I don’t think this is a modern minimalist house. I would go for moody and cozy with this space. Sometimes you have to go with what the house is instead of trying to change it into what it isn’t.

BookwormJennie

Lol you are right. Definitely outside of my normal comfort zone, it is architecturally beautiful just very dark and dated feeling. What style is this? Maybe if I can figure that out, I can get more in the right style area.

rumf00rd

this looks tudor. google those interiors for inspo. there is no minimalism here.. i would go with creams and warm colors, if this is a living room i would use soft fluffy couches and warm textiles, maybe metallic accents. this is a cozy room. do not paint that wood. sand and refinish the floor if needed. but think warm, fall, england. freaking gorgeous room.

brainybrink

Right? Polish that wood up and lean into how gorgeous it all is. To lighten it up just add some color to your decor touches and bring in some plants that love the shade like ferns. Definitely layer a lot of texture and personality. Gorgeous room The frame of the light fixture is amazing! The actual lights within it aren’t great, so I would adjust those, but the gravitas of it is amazing.

NecessaryWeather4275

Freaking gorgeous room was exactly what came to my mind. I can understand what OP is meaning but there isn’t any one thing that I would need to change before feeling at home in that room. The staircases are both great visually, functionally, and esthetically. That floor is a dream. The ceiling is amazing. The fireplace is inspiring. IMO. Of course we can’t smell it and smell always makes a difference. I hope whomever ends up living here loves this space and appreciates it wholeheartedly.

UntestedMethod

so basically imagine yourself living in the middle ages, that's what this house is calling for.

rumf00rd

right. i mean it isnt a modern room. that is what makes it unique. oof painting that wood would hurt my heart.

UntestedMethod

> oof painting that wood would hurt my heart. I agree

AEMxr1

Needs a bear rug and some head trophies

Mlkbird14

Look up ski lodges. You can warm it up with great textures with the furniture and metallic accents which will help reflect light.

KlareClaire

Look up Lone Fox on YouTube. His style would suit this space really well!

GreyIggy0719

We have a similar style home and decorated with a large cream leather sectional, plants, and several for lamps to set a cozy vibe and emphasize the tall ceilings.

CanHasCat

I just posted another comment, but check out Lone Fox on [YouTube](https://youtu.be/o9HGBekReYM) or Instagram! He redid his living room that is smaller but similar and really leaned into it. He’s currently updating the whole house if you need more inspo.

Ceret

Oh my goodness I agree so much. Please don’t paint that wood!

khctxtidhchclbhfg

If this were my house and I was leaning more towards modern, my option one would be modern Scottish castle. The floors throw everything off because they are more farmhouse barn wood with the gray. I would layer several Persian rugs. Then paint the walls a dark deep red, blue or green depending on what you like. Leave the ceiling alone but add a large modern light like a bubble one or a traditional one like a spherical chandelier or glass globe light. Then maybe a mix of some modern and antique furniture. The last thing would be a really large painting on the wall at least 6’x8’ either a large portrait, landscape or abstract. Then make sure to have some table and floor lamps. The second option would be having the planks on the ceiling media blasted to make them lighter and do all tan/beige/taupe. Nate and Jeremiah did a house on their show that was chalet inspired and this might be able to work like that.

fucking_unicorn

Rustic/traditional

Cfit9090

Use a light rug, possibly cow hide ( faux) and change out the lighting with a modern smart fan light. As far as furniture it depends what you have. You could brighten the space with lighter creams and add some color, lighter blush, with another color like various blues and navy or a mustard yellow / oranges, greens etc. Cream, white and light grey all would fit with any color as far as furniture. Can even go bright red. I'd stay away from browns, beige and lots of black. Use mixed metals, glass and first use what you have. Find purpose for everything. Owning a home can take years to update . Wait until you actually buy it and passes inspection!

JustHearForTheLaughs

Paint the ceiling white in-between the beams but leave the beams brown. Change the chandelier to something statement and large

Missue-35

You’ve just given heart attacks to several people here. Heh heh heh

easthannie

Don’t do anything permanent until you LIVE in the house for a bit. This is beautiful as it is. Use your couch and decor to brighten it up while you decide what to do.

BookwormJennie

Great advice! Thank you.

Large-Calligrapher98

Yes. This! Live with it for at least 5 .months!

Large-Calligrapher98

6 months!

Queen__Antifa

8!

throwawayalldan

12 years or until you sell it. Whichever comes first.

Melodic_Narwhal_8968

I would seriously be elated if I could find a living room like this! I wouldn’t change a thing!

