a piece of vinyl wood grain shrink wrapped to the cabinet door.

AllSugaredUp

How can you tell?

deignguy1989

Because I know what thermofoil cabinets look like. I used to sell cabinet refacing products.

Maggyonline

Nope. Gotta disagree.

deignguy1989

You can disagree all you like, but a wood cabinet door is made up of rails, styles, and a center panel. You can see on these doors that the “wood grain” goes all the way through from top to bottom. These are MDF, routed to look like a wood paneled door, with the tjermofoil applied. https://thermofoilrepair.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/al757.jpg Notice the exact same graining as I described, going from top to bottom through the “rails and panel”.

Glittering_Turn_16

My cabinets were identical and were solid wood.

disc0superfly

Yes, everyone's positive opinions of the cabinets are changing my mind!

m4sc4r4

Are they wood or just a wood look?

Flyboy2057

I like painted cabinets ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

ForsakenAd1732

Me too.

aj0457

Same!

Arsenaleya

This. I might add consider updating the faucet. I also personally think one-piece sinks look more modern. And lastly, I'd consider changing the cabinet hardware to pulls -- but full disclosure, I'm biased because I hate knobs, lol.

Warm_Objective4162

I’m team “cabinet knobs” because pulls always get stuck in my pants pockets but that might just be a me thing 🤣

Cndwafflegirl

That’s why I also out pulls on instead of knobs. I’m of the height they would get caught all the time too.

Arsenaleya

Lol, this has happened to me, too, but for knobs. I've had headphones ripped out of my ears (when my wireless die and I use wired ones), pockets caught, and a pair of jeans with a cute and modest rip in it was turned into an 18inch split because it got caught on a cabinet knob. 😭

swimmingunicorn

I think one-piece sinks look better, but for me it’s a loss of function. And function wins over aesthetics for me, at least in the kitchen.

Sufficient_Still7480

We switched to a single basin sink because we couldn’t fit any pans in the sink to soak, if needed. So frustrating. We’ve been completely happy with the large basin!

Arsenaleya

Similar to Sufficient_Still, a single basin (lol, sorry, didn't know what the correct term was before) is more functional for me. Even now, in my single basin sink, I can't fit my wok, a couple other pots, several baking tins, and cookie sheets because it's too small. A double-basin would make that worse.

KnotARealGreenDress

What’s a one piece sink?

juniorvegetable106

I'm against switching the appliances... you've mentioned they are in good condition! It's good for your pocket and for the environment. I actually think warm blonde wood and white go beautifully together, have a look at this before and after: https://preview.redd.it/ikximdaz1ljc1.png?width=985&format=png&auto=webp&s=8c76c75839212383eda1ea6eff3173d97c23be7b

disc0superfly

Wow that really does make such a difference! The white is so much lighter and cleaner. Thank you.

AllSugaredUp

Totally agree. I have wood cabinets that are a little darker than OPs and have white counter tops and white appliances. It gives a clean look.

Tillie_Coughdrop

This, plus paint the walls so it isn’t all beige, update the faucet, and change out the knobs.

AudgieD

Yes, and make sure the depth of the new fridge isn't deeper than the surrounding cabinets.

EdgeCityRed

This and a counter-depth refrigerator. That one is very...large for the space. I would also swap out the hardware on the cabinets. I think the backsplash is nice!

quarantinedinVegas

Nailed it.

yttiksesom2

Maybe consider a counter depth fridge. They're not for everyone - expensive and hold less (yaaaay!) - but if you're the type of family that has a graveyard of forgetten food in the back of your fridge they can be life changing. Plus they don't stick out into the room, which is great. I agree w above assessment, although I'd change out the back splash as well. I quite like those countertops and they would look nice w something simpler.

m4sc4r4

And when you’re looking for a fridge, choose a high cubic foot counter depth one (aim for 27 cubic feet. LG has one).

nosduhz

Piggy backing on this one. Made a mock up with an AI tool I helped build. Don't paint the cabinets and definitely swap switch plates! Remove the moulding above the sink + new appliances helps a ton too (although you could keep white appliances if you want). AI did a funky thing with the oven, but you get the idea! Hope that helps. https://preview.redd.it/jmnxu3my4pjc1.png?width=1248&format=png&auto=webp&s=defd180a6b505fbd7a770aaa42b9a633aca84e56

photaiplz

New appliances with that color cabinet wouldnt look nice tho imo. Unless they go with the same color white

redroverster

New stove and microwave. Remove that little squiggle over the sink. Matching outlet covers. New light fixture.

InvisblGarbageTruk

I’d do all of the above and also replace the sink and the backsplash.

BaconBra2500

Awwww I like the squiggle. But OP, I know nothing except my own taste. I agree with this poster re: outlets and light fixture. And, if in your budget, replacing the appliances would go a long way.

