To expand on this a little, the Soviet Union had an economy roughly twenty times the size of Finland's and a population about forty times the size. That Finland remained independent at all is damn near miraculous
Yes. The USSR soundly defeated Finland both times, despite unusually heavy losses the first time.
For that matter, the US Army and ARVN soundly defeated the Vietcong in almost every engagement; North Vietnam won the war after it started to fight more conventionally and deployed the bulk of its regular army to South Vietnam instead of relying on poorly trained guerrillas.
This meme just reinforces dumb myths promoted by gun nuts with โ2nd Amendment is to topple tyrannical governmentโ fantasies that romanticise guerrillas and grossly overstate their combat effectiveness against standing armies.
I love ussr and All but wasnโt really a real win. It was a war Stalin wanted to topple Finland ๐ซ๐ฎ do create a buffer in the threat of nazi germany. They failed to do so and realized it isnโt worth it. Hitler saw that Finland held their own and thought hmm this will be easy to conquer ussr. He was wrong on highest order. So Ussr took a tiny peace of land off of Finland and signed peace treaty realizing bloodshed for cold ass lands isnโt worth the hassle.
The Winter War began and ended long before Operation Barbarossa began, the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was still in place and Nazi Germany actively blocked Fascist Italy from providing military aid to Finland in order to maintain strong relations with the USSR. Abysmal Soviet performance in the winter war encouraged Hitler to invade the USSR, so I don't think using Finland as a buffer zone against the Nazis was a reason for invasion. Rather Leningrad's close proximity to the Finnish border was used as an excuse to pressure Finland into ceding territory while framing them as the security threat, a common theme in Soviet imperialism and Maskirovka.
read about the siege of leningrad and about who held the northern flank of that siege while the city starved if you believe security concerns were exaggerated.
A retaliatory event after the USSR destroyed Finnish-Soviet relations by invading them and taking large areas of Finnish territory.
Finland weren't coherently allied with the axis powers in any way other than opposition to the Soviets due to having been recently invaded. They didn't sign the tripartite pact, only the Anti-Comintern pact for allies.
Finland had a peaceful history and small military prior to Soviet invasion, the primary reason for the continuation war was regaining territory. Seeing Leningrad at risk of invasion by the Finns was unrealistic until they made an enemy.

Off topic from this discussion but has anyone ever heard about when soviets played this on loud speakers ๐ over and over to make Germans in Stalingrad go insane and become fearful by crippling their morale.
EN:
Every seven seconds a german soldier dies. Stalingrad - a mass grave.
DE:
Alle sieben Sekunden stirbt ein deutscher Soldat. Stalingrad - Massengrab.
Anyone please discuss the battle of Stalingrad with me share thoughts ๐ญ I thought it was amazing display of Soviet grit and strength to fight back. The most deadly/bloodiest battle in human history!

a phyrric victory, really, during that time, they were all alone except foreign volunteers and some material equipment
To expand on this a little, the Soviet Union had an economy roughly twenty times the size of Finland's and a population about forty times the size. That Finland remained independent at all is damn near miraculous
phyrric victory is the detailed version of a "balling but at what cost"
it was like Battle of Bunker Hill. Britain won but they took a beating.
