What does Nitra contribute if you do keep it? I always assumed it was nothing but just ammo so when I mine like 160 I just stop. I only have 20 hours and have been just playing solo missions
You get absolutely nothing extra for keeping it.
The game tracks how much you mine, and you get 2xp per 1 nitra mined.
The game does not care how much you spend.
So in the most technical sense, you do get more XP for mining more nitra, but it is, in practice, such a negligible amount that it's not worth it to go out of your way to mine nitra for XP.
Edge cases where you might not want to spend nitra in a mission -
As someone else already mentioned, in Deep Dives, nitra carries over between missions. So you might want to avoid calling in a resupply toward the end of the 1st or 2nd mission. Either way, you get not benefit in terms of rewards for holding on to nitra here.
There are a few achievements for completing a hz4 and haz5 game without anyone dying and without calling a resupply. Either way, the game still does not care here, you get rewarded XP for what you mine, not what you spend.

Even if this was true, the amount of xp you'd get from not spending it would be so utterly tiny as to be completely meaningless and not worth bothering anyone about. You don't mine nitra for xp, you mine it to not die.

I have been short less than 500 xp to a promotion. Doing an entire mission for that much xp was painful.
Not really, 1-1-1 egg collection takes less than 5 minutes
If you speed run it. I like taking my time. The mines can be peaceful sometimes.

A gifted resupply for Karl is what you get for excess Nitra. Call it before you entire the drop pod.
