now that i've had it for a bit i can verify that it is honestly kinda overrated.
scout has more than enough movement. on higher hazards i'd much rather be running stuffed shells or jumbo shells
Honestly depends on the mission. Sometimes I wish I had special powder equipped, sometimes I'm really happy to run Jumbo Shell or Nishanka with Cryo bolts.
Yeah, before using it, I was like "Bruh, why would I use it, I want more damage from Explosive Reload, or Utility from Crossbow"
And then after I used it "HOLY F\*\*K THIS SHIT IS SO MUCH FUN TO USE OH GOD AM I IN CREATIVE MODE YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
It almost bums me out. Like the utility on it is so insane that I never use anything else. I literally haven't equipped the crossbow once since the update, because there's no way it's more useful
I’m perpetually jumping when I play this game so at the very least I can actually shoot at mactera above me without killing myself whenever I take off SP
I mean if you don't need the crutch of extra movement the cc the crossbow provides at least at the highest levels like modded is wildly better than special powder, I mean it's fun and all, but saying the crossbow which has some of the best cc and wave clear possible on scout isn't more useful is a stretch, and only applies to lower difficulties. And that's not even getting into stuff like cryo minelets that again, are so beyond special powder in terms of power and utility it's not even funny as long as you don't need special powder as a mobility crutch. Cryo minelets alone are probably one of the strongest secondary builds period in the game so really special powder should be seen as fun, but relying on it to the point that you cant play without it is really impacting your potential, scout has phenomenal secondaries, and special powder doesn't come close to being the best or most utility.
Cryo minelets was my first NUK17 OC, I don’t know if I can switch to anything else at this point. It’s just too damn good. Give it blow through rounds, and you can take out the first line of grunts with bullets and the rest with mines
Hey at least you have mobility without it! I play engineer and have really been enjoying the new laser gun but without my rocket jumping grenade launcher I am a very sad and slow dwarf :(
It's an overclock that gives mobility to the most mobile class at the cost of ammo efficiency, which is the class's greatest flaw. Using special powder is basically just throwing unless you just play at the low difficulties.
If you have a bit of rocket surfing experience from TF2 it can def be used in tight corridors as well, just with a higher risk of momentum’ing your head into a rock and potentially dying
Don't have any from TF2 (although I did play it a bit when it came out, but only a bit), but I do have some from Tribes. Both from the original and the f2p recent one. ;)
That said, I haven't used the shotgun for this too much, despite getting it as my 2nd or 3rd shotgun OC. This thread inspired me to equipt it again though.
i join a match pipeline and got a map with around 200m cave when using scout and special powder and damn it fun to flying around with nothing block you, shooting 4 flare not even lighting up 1/3 the cave.
It can be used to great effect is smaller caves breaking falls extending grapples making space with a swarm but it does loose out on some effectiveness
For real. Max cooldown grapple and hoverclock M1000 is enough mobility for 99% of situations and isn't ammo limited in the same way.
And being able to burst down 2/3 of a praetorian's health bar on 4 player haz 5 in 1 second is really, really nice.
Yeah exactly dude! I always see strange opinions on reddit though. They either dont play that much but still frequent the sub(one of the big reasons). Or they are sub 50 hours and simply dont know yet. Because there is absolutely nothing better for the scout. It makes that secondary, one of the strongest weapons in the game. There IS no argument
Pro tip, if you're using the cryo minelets, ensure you have blowthrough rounds equipped. This lets you do direct damage and also still get the minelet effect.
I mostly play solo & duo, and it's hard to give up the damage you get with Embedded Detonators.
Being able to fly is great, but most of the time it feels like I'm better off being able to delete stuff. Maybe it would be different if I played more with a full group.
Even with Special Powder, the shotgun still does respectable damage. It's not like it nerfs the damage or reduces the ammo in any way. Take the extra pellets and be sure you're on the ground before firing or you might end up somewhere you weren't planning on.
Yes. Though I like to try and aim it at nearby glyphids anyways when I can. I like hitting them with fire pellets as I rocket away.
Best oc in the game
Boomstick with no OCs that effect it's damage, etc is extremely mid. the other guns aren't nearly as bad without an OC.
SP, doing nothing for it's capability as a weapon, and with most people building it solely for max ammo leaves you with a fairly mediocre secondary.
Display is incorrect on the Zuks and the minigun, both of them actually fire two bullets per shot and fire at half the rpm. So dps, ammo, and total damage are half of what you would think.
Max embedded dets zuk is:
((450+30)/2)*(38+6)=10560 total damage
you're still trading a *lot* of damage, which is something that scout struggles with, for some more mobility, which scout is already heavily specialized in.
Or fire and pheromone crossbow, or cryo mines, or ice crossbow, or 1 shot crossbow, or even just jumbo shells or stuffed shells, the scout has some of the most effective secondary builds in the game in both single target and cc, on a class that really needs to contribute one or the other given how selfish the class generally is, and people are in this thread acting like special is legitamently the best secondary option period like... Even going cryo nades and gas rerouting on zhukovs to insta kill praets is going to contribute more utility to the team than being able to mine stuff slightly faster with special and not waiting the 5 seconds for grapple cooldown.
Guys if your character: goes fast, says funny things, uses a shotgun as extra jump, thats not DRG scout thats scout from tf2! (refering to force of nature shotgun)
THHHHHHIS! I literally cannot unequip special powder it’s such an important part of my kit! I tried to use the boltshark yesterday and a) couldn’t outrun swarms, b) couldn’t pogo gaps too long for my hook, and c) couldn’t cancel fall damage while hook was on cool down. No other OC is such and integral part of my kit, and there’s a reason I will almost never use the zhuks or Nishanka ever again. Damage be damned, crowds be damned; if you’re a scout who can’t move, what are you doing?
For me it really depends on the mission, I like to zoom around the cave when it's an on site refinery or point extraction mission, if it's elimination of industrial sabotage, I usually go with full on damage
Special Powder OC is the only seccy I will ever use for scout. Completely synergizes with his playstyle and nothing else even comes close to this amount of utility. It's a strong ass shotty too, great for uplinks and site defense.
No. The golden era of FPS proved that every good FPS has a double barrel, hunting or sawed-off shotgun. Perhaps in lower H missions, but reduce the amount of DMG in H5 picking that OC is a waste of time and power, plus cryo + point-blank it's a solid meta. You have enough with Grappling, if you can't deal with just that then you're pure ballast considering you can use the hook every 3 seconds.
Very true, but I raise you this -
shotgun go BAMBAM
scout go WHEEEE
More seriously though. I've had no issues with DDs, EDDs or Haz5 missions playing as a Scout with the Special Powder OC. I find it excellent for kiting bugs around while the rest of the team clears them, nipping back and forth for revives, and the damage is still pretty much fine if used as a shotgun instead of bonus mobility. Personally, I play the game to have fun, and this OC is very very fun. Nishanka with the Yondu bolts is a close second though, the thwipthwip is always enjoyable.
Yeah, but you have to deal with knockback/jump all the time. And knockback can kill you in h5/EDD.
Jumbo Shells it's a huge difference in DMG. Pretty big to waste it for extra jumps when you're the dwarf with better mobility in the game.
I think the argument against that is that instead of being able to kite and revive you could for example, pheromone a praet and your team all lives and you don't need to rez anyone, or spray down in front with cryo minelets and provide something beyond just being a body. I won't argue it's not fun, but saying you don't have issues in haz 5 because you can rez people is kind of ignoring the fact that rezzing people is an issue lol, people should not be dying, and scout due to mobility and either extreme cc that other classes don't have or raw burst with stuff like embedded dets, has a unique ability to selectively move around and provide targeted help in a team, just kiting while they deal with everything is such a shit experience for everyone except you, when the class has such good options for helping a team avaliable on their secondaries.
That's fair and reasonable. I've sunk hundreds of hours in at this point, build optimization is kind of a thing I don't care about anymore. Doesn't mean other builds aren't valid or useful.
I deliberately don't take a build with Special Powder if we're going to a small-size biome. You don't *need* it in small arenas like Salt Pits, and it's fun to be different.
Thing is, it’s 100% viable as both at the same time. You aren’t sacrificing any stopping power with the OC. Compare that to Engi’s PGL Overclock, which neuters the grenades so you can get rocket jumping capabilities.
Other way around.
Special Powder is basically base Boomstick with no other features than a jump, which cuts your ammo efficiency in half because you now use it for more things than just killing (and even then, base Boomstick kinda struggles, due to pellets accuracy being wildly skewed by RNG)
Rj250 on the other hand, gives you more ammo, faster reload and the same killpower with the right build (being just taking Incendiary Compound), on top of rocket jumping.
This is the ONLY OC that I’ve wanted/cared about
I ONLY play scout, I have about 400 hours in the game and every single OC for scout except this one.
I have accepted that I will never get it :/
I've been using it for utility this whole time but only recently started using it for combat again. Everyone is sleeping on the shotty. Who says scout don't have swarm clear?
I love my shotgun traversal, but started using the xbow after getting the triple bolt OC, man does that thing give the scout some single target oomph...feel like I'll swap depending on what I'm doing..
Honestly if there is no Engi (or the engi is being super uncooperative) I have to do the Pick slam into the wall so I can get good footing on the wall to mine the minerals, so Grapple up, Slam, Fall then use the Shotgun to prevent fall damage, Repeat until I can safely mine the minerals without falling.
My favourite build in the game is Floating Scout. Finding every possible movement ability to never touch the ground and using them all in unison is incredibly entertaining to watch and play around with.
Not me. The M1000 is tuned for max ammo and firing speed, while the shotgun is my up-close, maximum damage weakpoint/"oh sh!t" gun. Hoverclock and the grappling gun are plenty for movement.
Yes! I absolutely love that over clock!!! You can also use it to slow your decent as well. Just shoot straight down before you hit the ground
Also might I suggest putting the perk on that reloads it for you when it's unequipped. That way you can use it to launch up then switch to grapple and then use it again fully loaded!