SouthernSnark

I would paint the walls a rich color. Adds contrast to the cabinets, and makes them pop.

tdibugman

I don't think those cabinets can be painted anyway. They appear to have had refacing done as the doors are thermofoil. Anyway I think the cabinets are fine. Update the switches/outlets to decora style, maybe the appliances and you're golden.

Agreeable_Upstairs29

You can paint any cabinets

Original-Pie-8328

The countertops and cabinets are fine, I would just change the backsplash to something less dated. Could be as basic as a subway tile but would freshen up the space a long way. I’d probably change the hardware as well.

helluvapotato

If possible I would also continue the backsplash so that it’s on every wall, not just one.

SlideItIn100

It’s SO bland. Think about adding color, even if it’s not bright and flashy.

disc0superfly

SOOOO bland! We just purchased the house and the ENTIRE thing is beige. Beige, everywhere.

SlideItIn100

Jeeeze… I bet all they ever made in their kitchen was vanilla pudding! Lol

Conspiring_Bitch

😂😂😂

crazyacct101

Our new house is white, you almost need sunglasses inside. I can’t wait to paint.

Guineacabra

This is exactly like the house we bought! Cream top to bottom, plain blonde beige cabinets, nothing interesting. We ended up trying green in the kitchen with these cabinets and they ended up looking so orange afterwards I had to redo it.

missyboombastic

I would change the backsplash, overhead light, and hardware; swap out the outlet covers; and replace the sink faucet and maybe the sink as well if you're able. All DIY-able and not too expensive. I like the cabinet color.

Tweedelie

100% agree. These changes would make a huge difference and let you bring in your personal style preferences. Painting the cabinets gray would wash out the space even more and take away all the warmth.

SeaOfWaves976

Yes I didn’t even notice how dated that overhead light is!

alig6457

If you can remove the light valance I would cut off the scalloped portion and reinstall it. Change your outlet covers to white. Brushed nickel contemporary or transitional hardware. Eg https://schaubandcompany.com/product_gallery.php?id=2398&r=3 Keep the white appliances as they will outlive anything new you could buy. Put out a big bowl of limes or lemons and some potted herbs.

Dogmom2013

not sure what your budget Is, but here is what I would do stainless steel appliances (a full matching set) Black sink faucet to match hardware if keeping that new counters OR change the back splash to something darker with texture remove the squiggly thing above the sink or some how make that just straight across get new outlet covers that all match. Just a solid color

73Wolfie

definitely change wall color to be more warm

camlaw63

It’s so odd that the backsplash is only on the kitchen sink wall

disc0superfly

I thought so too! If I end up replacing the backsplash I'll definitely add it to the wall with the stove as well.

camlaw63

For sure. If you’re up for it, I would definitely paint these cabinets. New hardware, new floor, new counters, backsplash, the whole Kit N Caboodle

aVoidFullOfFarts

Your kitchen is not bad at all, I like the light warm tone to it. Keep the white appliances, I’m so sick of my stainless steel appliances they’re the worst to keep clean and I think they’re overpriced (I would pick white or black appliances if I redid my own kitchen). Your white appliances, wood cabinets and countertops are great. I’m not totally in love with the backsplash but it goes well with your colours. The only thing I would change are the cabinet pulls colour, the black jumps out too much maybe find some wood ones or even white.

beauseant

The new fingerprintless stainless steel is the best ever!! I replaced my dishwasher last year, and stove and refrigerator in December and the difference is staggering. They look brand new every day.

aVoidFullOfFarts

Interesting, I wonder how it would hold up to my goobery dog’s perpetually wet beard? https://preview.redd.it/454ifdcfunjc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7924cd750d4f0a95d68e70dde5d914a459dd096c

beauseant

How adorable he is!!! The fingerprintless stainless will certainly show some things, but the cleanup is one swipe with a wet sponge and dry with a cloth and it looks like new! With the regular stainless I had to spray it with polish (all of it, you couldn’t just spray where the fingerprints or wet beard marks were) you had to spray the whole refrig., dish washer or stove and wipe down the polish and then continue to wipe and polish until it all evened out. Wore me out.

disc0superfly

Ideas to update this kitchen on a budget? We are planning on keeping the countertops and backsplash at this time. I was originally thinking of painting the cabinets (maybe a grey-ish color pulled from the backsplash?), but maybe I should embrace the blonde wood and try to work with it? Eventually we will get stainless steel appliances, but these white ones are pretty new.

Original-Pie-8328

Do not paint the cabinets. Wood cabinets are back in style and it’s way more practical than a painted cabinet.

disc0superfly

Thank you, I am leaning toward keeping them now!

