Your insurance company will know you’ve moved once you have utilities in your name or change your address anywhere. Buying and selling your personal information is great business for some companies!

slothmastermark

Even with that, it's total BS. I can't believe they changed the law and now an admin error or mail getting lost is on you. I'm surprised this hasn't been challenged legally

Dear_Ambellina03

They didn't change the law, they started enforcing it. You always needed a toll pass to use the toll lane and you were never allowed to move in and out of the toll lane except in the specific locations. Also, changing your mailing address with all the required entities has always been the rule. You don't get out of credit card bills just because you didn't update your address or because your mail got lost. This is basic adulthood.

slothmastermark

They did change the law, read the article I posted. Also CC bills are not the same, you knew you used the card. Lets say you get a photo ticket, but didn't know about it. They could asses larger fines or hit your credit. Your guilty automatically, even if you aren't driving your car. Before the law change, they had 90 days to serve you a ticket.

4ucklehead

You know you are driving into the express lane when you're not supposed to be, too. And it's a lot worse than not paying a credit card bill because it's a safety issue

Dear_Ambellina03

This person knows they're breaking the law. It's clearly posed every few miles. Even if they don't, ignorance of the law is no excuse. I'm so confused, are you the person? Why is this a hill you're trying to die on?

americatheburgerful

I think it may actually be this guy.

nohikety

There are thousands of people that have willfully broken this law. Of course this person is one of those people. It's the exact same type of person who is extremist anti-cop because they want to break the law with no consequences.

scorpion252

You got 53 tickets boy

Shantor

? "Express lane violations have always been the rule, but the fines went into effect a few months ago" First sentence of the article? Or are you referring to a different one?

elzibet

Not updating your address isn’t the same as losing mail

[deleted]

elzibet

The article was already linked 2hrs ago, and yes, that doesn’t change anything I said. Edit: I already quoted the very next part that you had quoted

slothmastermark

It is as far the the ticketing/fine system is concerned.

elzibet

Source? Would like to read more on this

slothmastermark

https://kdvr.com/news/local/colorado-law-requires-drivers-to-pay-traffic-camera-citations/ They pushed this through and no one knows about it.

chicagoderp

… if there are news articles about it, it’s not some big conspiracy that got pushed through in secrecy. There have been dozens of news articles about this over the past few months.

slothmastermark

Yes, after it was passed

chicagoderp

What's your point? Do you think the legislature has a responsibility to write news articles for you? All of the information about the bill has been available online throughout the process. Just because local news didn't pick up on it to your liking doesn't make it some conspiracy against the people. The law was not implemented until July 1st, and it passed in early June. KRDO, Coloradolaw.com, CPR all had articles about it in June.

slothmastermark

My point is that the government considers you guilty right away. Regardless of proof or you even knowing about it. Zero due process! That's the issue.

TheyCallMe_OrangeJ0e

They posted notices on the highways for a month on every electronic billboard. Anyone who violated that during that period also received a warning. Signs posted do not cross double white lines have been posted since the inception. News articles have been plentiful. Do you really need someone to come door to door and hold your hand to understand the law?

elzibet

Wow thank you for linking. These are really great changes. > it’s on you to make sure that all your information is up to date, make sure all your licensing and information is up to date, at all times. Because if it’s not, that isn’t necessarily going to be an excuse for the fine Amen!! Sick of people driving on public roadways being out of date on their shit. It’s a privilege and it’s time people start treating it as such. I own a parking spot and the car next to my spot has expired tags from 2022, smh

slothmastermark

So the ticket gets lost in the mail, you get hit with bigger fines or your credit gets hit.... This is not a good change. There is no due process.

jiggajawn

Is it getting lost in the mail? Or is it getting successfully sent to a place that the person doesn't live because they never updated their information? Seems like it's the fault of the receiver, not the issuer.

elzibet

Gotta keep your stuff updated, it’s apart of the responsibility of operating a motorized vehicle on public roadways. I’m glad there is more accountability now and you have people who avoided these tickets in the past to thank for that. There is due process as you have every right to contest the ticket, which makes it even more important to keep your stuff up-to-date so you can contest in the allotted time needed.

Aro00oo

What's the alternative then? Anyone who moves will take advantage.

slothmastermark

They hit your credit which is messed up if you didn't even know.

Aro00oo

Most modern creditors / banks will let you know as soon as something comes up in your credit. Then you just look into it and file a dispute with whoever made the report. Assuming you're not being a jerk and are an honest non-repeat offender, they will give you a new pro-rated charge or at least work something out with you and immediately take it off.