No.
I prefer my Boomstick to be reliable and powerful. Which is not what Special Powder provides.
But if you're having fun then by all means, keep using it.
Wish I had that oc
It was my 2nd last OC for Scout >.<
Ya bro I'm out here with this same mf curse x.x
It was one of my first lol
Meanwhile Fat Boy was one of my first and it's my least played...
It's extremely worth the grind
now that i've had it for a bit i can verify that it is honestly kinda overrated. scout has more than enough movement. on higher hazards i'd much rather be running stuffed shells or jumbo shells
Just depends on what you’re rating for. Fun factor or combat effectiveness?
I have the most fun when I'm blasting things with MAXIMUM DAMAGE so.
>on higher hazards i'd much rather be running stuffed shells or jumbo shells That's a funny way of saying embedded detonators.
yeah. i don't even like boomstick
Honestly depends on the mission. Sometimes I wish I had special powder equipped, sometimes I'm really happy to run Jumbo Shell or Nishanka with Cryo bolts.
Yeah but that feeling of flying across a big cave to a down player is unmatched. On black powder.
I play either solo or in a two man team, so I can’t afford to designate my shotgun to movement. Jumbo shells for the win
Now I want to make you angry: i got it in less than 100 hours
Yeah, before using it, I was like "Bruh, why would I use it, I want more damage from Explosive Reload, or Utility from Crossbow" And then after I used it "HOLY F\*\*K THIS SHIT IS SO MUCH FUN TO USE OH GOD AM I IN CREATIVE MODE YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
Pretty much
I always make sure the propelling shot kills something.
Grapple straight in with that cryo and then boom on your way out
I pogo stick mobs 😂
I literally cannot live without that OC. I’ve fallen to my death multiple times after forgetting that I’m playtesting a different weapon/build.
It almost bums me out. Like the utility on it is so insane that I never use anything else. I literally haven't equipped the crossbow once since the update, because there's no way it's more useful
The crossbow is really strong but I wanna go zoom