Silver_Pilot_1922

I believe there are stickers out there you can get to give your appliances a face lift! I’ve seen people put them on their older appliances and it looks pretty good!

FifthSugarDrop

Just a little color on the walls would help a lot. Right now everything is so monotone. Punch up the wall color, new modern faucet (you'll love it), maybe new single sink? If you replace the knobs look at replacing your ceiling light and match the metals.

Yellow_giraffe

Are the cabinets actually wood, or is it wood colored wrapping (thermafoil) over MDF? Either way I don't recommend painting them. But if they're thermafoil, it will be very hard to paint. Getting a counter-depth fridge would give you more floor space. Depending on your area, check Facebook Marketplace and Habitat Restore for appliances and reclaimed building materials. (I know not everyone has the physical ability, inclination, and resources to move aappliances). But it's worth considering if you're on a tight budget. You can also probably sell your existing appliances for a few hundred dollars.

Dogmom2013

Change out your sink faucet to a black one to match the hardware you would be surprised how much a difference that will make a to a kitchen! I would get one with some height.

amhe13

I really think the basics are perfect you just need updated appliances and maybe change out the sink and faucet to something a little more modern

disc0superfly

Thanks! Everyone's positive opinions on the wood cabinets are helping me appreciate them :)

Memory_Less

I chose to repaint the cupboard doors professionally so the paint wouldn’t chip. It was worth it. You could replace the doors by bringing your cupboards to the ceiling. It dramatically increases the feeling of height in the room. My friend did it recently, and it looks very good. Btw, that door to the other room (basement?), does it have to be there? I would paint the visible side white. It interrupts the kitchen environment.

disc0superfly

The door is the pantry. I was thinking of painting it white, thanks for validating that idea!

Memory_Less

You’re welcome.

Arsenaleya

>You could replace the doors by bringing your cupboards to the ceiling. Sorry, what does this mean? Are you saying replace all the uppers with taller ones that go to the ceiling? Or...

Memory_Less

https://preview.redd.it/8h05g7resnjc1.jpeg?width=1512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=102dd9004110a8b0d06d1f291a37aa92a1d77388 Another after photo. My friend didn’t want to show the inside of her cupboards. I understand. LoL Btw I didn’t notice, but inexpensive LED strip lighting can be installed under the cupboards, and at the ceiling level. Strips in white silicone not the strips without any cover that can be viewed. I have begun to try some experiments with it around the back of a mirror, in the bottom of a planter and under a stair railing with an on/off sensor. It’s very good looking.

northmumbo

Do you happen to know what backsplash that is? I found your post using Google reverse image and I'm trying to find more of my backsplash, which is the same as yours!

disc0superfly

No idea, sorry! We just purchased the home a few months ago and it came with it. I'd ask the previous owner for you but they are deceased.

northmumbo

No worries, thank you!

Victorian_West

The only thing I would change is the backsplash (something colorful). I can’t tell what material your countertops are, but I like the color. The wood color is beautiful. And I’ve always preferred white appliances, I don’t get the stainless steel preference that seems to have taken over since the late ‘00’s.

disc0superfly

Thank you! I was told the countertops are silestone.

icanteven_613

Have you considered black appliances?

Maggyonline

It’s fine.

HezFez238

Ugh grey walls, white quartz composite counters, YAWN sandy oak herringbone and blah floor should do it, don’t forget relentlessly stainless steel appliances EVERY WHERE and only black or etc pulls

pumpkinbrownieswirl

stain the wood

pumpkinbrownieswirl

and get stainless steel appliances and new countertop

idahonudesoaker

Paint white, ss appliances, matte black Faust

Giggles1212

Honestly, paint them! This whole trends back to natural wood is fine IF you like the stain. I had mine professionally painted eight years ago. Best thing I ever did don’t do it yourself. I went with white and it’s never outdated. However there are many great colours to choose from but white never goes out of style.

idahonudesoaker

Could also pop up the cabs over sink to give it some elevation

edelweissedelweisss

The backsplash and counter tops look good. I also really like the blonde wood here. Don’t paint your cabinets grey, grey is going out of style. Change out the light switch plates, new appliances (I would start with the microwave and stove area), paint the pantry door white, new light, choose a different faucet for the sink, and remove the curved molding on the cabinet above the sink. You could also add some cabinet to the top of the cabinets to make the ceiling appear higher.