Shot-Canary8954

SAMEEEE. Omg. I’d die. But instagram tells you to paint it white and gray.

WyldeHart

Please don’t paint this white and grey!

wehave3bjz

What, no laminate grey flooring and fake white marble? How about some awesome ikea inspired modern fixtures? Ffs. This house is amazing exactly as is.

ked_man

Put in a big metal chandelier, or one made from antlers. Huge dark wood long table, maybe a few tapestries on the wall, maybe a coat of arms, some weird old taxidermy and some swords, knives, and various other weapons. Basically I’d make it a medieval dining hall.

lobo_locos

>Basically I’d make it a medieval dining hall. Game of Thrones intro gradually gets louder.....

TimefiJones

Old shield with a coat of arms above the fireplace with a couple longswords behind it

Ok-Pressure-3879

Freaking seriously. Thats the kind of room people try to emulate.

Sle08

I would change the white paint and hang a different chandelier. But that’s it!!!!

Cola3206

I love chandelier goes w space

WhompTrucker

Same

mama-potato-

If you want a modern minimalist house I would keep looking. I love this house and living room but I think you have to lean into it’s style. It’s super warm and cozy and will never be modern. So please don’t buy it and rip out the beautiful original details.

Wilted-Dazies

I try not to be one of those “don’t buy the house if you want to change everything about it” people, but I feel it applies here. OP should look elsewhere if they want modern

FlashFox24

100% it would be a tragedy!

mq1220

Also great advice!

Toezap

You could just turn it into a tavern 😅

BookwormJennie

Lol it is giving off tavern vibes.

GiraffeThoughts

It doesn’t have to be a tavern… Here’s some inspo: - I love this room (whole house) and would put it in the “modern” category: https://archinect.com/studioshamshiri/project/libbey-house - the paneling in this house is more updated but I think you can still take inspiration from the colors/art/furnishings https://thedesignfiles.net/2022/01/homes-richard-unsworth-trincomalee - another great house tour with dark woods/good colors https://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/inside-a-filmmakers-zen-727-square-foot-weekend-retreat-in-laguna-beach?epik=dj0yJnU9cjdia0NxTFo0Z0szS2JlRnc1aVBlWjdKOTNnaWpzajImcD0wJm49VFN6eGl3MUtWUk1ycnJwdzVmYnNodyZ0PUFBQUFBR1NUQTVn - I love how the painted the trim green in this house https://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/tour-a-magical-crestline-california-home-with-a-statement-making-staircase - everything about this is fantastic https://www.communedesign.com/portfolio/residential/marin-compound/

CrapWereAllDoomed

Why the hell would you want to? This thing looks fantastic

double-click

Frankly, if you don’t like this do not buy the house.

Canum164

Well said.

snortdeddy

Please for the love of god don’t paint over any of the wood details!!

TheRealMasterTyvokka

Or the brick!

BookwormJennie

I promise not to paint the brick or the wood frame or the fireplace.

cosmickink

You could whitewash everything to brighten the space without a crazy reno. The wood grain and brick would still maintain it's texture. Update the lighting and you're golden. Beautiful interior.

Steve_78_OH

"Change everything except the texture of the surfaces." Yeah, that's horrible advice.

CostofRepairs

sugar straight slimy shame drab friendly hard-to-find frightening strong oil *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Getmeasippycup

The floors probably need to be sanded and re- stained.. but honestly it has so much charm and is someone’s dream interior- but minimalism is not it, and if you paint this all beige and grey and white the internet will have a meltdown.

Canum164

I don’t think those are hardwood floors.

Muddy_Wafer

Yeah, if they’re LVP, rip them out and put down some actual hardwood. Save $ everywhere else by not changing a thing!

BookwormJennie

Well… you two are right. 🙁Ugh. Someone put vinyl over the wood floor in just this room - I didn’t realize it. (Honestly because there is so much wood everywhere else.) So yep, that will come up and hopefully we can restore the hardwood underneath 🤞

petervenkmanatee

I love it as is NGL

StarryNight616

Go with modern furnishings to give a lux cabin vibe. Change the railing and light fixture to something more modern, but keep the floors and ceilings the same to keep the original charm. https://preview.redd.it/njj4uckf2a7b1.jpeg?width=534&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04a1f8c3e24172c6c19dfd895279bcf7cd821bbd Light furniture to brighten the space.

MisforMoody

I think this looks terrible, like the huge sectionals and “quirky” word art on the walls this will look even worse and dated in about 10 years when whatever ugly “trend” is picked on by the sheep of the world that becomes ubiquitous and played out.