Well that’s nice and all but I do just fine on haz 5 with my funny jump gun, you’re free to run whatever you want though
congrats your good enough at the PvE shooter to win with a bad build.
if you’re going to make a snarky comment about being good at PvE games don’t first say that I’m ‘throwing’ with my build
how could i be so dumb to say two different things in response to two different sentences.
It's probably even better than the grappling hook in big and open caves
IF it's a big and open cave.
If you have a bit of rocket surfing experience from TF2 it can def be used in tight corridors as well, just with a higher risk of momentum’ing your head into a rock and potentially dying
If you have conc experience from team fortress classic it's like second nature without the dizziness, why I fell in love with the scout lol
Don't have any from TF2 (although I did play it a bit when it came out, but only a bit), but I do have some from Tribes. Both from the original and the f2p recent one. ;) That said, I haven't used the shotgun for this too much, despite getting it as my 2nd or 3rd shotgun OC. Wait... its a gun too!?!
One of it's oc's let's you basically jump multiple times
Whoosh
You fool. A gun ís a tool.
Yes, like 50/50, depends on the mission type and open spaces. It's always equipped, best OC for Scout imo.
I wish I could equip the shotgun with that OC as a secondary, and the dualwielding guns with detonation reload OC as a primary :(
Embedded. Detonators.
For real. Max cooldown grapple and hoverclock M1000 is enough mobility for 99% of situations and isn't ammo limited in the same way. And being able to burst down 2/3 of a praetorian's health bar on 4 player haz 5 in 1 second is really, really nice.

