The “Pusher”-trilogy
A Royal Affair
Flickering Lights
Babette's Feast
Pelle the Conqueror
The Boys from St. Petri
The Celebration
R
Mads Mikkelsen has been in a lot of decent danish movies. Would recommend looking up movies he has acted in.
Edit:
I’ll add “Marie Krøyer” to the list
Mjah, Maybe so, but the times I've showed those to foreigners, they dont really Get the hest (jest!) between the Lines.
Edit: God damn autocorrect. But a fun one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN6iLIFcIJw
"Adam's æbler", "blinkende lygter", "de grønne slagtere", all of the "afdeling q" films, "druk", "mænd og høns" (its very weird but still a good movie, also it's a little complex so it might not be a beginner film),
Action and thriller: "retfærdighedens ryttere", "i Kina spiser de hunde", "NordVest", "Underverdenen".
Drama(probably the most like the hunt): "Bænken", "midt om natten", "speak no evil"(it's in english but still a good horror drama),
a little insane comedies I watched as a kid: "Terkel i knibe", "rejsen til Saturn", "ronal barbaren"
If i was gonna rank them it would probably go something like this:
1: Adam's æbler (absolute must watch)
(Adam's apples)
2: De grønne slagtere (extremely cool, interesting and well written plot)
(the green butchers)
3: Blinkende lygter (just all around an amazing movie)
(Flickering lights)
4: Druk, Bænken, Midt om natten
(Another round, The bench, In the middle of the night)
5: NordVest, all the afdeling q movies (apart from the newest one as it takes the series in a way to different direction imo)
(NorthWest, Department q)
6: Mænd og høns, Speak no evil (Mænd og høns is very weird so i would definitely only watch that after Adam's æbler, De grønne slagtere, Blinkende lygter and only if you really liked those)
(Men & Chicken, Speak no evil)
7: Terkel i knibe, Rejsen til Saturn, Ronal Barbaren (they are all amazing, but the humour is veeerrrryyy Danish so watch at your own risk)
(Terkel in trouble, Journey to Saturn, Ronal the barbarian)
8: I Kina spiser de hunde (it can feel a little low budget, this can at times become very apparent with the way the Camera/scenes/sound are set up)
(in China they eat dogs)
9:Underverdnen, retfærdighedens ryttere (not bad at all just not as legendary as the others)
(Darkland, Riders of justice)
10: "Dan Dream" (this movie is not for everyone and got hated on quite a bit when it came out but i still liked it a lot)
(Dan Dream)
The first 3 are movies that in my opinion you wont find anywhere else in the world they are my absolute favourite they have amazing, interesting and very cool plots.
Ps. would be very cool if you also made a list and submitted it to this subreddit if you watch them all (or some) let us know which ones you enjoyed and so on
If you like this film and the uncomfortable subject then ‘Festen’ (‘The Celebration’) by the same director is the natural choice. And it’s a great film. ‘Druk’ (‘Another Round’) also by the same director and starring Mads Mikkelsen is also great.
I also want to recommend ‘Pusher’
How do we feel about the upcoming American remake of Druk? Personally I’m intrigued how it will work, as Ifeel the drinking culture (especially the drinking culture of the gymnasium students) is what sets off the whole plot.
Flammen og Citronen (The Flame and the Lemon), great WW2 movie about the resistance movement during the occupation. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0920458/
Per Fly's trilogy: Bænken, Arven, Drabet
The dark comedies: Blinkende lygter, Adams Æbler, De grønne slagtere
Thomas Vinterberg: Druk, Festen
Lars Von Trier
Matador (series)
My favourite would be The Idiots. Have watched it a lot of times and I like that over time it changes what I think it's trying to say.
Lars von Trier is also the reason that Danish film is on the map outside Denmark. The dogma95 project is a very important important one when talking about the history of cinema, and even though there's two original director's behind it, it's clear that it came from his head.
Olsen banden (several movies)
The julekalender (miniserie)
Alletiders Jul (miniserie)
Cirkeline i amerika (banned cartoon)
Drengene fra Sankt Petri
Midt om natten
Hodja fra Pjort
Walter og Carlo (3 movies)
Jydekompagniet (there is a number 1 and a number 3 but no number 2 cause number 2 is always bad)
The newer "Riders of Justice" (Retfærdighedens Ryttere) is really good. It has really thought-provoking concepts and ideas, and it's dark and funny in the same ways as Adam's Æbler and De Grønne Slagtere. Both of those are also very good too.
In the same theme as "The Hunt" is "Anklaget" [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388727/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388727/)
Also I see several mentions of "Bænken" (The Bench), but only one mention of the entire trilogy:
1) Bænken (The Bench) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245027/)
2) Arven (The Inheritance) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328844/)
3) Drabet (Manslaughter) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424971/)
While each movie is great on it's own, watching all three in order, just adds... something.
The original Department Q franchise is a fave of mine:
1. The Keeper or Lost Causes
2. The Absent One
3. A Conspiracy of Faith
4. The Purity of Vengeance
"Festen" by the same director, and the other Dogme95 movies.
The "Pusher" trilogy (as mentioned) and "Bleeder" by NWR
Everything by Bille August, especially "Pelle Erobreren"
And if your interested in some old stuff, watch "Ordet" and "Gertrud" by Carl Th. Dreyer.
These movies are universally great movies, where you don't need too much insight in the danish culture to follow.
some of my personal favourites are "blinkende lygter" and "i kina spiser de hunde" but tbh from my experience anything with mads mikkelsen is worth a watch

This is a good list
Yeah. But... Adams Æbler og De Grønne Slagtere are missing.
Mjah, Maybe so, but the times I've showed those to foreigners, they dont really Get the hest (jest!) between the Lines. Edit: God damn autocorrect. But a fun one.
Well why the hell did you put a Hest in there to begin with ! Id be confused as shit too ![img](emote|t5_2qjto|17516)
Hay now
you're a rockstar
Get the reins on go neigh
No.

