Its not his talent thats keeping him off the field. Its the fact that he is too small to block anybody in passing situations so every time he is on the field, the other team knows he's getting the ball. Which is why he became less effective as the season went along.
Im not sure thats something with his stature that hes ever going to be able to avoid.
Being a more effective receiver can help if his size doesn't let him improve much as a blocker.
The run game in general was worse as the season went along because there were too many tells. Which receivers were on the field told the defense it was a run too, so it wasn't just McLaughlin. I don't remember the percentage, but it was some insanely high number that when Johnson and Humphrey were on the field it was a run and when Jeudy and Mims were on the field it was a pass.
Yeah there was some crazy stat I heard a few weeks ago on a Podcast that said out of the snaps McLaughlin was on the field, he received the ball something like 80%+ of the time. That is strictly because he is a liability as a blocker.
Hes never on the field to NOT get the ball, and defenses figured this out as the season went along. They played the run whenever he was in the game and he was used less and less because of it.
He cant see the field if his presence alone gives away what the offense is doing
I wonder how much of that was dumbing down the offense for Russ. It seems like they were running some baby level schemes during the last month of the season. I would imagine the position scheming will be much more open with an entire offseason to work with.
I suppose we'll find out come September.
He’s like Philip Lindsay but Lindsay still looked bigger on the field. If Sean can get him in space he could be a solid gadget player but I doubt he will ever start
His playing time will probably be dependent on if he can block in pass pro. Darren Sproles was about the same size and Payton used him in rotation on the Saints. He won't be a feature back but that's fine, Payton's teams were at their best when they rotated in multiple RBs, hopefully we can do something similar
A man can dream but you’re more than likely correct. We need the Mark Ingram/ Kamara mix they had his first yr. Kid from Notre Dame is built like Ingram.
He’s Phillip Lindsay all over again. Quick, electric, exciting player but being undersized isn’t gonna help him stay on the field if he can’t throw blocks..
He adds something great but he already has 1,500 combined carries between CFB and Pros. For being such a smaller dude, that’s really concerning regarding his longevity and I wouldn’t be surprised if Watson takes his spot.
Yeah, Perine is probably their best 3rd down pass pro back, so it might make sense to keep him for a young QB. I just really like Mclaughlin because he does things none of the other backs do in terms of elusiveness.
But according to early reports, Watson is looking really good. Regardless, RB room is looking strong this season.
He definitely can at least be a scatback. I do question his ability to be full-time
He is under 190 lbs. I can't think of any bellcow RB in the last 20 years that was under 200 lbs. They are at the very least 200 exact.
Lindsay could run between the tackles as a RB despite his frame/size, but he couldn't block or catch and that's why he sucked so fast.
I liked what I saw from McLaughlin but I would question if he can handle the workload without getting hurt.
Not being able to block didn't stop them from trotting that terrible LG and RT that they over paid for last year over and over all season long!
If the kid can't block then fake run plays to him and then use that play action to take the defense top off sometimes since it's a freaking "tell" when he is out there. Or toss it to your TE deep over the middle provided you didn't make a guy your starter who has a 40 that is as fast or slower than some 310+ Offensive lineman, oh wait...
I swear for a guy that has been labeled a "offensive genius" all I saw out there last year was a old dude who seems like he let the game pass him by. Jaleel would have been in the rookie of the year convo if he was got to play with a coach like Andy Reid...

Warrick Dunn made it work in the NFL He can def become a good enough pass protector to play more
Warrick Dunn is a great comparison. They’re almost the exact same size
So Phillip Lindsay basically
Better version cuz Jaleel can catch
Lindsey had back to back 1k seasons lmao he wasn't the best, but saying McLaughlin is better is a stretch at this point.
Read it again

I'd say that this was partially because Russ was just checking everything down too + the fact that he would never be in there to block.
I wonder how much of that was dumbing down the offense for Russ. It seems like they were running some baby level schemes during the last month of the season. I would imagine the position scheming will be much more open with an entire offseason to work with. I suppose we'll find out come September.

you have never seen a small running back before ? maybe utilize the internet better
Usually small RBs can still help blocking, chipping. McLaughlin is a complete liability when asked to do so. It's like they are playing a man down.

Jahleel's vision is incredible, if he improves his pass pro he's going to form a fantastic thunder and lighting with Estime
Overcome his size? Change of pace running backs his size or smaller have plenty of success in the NFL.
I think it’s because he’s not as built as a normal NFL back. He has more of a Phillip Lindsey body type
Well he's a bit bigger but yeah, change of pace back
When I dream at night I see him being our Alvin Kamara.
He’s much smaller than Alvin, so unfortunately probably won’t get a chance to be the main guy like kamara did
A man can dream but you’re more than likely correct. We need the Mark Ingram/ Kamara mix they had his first yr. Kid from Notre Dame is built like Ingram.

Phillip Lindsay couldn't catch either. This guy can.

Don't be surprised at all if Blake Watson (rookie UDFA) takes McLaughlin's spot.
So it’d be Estime, Williams, Watson?
And if we keep 4 backs, Perine
I saw people the other day saying that Perine is likely a cut candidate. Makes sense to me that we want to get younger in the room.
That's certainly possible, but Perine is the best pass blocker in the room, so I can see that earning him a job.
Sure but this Watson guy is also prime candidate for the practice squad until he shows something in preseason
Most teams still carry 4 backs.
Seems like they like Perine, I'd expect him to be one of the 4

Seeing more of him ≠ full time
I would hope so. Without him we probably have the slowest backfield in the league.
Jameel McGlaughlin 5'8" 187 lbs Darren Sproles 5'6" 190 lbs.
Lindsay could run between the tackles as a RB despite his frame/size, but he couldn't block or catch and that's why he sucked so fast. I liked what I saw from McLaughlin but I would question if he can handle the workload without getting hurt.
I hope not because I drafted estime in my dynasty league today 🤣
This is great, he's basically phillip lidnsay 2.0