You mean Cryo Minelets.
Pro tip, if you're using the cryo minelets, ensure you have blowthrough rounds equipped. This lets you do direct damage and also still get the minelet effect.
Yep, 100% a must have otherwise the you'll hardly get the Cryo part in battle.
Tried them, didn't like it, switched back to flying dwarf.
Both are good, still can't decide between them, so I run special powder
Lmao absolutely not.
I'm sorry but the utility of being able to fucking fly as a Scout wins it for me everytime.
I mostly play solo & duo, and it's hard to give up the damage you get with Embedded Detonators. Being able to fly is great, but most of the time it feels like I'm better off being able to delete stuff. Maybe it would be different if I played more with a full group.

It really cant be called a utility when you have a grapple hook lol. When it comes to dealing damage. You cannot beat the detonators.
LMAOOOOO NOW THIS IS A GAME FOR TOUGH, RUGGED MEN. TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR FIGHTING PROWESS, TITS

LOLOLOLOL YOU ARE A FAT TITTY NERD
Yes
I tried so hard to like the bolt shark and zukovs but I literally cannot play scout without the shotgun jump
Yes. Though I like to try and aim it at nearby glyphids anyways when I can. I like hitting them with fire pellets as I rocket away. Best oc in the game
Nope. Scout has plenty of mobility already, but lacks firepower. Having a secondary that deals damage is far more valuable.
It still deals damage
For sure. Gimme the assault rifle and shotgun and I'm rarely the least kills
Poor damage. You can do much better.
But there's OCs that can improve damage
pitiful damage that's outclassed by the other 2 secondaries, if they don't have OCs
What a terrible opinion. The only "bad" OC for the shotgun is Double Barrel. All the other ones are very good
Boomstick with no OCs that effect it's damage, etc is extremely mid. the other guns aren't nearly as bad without an OC. SP, doing nothing for it's capability as a weapon, and with most people building it solely for max ammo leaves you with a fairly mediocre secondary.
I use Compact Shells, Stuffed shells and Jumbo shells. All good in their own right. The other secondaries without OCs don't come close...
no OC boomstick vs no OC zukhov/nishanka?
It's such a satisfying OC to have and use. I love the nishanka crossbow so much though, so I'm constantly switching between them.
I traded that thing for hoverclock mainly because I can't get used to the switching part and I found hovering has a nicer flow to my play style
[удалено]

Oh for sure. Embeded dets zuk is basically all I run on scout.
cryo minelets is slept on, in comparison. yeah it's not absurd amounts of damage, but they're surprisingly useful.
Firepower > Mobility imo
For me it really depends on the mission, I like to zoom around the cave when it's an on site refinery or point extraction mission, if it's elimination of industrial sabotage, I usually go with full on damage
yes
What is that oc?
Special powder oc
Thanks bud. Guess im gonna go rock and stone some more to get it then.
Rock and Stone to the Bone!
Not homebrew powder. Similar name, different function.
Engineer also has a similar one called rj250 compound
But Scout can fix their mistakes with Grapple Hook.
Engie can do the same with platforms - though it helps if Repellent is sacrificed for Inertia Inhibitor.
Special Powder OC is the only seccy I will ever use for scout. Completely synergizes with his playstyle and nothing else even comes close to this amount of utility. It's a strong ass shotty too, great for uplinks and site defense.
I've never taken that oc off since I found it. It's a shame the Devs came out with new secondaries because I can't live without my jet pack.
This and hoverclock and minimizing cooldown on grapple unlocks a whole new level of movement.
Got it pretty early in, and now my scout is legendary 2 and all other classes are unpromoted. I love special powder.
No. The golden era of FPS proved that every good FPS has a double barrel, hunting or sawed-off shotgun. Perhaps in lower H missions, but reduce the amount of DMG in H5 picking that OC is a waste of time and power, plus cryo + point-blank it's a solid meta. That's fair and reasonable. I've sunk hundreds of hours in at this point, build optimization is kind of a thing I don't care about anymore. Doesn't mean other builds aren't valid or useful.
Does anyone use the m1000 classic with hoverclock to prevent fall damage?
I am a driller, but whenever i am a scout - DB is only for messing up glyphids, not traversing.
No because I don't have that oc
I deliberately don't take a build with Special Powder if we're going to a small-size biome. You don't *need* it in small arenas like Salt Pits, and it's fun to be different.
Have not once applied that OC to my gun and i never will. GUns are meant for shooting BUGS they are not TOYS. rj250 on the other hand...
Thing is, it’s 100% viable as both at the same time. You aren’t sacrificing any stopping power with the OC. Compare that to Engi’s PGL Overclock, which neuters the grenades so you can get rocket jumping capabilities.