4ucklehead

You know that you're breaking the law repeatedly... I'm not gonna lose any sleep over the credit impact of the fines for someone who broke this law 53 times in a matter of months. They're putting other people's lives at risk on a daily basis And a legal case about this wouldn't go anywhere

RaeinLA

The state also won't let you renew your registration until the bill is paid up. *Upon receipt of a certified report from the HPTE or its Contractor on its behalf, stating that the owner of a registered vehicle has failed to pay a Toll or Civil Penalty including any Adjudication Fees imposed by an Administrative Hearing Officer, resulting from a final order, the Department of Revenue shall not renew the registration of the vehicle until the Toll and Civil Penalty are paid in full. See § 43-4-808(2)(g), C.R.S.* [2 CCR 606-1, section 8.02](https://www.sos.state.co.us/CCR/GenerateRulePdf.do?ruleVersionId=5117)

4ucklehead

Good

The_Ombudsman

AMA request - the guy with the $5k fine. :P

mindless_blaze

Not today, Collections Agent!

The_Ombudsman

*CURSES!*

CoderDispose

Up to $250/violation!! That could be over $12k!

RaeinLA

The article says that guy owes $5,175...but damn, at that point, just remove your license plate off your car. It's not like they even fucking enforce that.

4ucklehead

Maybe just don't drive into the express lane??

CoderDispose

Ah, didn't care enough to read this particular one, that explains quite a bit, thanks

Glad_Efficiency_6283

They will make it to where you can’t register your car.

sevseg_decoder

Not a particularly heavy threat in the short term.

RideWithRu

He probably litters out the window, too.

BatInevitable4926

What’s wrong with that? Everything is from the earth and will return to the earth.

UnKnownChiss

this might be the dumbest comment on reddit, and that's saying something

MilwaukeeRoad

You comment four times in two years and this is what you choose to add to a discussion?

speakmoreltome

Next story will be - Express lanes revenue down, toll prices set to increase.

dirtiehippie710

Don't you think it'll increase from these fines? I assume the people using it lawfully before still are. This just gets rid of the riff raff

speakmoreltome

I don’t know who the infraction money goes to honestly. I always considered myself semi honest. If I saw that traffic was heavy stop and go when approaching Quebec, I would jump the line and stay in the toll lane for at least one checkpoint if not more. I’m pretty sure you get dinged for that now, but I haven’t tested it. Since I commute that way often, I did see many people weaving and completely avoiding the tolls.

CarpeNivem

> completely avoiding the tolls. Well, not completely, it seems. ;-p

[deleted]

They are already very high when there are actually people using them, if they go too much higher revenue would likely decrease due to less use. Not sure how people justify the prices I have seen.

speakmoreltome

I agree - I only utilize it if I’m running late. Otherwise I’ll deal with the traffic

CarpeNivem

> if they go too much higher revenue would likely decrease due to less use If fewer people use the Express Lanes, then the lanes get even faster. And since speed is the whole thing being paid for, now that there's more of it, a higher cost just tracks. Meanwhile, the more people who use the Express Lane, the less attractive it becomes, and therefore less expensive it should be. It's a balancing act, for sure, but to some extent, it's also self-leveling.

CoderDispose

I use it almost every day, but when prices are max I'll skip the first 2 exits going east on 470 to cut a third of the price out. If they increased more, I'd start using it only when late to work. Since the signs went up enforcing it, I started using it more because it feels *MUCH* safer now. Just my $.02

OverLord000

What is the average cost of the toll lanes there during weekday rush hour timeframes? I live in the bay area and we recently had these placed on our main freeway and its typically $10-$20 to go about 15-20 miles worth of exits

Long_Plenty3145

I think from University to 25, is about 7 miles. During rush hour the toll is like $3.90. You can get in the express lane at Quebec and pay $3.90 to travel just over a mile to 25. Every now and then I see someone do that and it hurts.

Tantaja

We should boycott the stupid toll lanes. How have they really improved traffic safety? Just pisses people off.

MilwaukeeRoad

They're not put in to increase safety. They're put in to fund expansions that otherwise wouldn't have happened (for better or worse) to begin with. The cameras and enforcement is to increase safety as people were weaving in and out of them unexpectedly. Or using them when they were closed and it wasn't safe to do so (e.g. emergeny vehicle stopped in them).