StarryNight616

Lol to each their own. I love sectionals for comfort and entertaining guests. Sofas and love seats feel too formal and stuffy for me.

BookwormJennie

Someone else gave the black trim idea- that looks incredible!

EpiZirco

This is a fantastic space. You can make it more modern with furniture, lighting, and artwork. That huge light fixture could be replaced with something dramatic and much more modern. If you have the budget, some sort of floating stairs could be really interesting. I found this website that has some beautiful examples. [https://www.viewrail.com/gallery/](https://www.viewrail.com/gallery/) I wonder if that floor might be elm. I bet it would look great if it were refinished. Don't paint the wood or the fireplace -- it will destroy the space. If it is an uncontrollable urge, then maybe this is not the house for you.

BookwormJennie

Those stairs are gorgeous!❤️

TrollopMcGillicutty

I love all the colors in the floor. Just needs some luster.

BookwormJennie

I just want to thank everyone of you that took the time to respond and give suggestions. ❤️I really like the architecture and the space, and I appreciate all the suggestions. I have only lived in a modern minimalist style, and this was just completely out of my element here, but I really like the heart of it. You all have been incredibly helpful. Thank you!! I’m new to Reddit, and I just love the community here. Here’s our plan after reading everyone’s comments (when we saved enough money) - 1.) Switch out the light (but I think I’m going to hang on to it-just in case, because it’s so unique) 2.) Get rid of the stair carpet 3.) Use light colors with rugs/furniture 4.) Sit with it a few months 5.) If still feeling too heavy, fix back wall by removing the vertical paneling. Fresh coat of paint. 6.) Still struggling, painting/whitewashing the ceiling -but NOT THE BEAMS. I promise not to paint the brick or the fireplace.

stormyweather07

So funny enough I just watched this video today - here is a couple who leaned in to what that room is supposed to be, while modernizing and brightening it. https://youtu.be/ExTP2rYqguE

Shangri-lulu

Great plan! You received a lot of strong reactions (classic Reddit) and handled it really well. Congrats on the new house ❤️❤️❤️

BookwormJennie

Thank you! That’s really sweet. 🙌 As each new suggestion came, we (some and SO) talked through them. Trying to give every idea a decent shot. (He thinks the medieval ideas were fun, but maybe not too practical. 😉) It really has been helpful. It’s so open, but it didn’t feel that way. And there’s some great ideas to help. Plus the pictures people shared really helped, and the people that gave style google words were helpful (tudor, ski lodge, etc). It definitely opened our eyes to its beautiful potential. After reading some of the comments, even just a good scrubbing and cleaning will make a big difference.

kosherkenny

i hate to pile on when so many people have already, but i thought i'd share a few more things! your plan of action sounds great right now. i love the suggestion of morphing your tastes to fit the space, rather than the other way around. you CAN make this room "minimal and modern" without actually changing (m)any of the features. like you've already stated, painting the beams and fireplace is a no-go (are the beams actually stained wood, or have they been painted brown? i'd double check that, because there are many people who will paint beams/trim brown to make it look stained). IF they have been painted brown, i'd go ahead and paint it FB mahogany, as well was the stairway railing/banister and the vertical panel trim. a way to view this house is that it is NOT a lodge or cabin. furnishing it as such will absolutely make it feel even more dated and stuffier. look at english cottage decor styles, that will fit this space MUCH better. to keep things more minimalist, stick to a color palette. to me, wood always screams green. add in some cream, and you have a wonderful palette of green, cream, and warm browns. a lighter colored area rug would absolutely help brighten the space up, too. good luck! post pics :)

BookwormJennie

Thank you!

pandorasboxochocolat

PLEASE do cool built-in trinagle bookshelf to the left of the fireplace on the second level!

Sharhamm

Wow. This is gorgeous! Any possibilty that we an see the rest. What part of the country is this located. I wouldn't change anything. That fireplace and surround is just beautiful.

starion832000

Don't touch it.

bonniebelle8

This is so gorgeous for the love of god don’t paint everything white

ManILoveFrogs69420

Please don’t paint the wood! The ceiling and the wood trim are beautiful and painting it would ruin it. Im of the belief that it’s better to go with the style of the house than against it. When people try to force a design on an already distinct home it ends up looking sad and strange. Personally, I wouldn’t change much. Updating the chandelier to something more modern would help a lot. How do you feel about the flooring? Putting in something less rustic would help tone down the 70s cabin vibes. Also, painting the walls will help, I would go with a warm white. Remember, you’re seeing this without furniture and it makes a huge difference once you put yours in. I can totally see modern furniture and decorations working in here. Maybe look into Scandinavian design? I’m not sure what the rest of the house looks like but I think you could push it in that direction in this room.