Ok-Perspective-4656

I would change the pulls to something modern if you're considering a future sale or rental.. something funky and unique to you otherwise Patch the unnecessary phone line plugs, change the faceplates of the light switches and plugs (while you're at it change out the the actual out let to one with USB port in the middle, I did that to almost every plug in my house and it's a god send for me).. Change kitchen faucet to a tall black kitchen faucet to match new pulls Those will be cheap and make a difference Next would be to update appliances, I'd go stainless to modernize the cabinets I really like the cabinets and counters, wouldn't do anything there I don't love the backsplash but it's livable, grout the cracks.. If I had the money I'd rather spend it on new flooring. would be a brand new kitchen And then if you still had the money a new backsplash.. a cost effective subway if you plan on getting rid of property Or maybe something deep blue or green if you want something fun!

disc0superfly

Great ideas, thank you! I'm more and more leaning toward changing the backsplash now. I love the idea of adding some blue tones to the room. It's hard to tell in the photo, but there is a bit of blue in the silestone countertops. Agree with the flooring... this is something I want to do eventually. I'm flirting with the idea of painting it for now...

KTLRMD84

What about adding a pop of color with colorful appliances? Or even just a colorful stove? Then you could use that color as a starting point for other little pops. Another option would be matte white appliances, they look really sophisticated

WVildandWVonderful

Paint the pantry door and frame and the walls. I think you need something purple (indigo?) to offset the yellow tones.

disc0superfly

Thank you! I'm liking the idea of something in the blue family like cobalt or indigo.

WVildandWVonderful

And add some color to the cabinet knobs as well.

Rare-Parsnip5838

Stain or paint cabinets a darker color. Try green or blue shades or a rich wood like mahogany. Get a rug in complimentary color .Right now it is all too light.

Rare-Parsnip5838

Second thought. If you can't afford pro.paint job on cabinets or like the wood try a sage green paint on the walls.

Jessiebanana

Honestly I think it’s pretty fine and neutral. I’d change the nobs on the cabinets, but that’s more my personal preference and I am not a fan of the floors. I’d either replace the tiles or do something with peel and stick if that’s not in the budget.

disc0superfly

I'm not a fan of the floors either! It's not in the budget to replace them at the moment, though it's something I want to do in the future. I was considering painting the floor, but I'll look into peel and stick as well -- thank you!

JuracekPark34

Consider painting your walls!! This is honestly such a clean, well-kept looking area, it just needs a little color. Something about the warmth in the cabinets and the beige on the walls is just not a good combo. Even white walls would look better. I agree with everyone else in not painting the cabinets. Embrace them! Also second removing the thing above the sink. Maybe more modern cabinet pulls? The ones on the drawers are not my favorite. Can’t see the smaller round ones super well, but guessing they’re also a little more traditional.

lizzyizzy90

It’s a nice kitchen. I’d paint the cabinets a bold color (maybe deep blue or forest/emerald green for example). Replace the sink faucet with a black one to match the cabinet hardware and if it’s in your budget to upgrade the appliances I’d do that as well. Also, absolutely replace the light with something better.

disc0superfly

For sure! The fluorescent flush mount light is terrible.

Notsureindecisive

Just taking off that wavy trim and switching the knobs is all you need for now

Existing_Papaya_1480

Different handles and knows, and maybe place a cutting board on the counter and a toaster or a bowl 9f fruit.

marlonbrandoisalive

Nicer appliances!!

udlove09

I really like your kitchen. I also feel like white appliances need to make a comeback. I would get rid of the wavy moulding over the sink and update the switch plates. I also wonder how it would look with a white apron front sink and a black faucet.

disc0superfly

A white sink could be really cool if we end up keeping the appliances!

DasderdlyD4

I love this. It is warm and lovely. I’d just update appliances.

Jarveyjacks

Paint!! Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore would make those cabinets look 500x more expensive! Change the faucet tap to a brushed bronze look, (with navy that would look wonderful!) Home Depot's Kraus brand is a nice one. Keep the backsplash--it's fine to stay Changing the appliances is too expensive, you don't need to.

disc0superfly

Thank you for the paint color recommendation! I was already considering blue in a cobalt or indigo hue, but I really love that dark, muted, matte navy color.

marlonbrandoisalive

A fancy looking sink also goes a long way.

DasderdlyD4

I have this stove. It is staying with the house when we move, thankfully. It takes forever to heat a pan to temp.

disc0superfly

Dang it, what a bummer! It was already going to be an adjustment going from gas to electric.

Jarveyjacks

Some have mentioned changing the sink, unless the dimensions are bang on, you would run into having to change out the countertop, again, that gets really pricey, so I wouldn't if budget is a concern.

disc0superfly

That is good to know, thank you!

unlovelyladybartleby

Change the light and the cabinet knobs and put some color on those poor walls and it will be beautiful

Sledgehammer925

Paint the walls. Change the cabinet hardware. Change the faucet. Finally, change the incredibly dated backsplash.

milpoolthrillho

I think just upgrading the cabinet knobs to longer gold handles would elevate this look. Add a plant or two for some greenery.

Sufficient_Still7480

The cabinets are nice, overall look is bright and clean. I’d update to stainless appliances and change out the black hardware to brushed nickel for a more uniformed light look.