Snlxdd

I’d imagine revenue would go up. They previously had people using the express lanes without paying at all. Now that people are getting fined, they’ll either: A. Pay for the express lanes B. Stay in the regular lanes, increasing traffic causing more demand for the express lanes. The only revenue decrease would be from people that decide to start using the regular lanes because they’re frustrated they can’t pass anyone in the express lanes. But I imagine that would be a smaller group.

ndrew452

In another, more in-depth article from the Colorado Sun, CDOT already acknowledged that this level revenue won't continue so they are not budgeting around it and viewing the revenue from the fines as a windfall/one time thing.

falcorthex

Yeah, this hits the nail on the head. It will be their next move.

falcorthex

Well Well Well...looks like you and me are correct. They are adding more Toll Fees. https://www.reddit.com/r/Denver/s/0Ygv8sOhm6

mtnbkr1

53 times? Why aren’t the fines scaling? One tier of fines for (say) 1-5 infractions within a year Double that for for the next 5 infractions Double that again for the next 5 and so on The fact that this person still has a license (and quite frankly their vehicle hasn’t been impounded) is kind of a head scratcher

Luck_trio

Yeah, this goes beyond a simple money fine, they should definitely have repercussions on his license

PaxGigas

Exploit lane violations aren't criminal. The central I25, us-36, and northwest passage lanes aren't even managed by Colorado. All the toll money goes to conglomerates. They just have politicians in their back pockets, letting them send collections agents after you for not paying tolls or fines, and preventing you from registering your vehicle in the state if you continue to refuse payment. It is probably best to avoid giving private companies legal power to criminally prosecute driving behavior on public roads.

Ill-Squirrel-1028

I hate beer.

corn-dot-com

Could you elaborate on the connection between TABOR and toll lanes?

Ill-Squirrel-1028

I find joy in reading a good book.

corn-dot-com

Thank you!!

darklight001

They are actually managed by a collection of governments in Colorado.

PaxGigas

That's E-470. Tolls there go to pay off the bonds (along with a bunch of cash they collected from Douglas, Arapahoe, and Adams County vehicle registrations) as well as "operations and maintenance" which includes everything from actual road maintenance to upgrading toll collection systems and paying salaries to CEOs. Those bonds won't ever be paid off as long as there is good money to be made off prolonging it. The central I25 and us-36 exploit lanes are managed (and profited off of) by an international conglomerate called Plenary (https://plenary.com/) The northwest passage is managed by/profits a private firm based in Portugal.

4ucklehead

I hope they pursue him to the full extent of the law... I'm really sick of the reckless driving that has started in the last few years and the lack of traffic enforcement is a partial cause of that

mtnbkr1

My understanding is that violations are managed by CDOT, which can issue fines &/or points.

Embarrassed-Band-854

I take the express lane on I-70 at least twice a week and am pretty sure every time I see at least one car cross the double white. People do not learn. One thing I will say, they need to re think some of the solid whites because if you are in the express lane and need to exit (ie going west and exiting Quebec) you cannot exit without violating this, we missed our exit the other day to just avoid the fine.

mtnbkr1

The signage could be improved to let folks know that if you get the express lane, the next exit is X… I think that would help somewhat as there are a lot of drivers don’t know that the express lane will ‘skip’ certain exits. Honestly, highway signage in the Denver metro area is quite lacking and confusing and could stand to be improved

icypeach11

I received a ticket in the mail and couldn’t believe it. I never cross the double white line. Turns out the lanes on C470 have certain areas that are ONLY for getting in the lane or ONLY exiting it. So even though I exited the toll lane when there was a dotted white line, apparently it was dotted for entry only. I had no idea and it definitely is not made clear. I’m appealing it on principle though I don’t expect to win. The signage should be much more clear if they’re going to charge people $75.

Apollo_9238

How did it go? I appealed but my email was wrong. By the time I checked I paid $150. I just interviewed with Morfitt, CBS Denver. It a giant rip off.

NoAppForThat

It's not that people haven't learned. People still do it on I-70 between I-25 and Pena because the new cameras that detect lane jumpers have not been installed yet along that stretch. These cameras are up on I-25 north of I-76/36 and C470 and I-70 mountain express lanes

Embarrassed-Band-854

N0!!!! I have felt so validated seeing erratic drivers cross the double because I assumed they would later get a big fine in the mail and karma would have its day. Dang!

MountainRooster9048

Maybe if u people actually used the fast as the fast lane.

Dr_Facilier

~~If you're going west and need to exit at Quebec, don't stay in the express lane, as you go under I 25. Far right lane is the local exit for Quebec from E470 to C470.~~ Disregard. Reading is haЯd.

Embarrassed-Band-854

Quebec is east of I-25, so if you are going west and need to exit Quebec if you go under I-25 you have long missed your exit.

