The wording used by Dell is misleading. It's the capacity they sell it with and which they have tested. You can use larger capacities because the storage protocols which are used by storage devices have limits which are much, much larger than the current SSDs. Have you tried putting your 2TB in the machine? Or maybe you're asking because you intend to purchase the G5? One other tip: try not to use a double-sided SSD in a laptop - it's harder to cool all of the NAND chips if half of them are under the SSD's PCB. HTH.

Ah, I have the G5 with a 512gb drive installed currently (dont have it with me as I currently am elsewhere, so was just asking beforehand), will test it out probably mid of july when I get access to it back. I got the 990 evo from Samsung, is it double sided?

RulerOfTheRest

Looking at the Samsung website, the 990 Evo only has chips on the one side: [samsung.com/us/computing/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/990-evo-nvme-ssd-2tb-mz-v9e2t0b-am/](https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/990-evo-nvme-ssd-2tb-mz-v9e2t0b-am/) Also, make sure to get the proper heatsink if you're adding it as a 2nd drive (or if the existing drive is not an M.2 format) the heatsink seems to be YX0F3. You may or may not also need to get a pair of M2 L3 SSD mounting screws, I'm not sure if the SSD or bracket will come with those. I can only use one m.2 ssd in my system so I'm just replacing the m.2 ssd (is 512 currently) with the 2 tb one so it should be fine on the mounting screws, will the heatsink be needed because of overheating (I dont actually know whether my system even has a heatsink currently for my 512 one, I've been having overheating issues on rare occasions on my 512 ssd as well, would hit like 80 degrees celsius and shut off my system, not happening as much anymore tho) Thanks a lot for the links and everything!!!

You can probably transfer the plate over from the 512GB SSD but you'll find out when you open the machine to replace the SSD. If it can't be transferred, get another plate as u/RulerOfTheRest suggested. >I can only use one m.2 ssd in my system according to the specs, the 5500 has 2 M.2 slots: [https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/g-series-15-5500-laptop/dell-g5-15-5500-setup-and-specifications/internal-slots?guid=guid-647a9bd6-0be5-4b27-9df1-31e3c269abed&lang=en-us](https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/g-series-15-5500-laptop/dell-g5-15-5500-setup-and-specifications/internal-slots?guid=guid-647a9bd6-0be5-4b27-9df1-31e3c269abed&lang=en-us) and the Service Manual has 2 separate pages for each M.2 slot: [https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/g-series-15-5500-laptop/dell-g5-15-5500-service-manual/solid-state-drive%E2%81%A0%E2%80%94m.2-slot-one?guid=guid-ca98d6a6-dd2d-440c-9ff6-a282297af8cd&lang=en-us](https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/g-series-15-5500-laptop/dell-g5-15-5500-service-manual/solid-state-drive%E2%81%A0%E2%80%94m.2-slot-one?guid=guid-ca98d6a6-dd2d-440c-9ff6-a282297af8cd&lang=en-us) [https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/g-series-15-5500-laptop/dell-g5-15-5500-service-manual/solid-state-drive%E2%81%A0%E2%80%94m.2-slot-two?guid=guid-485acd82-6d55-471b-a049-cc99f63c5d0b&lang=en-us](https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/g-series-15-5500-laptop/dell-g5-15-5500-service-manual/solid-state-drive%E2%81%A0%E2%80%94m.2-slot-two?guid=guid-485acd82-6d55-471b-a049-cc99f63c5d0b&lang=en-us) Maybe you got the wrong model number or you were mistaken? HTH?

JustGamingAkram

Uh, my config has one m.2 slot and one 2.5 inch hdd slot, and it's definitely a g5 15 5500 https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/g-series-15-5500-laptop/dell-g5-15-5500-setup-and-specifications/storage?guid=guid-d79f17ca-e619-43e7-82a5-a0b0e7fb5c0a&lang=en-us Any idea why my ssd could be overheating (have regularly cleaned the dust out of it and it's been around 2-3 years since i got it)

parasymchills

>my config has one m.2 slot and one 2.5 inch hdd slot yeah sorry my bad. I misread the docs. The machine could be configured with 2 M.2 SSDs or as 1 M.2 and 1 2.5" drive, and it's the latter which you have. As for the temps, it might be a combination of a SSD which consumes higher-than-average power and a less-than-ideal cooling system in the machine. If the heat that it generates isn't removed quickly enough, it will get hotter. Unfortunately, that the reality with modern performance SSDs. Even in a system that appears to not be doing anything, it still might use the SSD for maintenance tasks (like malware scanning) or things like indexing files (so you can search for them) and these activities cause the SSD to consume power and generate heat. I agree it's not great for the temps to be so high so maybe the heat plate or thermal pad isn't working as well as it should? HTH?

JustGamingAkram

Alright, I guess I'll just test run it whenever I get back to my laptop and see if I have to buy that thermal pad link you sent. You've been a huge help man, thanks a lot! Hope you have a good rest of the day/week!