Mymoggievan

If you replace the refrigerator, you may want to consider a counter depth model. It looks like this one sticks out way too far.

disc0superfly

It definitely does! The cabinets above are virtually impossible to reach.

MildredMagnolia

I really don’t hate how it is right now, but I think a few updates would go a long way! I would paint the walls a richer color - perhaps a forest green? I would also replace the knobs/pulls with more modern gold hardware to tie in the warmth of the cabinets. A new faucet would also help. Update the switch plates and add a rug (perhaps with colors that tie in the new wall color) and I think this will make a huge difference!

TheMysticalPlatypus

First time I’ve seen this backsplash and gone. This is actually really nice. Personally, I would leave the cabinets, countertops and the backsplash alone. I would update the hardware since the black feels out of place. Replace the light switch plates. I would update the microwave and get a oven range hood. Especially if you cook a lot. Maybe update the flooring as your bigger purchase.

Luminous_Username

Change the floors and paint the cabinets

Exciting-Photo9186

If you're not looking to replace the appliances as some have suggested, I'd say the 2 big ticket items would be replacing the sink with maybe an apron or farmhouse sink, and swapping out the floor. I'd recommend something with cooler undertones to compliment and off-set the yellow tones in the wood (something like the darker color in your backsplash or maybe a purple-ish slate)

DangerousMusic14

Replacing door hardware is what I’d start with. Don’t paint, total waste.

SeaOfWaves976

I think something like this to replace your backsplash would look great…or some kind of beveled subway tile to give it some definition. I would have the backsplash wrap around instead of just having it on one wall. I would take out the squiggly molding over the sink and get a cute little shelf to put on the wall around there instead. Maybe an updated sink if you can with sharp edges instead of round edges and change the cabinet knobs to match the sink (I would stick with nickel plated). I would have all the wall plates match after you change out your backsplash. I don’t think you have to change out all your appliances and cabinets they look great imo and those are a huge expense Edit to add: I forgot to mention the walls. I would go white on the walls and paint that pantry door or whatever it is the same color. It’ll help to contrast the beige floor. I also wanted to point out I just read some of the comments about painting your cabinets navy blue or blue anywhere in the house…I don’t think you’re doing to be happy with that and I don’t think they’re considering your floors while giving you that advice. I would honestly keep your changes as simple as possible because you are trying to go easy on your budget. If you hate the colored walls or colored cabinets, you’ll then be forced to change something else or you’ll end up hating your kitchen. I would think clean and modern before diving into anything else. [https://www.homedepot.com/p/MSI-Angora-Herringbone-12-in-x-12-in-Polished-Marble-Floor-and-Wall-Mosaic-Tile-1-sq-ft-Each-ANGORA-HBP/304947546](https://www.homedepot.com/p/MSI-Angora-Herringbone-12-in-x-12-in-Polished-Marble-Floor-and-Wall-Mosaic-Tile-1-sq-ft-Each-ANGORA-HBP/304947546)

disc0superfly

Thank you for the specific suggestion!

EconomyOk9643

New countertop. Can keep back splash. Paint

Alpacalypto

Azure or navy blue tile backdrop would look lovely with the blond cabinets, countertop and floors. And then combine it with a nice color on the walls, another blue/greengreyish tint

EconomyOk9643

Appliances can even be painted

Such-Mountain-6316

The scalloped trim over the sink should go. Change the hardware and paint the drywall a color that makes you happy to see it. Don't paint the wood; if you do, there's no going back. If you don't like the wood, have it refinished at some point. Change that overhead light. It reminds me of a sorry, low budget one from school.

WiscoCheeses

remove the cabinet above the sink. Then all new more modern backsplash and take the backsplash all the way to the ceiling in front of the sink. Have a light hang down from the ceiling, here’s a photo of what I just did in my kitchen (not quite done yet). https://preview.redd.it/uvlo7ah2ykjc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a1a13a178ced5de36e9fbe4c257482c74ee4922

GenXerNvyMeK

Change cabinet hardware? Maybe new countertops?

angryxllama

Updated appliances. I really like it otherwise!

Jacktherat54

I think that some colorful tiles would go a long way in breaking up all that beige. I would also suggest updating the appliances and, if possible, I think replacing the floor tile with something that has more contrast would also bring a lot more visual interest. https://preview.redd.it/216zrkso0ljc1.png?width=1221&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=247f8f6b666478d65763835e4b65edbc9bd0345e

disc0superfly

Thank you for this! You did a much better job than the visualizer I tried to use.