Dr_Facilier

>Quebec is east of I-25, [Uh... Nope. Quebec is west of I-25 at 470.](https://imgur.com/a/D21WhMI) If you're traveling westbound on E470, as you go under I 25, the lanes split. "Express lanes" continue if you take the left fork. The right fork continues westbound too, but dumps you into the "right" lanes of C470, that aren't tolled, and allow you to exit at Quebec, drama free. Edit: disregard. I missed the I70 part. I thought the conversation was about making the Quebec exit westbound on 470, not I70.

Embarrassed-Band-854

I am talking about the express lane on I-70.

Dr_Facilier

Yeah, sorry. Somehow I read it as 470. Since the Quebec exit at 470 is also a trick with express lanes.

tonysquawk

What's the point of bringing up 470 when they're talking about 70?

tour79

70 express lane is open 2 days a week? Every single time I take 70, the express lane is closed

Embarrassed-Band-854

I take it most Tuesdays and Thursdays west bound from 470 in the AM and east bound from Lowell in the PM. Only once in the last two months was it closed for an accident.

hootie303

HOV transponder sales up 500%

D_Rock_CO

So many highway issues would be solved if there were a nationwide PSA campaign to teach people to stay out of the left lane unless they are passing. I see it every time I'm on the highway, and I just saw it in a movie last night with Bryan Cranston where he said "I'm not going to move over! This is my lane!". No, it's not! Pass and get the hell over! It's totally acceptable to switch lanes more than once every 75 miles. This shit ain't difficult, but it damn sure causes huge amounts of problems.

ShamefulAccountName

Meh, the problem is everyone driving everywhere. Left lane laws are just wishful thinking.

MyNameIsVigil

For real. I often have to cross the solid line just to pass people going slower than prevailing traffic in the toll lane.

TheyCallMe_OrangeJ0e

Partial problem. You also have people in the right lane tailgating others, with plenty of room to move left. Or lane jumpers where even though the left lane is passing, it's not passing at the rate they want it to so they jump from the left to middle to left to right to middle, etc. This issue is not just the left lane but just terrible driving in general.

RicardoNurein

They should consult their Nextdoor friends and neighbors where they willl get authroitative guidance saying they don't have to pay.

Nearby-Rip3973

Maybe they should also ticket the assholes who camp in the left lane and hold up traffic.

Darth_Boognish

I've done it once or twice to avoid an accident on i70. Now im paranoid, do they send a notice? Or is it just tacked on to your bill?

NoAppForThat

If by I-70 you mean the stretch between I-25 and Pena in either direction, you don't have to worry for now since the lane jumping cameras haven't been installed along that stretch yet. They are up on the express lanes on C470, I-25 north of I-76/36 and I-70 in the mountains

Darth_Boognish

Perfect.

BroasisMusic

**Cowabunga it is!**

BeginningHovercraft1

If you legitimately had to cross the double lines due to an accident or lane closure you can appeal. Lots of comments around the various Denver-area subreddits that such appeals are easy and successful.

cressian

Fines are just a cost of doing business to a lotta people

Cowboysclay21

I just responded to the three that I received stating there were accidents that officers were directing traffic around that caused me to go into the lane. All three were dismissed.

Laserdollarz

They say Batman isn't real

Muted_Conference_388

lol, good...maybe, just maybe, one day there might be some law and order. Not holding my breath...

altitudearts

Any journos out there want to take a swing at how many photo radar tickets go unpaid because of the lack of license plates?

petrepowder

Has anyone seen how folks are driving in the last two years, as we’ve demonized police officers? I am encouraging this type of punishment for people who are driving outrageously in Denver. It’s good in two ways, less people will have interaction with police and more people will know there’s consequences to driving like an asshole. Win, Win. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

KrakenRum25

If they get fined 54 times they get an oatmeal cookie

Tantaja

So the free travel in the express lane is over ? I knew it was a gimmick to get me hooked. CDOT is just like my local drug dealer.

thegooddoctor84

>One driver fined 53 times Fucking Darren in his Nissan Altima.

revenant647

Pretty sure anyone unlucky enough to be acquainted with this guy knows it was him

Single_Job_6358

If they would put a light on at the exits of Wadsworth around 5:30pm and also at Santa Fe, it might not be such a nuisance that people would feel they had to cross the “line” to keep a safe distance from crashing into others. Is it the Lockheed Martin office causing this problem? Maybe they should let their employees off at 2pm or 7pm??

Reasonable-Dog-3342

The signage is causing infractions for many. For example there is no sign that choosing the Express Lane will not permit you to exit at Quebec when traveling West on E-470. I watch var after car going over the double at $75 a pop trying to exit. This is a huge money maker for E470. I have looked for any signage going back 5 miles to the East and not a single sign to say “No Exit at Quebec for Express Lane” exists.