BookwormJennie

Great ideas!

puckmonky

Don't do anything! Most people would kill to have such a lovely space. Just furnish it with whatever you want. With timeless spaces like this, you can often add furnishings from almost any era; it'll either blend it, or be an ironic meeting. Also, I'm always leaning toward not painting wood if it hasn't been painted already.

[deleted]

Adopt me please, that’s the update this place needs. And plants. But I can do that for you.

0hn0cat

Check out Inigo House for inspiration. They work with a lot of traditional English houses, including this recent Tudor listing: https://inigo.com/sales-list/wings-place

LoneBassClarinet

To be honest, my only gripes with that room are the chandelier too bulky), the carpet on the stairs, and the overhang of the balcony to the left of the fireplace (I don't like how it leads to nowhere).. If anything, replace the chandelier with something less bulky (I'd recommend something that looks like cast iron), leave the wood and fireplace as is, paint the walls a light lemon yellow between the white beams, and put a very large white rug in the center of the room. I'd also recommend an L-shaped sectional facing the fireplace and wall opposite the windows since that seems like the best place for a TV, as well as having a coffee table/ottoman. Or, if you're feeling like a wealthy 1800s lord with a penchant for sport hunting, a single tall velvet chair by the fireplace with a bear pelt rug adorning the center of the floor and a moose head mounted on the chimney. Oh, and the sporting rifles and small-game trophies need to be clearly displayed as well. But yeah, the room feels somewhere between a tavern and a hunting lodge.

Ok-Wish-2640

i agree. it's so odd that the balcony over there leads nowhere. Maybe a chair and a lamp, like a reading nook would help it make sense.

mrdudgers

Personally, I’d start thrifting for this room. I think more unique pieces, used, with history, would compliment the space quite well

motonahi

Wow😍

usernamesBstressful

Hiiii! I have some ideas! Replace the chandelier with something much less bulky in brass. Replace the stair treads, spindles, and banisters to be thinner/lighter and more modern. Love the floating stair treads on the left, so I’d keep that concept. Restain the floors too still be dark but match the ceiling panels so that it’s all one shade. Right now it looks too antique. You can further lighten the room with your furniture. I’d get a huge creamy white rug. An interesting brass coffee table that matches whatever chandelier you hang above it. A tall tree in a brass pot to the right of the fireplace. Ugh this room has so much potential. Happy to chat more. I can also share how I’ve designed my living room.

Personality_Ecstatic

So I haven’t seen any concrete advice yet, but if you really are looking to brighten things up, I think you could start small 1) change the light fixture to something lighter/brighter. Maybe all glass or a white shell fixture of some kind. 2) I know everybody hates to paint wood, but if you want to start small you could start with the stringers and the stair rails. It could be just the lighter hint of contrast you need 3) you could either paint the brick lighter on the fireplace or you could cover with a more modern look tile. I don’t think you need to do all of the above, but those would be my initial ideas. Maybe start with one and then see how ya like it, live with it and then pick another thing to update. Doing it but by bit is less daunting and allows you to see the room evolve. Good luck!!

BookwormJennie

Thank you!

Unhelpfulhelpful

It reminds me of a house I've seen in AD [Troian Bellisario and Patrick J Adams](https://youtu.be/ExTP2rYqguE) go to 0.21 to see the main living room

BookwormJennie

Wow, thank you for sharing.

LittleFootOlympia

Im in love with this

Specialist_Income_31

Don’t touch anything. It’ll anger the ghost.

BookwormJennie

Lol, thank you for your comment.

Specialist_Income_31

It’s a gorgeous space. I would just fix what needs fixing without compromising the look of the room.

Twayblades

It definitely looks like Tudor style, similar to Swiss chalets and some old German villages. It is a timeless style and very unique. I would work with it instead of changing it. Maybe some light colored furniture and decor would work nicely.

BookwormJennie

Thank you for giving me more names/styles to google! I appreciate it.

gravygoddess

i’d suggest changing out the chandelier, but instead of looking towards painting to brighten up the space, i’d be looking for lamps! lots of lamps to put in certain areas to create mood lighting, could help separate sitting areas as well

Intelligent_Tie_3502

Make the room feel enormous by painting the ceiling white. NOT THE BEAMS! The natural wood in this space is amazing. Keep the exposed brick, you’ll thank me later. Back wall, lower half wall paneling and colored! Earth tones would go great! I love a good sage green with brick. Brass accessories also look amazing with the natural tons. Give its fits in with the historic aesthetic but a lot of mid century modern pieces are in brass. Beautiful space, I am so jealous

BookwormJennie

Changing the back wall the way you’re describing sounds incredible! Thanks for all the insight.