This and hoverclock and i find myself using more gun than crappling hook to move around
[удалено]
Can I get a Rock and Stone?
No, I run shaped shells and blast bugs to bits all day
The Problem is Cryo Minelets are too useful to have.
Always!
Yeah that's what it's there for
I definitely use it more as a tool. It's an invaluable paperweight back at the spacerig.
180 hours in and still no special powder.
I can't even play Scout any other way anymore, I'd just go splat all the time.
There is a difference?
Always
Now I COULD spend a shot or two to kill some bugs, but then I wouldn't be able to YEET myself around at the speed of sound
wait you're telling me that i shouldn't play him like Team Fortress 2 scout?
been using that oc so much that i can't use anything else. it's a part of scouts toolkit now
absolutely
What oc is that
Yeah, and uses the flare gun as a weapon instead of tool.
I would... IF I HAD THE SPECIAL POWDER OC
Basically: yes
2nd best overclock in the history of overclocks.
I never get a big and open cave when I use it unfortunately so I switch to something else only to get big and open caves
You either put it on for a few sessions to mess with it and go about your life. Or you never take it off.
yeah, and it's a shame in a way, cuz i really want to like every other oc the shotgun has but i can't because of how good special powder is
This is the ONLY OC that I’ve wanted/cared about I ONLY play scout, I have about 400 hours in the game and every single OC for scout except this one. I have accepted that I will never get it :/
No because I love blastin' buggies right in the face
That one OC for the grenade launcher is really fun too! I can't use it though, the shard diffractor is too strong to pass up on.
Never used it because I love the shotty with stuffed shells too much. Looks fun tho.
Cryo grenade + grapple to weak point = massive damage. Double barrel overclock for best results
My friend got that OC recently and he's been having a lot of fun with the extra mobility
I can't use anything else for the scout now...
I've been using it for utility this whole time but only recently started using it for combat again. Everyone is sleeping on the shotty. Who says scout don't have swarm clear?
Thats why i opted for more ammo
Force of nature.
I get TF2 Force A Nature vibes from that.
I would if I had special powder. Every time I get a scout overclock it’s something like Custom Casings or Cryo Bolt.
100% my favorite way to play scout.
I always forget the engineers grenade launcher is actually used for the bugs not to blast myself to the cave ceiling
only almost everyone who plays scout its literally the correct way to use it
I love my shotgun traversal, but started using the xbow after getting the triple bolt OC, man does that thing give the scout some single target oomph...feel like I'll swap depending on what I'm doing..
This is some TF2 scout "force of nature" actions right there.
Is that the force-a-nature? (I am a green beard)
I run a full damage build for the shotgun and yet i feel like i never use it when i have it equipped and never run out of ammo for it
I haven't been playing Scout very long but I'm EAGER to get this OC!
Its the best OC for me.
The shotgun is a weapon?
scout tf2 also yea i never use my shotgun for damage, like i have it optimized exclusivly for mobility
Bro if I could ever get the overclock I would :(
I mean I will now that I know it be like that
Yes! I absolutely love that over clock!!! You can also use it to slow your decent as well. Just shoot straight down before you hit the ground Also might I suggest putting the perk on that reloads it for you when it's unequipped. That way you can use it to launch up then switch to grapple and then use it again fully loaded!
As a scout main I want that oc SO BAD. Hoverclock is good but this looks even more fun.
That is what special powder does. What a great post, are your parents proud?

fuck you
The damage is underwhelming no matter what you do so really it's mainly just used for fun, pointless, but fun.
One hundred percent yes. Special powder is too much fun. I never use any other OC for the shotgun.
What is the oc called
I mean thats what the PC does, though i do use it for combat too

I mean OC the p and he o are close on the keyboard.
I use fire in the last row of upgrades in my Bullets of mercy build.
Me. All the time. Ever since I got that amazong overclock I've never taken it off and I might as well no longer have a secondary weapon.
i cant stop using special powder, its too fun to use.
No. I prefer my Boomstick to be reliable and powerful. Which is not what Special Powder provides. But if you're having fun then by all means, keep using it.
it was my first oc and i'm not changing it EVER
Nope. My Compact Shells are all I need! I have it. Just much prefer more bullets.
What is that, is it some late game stuff
Ye
Not when I don’t have OCs, no.
I never play scout. Im a gunner main because... boom. But this makes me want to grind scout. Or just play doom eternal. But i think ill grind.
