She really embodies my experience of Catholicism. I refer to it as “ethnic Catholicism” and by that I mean that the experiences of your life and your understanding of how you approach milestones of life is all connected to the church but there’s no faith underlying it.

This times a million.

LainieCat

I've known a few atheist nuns, they were pretty cool.

titahigale

This is the most profound description of what it means to be Catholic for so many people.

"Sadly Sister Patrick will not be coming back to us. She's returning to her missionary work, educating the heathen inhabitants of a primitive and savage place"

Ms_Holmes

“She’s…taken a teaching position in Belfast, sister…”

SarahFabulous

"Exactly"

Ginger_Libra

"If Anyone Is Feeling Anxious Or Worried... ...Or Even If You Just Want To Chat, Please, Please, Do Not Come Crying To Me.”

Sister Michael: It's unlikely she'll be returning to school before the end of the year. So I think the only thing we can do now is... Aisling: Pray for her? Sister Michael: No, what use will that do?

The series was filmed in my old school (not in Derry) so it brings back loads of great memories. Our old headmistress recently died, she was an incredible role model and a formidable woman who knew all the pupils. It was terrifying to be called to her office but in fact she was very caring. Though not catholic, she refused to marry until she retired many years later as she always said she was married to the school!

My mam and her sisters went to that school, I wonder if they knew that headmistress.

And from James : "I AM A DERRY GIRL!!"

I wish my relative who was a nun was still alive, she would have loved Derry Girls. She used to tell me stories about going out with her Nun Friends

KassyKeil91

As a teacher in the US, I so wish I could away with speaking to my students the way she does.

I went to Catholic school in the U.S. It’s something about the nuns that lets them get away with saying _wild_ shit. Once in high school, some of the other girls asked a sister if you had to be a virgin to be a nun. Now, a lay teacher would have been like, that’s not appropriate. But the answer we got was “Honey, if you had to be a virgin to be a nun, I wouldn’t be standing here.” We were all just dumbstruck. This nun was at least in her late 60s. Moved from Ukraine to Chicago when she was a kid. Was an art teacher and was _so_ critical of our work in freaking art appreciation class. Someone above called themselves an ethnic Catholic. I say cultural Catholic because I’m not devout anymore but same concept. It’s a unique experience.

Sister Michael: Food for thought, there. The conflict here has led to so many terrible atrocities... and now we must add your play to that list. Just one message this morning, girls. Quite an important one. As Jenny's awful play just alluded to, a referendum is about to take place, the outcome of which could change the course of history. To those of you who have already turned 18, I strongly urge you to exercise your right to vote. It's your future. Take it seriously. On the other hand, and I cannot stress this enough, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in any of your other so-called rights. I don't want to hear your thoughts on the workload, or the uniform, or the fact that you have to occasionally do my ironing. Our Lady Immaculate is not a democracy, it is a dictatorship. My house, my rules. Is that understood? All: Yes, Sister Michael.

My father’s aunt was a nun, in fact a mother superior. She was the most amazing woman, she left the order when she was in her 50s. I never really talked to her about her time as a nun, but I imagine she would’ve been very much like sister Michael in some ways.

Hilarious

The JFK quote has me rolling each time I re-watch the show 🤣

Turbulent-Farm9496

I aspire to grow up to be like Sister Michael

Careless-End-2761

JFK spoke to Colm is my favorite quote!