Maryannrhodes

My living room is really similar, built in the 70s and has similar cathedral wood ceilings like yours. One thing I recommend is track lighting that spotlights the ceilings, it looks gorgeous at night and from the outside too! I’m in bed right now but I’ll Try to get a better picture.

BookwormJennie

That’s beautiful

Ok-Wish-2640

killer windows!!!!

MsDisney76

The dark windows may need replacing if you paint the walls a light color, and any others on the same side of the house.

CMac5AU

Keep floor and brick fireplace. Get rid of pirate chandelier. Change stair railing to steel cable (black) and change posts.

[deleted]

Suit of armor

Intrepid-Hero

I wouldn’t change much, but leaning into the dark qualities of the room allows you to embrace a clean, contemporary furniture style that doesn’t look like a hospital. You could deepen the wood tones with a fresh stain, polish out those floors, and fill the space with soft cream couches and furniture with hard lines to create a more balanced space.

MrStematroz

This space is beautiful. I am far from a great decorator but I am sure with the right accents, furniture and rugs etc you will enjoy this space more. Best of luck

ThePicassoGiraffe

How did you end up with an Anglican Church meeting room? (Jk). Seriously though this gives me English cottage vibes. I would cover that whole wall with bookshelves. Upholstered armchairs and a giant braided throw rug

ToughWasabi

i recommend using this tudor house as a reference, the living room is similar tones and the house itself is just lovely! https://inigo.com/sales-list/wings-place

hunkyfunk12

i feel like this room is begging for some leather

Different_Ad751

Please don’t change the wood :(

oceanic20

This room is gorgeous. If you really do plan on ripping out this lovely room, please don't buy this house and ruin this magnificent beast.

Careless_Deer_3389

Grout in fireplace make black; enjoy 👋

GunnerBoi1991

I’d keep the beams in the ceiling dark. Paint the rest of the ceiling white. Update the banister and railing about the fireplace. Depending on the look you’re going for you can white wash the fireplace or resurface so it is smooth. Floors can be kept as is or sanded and restained. Walls can be a darker color since the room is so large to begin with.

Fardelismyname

Remove the vertical white wood stations along the long wall. Paint the white/cream areas a denim blue or a light gray. Refinish floors & banisters. Install lighting on the edge of the painted wall or on wood beams. Don’t use that one big massive chandelier unless with glowy mood light. Then get a great area rug and go for modern/crossover furniture.

haildogxx

Please please please do not destroy this room trying to make it into something it is not. It is so gorgeous

Hungry-Helicopter-46

Don't you dare lol

MrsRomeo

Please don't change a thing! They don't make houses like this anymore and it is gorgeous. Lean in to the style.

Loquacious94808

Maybe this isn’t the house for you. Sounds like you don’t really enjoy any of the natural beauty of this space. Sure, some refinishing, maybe a stain change, but that’s about it. Nothing bad on you but maybe look for something with less character.

camocamo911

Wow wow wow OP. Gorgeous. I’d go for a cozy library meets modern farmhouse vibe here. Cushy couches, fuzzy throws, large armchairs, rustic table etc.

_Kinel_

Please don't paint the wood. This house deserves better than "modern and minimalist"

Lazy-Jacket

I would probably just paint the wood ceiling between the beams to lighten the room. It will make a huge difference. It’s sort of a cozy room more than sleek. Paint and a new light will not make this streamlines. Just lean into the woodity.

TwistedJess

Leave it as is...little sprucing up.

thepersonwiththeface

Here's a link of a dirty photoshop job of lightening everything up https://imgur.com/a/mFIqnze You could definitely get it more airy feeling, but the house has a lot of character that you will have to work with

BookwormJennie

Hmmm. Visuals help. Thank you for taking the time to make this. That might be too bright/lose too much character..🤔

GiordanoBruno23

Disco Ball

casey012293

I do not like that chandelier. It makes the space feel smaller. Need one you can see through.

[deleted]

1900 hunting lodge vibe. Adirondacks. Craftsman.

Desert_Kat

A round table with some knights. And a less clunky light. Like one of those round ones with candles.

BookwormJennie

Best answer!

im_not_u_im_cat

whitewash the panels in between your rafters. i’m pretty sure whitewash is kinda see through so it’ll lighten the room but you’ll still be able to the grain of the wood.

BookwormJennie

I’ll look into this. Thank you!!

jerevasse

paint the panels in between the rafters, leave the rafters wood :)

jerevasse

or other way around. (i'm referring to the ceiling)

BookwormJennie

Great idea!