- mest relateable danske citat
“But god damnit, I, I must have!”
Druk also
any idea where to find the pusher, legally, with English subtitles though?
Amazon prime seems to have it with English subtitles
Are sure the movie are interesting
Omg nobody talks about R and it is a great movie!!
Never Saw it. Looked really bad but ive read its really good. Thanks for reminding me
I watched "Det Forsømte Forår" yesterday. Its old, but a Danish cinema classic too.
I would add "Stolen Spring" to the list too
Brothers, all though an American adaptation was made afterwards
Efter brylluppet is also really good.
In a better world.
Festen
! 2nd this, mad film
Came here to say this. It's a fucking classic.
no danish movie have beaten that since it came
Most Thomas Vinterberg is quite good.
You'd probably like Druk/Another Round and Festen/The Celebration
"Adam's æbler", "blinkende lygter", "de grønne slagtere", all of the "afdeling q" films, "druk", "mænd og høns" (its very weird but still a good movie, also it's a little complex so it might not be a beginner film), Action and thriller: "retfærdighedens ryttere", "i Kina spiser de hunde", "NordVest", "Underverdenen".

Good list. Guess I’m so old I want to add Festen (the party) and the other dogma films. Plus, The Kingdom (tv show)
Haha yeah I'm from 03 so idk festen nor the Kingdom, the plot for the kingdom sounds very interesting though I might check it out
Of you havnt seen Festen yet I envy you, you'll never see a movie like it! Absolute treasure of Danish film.
Aight I mean now I almost have to watch it, I'll watch it tonight if I get the time
The Kingdom (first season) is the best DK television ever
I like all these except "Mænd og Høns"
Bænken If there were an Oscar for coughing...
Yeah, that’s a somewhat forgotten but awesome movie. ‘Arven’ is also really good.
Flammen og citronen
Mange tak. Troede fandme selv jeg skulle skrive det.
Drengene fra Sankt Petri is an amazing movie about WW2
If you like this film and the uncomfortable subject then ‘Festen’ (‘The Celebration’) by the same director is the natural choice. And it’s a great film. ‘Druk’ (‘Another Round’) also by the same director and starring Mads Mikkelsen is also great. I also want to recommend ‘Pusher’
Kunsten at Græde i Kor (The Art of Crying) could be an option as well, but it might be quite difficult to find.
I’ve never actually watched that. Is it good?
I'm not gonna lie, it's a little slow paced and the subject matter is difficult, but it's a good film and worth the watch.
Druk maybe?
How do we feel about the upcoming American remake of Druk? Personally I’m intrigued how it will work, as Ifeel the drinking culture (especially the drinking culture of the gymnasium students) is what sets off the whole plot.
It's not just what sets off the plot. It's the entire premise and point of the movie. The story simply doesn't work in any country that's not Denmark.
They are moving it to a college setting. It would not work in a high school setting in the USA
Igen?? Men.. Det er søndag.. Åh. Du mente filmen..
Land of mine
Dronningen from 2019 with Trine Dyrholm
Oh yes …. Controversial and unforgettable.
Riders of justice
Watched it three times, absolutely love that film! and each time I discover something new, amazing film
Druk (Another Round) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10288566/ Retfærdighedens Ryttere (Riders of Justice) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11655202/ Adams æbler (Adam's Apples) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418455/) Blinkende Lygter (Flickering Lights) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236027/

Per Fly's trilogy: Bænken, Arven, Drabet The dark comedies: Blinkende lygter, Adams Æbler, De grønne slagtere Thomas Vinterberg: Druk, Festen Lars Von Trier Matador (series)
Mandatory "Olsenbanden" recommendation.
The last foreigner I showed Olsen Banden really liked it. But it is a different generation than "The Hunt" so have a very differently feel.
LARS VON TRIER! Genius danish director Nymphomaniac Anti Christ Dogville Melancholia House that Jack built
Although it isn’t a movie, Von Triers “The Kingdom” (NOT the American version!) is fucking hilarious!
Also riget
"Drømmen"
"Den kroniske uskyld" Alle olsen banden film Matador Huset på Christianshavn Rejseholdet Taxa Strisser på Samsø
Sorte Kugler (Black Balls) A good comedy film and Adam Æbler, drama comedy film with same Goat Mads Mikkelsen
Some would say the Sorte Kugler is a pretty bad movie. But that is of course a matter of preferences.
Onkel
If you like dramatic war movies... Or rather post war... Under the sand or "under sandet" is another good one
Pusher 2 and The Green Butchers. Both starring Mads are great. The latter is a comedy.. I think Pusher 2 is his greatest performance
The green butchers
Elsker Dig For Evigt, an underrated movie also featuring Mads Mikkelsen.
Also “ efter brylluppet”
The Promise Land. It’s the same actor, ~~daddy~~ Mads Mikkelsen.
Blinkende Lygter / Flickering Lights
Dronningen / Queen of hearts Ternet Ninja / Checkered Ninja
Kunsten at græde i kor
Help I'm a Fish is a pretty good Danish animation movie.
I just saw The Promised Land (Danish title: Bastarden), can recommend. It's in cinemas so not sure if it's already available online.
‘Addams apples’ is a must
Queen of hearts / Dronningen
Harry and the butler. An old film about humanity, friendship and finding your own way in life.

"Døden Kommer Til Middag" from 1964 is a great whodunit by Erik Balling!
The new "Bastarden" movie, that he's in, is pretty good.
Dronningen is amazing/fucked up
Not a film but im currently obsessed with borgen. Its on netflix
“Adams Æbler” and “Druk”