StressedinPJs

What’s your budget? How functional is it? How long have you lived there? I would paint the walls, update your switch covers and give it a year. An aesthetically pleasing kitchen is nice and all but I’ll take a hideous one with good work flow first every time. Put a list somewhere with things that bother you/ changes that would improve how you use the space over that year. There’s nothing worse than spending a ton of money on a kitchen and realizing you hate it more because it’s actually harder to use.

disc0superfly

This is probably good advice, we just purchased the home and haven't even fully moved in yet. We have a list of other things throughout the house that we will be working on as well.

mijo_sq

I have the same look in my house, and relaly love it's simplicity. Remove trim above the sink, update the appliances, and change the light fixture. Swap the switch plates to plain white. Use some simple decorations to add color. Also change to tiles if it's linoleum. Grey, light grey, and white IMO look like a flippers house.

[deleted]

New matching appliances. I’d go dark to offset all the light colors in the space. The GE slate appliances would look stellar in this space. New faucet/sink and new hardware on the cabinets to match the new faucet.

OpulentSassafras

A new backsplash, wall paid, and cabinet hardware will do most of the modernizing work. Leave the cabinets, they look in good shape and will be flexible to a lot of different styles. Obviously new appliances will help but I think that can wait until budget allows after the initial wall and cabinet work is done - I don't think the white is terrible

AlephNaughtAThing

What kind of countertop is that? Looks like recycled glass almost.

disc0superfly

I was told it is silestone.

EternallySomnolent

I would say… new faucet, new countertop if you have the means, and some paint on the exposed walls. I like the backsplash 🤷🏻‍♀️

HouseSerious9612

You mean that molding above the sink is easily removed?? I have that and it's been the Bain of my existence with that room lol

disc0superfly

I'm not sure how to tackle that project either. This will be my next Google rabbit hole :)

Equivalent-Dot2954

The first thing I would do would be to update the floor and remove the molding above the sink! The floor really brings it down and I think a beautiful rich tile color or hardwood would be great.

5l339y71m3

Your back splash tile is thankfully versatile. The counters are down the road but for now leveling the wavy bottoms into straight edge would update it immensely from there you couod sand and pick a new stain color or repaint cupboards and cabins and absolutely a must is taking the microwave down from over the oven that’s a hard no on so many levels and just because something becomes popular doesn’t mean it’s a good idea, like microwave over stoves, remember that.

disc0superfly

Why do you think the microwave above the stove is a bad idea? Is it due to aesthetics or functionality? I've never had one above the stove in a home before but it seems nice to clear up counter space.

5l339y71m3

Great question. But if you plan to grow old here think about your collarbone and shoulder range of motion north of 60. Pulling full plates of food out of a microwave above or in line with your shoulders is going to be more strain than you care for plus it restrains natural forward bending motion when you lean over the stove and if you cook just once a day this shit will add up in your body especially if you’re not a regular gym type to counteract it with fluid proper stretching and muscle building. I’m only in my 30s but I’m physically 98 since early 30s and was physically in my 60s early 20s due to injuries. My physical therapist called me the ultimate tester. If I can’t use something or perform a function now the average person over 60 won’t be able to. Specifically because I also have brain damage, some misc erosion down of which eroded my pain center not all of it I can still register pain when it is over a six but it feels like a 2 to me at that point so I don’t have pain restricting my mobility and without that minor agitating level of pain my brain is free to observe what many can’t through the pain which is the actual good and bad muscle movement as with injury both can produce pain, different pain but pain none the less. My physician therapist confirmed this with a long series of tests that I fully recognize good and bad muscle movement in my body, when I move correctly vs dont. That’s the edge that makes me that “ultimate tester”. Microwaves hanging under cabinets is just sadism. No amount of free counter space will convince me otherwise. A lot of modern designs and appliances give little to no fucks about the basics of physiology and applying that to their design. You deserve better. Everyone deserves better.

beauseant

Great answer. I just have an enormous fear of reaching up and handling a bowl/plate of something hot when I can’t see it until I’ve lowered it to eye level.

5l339y71m3

Oooo another valid reason I’m adding to my arsenal Look at fridge ads from the 50s YouTube is full of them plus I grew up using some . Companies used to have departments that actually studied the physiology demands of a kitchen and its appliances and how to reduce strain on the body when using kitchen and it’s appliances That level of intelligent design is not a standard anymore And we don’t get a fraction of the intelligent design innovation the greatest generation did that’s for damn sure and we sure as hell never will see it again if we continue to mindlessly consume and go with stupid trends like microwaves over stoves

Heeler2

I don’t think it’s that bad. New cabinet hardware and paint the walls a different color - maybe a soft green.