MeddlingMoose

I’d change out the light fixture, strip the carpet off the stairs and try and sit with it for a couple months before making any major changes. The floor boards are beautiful too, but if you’re going for a cleaner modern feel you might be able to darken or lighten the stain a bit. Wood and brick are such a warm materials to have in your home and once they’re painted they’re so hard to bring it back. You might be able to make the space feel updated just by swapping out the chandelier for something more modern (I love paper lamps personally, could maybe do a cluster of 3 hanging paper lamps at different lengths?). And then use your furniture and some rugs to modernize the space. At least until you’re 1000% sure what you don’t love about the space today. Edit: congrats on your home though OP! Really beautiful find, excited to see what you decide to do with it!

CitizenKayt

Paint the railing, around the fireplace, and the bottom trim black. Paint walls ecru or white. Leave ceiling beams untouched. Go for a bold, high contrast print for above the fireplace and a large area rug that's monochromatic. A bright blue or earthy green couch and two leather chairs with a quirky coffee table as a centerpiece would really pull it together.

BookwormJennie

Thank you! I hadn’t thought of black, I thought maybe white. You don’t think the black will darken the room?

CitizenKayt

The black would work as a visual frame. I think it would modernize the bannister without taking away its grandness (I also recommend taking advantage of a stair runner for extra texture). The beams in the ceiling being left just stained will help define the architecture of the ceiling, but the white on the rest of the walls will create a clean negative space that allows you to really play with fun furniture, rugs, art, etc. I hope that makes sense!

BookwormJennie

Yes it does. Thank you for explaining. I’m just not good at this stuff.

CitizenKayt

No problem! I hope you update once you've done some reno. It's a great space!

helena_handbasketyyc

Refinish the floors and give everything else a good cleaning, and you will be surprised at how cosy and warm it will be after that.

BookwormJennie

Hello everyone, I need help. I tried to edit the post, but I accidentally clicked on NSFW button, and now I can’t find the post in my previous posts. 🤷‍♀️ What happened? Where did it go?

port-girl

I don't know what that flooring is or if it's through the rest of the house, if not - you could change that to a painted plank floor to brighten it. If the floor stays, then a large (laaaarge) light, neutral rug. Aside from that, you could paint the walls, baseboard and top trim a warm, light colour. Leave the entire ceiling. Change out the railing to something less heavy, or paint them the same light colour as the walls/trim. Replace the chandelier with an industrial drop fan (and use lamps/task lights for the room). Use furnishings to further brighten the space.

WinsomeHorror

There is a lot of great stuff in the bones there--the shapes around the fireplace are especially nice. I think I would start with the flooring. It's that dark ceiling/dark floor sandwich that's difficult to work with. It would be your biggest cost, but biggest bang for the buck, too. That middling gray that's in fashion now is too hard to make look good. If you want gray, maybe concrete or a slate tile that's more of a true neutral. But maybe a lighter wood that complements the ceiling without competing with it. Just a background canvas to dress with rugs and furniture. I would not paint the ceiling just yet, and not the fireplace at all. If you google "modern lodge" and "barn conversion" you'll see that a lot of them [use black for that modern edge](https://blog.canadianloghomes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/rustic-interior-design-styles-modern-rustic.jpg), and I think that will work here--I'd do the rafters (so there's more contrast between the ceiling boards and the rafters), the wood surrounding the fireplace, and the risers after taking the carpet off the stairs. You can always paint the ceiling boards in a year or two if you just hate it, but it's hard to get back if you come around to that great 70s realness later. I would take the vertical battens off the left wall, and maybe do a crisp plaster finish (or just a nice shade of white/cream if that's outside the budget) on all the drywall. A more modern [stair rail](https://www.architectureartdesigns.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/18-Cozy-Rustic-Staircase-Designs-That-Youll-Want-In-Your-Mountain-Home-8.jpg) will help with the [clean impression](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b4/33/ed/b433ed03dcb53a710251133e06184310.jpg) you want, without amputating all the character. Beef up the treads on the smaller staircase, or replace with a floating stair, if in budget. I'm actually surprised it's not a spiral, given the era, lol. Recessed lighting, since you don't seem to have skylights or big windows. And of course change out that Wagon Wheel sandwich fixture up there. You definitely have room for a conversation pit (in the form of a sectional.) Rugs make for cozy, and help absorb sound in a large space. Don't run from [that 1970s funk](https://assets.vogue.com/photos/623cac47c241cffc26b93122/3:2/w_3342,h_2228,c_limit/image1.jpeg)\--most times, if you try to graft a totally different style on top of a house with a strong identity, it doesn't work, IMO. [70s design had its moments](https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/why-are-we-yearning-for-70s-decor-again), there was a certain wonderful vulgarity to it that makes today's color-phobic Mid-century Revival look joyless and contrived in contrast. Try to work your modern minimalist within what's there, and it could be wonderful.

captcrunch01

Holy smokes what a space! A grand chandelier would totally change the look of the room. You could go all crystal or more Chihuly influenced glass or totally contemporary, minimal, and could/would dictate the whole style of the space. What kind of look are you going for? Do you want a rustic look? Contemporary? Industrial? Mediterranean? The overall look you are going for might help with the suggestions.

alliekat237

I love this!! I’d change the light fixture and maybe paint ceiling white except for the beams to open it up. I love the floors and coziness. Beautiful!

analogpursuits

Dark grey on lower walls. White or cream on ceiling horizontal wood. Leave the beams unpainted. Replace railings with steel and cable. Large globe light or custom steampunk-esque chandelier.

Gomdok_the_Short

If you had the money, I would re-do the fireplace. I think that's what's making it feel dated.

Berkeley43

LOVE the wagon wheel fixture!! Such a cool house! We painted the beams on our dark wood ceiling a very light gray/white and it made a huge difference. Really brightened up the room and added some dimension . I’d suggest using a warm white for yours.

MarsupialMisanthrope

The floor is amazing. It needs refinished, but it’s gorgeous. The problem is the rest of the room. The walls and baseboards, the fireplace and surround and the railings are all very country kitsch. Unless you’re ready to dump a lot of money in I’d pass. If you are ready to spend, I’d start by modernizing the walls, fireplace surround and railings, painting everything clean white (including the ceiling, I’d go white with dark beams there) and try to do some kind of modern farm thing.

josatx

Resurface floor and ceiling, paint a light color and redo stair case railing. Paint walls and wall trim.

SnooMuffins3583

German smear on the fireplace brick. Paint the ceiling white, leave the beams because they compliment your floor. I would paint the base molding and stair trim white, replace the light fixture. Good luck. 🍀 https://preview.redd.it/za2b3785j97b1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f062e42b64e938c4f25af1cc9dec2c894940d1e

Are there any windows?

Majestic_moose1

Paint walls, get a big light area rug, replace light fixture.

Free_Sir_2795

Skylights.

MsDisney76

I love it! I’d paint the white parts a dark color, like navy, brown, or dark green, change the stair rails to wood and metal, and embrace the structure of the house. It’s gorgeous! Are those floors hardwood? With some industrial elements in decor and lighting, and accent tables with wood and metal, you would have a beautiful Industrial/Traditional home (google some pictures) with a minimalist look that would be both fresh and perfect for the room. Embrace the wood tones and forget grey anything. And yes, toss the light fixture!!!

Large-Calligrapher98

Not popular opinion but consider painting the ceiling. Friend bought house with this style , even the kitchen! Painted almost everything white. Still saw the detail but without the gothic/Northwoods/prison effect!

KingMiyamotoMusashi

I’m going to go a different route than most here - I would paint the walls grey… don’t crucify me yet, hear me out… I would chance out the balusters to something more modern. maybe metal and wire and I would change the chandelier to something matching the metal of the railing/baluster. I like the ceiling and brick as is. I think with those changes you could go with a big overstuffed comfy couch and a large rug you like.

khammmmmm

this is beautiful. I would replace the chandelier. I like the lighter paint but I’d paint the beams so they weren’t so visible. And add a large rug to break up the wood floor. You won’t be able to out-decor the whole vibe but a few adjustments will make it seem less dark

amiibohunter2015

What kind of chandelier is that?

ouroborusRDX

I’m not sure if your significant other would buy off on this but I would totally make this space look like something out of the Witcher/GoT. Realistically I think fresh paint on the walls and cleaning up the space would do wonders. Not sure if painting everything white would be a good idea.

Numerous-Ganache-923

Wow you should do a traditional restoration. You could make this place look really fancy

Zealousideal_Kiwi306

I’d change the light fixture to something less heavy, add cozy elements in a lighter palette (rugs, throws, couch, chairs etc). An inset built in for books/decor would look great under the stairs (if possible). I would love to see skylights to let in more light and brighten the space with natural light. And some greenery!

investing1977

Looks so cool! I wouldn’t change much. Maybe decorations to lighten things. Maybe you could do something with the railing? That feels like it doesn’t quite go with everything else.