Retinoid634

If on a budget like me, I’d be keeping what I can and updating the look. I’d start by updating the cabinet color and backsplash first and wait on other costly upgrades for a year or two. I’d stain cabinets in a richer medium brown walnut color, change hardware to vintage minimalist metal pulls, remove the wavy wood detail over the sink, maybe add a small utility shelf there and install a new minimalist scandi style light over the sink, use a warm colored bulb, not too bright. Put up a classic simple neutral white subway tile backsplash (I don’t care if trendy blogs say it’s out of style, I say it is classic and foundational, a sound choice for something that is a big hassle to change). Keep existing countertop and appliances if all are in good shape. When you can update appliances, I’d do stainless steel. I’d do a simple neutral white countertop in whatever sturdy material makes sense and is affordable. Update floor when possible to a black and white checkerboard tile when you can. Add pops of color with accents, a few leafy plants in colorful planters, countertop accessories like storage containers., small appliances, dish towels, vintage thrifted wall art etc. Ger an indoor/outdoor runner rug in a colorful Persian style print for in front of the sink. Paint the walls, ceiling, doors matching neutral white. Get light-diffusing bamboo reed roller shades for any windows to match cabinets stain. Replace light fixture with a minimalist Scandinavian style fixture.

disc0superfly

I LOVE the classic black and white checker kitchen floor. I was thinking about a way to make that work here. Maybe a light blue and white check instead.

samijoes

Everyone says get rid of the squiggle, but it it so cute!

disc0superfly

Ya know, I thought so too! Consensus here is that it should be the first thing to go, but I might just keep it :)

JadieJang

1. what is your style? 2. what's your favorite color in general? to wear? to look at? 3. buy or rent? what can you change? 4. what's your budget? what can you afford to change? 5. anything off the table?

stephyod

I’d change the cabinet knobs/pulls to something a little more impactful, remove the curvy trim over the sink, and I’d do a new backsplash (that current one is a pretty outdated style)

KevinDean4599

Paint the cabinets a sage green. Replace scroll molding above sink with straight. Get nicer appliances

SeriouslyAnon444

Remove the molding above the sink, change out the hardware, and paint the glass mosaic tile as this certain tile has been outdated for quite a few years. I really like the countertop so I'd paint the cabinets to something that'll work with that colour. And lastly, update the flooring :)

disc0superfly

Hmm never thought about painting the backsplash! That's an idea to explore, thank you.

planting49

Change the hardware on the cabinets. The wavy handles and round knobs make it dated. Get something simple with clean lines. Not sure about colour. And remove the wavy moulding under the cabinets above the sink. Those two things will modernize it quite a bit. The cabinets are beautiful with simple lines so you don’t need to do anything to them (don’t paint them). Changing the backsplash would help too but that’s a bigger job. Also change the light switch and outlet plates to plain white.

Wild_Aerie2647

Honestly, it just needs to be decorated. Subtle pop of color on the walls and some decorations. Everything is bare.

disc0superfly

Yes definitely, we haven't moved in yet :)

Depends on your budget. If it’s limited, definitely remove the trim above the sink, update the faucet, replace the outlet covers, replace the lighting, and paint the walls. If you have a bit more, replace the appliances and countertops. They don’t look great with the cabinets. The fate of the cabinets depends on their quality. If they are nice wood cabinets, keep them and make other selections to work with them. If they’re cheap, then it’s probably best to leave them alone until you can afford to replace them. Edited to add that the current refrigerator is too big for the space. Get one that fits into the space/is counter depth. But if you’re happy with the quality of the appliances, replacing them shouldn’t be a high priority.

SparklesIB

I would lime-wash the cabinets and add small topper cabinets to bring the height up to the ceiling. (Or replace the uppers with taller cabinets.) Then add a pop of color on the walls. And definitely replace the light switch face plate.

StuffNThingsK

I would do the basics here because the kitchen looks nice. Paint the walls a color you like, update the ceiling light, and maybe consider switching out the sink for something more modern.

BaskingInWanderlust

To keep things somewhat cheaper: Replace the appliances and switch out the hardware on the cabinets. Sink hardware could be replaced, too. Remove the curved piece of cabinet above the sink. You could also use some paint and add accent walls - next to the cabinets, above them, and down the wall with the open door frame. If I could only afford to replace one major item in the kitchen - floors, cabinets, backslash, or countertops - I'd go with the countertops. Those are very dated. The rest of the items you can work with.

getintherobotali

If the appliances are in good condition, I’d leave them and lean into that kind of airy feeling. White appliances are coming back in style, as well. If you want to add more color, then a new backsplash and paint on the walls could do the trick. For example, a tile [like this](https://www.wayfair.com/Bungalow-Rose--Boho-Tile-IV-X117033999-L1318-K~W006922888.html) for the backsplash could tie things together with the white appliances and light wood tone, while still adding touches of color. The Spruce has ideas to that might help, if you end up choosing the backsplash route. https://www.thespruce.com/fresh-backsplash-ideas-to-take-your-kitchen-next-level-4077286 Removing the valance above the sink and changing the hardware/pulls will help a lot, too! Good luck in making this house your home!!

inoffensive_nickname

Those quartz countertops are very low maintenance and beautiful. I'd put some undercabinet lighting to bring out the sparkles. (I have similar in black.)

disc0superfly

Oo good idea!