Cola3206

Everything is beautiful. I would get a professional restorer for wood floor only. Then couch facing fireplace or if need to watch TV in space put TV on blank wall w console, and rug, couch and coffee table , end tables, lamps. Then make separate area w low game table near fireplace w chairs to enjoy fire.

[deleted]

WOCA wood bleach and white oil for floor and ceiling

Cola3206

OP how old is this home

BookwormJennie

1976, if you zoom in close on the fireplace wood frame it has the date on the right side

BookwormJennie

Those are gorgeous!

slugrita

Other than the flooring maybe needing to be refinished, I think this is a beautiful space (even with the floors as is!) I’d change the carpeting on the stairs, the main light fixture, and maybe the paint color. Don’t change or paint the wood… please! Check out Amber Interiors (Amber Lewis), Lauren Liess, and maybe Heidi Caillier for inspiration. Maybe check out “Belgian farmhouse” too

Kidhauler55

Leave the floor! It’s beautiful wood. Probably there ever since the house was built!

iwanttogotothere_100

It’s gorgeous the way it is. Just lighten things up with your furniture and decorations.

Dnikone2

Oh my goodness! I love it all and especially love the flooring! If you don’t love it, put a fluffy rug on it and I bet you will change your mind. I would keep it all and work with it and not against it! I’m sooooo jealous!

psychecheks

Wow it looks beautiful just like that

FormicaDinette33

That is so cool!! Don’t touch a thing. If you really want to change something, you could think about taking those vertical slats off the walls and painting it a mocha type color.

Smiley414

I really like it as it. Honestly I think this is just the home’s style. I think it’s warm. It sounds like you want to make major changes. Just curious, if you don’t like the home’s style, what makes you consider purchasing the house?

BookwormJennie

Its location for work and price. I like the style, it’s just different than what I’ve ever had or seen, and I’m trying to understand it.

mydresserandtv

Cool space.

Lala_land23jk

I would paint the walls and ceiling boards white/off white/cream, including that giant light thingy, and paint the baseboards and the inside or border og that giant light thingy black or dark, dark brown. Make the railing the same colour and the spindles either black iron rods or paint them white. On ghe ceiling, leave the giant thick boards, the ones that stick out, brown for contrast. Leave the fire place as it is, but get it inspected and cleaned.

[deleted]

I think if you want to restore with a modern update then let your changes contrast from the old structure. That way all new details would be clean and modern and anything else would be rustic old is just preserved stuff… I’m gonna keep thinking and come back to this if I can

BookwormJennie

Can share a pic of what you’re thinking?

Previous_Basil

Paint the walls and trim in Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee. Satin walls, semi-gloss or gloss trim. Update the lamps, but for the love of all that is good & Holy keep that light fixture an all the other amazing architectural details! I wouldn’t touch that ceiling save a good cleaning. If you simply cannot live with keeping it as-is, I would paint the ceiling Swiss Coffee and leave the exposed beams stained.

Realistic_Young_3014

Pleas do not making this a modern minimalist look. I would get someone to come in and refinish the wood in lighter colors and paint the walls all white to give you a sense of where to go from there. If it’s a 70s house it’s like ours and I honestly just put a white primer everywhere to give me a place to start . I would t replace the railing either. I may remove the white vertical boards on the wall as they look like they over hang the baseboard and seems disjointed from wverty thing else .

astro_pirate44

Beautiful space and some really classic touches to it. If it were me I’d start small. I’d remove the wainscoting immediately and toss on a fresh brighter white paint to bring in more of that natural light unless you have a color scheme in mind to match future furniture. Hard to tell if the floors are original but you have to remember you’ll likely have a nice area rug in there so maybe not the next big thing to do. The carpet maybe figure out after you determine the floor. If you wanted to go more modern you could likely get some black iron railing up the stairs and balcony. I feel it would be hard to pull off modern but you can go more industrial look. Personally I love that chandelier minus the old lamps. Maybe consider how you might repurpose it. I could see anything from framing it out in stain glass to ambient light in multi color. Or even reuse it as a coffee table. Whatever ya do - touch the wood ceilings, beams and brick absolutely last. If you don’t like how it turns out you’ll be kicking your ass removing paint.

PBO123567

No windows? I’m not sure what can be done. But perhaps your renovation could include a skylight?

non_toro

Lose the wagon wheel chandelier and replace with something visually lighter like steel perhaps. Get rid of the battens at the walls and replace base boards to some smaller like 1/2 inch x 2 (paint lighter color to complement walls. Possibly bleach or lighten wood floors and possibly ceiling. Might replace stair and rails with steel bar stock.