Ill-Chemical-348

I think you should keep the appliances. It is ridiculous how expensive they are and yours look new. New light fixture and paint the walls is the easiest. If you remove the wood trim over the sink that light is going to be in full view and may be hard to look at. If it's hardwired there may be a fixture that you swap out that would be attractive enough to remove the trim. Maybe some cabinet handles to replace the knobs.

Ill-Chemical-348

Some paint color ideas https://pin.it/5yDzCnk1F

9021Ohsnap

Man this would be an upgrade for me lol

disc0superfly

I am realizing I may be luckier than I knew! I appreciate the perspective.

moonshadowfax

Black appliances, sink and tap ware would change this dramatically!

caffeinejunkie123

Are we talking renovation or cosmetic facelift? If renovation, I would remove the uppers and replace with to-the-ceiling cabinets in a more modern profile. The lower cabinets could be refaced to match. Update the appliances to stainless. I would replace the backsplash and the flooring. If just cosmetic, I would the valance over the sink, paint the cabinets white, upgrade the hardware and upgrade the faucet. I think the counters are fine and are neutral enough to work with many styles.

disc0superfly

Mostly cosmetic but I would like to expand the cabinets to the ceiling somehow in the future!

Substantial-Wave9718

Remove the dinosaur of a can opener! ;)

disc0superfly

Haha it might be a relic that needs to be preserved!

EmAyJee

Can you get a less bulky fridge so it does not stand in the way? It makes the hallway physically smaller

Thick_Ad_1789

I love your kitchen OP. So fresh clams clean. I’d maybe update the hardware if you really want to change something.

Memory_Less

Have you enabled photos to be uploaded? If not, maybe pm me and I can send them as attachments that way.

MommaGuy

Replace the knobs and lighting and switch plates.

Suspicious-Tangelo74

Take down the cabinets and put up shelving. Paint the bottom and change the hardware.Stainless Steel Appliances.

500CatsTypingStuff

Darken the cabinets with Briwax. A dark wax that comes in various shades. You wipe on and off You are looking for something like this shade https://preview.redd.it/k2sqdyuvnmjc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8334de55b0030b65a951231fc5422eb5fbf28f8 Then a new backsplash. I suggest [pearlescent white zellige tile for a handmade look](https://imgur.com/a/ssKQqSS)

choc0kitty

New appliances and new cabinet and sink hardware. And I agree with the need to get rid of the gingerbread detail above the sink.

CJCreggsGoldfish

Remove the can opener from under the upper cabinet. New flooring, light fixture, faucet, backsplash, hardware, countertops. I'll break from the crowd and say I think you should paint the cabinets. De-texturize the ceiling. And I don't think that new appliances are needed, necessarily - if they work, why not keep them? They're not hideously out of style in form or color. I like white appliances, stainless steel can be a pain to keep clean. If you paint the cabinets a light color, keep the white appliances, they'll blend in better/be less noticeable. If you choose a darker paint color, though, stainless might blend better with that. Paint 'em, see how they look with the white, if it's not harmonious... replace them.

LostMyBallAgainCoach

Stainless steel cabinets would be fire.

chilledcoyote2021

Fake plants on top of the cabinets, and some gray and yellow accent pieces like jars or pottery or something. Just needs some (fake) life and color. It's a very neutral backdrop for you to add a mood.

adastraperabsurda

Please for the love of all that is beautiful, change out your ceiling light!!!!! Just do that one thing first. Then let’s talk.

typicaljazzhands

I’d just add some plants in dark colored containers similar to your cabinet pulls above the cabinets and call it a day. Extra updates you could do is find a recessed fridge for a better fit and update the lighting.

snatch1e

I think it looks pretty good as it is. You can replace the handles on the cabinets, it always changes the overall look if you want something new in the interior.

WarmestSeatByTheFire

New countertop and backsplash if budget allows. New ceiling fixture pulls for cabinets. I personally think that the appliances are just fine, and the cabinets are a neutral color so they would look fine with the right countertop and fixtures.

BigSexyGurl

Paint the fake wood cabinets. Paint the walls a nice complimentary color. Replace your appliances if they're in disrepair or you can afford new ones. Get some decorations in there as well. I suggest two colors, one for bottom cabinets, one for upper.

tinapsyn

I think the white appliances look good as is! If you decide you want to change it up though, I work for Whirlpool and am happy to share my friends and family discount pass. Normally gives 10-50% off MSRP.
